"Your abilities are quite impressive."
Trace said as he walked over to me, crouching down as if to study me closer. I had to admit, gazing into his dark brown eyes almost made me lose all concentration. The man was gorgeous, they all were. I can imagine how women would throw themselves at the Benedict boys feet. Well, actually I can. I'm human after all. I was tempted right now. I like pretty things too. I felt my barriers slipping before I snapped myself back to focus, my walls rising strong and tall as I clear my throat. Focus Amy. Keep the hormones in check.
"Your father worked with us on the Savant Net. It holds a lot of classified information on Savants within it, all around the world."
Saul said to me as Trace continued to look at me, I didn't mind so much before but now it was just plain creepy. As ya know, I am, I acted on my crazy impulse and pressed my small hand on his face, gently shoving him back as he fell down onto his butt. I can't tell you why I did that, I was just feeling like a piece of bacteria under a microscope and I didn't like the time he was spending examining me. However, Xav, Sky and Zed found it extremely amusing to say the least. Their laughter and snickering filling the room, cutting through that tense atmosphere that seemed to be building with each passing second.
"Why did you do that?"
Trace asked, his tone a little sharper than before as he stood. Looming over me as Victor walked up behind him. I was starting to feel very uncomfortable, this family isn't one to mess with and the fact my father worked with them made this entire thing even weirder. I know my father and I drifted apart but we would check in now and then, although it had been a while after he didn't show for... No, not the time. Thankfully the other Benedict brother prevented me from bringing those dark thoughts to surface as he spoke.
"The man who killed Malcolm, how were you able to see it through his eyes? The vision was so clear, not even Uriel can do that."
Victor said, in his usual blunt and emotionless tone. What crawled up his butt? And who was Uriel? I'm guessing another brother. Jeez the gene pool runs deep here.
"It's just how it works, I absorb a piece of a persons energy and I can see images, memories of that person. Sometimes I can even sense where they are right at that present time. I know this may come to a shock to you but I never really got the detailed how to guide on my gifts. Must've got lost on the post."
I say in an equally sharp and candid tone. Isn't he a bundle of joy and happiness. Not.
"We could use someone like you on the force."
Trace said, his hand rubbing his chin as I scoffed.
"That's the most ridiculous thing to come out your mouth yet."
I say in slight amusement, me? An officer of the law? I mean technically I could I have dual citizenship between the UK and America but I'm more of a look from afar and judge than upfront and personal. The image of me in a Bobby uniform made me chuckle, that was before Victor chimes in.
"Couldn't agree more."
I pressed my hands against my knees as I clenched my jaw, my pale silver eyes narrowing as I look up at him. This guy is being such a douche, what did I do to cause him to hate me so much? I'm usually so charming, ha. Funny one Amy.
"What's your problem? Do you enjoy exuding this callous attitude or is this how you act toward everyone? I bet you're a real joy at work functions."
I snap, my tone sarcastic and to the point as Xav smirks again.
"She's not scared of you. I like her. She got you figured out in less than ten minutes, Vick."
"Grow up Xavier."
He retaliates, using his brothers full name for extra emphasis. This family was quite something and I would be lying if I didn't find this whole show entertaining. So I sat back and I just watched the two of them having an unspoken battle, their energy shifting before I roll my eyes. Quickly finding it boring. It's times like this where I'm glad I didn't have any siblings... Anymore anyway. Once again that memory tried to creep out the box, my control of my emotions seemingly slipping enough for Sky to notice as she tapped Zed on the chest, gesturing at me while they communicated silently.
"I uh, guess I'll leave this with you then? I really need to get these loose ends tied up before the snow hits."
Saul looked down at me in concern as I stand, my body slowly moving around the others as I moved toward the door.
"Amy?"
Their father speaks, the room coming to full attention as he looks at me.
"The danger isn't gone. I worry about you going back to the house alone, especially if that man intends to return."
I let out a sigh, my hands sliding into my pockets as I rock on my heels.
"I can put things in place to prevent him from getting in and I'm going to go back to see if I can locate that hard drive."
"Great. I'll come with you."
Victor said firmly, in a tone meaning I had no choice in the matter. Which is hilarious if he thinks that's going to work on me.
"Yeeeah, no."
I uttered as he raised an eyebrow at me before responding, his hand grabbing his jacket from the side of the couch as he walked toward me.
"I wasn't asking."
Oh this is how he's gonna play it.
"Good because either was I. Can I take Trace instead? He's less... Intense, grumpy even."
I peer around Victor as he broods like some miserable teenager. A smirk on Xav and Zeds face once again as Trace shook his head.
"No can do, I've got to head to work. Victor is an FBI agent, he's better suited for this."
I glared at him. FBI agent my ass, they give any old riff raff those jobs nowadays? I can't imagine this guy showing compassion when speaking to victims or witnesses. I bet cuddling a porcupine is more fun.
"Great. I'm stuck with this sprag."
I sigh in irritation and turn to leave, waving at Sky as I walk past the other members of the Benedict family who looked at me in amusement. I guess they were listening in. Was there no privacy in this town?
We got back to my dads place pretty quick, he was driving his fancy Prius with blacked out windows, parking behind me as I got out my jeep before walking up the path, not waiting for him as I saw Mrs Hoffman wave from the window. I smiled, even if I didn't want to and with one of the Benedict Boys in tow I'm sure her little mind is going absolutely bonkers. I can imagine it now. Scottish daughter of deceased neighbor gets Victor Benedict into her house within 24 hours.
"You have raccoons in your trash cans."
Victor spoke from behind me, my eyes rolling as I struggled with the door again, my frustration almost at breaking point.
"Now is that you sharp deduction skills as an FBI agent or did you see the over indulged trash gremlin walking past?"
I say sarcastically as he lets out a huff of air, his hand leaning forward to grab the handle to pull the door toward me, allowing the key to unlock with no problems. Now if it was anyone else, I would've said thank you but it was Victor so I did what any mature adult would do and ignore it. Walking inside as I shiver, the damn heating didn't come on. I swear I turned the thermostat before I left.
"This house... I swear to god. I'll burn it to the ground."
I mutter as I walk toward the basement door.
"I don't recommend it."
I hear him call out as he shuts the door, my eyes rolling again. He thinks he such a smart ass. As if I'm going to burn down the house. I open the basement door and trudge down the steps, switching on the light to see a hopeless looking furnace in the otherwise empty basement. Seemed odd considering everywhere else in this Adam's family style home was filled with crap.
"Bloody America and they're stupid shite, use a bloody boiler like the rest of the world."
I look at the furnace, my hand rubbing the back of my neck as I didn't have a fecking clue on how to fix it. I gave it a little kick with my foot before Victor spoke from behind me, nearly scarring me out my damn skin.
"Kicking it won't fix it."
"Jesus Christ! Can you not do that?!"
"You didn't hear me walking down the stairs?"
He said in his usual calm and direct tone. My expression dropping as I clenched my fist.
"I don't know, by my reaction, what would your gut tell you?"
"That you are very annoying."
He says in his velvety, low tone. My heart fluttering slightly as I looked at him, why does someone so attractive have to be this way? It's like when you find out your celebrity crush beats puppies or something. I wondered what he'd look like if he smiled? I cut the thought before I look at him deadpan.
"The feeling is mutual."
I turn back toward the furnace, my eyes narrowing as I look at the blue energy sparkling within it, it was faint but there.
"What the hell..."
Victor walks closer as I crouch down, my hand opening the little door thingy, I guess I didn't realize the furnace wasn't working yesterday as I was so tired but there was something inside that shouldn't be there. I lower my shields, my eyes seeing my father's energy within as I reach inside. My hands sifting through the ash as I feel something solid, my fingers wrapping around it before I pull it out. Dusting off the exterior to see a small metal box.
"What is it?"
And there he goes again, asking stupid questions. I can't imagine this guy closing any cases at the bureau. Maybe he's just there to look at?
"Well considering you just watched me pull it out the damn furnace and I don't have x-ray vision in my repertoire, I don't know."
Victor looked at me with emotion this time, it was a look of irritation and disapproval. I wasn't sure why we got under each other's skin so easily but if we were going to spend more time with each other, it would most likely turn into a problem.
"Just open the box."
I raised an eyebrow at his order before chuckling, he was over a head taller than me so he leaned down toward my shoulder as I slowly opened it to reveal a USB stick. Not quite the hard drive I was expecting but it's gotta be that guy was looking for? Can't imagine why else you'd hide it in the damn furnace. It's a good thing I had the sight to check.
"I have a laptop in the car, let's see if what we feared is on there."
Victor turned and walked away, managing to avoid every creaky part of the stairs as my eyes followed him up, my head tilting as I caught sight of his rather impressive looking behind. My lips pulling into a smile before I quickly shook it from my head and walked up after him.
