The pair had returned to the tamer's unit. They were sitting on the couch relaxing, when the tamer spoke up.
"So... tomorrow is Monday."
The digimon looked at him blankly before responding.
"Is that significant?"
"Well, yeah... it means I have to go to work."
"Oh, I see. What does your work involve?"
"I'm an engineer."
The digimon gave another blank stare, prompting the tamer to explain further.
"...basically, when someone wants to build something, I help make sure it doesn't fall down."
"Interesting. I think your work would be useful in the digital world. In the few peaceful villages, we struggle to construct buildings that do not collapse when struck in battles."
Ren's apparent expectations of his work prompted the tamer to give a hesitant look.
"Uh... I don't know if it's possible to build something that can withstand a digimon battle."
"Oh... but you just said you make sure they do not fall down."
"Well, yeah... within reason. I can't design things to be invincible. Like, you guys are pretty strong. It would be like hitting a building with a natural disaster."
"Hmm... do you use chrome digizoid to help make the buildings stronger?"
"Uh... chrome-what-now?"
"Chrome digizoid. It is a well-known material in the digital world. You have not heard of it?"
"Nope, not ringing any bells I'm afraid."
"Hmm. You should probably look into it. I am certain it could help improve your work."
"Uh, sure. I'll... keep it in mind. Anyway, the reason I brought this up was because I don't know what you're going to do for the whole day."
The digimon didn't miss a beat before replying.
"I will be accompanying you, of course."
"Yeah, I thought you might say that. Digimon are allowed in the office, as long as they're not too big. But I've gotta warn you, you're gonna be spending a lot of time sitting there bored out of your mind if you come to the office."
"I would not neglect my duty to protect you to avoid a degree of boredom."
"Oh, come on Ren, I'm not gonna get attacked while I'm in the office..."
Flashback to the 'episode' with Peter...
"I swear to god Miles, if you've taken my stapler again..."
The tamer stared blankly, lost in thought.
"Tamer?"
"Huh?Sorry, just thinking about... something. Anyway, don't you want some time to do your own stuff?"
Ren gave a slow shake of his head.
"...you don't have anything you want to do?"
"I... am not sure what I would do."
"Really? What did you do before we met?"
"I did not have a specific goal. I was simply observing people as they went about their tasks."
"People-watching? I guess you could still do that. Or maybe we could find you a hobby or something."
"A hobby?"
"Yeah, you know, something to do for fun. Do you have anything you're interested in?"
The digimon opened his mouth to speak, but came up with nothing.
"...not very good at the idea of leisure, huh?"
A disheartened expression crossed Ren's face and his ears drooped.
"It has not been a priority. I was generally focussed on survival."
"Damnit... nice job Miles. Way to go making your digimon all depressed... oh, he looks so pitiful."
"Sorry Ren. I forgot you had it so tough in the digital world."
"No need to apologise, it was not your fault."
"Yeah, I know, but… nevermind. Anyway, have a think about it. No point escaping the digital world if you're not gonna enjoy yourself, right?"
The digimon's expression turned pensive.
"I suppose... I shall think about it."
