Toshinori's Choice
Chapter ten: Hosu Hustle
The internships were started by seeing Aizawa see his students off to where they were going for their internships, aside from Shinso who Aizawa explained would be sticking with him. Due to both of them having non-combat quirks that can still be useful for incapacitating an enemy, it would be best for Shinso to learn from Aizawa himself. Aside from that, the Class 1-A students went off on their internships, although Izuku did catch out of the corner of his eye that Aizawa was leading Shinso to help him secretly tail Todoroki.
Izuku realized that Aizawa was wanting to keep an eye on things in case Endeavor got uppity; the Flame Hero would no doubt be unamused with Todoroki not picking him. And then there was what all that was uncovered in the efforts to investigate Endeavor, efforts that had to be put away as the higher ups in hero society are basically requiring that Endeavor be let off the hook. Such corruption was rather jarring to the green-haired boy, but for reasons that escaped him he had faith that, eventually, Endeavor will get what he had coming.
Deciding to have faith in the heroes who actually were heroes, Izuku eventually made his way to Gran Torino's place, the dilapidated looking building where he lived. On the way, Izuku was recognized as the boy who took gold in the UA Sports Festival's first years division. Izuku was honestly rather flattered by the praise, as he often did not get such a warm reception outside of his parents Inko and Toshinori, as well as a select few others. Even with the efforts All Might did to do away with bullying and discrimination, Izuku still had a bit of a rough deal growing up.
But a lot changed for the better for Izuku, thanks to his dad Toshinori. Step-dad technically, but Toshinori was Izuku's real dad as far as Izuku cared or was concerned. It was thanks to Toshinori that Izuku had been able to live life as well as he had. He had even gotten his quirk from Toshinori, an act of torch passing from father to son. That made Izuku all the more wanting to prove that he was worthy of bearing the power that his dad had bore for so long. And when he arrived at Gran Torino's place for more experience, Izuku intended to prove himself.
Prove himself worthy of not just One For All, but also being All Might's son.
...
Tenya followed along behind Tensei as they were at the site of a construction project going on. "So my classmate Uraraka's family is doing this construction as an act of charity," Tenya said.
"It's supposed to be some sort of food bank place," Tensei said, "And it's Uraraka Construction as a whole rather than just the Urarakas, but yeah." Turning to face his little brother, Tensei said, "And this act that they are doing is also a form of heroism."
Tenya looked confused. "...I can see how such an act of charity can be good, but how is it also heroism?"
"Because of the intent behind it, because of what it will do," Tensei explained, "Not all heroism is stopping crimes or punching villains in the face until they go down. Helping those in need is also a true act of heroism. It can be a grand as saving someone's life or rescuing them from disaster, or as humble as helping to put food on their table when they otherwise would have had little if any. In fact, one can make the argument that helping those in need is the greatest form of heroism."
Tenya had a mildly surprised look on his face, before said surprise morphed to consideration. "You want me to expand my view on what it means to be a hero."
Pointing commendingly at his little brother, Tensei said, "Yes, exactly. You seemed to me that you were running on the idea that all pro heroes do is stop crimes and punch villains in the face. But helping others in need is also a big part of being a pro hero." As the two brothers talked, they were approached by Ochaco's mom and dad. Despite how they were the second richest couple in Japan thanks to how their business was revitalized years ago, the Urarakas still dressed casually, even to the extent that it sort of came off as blue collar.
"Oh, you're Ochaco and Tsuyu's classmate," Mr. Uraraka said to Tenya, "I didn't know Ingenium would be bringing you by!"
"This is actually my little brother, Mr. Uraraka," Tensei explained, "And I brought him here as part of his internship so I can expand his views on what all constitutes as work that counts as heroism." Turning to look at Tenya, Tensei said, "Lil' bro, the Urarakas, despite them not being pro heroes, have done more good than most pro heroes I know. Despite making even more bank than our family and our family does make considerable bank, the Urarakas are still goodly, humble folks. We can learn a thing or two from them."
"I believe that my classmate Uraraka said her family had once been financially struggling," Tenya said, "But were able to overcome that and now are paying it forward."
"Yes, we know what it's like to be in a tight spot," Mrs. Uraraka said, "It's part of why we try to do as much as we can for others who still know what my family and I used to know."
"And I see you guys are rocking a casual vibe," Tensei remarked, "I was expecting something more along the lines of that the Yaoyorozus would wear."
"We do have fine clothes, yeah," Mr. Uraraka confirmed, "And we do wear them on occasions that call for it. But my wife and I, as well as our daughter Ochaco, still prefer to dress in a more casual manner. That Tsuyu girl we took in is much the same."
Gesturing to the Iida brothers, Mrs. Uraraka added, "Plus, my husband and I still like to work directly when it comes to the projects our company gets, go out into the field and help bring buildings to life as it were. We... can't exactly risk ruining fine clothing, so cheap casual clothing is a more ideal choice."
Holding up a hand, Tenya asked, "There's something I'm curious about, assuming you'd be willing to indulge my curiosity. I did get it you guys took Asui in after she was orphaned following her parents being among the victims of that one traffic accident between Endeavor and a villain, when the villain acted to cause those twenty plus vehicles to crash and kill forty plus people."
Mr. Urarama nodded grimly in understanding. "Yes, and what makes the case even worse is that the villain Endeavor had fought, some fellow that had been identified in the news as a villain called Mr. Compress, was able to escape Endeavor's pursuit."
Gesturing to the Urarakas, Tenya asked, "I got it you also have plans to take in Asui's younger siblings when they are found. That being said, are you giving efforts to help with the search?"
"It's the first thing I had thought of when Tsuyu said her little siblings are missing," Mrs. Uraraka said, "We're even offering a reward for information leading to the safe recovery and return of Satsuki and Samidare." Looking concerned and worried, Mrs. Uraraka went on, "Tsuyu had suffered, there's no denying that. But it's arguable that her little siblings are suffering worse. They're still so young, and yet they lost their parents. Young children growing up without parents to love them will be constantly suffering. We're hoping to find them, so we can save them from that suffering and help them to heal."
Tensei nodded in approval. "And that, in itself, is another form of being heroic." Turning to look at Tenya, Tensei said, "I can make an argument that the first and most important heroes that a kid will ever know are their mom and dad. Kids need a steady, loving hand to help them grow up to be the fine, upstanding people they can be. You and I both are examples of being fine and upstanding guys, and we have our parents to thank for that."
Tenya looked a bit surprised to hear that. "I... I never considered that, Tensei. Don't get me wrong, I know full well our mom and dad have always done right by us, I am grateful to them and I do love them. But I never considered them caring for us as we grew up as a form of heroism." Tenya felt that he was learning a lot, and said that he would do what he could to help those who need it whenever possible. He also said that he would keep an eye out for Tsuyu's younger siblings so that he could help to save them from there suffering.
Who knows what it can do to a child if they lose both their parents.
A few days into the internships, it was morning and Gran Torino was having morning coffee as he watched the news. Izuku joined him, they both sat at a table as they watched the news on the nearby TV. Given the relaxed and casual air going about right now, one could not be blamed for thinking that it was a scene depicting not student and teacher, but grandchild and grandparent. Gran Torino took a sip from his coffee. "Mmm mmm mmm," the older pro hero hummed in delighted amusement, "It's true what they say. Hazelnut creamer covers up all sins."
"So what are we going to do today, Gran Torino?" Izuku asked.
"We're going out on patrol," Gran Torino explained, "We'll be meeting up with a few other student-mentor pairs in the internships to coordinate on an investigation in the area of Hosu."
"The aerea of Hosu..." Izuku said, trailing off but suddenly coming to a realization. "Stain the Hero Killer is operating in Hosu!" Izuku said, looking a bit panicked.
"Relax, kid," Gran Torino said, "We ain't gonna try and hunt ourselves a Hero Killer. In actuality, we're gonna be part of a team doing a little bit of secret following around to try and get more info on a certain pro hero, one of the many who's been said will be going to Hosu to try and track down the Hero Killer."
Izuku looked curious about that, wondering who it was he and Gran Torino were going to help other heroes to essentially stalk. The business, according to Gran Torino, would be discussed when the meeting occurred. In the meantime, they still had some free time to be less serious, so they could idily chit-chat. "So Izuku," began the older pro hero, "You're a teen boy in high school, so I bet you're bound to have thought about girls by now. Any of the girls at your school caught your eye yet?"
Izuku's face lit up red out of embarrassment. "Oh, umm, I, err..." Izuku began, stammering out of embarrassment, before letting out a sigh. "...Yes, actually. I actually do have feelings for one of the girls in my homeroom class. I was planning to confess to her after the US Sports Festival, I figured winning first place and getting the gold medal would make me confident enough to go through with the confession, but my friends Tenya and Shinso got my attention and reminded me about how we had to help our classmate Todoroki."
Gran Torino's eyes narrowed a bit. "The Iida boy and the Shinso boy, huh? I noticed you're speaking of the Iida boy on a first name basis."
"I've become close enough friends with Tenya that he gave me consent to address him by his first name," Izuku said, "As I gave him the same courtesy. Shinso is likewise friendly with us but still prefers we address him by his last name on the basis that 'Shinso' takes less time to say than 'Hitoshi', even if it's just a one syllable difference. Shinso says saving time where and when possible can pay off in the long run." Looking at Gran Torino, Izsuku said, "Wait a minute, Gran Torino. How come you spoke as if you have some familiarity with my classmates and friends?"
"Toshi sent me files on each of the first year hero course students in UA this year," Gran Torino explained, "Even a file on the Mineta boy who was expelled. The teachers at UA have some suspicions that I'm not at liberty to share with you, but Toshi brought me in on the case as soon as it was brought to his attention. Toshi has a lot of respect for my opinion, he thinks my experience and wisdom from over the years of being a pro hero can help to figure out a solution to crack the case."
Leaning forward a bit, Gran Torino went on, "That being said, you mentioned that the girl you're crushing on is in your class. You're in Class 1-A under Eraserhead, so that means your crushing on either the Ashido girl, the Asui girl, the Hagakure girl, the Jiro girl, the Uraraka girl, or the Yaoyorozu girl. I still can't tell you why I was given the files, but maybe I can help you learn a bit about your crush, mmm?" Izuku blushed in embarrassment again, giving off an embarrassed moan as he scrunched up. All this did was make Gran Torino give an amused bark of laughter.
Later that night, Izuku and Gran Torino, both in costume, were in the area of Hosu. Izuku took note of how there were so many costumed heroes going about, at least a hell of a lot more than what he expected for Hosu. "The presence of the Hero Killer draws in pro heroes willing to take a big gamble to score a big win for their reps," Gran Torino explained, "They believe that taking down the Hero Killer will see them gain much renown."
"But..." Izuku began, "...But isn't taking down a villain to keep them from causing more harm more important than taking down a villain because of the renown it could gain for you?"
"Not everything in hero society is squeaky clean, unfortunately," Gran Torino replied, "You're about to learn that when we get to the meeting with-"
*THOOM*
Gran Torino was cut off when an explosion occurred nearby. Looking over, Gran Torino and Izuku saw a few monsters that Izuku was able to identify visually as Nomus, as he had seen one at the USJ attack. But these all were variant models from the looks of it, a total of five. Already many of the pro heroes who were in the area because they came to Hosu to track down the Hero Killer moved in to fight the Nomus, but even though the Nomus only numbered at five thus were outnumbered, all of the pro heroes were lesser ones of lower rank, so it was still tough.
Gran Torino scoffed in bitter annoyance. "Well fuck. Those look like the Nomu monster from the USJ incident. Toshi described it to me."
Izuku was about to speak uo, but he got cut off when he, to his surprise, heard Aizawa's gruff voice call out, "Gran Torino! Midoriya!" Izuku and Gran Torino turned to look and saw it as Aizawa, with Shinso following along, came running up. Additionally, there were also the Iida brothers, as well as Todoroki with his internship mentor Manual. "I wish we could of had our planned meeting under different circumstances," Aizawa said, "But as you can tell, more of those Nomu monsters had shown up here in Hosu."
"Aizawa-sensei?" Izuku asked, "What are you doing here?"
"We can discuss that later, Midoriya," Aizawa said, "For now, we need to help the other heroes deal with the Nomus, although I am hesitant to see you and the other students fight them."
"Yeah, I'd rather not send the boys to fight those monsters either if it can be helped," Manual said.
Turning to look at Tensei, Aizawa said, "Ingenium, can you lead the boys here in helping to evacuate civilians from the danger zone while Gran Torino, Manual, and I all help the heroes fight those Nomus?"
Tensei gave Aizawa a salute. "Got it, Eraserhead!" With the plan formed, Gran Torino sped off, with Aizawa and Manual following after him, as the three of them rushed off to help the other heroes fight the Nomus. Turning to look at the boys, Tensei said, "Yeah, chaos like that is above the level you guys are at right now. It's best to let the pros handle it, we can focus on getting innocent civilians out of harms way."
"That might be the more important job here out of the two," Tenya remarked.
His little brother's comment drew a sincerely amused smirk out of Tensei. "...You got a fair point there, Tenya. Alright, boys, follow my lead, we got civilians to clear out of here while the pros fight those monsters!"
Following Tensei's lead, Izuku, Tenya, Todoroki, and Shinso went about helping to locate civilians and directing them out of the zone where the pro heroes were busy fighting the Nomus. There was one young girl so scared to move that Shinso had to use his quirk to brainwash her into getting up and moving with him to get out of the danger zone. Regardless of the dangers to themselves, Izuku and his peers knew that what they were doing was a necessary part of saving the day here. Getting those who were in danger out of harms way was essential to the hero profession.
...
Unbeknownst to the heroes and hero students down below in the streets, Dabi stood on the roof of a building, watching things happening down below. Standing with him were Spinner and Kurogiri. "I thought that the boss man's doctor friend would only have three Nomus ready," Spinner commented, "And yet I count five down there who are keeping the bulk of pro hero attention occupied so Stain-dono could pick ones off along the sides."
"The master's doctor friend was able to get two more prepared in time for this attack," Kurogiri explained, "The extra forces ought to help further the chaos sowed this night, as well as potentially convince Stain that we can be of further help to him."
Dabi, the bottom of his long dark coat with sleeves reaching the elbows before ending in metl cuffs, looked down with contempt as he spotted something that got his attention. "Endeavor is one of the pro heroes down there. No doubt he believes he can boost his reputation if he's the hero who defeats Stain."
Spinner turned to look at Dabi. "Do we join in down there to assist with the fighting?"
The scarred villain gently shook his head in the negative. "No way. We can't afford to reveal ourselves to the heroes. Not just yet. There's still a few things that we need to take care of before we can make our first real move."
The lizardman villain nodded in understanding before turning his head back to look down into the chaos below. "...Huh?" Spinner said as he spotted something that had caught his attention, "There are some herolings down there. I recognize them from when we saw the UA Sports Festival on TV. There's even the green-haired boy who took first place, as well as Endeavor's boy who took third."
Dabi, his interest piqued by what Spinner mentioned, asked him to point out what he was seeing. As such, Dabi saw it as Izuku, Todoroki, Tenya, and Shinso were helping to escort civilians to safety. "All four of those boys were in the tournament for first years in the Sports Festival," Spinner said, "And yeah, the one down there is totally Endeavor's son." Turning to look at Dabi, Spinner asked, "You said you were interested in capturing Endeavor's boy down there, right? I know it's a tad early as you specified you wanted to take the Yaoyorozu heiress first, but the opportunity is here. Would taking Endeavor's boy here and now be doable?"
Waiving a hand dismissively, Dabi said, "We're gonna have to let him go for now. There's too much chaos down there, we'd be risking ourselves. No, it's best for us to just hang back and continue to observe." Arching a wry eyebrow, Dabi asked, "Do we at least know where Stain is at right now?"
"I saw him go off into an alleyway after the pro hero Native," Kurogiri said, "But I lost track of him afterwards."
Dabi turned back to resume looking down at the chaos happening below. "It would be a shame if the heroes got to Stain, he'd be invaluable to us to helping further our cause."
...
Down where the heroes were still trying to get a handle on the situation with the Nomus, Tensei was still leading the boys in helping to get civilians out of there. "That makes thirty out of harms way so far," Tensei said, "I think there's a few more back there, but after that you boys can head to safety while I go join the other pro heroes in fighting those monsters."
"Got it, Tensei!" Tenya said, as a soldier would address a superior officer.
Chuckling a bit, Tensei said, "I'm glad to see you're on the ball, Tenya. Same goes for-"
"Hey wait a minute," Shinso interrupted as he looked around, "I heard that the pro hero Native was among those helping out here. Where did he go off to?"
A voice of instinct rang in Tensei's head. "...We need to find Native, he could be in danger assuming he's still alive."
The four boys, with Tensei leading the charge, began to search around for the missing pro hero Native. It was Izuku who first spotted Native, sitting on the ground in an alleyway with his back against a wall. To Izuku's worry, a mysterious person armed with knives was standing nearby, and the way they moved towards Native suggested that their intentions were less than friendly. Luckily for the boys and Tensei, the armed mysterious figure hadn't noticed them yet.
"...Shit, that's Stain the Hero Killer," Tensei swore, "I recognize him from a profile I got as I'm helping to look into the case, but the only photo available is blurry. Still, it's obvious he matches what the written description says."
"So what do we do?" Todoroki said, "We're four students and one pro, and he's a dangerous villain."
Tenya, with a firm look on his face, said, "Well isn't it obvious? We need to save Native."
"Exactly, Tenya," Izuku agreed, "Although it might be tough against Stain, even with a numbers advantage assuming we can use our quirks."
Tenya, his expression suggesting his mind was racing a mile a minute, suddenly relaxed a bit as he said, "...I have a plan, but I'll need Tensei to cover for us to the authorities if need be." Tensei looked surprised, but he had a gut feeling his little brother was onto something.
...
In the alleyway, Stain loomed over the downed Native, serrated katana raised to swing down against the wounding pro hero and put him six feet under. "Another fake is sent to the void," Stain snarled as he looked down at Native with utter contempt. He raised his katana back a bit more, then looked like he was finally about to swing it down to claim Native's life.
But the Hero Killer was cut off when he was rammed on the side by two super fast persons decked out in knight-like armor. The two knights stood there as Shinso came up behind them, as if getting in position. As Stain recovered, Tenya and Tensei took their respective helmets off, both of them glaring down at Stain as the Hero Killer regained his bearings. "Your evil ends here and now, Hero Killer!" Tenya barked.
Stain scoffed bitterly with annoyance. "I figured that fakes would seek to capture me, but it disgusts me to see that young heroes in training are also being dragged down the wrong path. You clearly prioritize gaining glory in the media spotlight over actually doing what's right. If I were you, I'd prioritize rescuing the downed hero, if he can be called a hero."
"We are prioritizing rescuing Native, you villain," Tensei said, drawing a surprised look of disbelief out of Stain, "Why else do you think we're distracting you while some allies collect Native to get him out of here?"
Stain's eyes widened a bit more out of surprise when he heard the last bit, and out of the corner of his eye he saw Izuku and Todoroki carry away the injured Native. Stain's eyes turned back to look at the Iida brothers. "We can't very well save a life if there's someone threatening to take it breathing down our necks," Tenya said, "So we're putting ourselves on the line to make sure what's really important is taken care of! Helping those in need is the most vital part of what it means to be a hero, as I have learned during my internship so far, and I will do what I can to help who I can when I can, even it it leads to my own doom!" Tensei nodded in agreeing approval to his younger brother's bravery.
The Hero Killer looked on a bit before he relaxed his expression. He sheaved his katana, then to the surprise of the Iida brothers he began to applaud them by clapping his hands. Although it came from a villain, Tenya got the feeling that Stain's applause was actually sincere. "...I suppose that I have misjudged you," Stain said, "And for that I am sorry. You actually do have true heroic potential, given how you're willing to risk your necks to do what is actually right. You've shown a little bit of the attitude that All Might has as the crown jewel of Japanese hero society. He's a diamond while the other heroes are one yen coins, but you two at least are topazes."
"You have respect for All Might?" Shinso spoke up.
"Indeed I do, boy," Stain said as he replied to Shinso, "All Might is the onl-" Stain suddenly stopped short and stood there silently as if enthralled, as he had just fallen victim to Shinso's brainwashing quirk. By that time, Izuku and Todoroki had come back after getting Native to safety. While Stain was dazed, Tensei led Izuku, Tenya, and Todoroki in blitzing the Hero Killer, striking him with multiple hits and knocking him out of his brainwashing, as well as knocking him out. As Stain laid knocked out on the ground, Tensei put cuffs on him after rolling him over on the ground so his back was facing up.
As Tensei helped to apprehend Stain, the four boys stood by in surprise. "I... I can't believe it," Shinso said, "We just took down the Hero Killer. And none of us were even hurt."
"And it's all thanks to Tenya's plan," Izuku went on.'
The younger Iida brother nodded in understanding. "If anyone asks, it was Tensei's plan, and none of us hero students fought." Everyone nodded in agreement as Tensei hoisted the knocked out Hero Killer to his feet so he could be carried out of the alleyway.
Eventually, the chaos in Hosu was settled. Two of the Nomus were vanquished while the other three were captured. It was also noted that both of the vanquished Nomus were slain by Endeavor. The heroes on scene were praised for their work while ones who were badly hurt were taken to the hospital and those heroes were also praised. But a lot of the praise being doled out to the heroes went Endeavor's way; being the highest ranked pro hero present aside, he had also done the most damage to the horde of Nomus overall. Indeed, the Flame Hero was most certainly in the spotlight.
However, Endeavor had the spotlight stripped from him when it was placed on Ingenium, as he had found and defeated Stain the Hero Killer. Gran Torino, Aizawa, and Manual when they heard Tensei defeated Stain rushed to see him, mostly because they worried about the boys left with him. To their relief, all that Tensei said the boys did was collect the injured Native (who had already been rushed off to the hospital, also he agreed to keep word of the boys' true involvement to himself) while Tensei himself kept Stain's attention wholly occupied. The Hero Killer had no chance of ever harming the boys.
As some lesser sidekicks from Endeavor's agency stood guard behind where Stain was sat on the ground, a news press member with her cameraman interviewed Tensei about him having defeated and captured Stain. During the interview, however, the winged Nomu escaped its bindings, got up, grabbed Manual, and flew off. As people were panicking over this, Stain was somehow able to escape, run after the winged Nomu, and pull out a knife and aimed to throw it at the exposed brain of the flying Nomu. But Endeavor conjured a spear shaped mass of fire and threw it with the intent to strike Stain.
The Hero Killer was able to throw his knife into the flying Nomu's exposed brain, but Endeavor's flame spear struck Stain in the back with such force, it pierced him entirely and then flew on to impale Manual in the chest, due to how Manual fell after the flying Nomu let go of him. As a result, Stain, the flying Nomu, and Manual all hit the ground with sickening thudding splats. Medics on scene rushed over and, after checking for pulses, confirmed that both Stain and Manual had died as a result, and they were willing to bet the eerily still winged Nomu was also dead (they had no idea how to check for a pulse on it).
Izuku and his classmates were beyond shocked that Endeavor essentially had sacrificed Manual in order to take down Stain. Worse yet, when word of what all happened was released to the public the following morning, it was clear that the powers that be were spinning things to make Endeavor come off as flawlessly good. The Flame Hero was praised for his act of ending the Hero Killer's reign of terror, Manual was trash-talked a bit because he 'had recklessly gotten in Endeavor's way', and even the older Iida brother was scolded in the news press for not checking to ensure Stain was sufficiently cuffed.
...
Eventually, the internships came to an end, and Gran Torino was seeing Izuku off. "Yeah, we originally intended to meet with Ingenium, Manual, and Eraserhead to investigate Endeavor," Gran Torino said, "But with Manual now dead and pressure from the folks who run Japanese hero society to let Endeavor go on his merry way, we have no choice but to bide our time for now."
Izuku looked unsure of things. "There's... there's something that we can do about Endeavor. He's being allowed to get away with too much."
"We can only bide our time for now," Gran Torino said, "During said time, you ought to focus on things more important for a teen boy in high school to worry about, like your studies and training."
The green-haired boy nodded once in the affirmative. "Yes, sir."
Continuing to smirk in amusement, Gran Torino added, "Also, you ought to think about how to tell the girl you're crushing on that you're crushing on her. You still haven't told me who the lucky girl is, my boy." Seeing Izuku light up red out of embarrassment made Gran Torino give off a bark of amused laughter, lighting the mood enough to send Izuku back to UA with a hopeful smile.
END, CHAPTER TEN
Author's notes;
This chapter covers the chaos in Hosu, speeding things up because of characters not in Hosu normally being in Hosu here. A prime example is Tensei who, as opposed to being injured by Stain, he's instrumental in bring in Stain here. But he escapes and is killed by Endeavor, who also kills Manual by accident but the bad parts are covered up. Things are getting more suspicious here, so stay tuned for more.
