Welcome back to City of Angels and Demons. Last time, the investigator from Christina Summer's disappearance, Officer Moe Azaria, and the Internal Affairs investigator, Frank Lesus, arrived. And straight away, the investigator left a strange taste in everyone's mouths. While Hicks takes Officer Azaria and Investigator Lesus to identify the captured gunmen, it's revealed Officer Azaria left the evidence from the previous case for examination. So, what is hiding in the evidence? Read on to discover...
(The scene opens in a smaller room, full of files, relics, and other pieces of evidence from Christina Summer's disappearance a few years back. And in the room are Spyro, Cynder, Hondo, and Deacon, looking over everything in the room)
Deacon: I've got to admit, the investigation seems to have been pretty thorough.
Spyro: There's something off about all of this, I know it. We've just got to find it.
Cynder: (Examining a file) I think I've got something.
Hondo: What is it?
Cynder: An off-handed comment from one of the team members on the location of the disappearance.
Spyro: Well, what does it say?
Cynder: Here it is. And I quote: "This is the fifth disappearance around here in as many months. I'm starting to think this neighborhood is jinxed"
Hondo: What's the location?
Cynder: That's what's weird, they never say where it is specifically. Only listing it as "somewhere in Silver Lake". And none of the disappearances were ever solved.
Hondo: Do they ever mention these disappearances again?
Cynder: Strangely, no. That's probably why it's listed as off hand.
Hondo: Well, that at least gives an area to narrow in on.
Deacon: Wait a second. Silver Lake is supposed to be one of the safest districts in LA, and nobody's even mentioned 5 unsolved disappearances there in 5 months? These two are right, something's fishy about this. It's almost like somebody's covering them up.
Hondo: That would explain why at least one member of the team was involved in the attack this morning. Trying to get the victim who got away.
Cynder: Once Hicks gets done with Officer Azaria and Investigator Lesus, we'll have to get some more data on these other incidents and see if we can find a common factor.
(While these three have been talking, Spyro has continued to go through evidence, and has found something: an old audio file on a media player, He plugs a pair of headphones into it and listens for a moment, before realizing what it is.)
Spyro: Here's something. (Unplugs his headphones and places the media player on the table) This must be the message from Christina that closed the investigation.
Deacon: Doesn't sound that unusual.
Spyro: Take a listen. A close listen.
(With that, Spyro plays the message)
Christina Summer: (Via the recording, but very nervously) Hey everybody. Sorry for the lack of contact recently. I just... (Almost unintelligible noise) I met this guy online and we've decided to elope. I'll send a postcard. (The file ends)
Deacon: That was... weird.
Cynder: You're telling me. Christina didn't talk like that.
Hondo: Hold on, did anybody else catch that noise in the middle of the tape?
Spyro: That's what I was talking about. Let me queue it back up and let's see if we can't figure it out.
(Spyro queues up that moment with the strange noise to it, and sure enough, with everybody listening closely, it becomes clear what the figure is saying.)
Christina Summer: (Via the recording) ...for the lack of contact recently. I just...
?: (Via the recording) Read it.
Christina Summer: (Via the recording) I met this guy online and we've decided to elope. I'll send a postcard. (The file ends)
Deacon: Did you guys hear that too?
Cynder: I most certainly did. "Read it".
Hondo: Let's get that file to down to processing. Because if this is real, then it can only mean one thing.
Spyro: The call was scripted, undoubtedly by Christina's kidnapper.
Cynder: Who I'm willing to bet were responsible for all the disappearances around that time.
(At this point, Hondo seems deep in thought about something in that call, which Deacon notices)
Deacon: I know that look, Hondo. What's going on?
Hondo: The voice on that call, it sounded... familiar. I can't place who it was though.
Spyro: Chances are, you'll figure it out as we go. (Picks up the questionable evidence) Let's get this to Hicks and see if we can't figure this madness out.
(And with that, the quartet leaves the evidence room as our tale ends for today)
And that looks like a good place to wrap up for today. So, we've got a series of strange disappearances that nobody seems to remember, and reasonable doubt that the call that wrapped Christina Summer's case was genuine, from a voice that Hondo seems to recognize. So, what is going on here? Tune in next time to hopefully start finding out! Same time... same channel!
