Leery - Epilogue One
Chip was so glad to be home, to have the reports done, the investigation into the shooting completed. He felt like he could relax for the first time in weeks. That had been a long mission before Krueger's ghostly submarine showed up while they were charting the sea bottom. Oh well at least it was over.
He would check on Lee tomorrow. Make sure he had a good meal to try to get some more meat on his bones. He had been so pale, weak, and thin since the shooting he was beginning to seem a bit wraithlike. Chip pulled himself up short. Looked around quickly for the handiest wooden item and knocked on the wooden top of his coffee table. Lee was not wraithlike, he had more colour, was stronger, better, of course he was.
Of course Chip thought that was the worst mission ever. Once they crossed Krueger's path he just kept turning up like a bad penny. Turning up … they never did figure out how a WWI submarine sunk in the North Atlantic had turned up off their bow in the Central Pacific. It had also shown up again hundreds of miles away. Then they had sunk it! How had a sunken sub even been on the surface? Somehow for a dead guy Krueger had certainly had a lot of substance. They had actually buried a body at sea! Hadn't they? But he had shown up again with the sub … hadn't he?
The more Chip thought about Krueger the less safe he felt. How did they really know that a missile would stop someone that turned up after being lost at sea, after being buried at sea? He took a deep breath, held it a second then let it out in an audible sigh. How did they really know?
