Chapter Twenty-Six

It has been a few days since the reveal of what King was. It had actually taken King a while to really accept that he was a Titan. Danielle has been studying nonstop trying to figure out how to make a Portal Door. Collector couldn't help that much in that regard as his body was still confined to the In Between.

"Beans!" said Eda, kicking the fridge close. "We ran out of apple blood. Still no luck?"

"I am studying every book I can find but no luck," said Danielle, her hair slowly changing to silvery white.

"Some of the ingredients may be lost to time," said Collector, looking at Eda. "Or archived by my older siblings."

"Drat!" said Danielle, gently slamming her head on the kitchen table.

"I wish I could help ya, kid," said Eda, looking at Danielle. "My door was already pretty old when I found it."

"Remember how long you had it?" asked Danielle, looking at Eda.

"Well..." said Eda, only to hear Lilith scream and running towards the living room with Danielle and Collector.

"Help... me," said Lilith, as feathers were sprouting all over her body.

"Calm down, just calm down," said Eda, grabbing an elixir and feeding Lilith it. "The curse acts stronger when you're stressed. Much like Danielle and her situation."

"That was... horrible. How have you managed all these years?" asked Lilith, before smacking her lips. "And are the elixirs different from usual?"

"Those are my original ones," replied Danielle, helping Lilith to the couch. "More potent, one less ingredient, still disgusting."

"I'd say," said Eda, before looking at Lilith. "It's been hard, but since we split the curse, at least the elixirs are working again."

"That's a relief," said Lilith, before becoming terrified seeing her hand missing.

"Got it," said Danielle, grabbing Lilith's hand and gently placing it back on. "There."

"Oh, yeah, sorry. Side effect of the curse. It's actually fun once in a while," said Eda, looking at Lilith. "Now don't worry. I've stashed elixirs all over the house. And Danielle always have a few on hand. Whenever you start feeling feathery, just help yourself to one of these bad boys."

"I had no idea this is what I did to you," said Lilith, regretfully. "I am so, so sorry."

"Eh, at least I got company now," said Eda, handing an elixir over to Lilith. "And you got me if you need anything."

"Okay, Eda," said Danielle, walking outside with Eda and Collector. "You were saying before Lilith screamed and everything."

"Right, as I was saying, I've had the portal door for years," said Eda, looking at Danielle. "But I originally just found it in the dirt. Never figured out who made it or where it came from. I just kept it to myself."

"I understand not really wanting to show anyone something that valuable but…" said Danielle, looking at Eda.

"Well, I may have been using it to hide from someone," said Eda, looking at Danielle.

"Who were you playing hide and seek with?" asked Collector, looking at Eda.

"Probably me!" replied a Feminine Voice, in the distance before a strong wind blows and a tornado comes through.

"Whoa… Procne," said Danielle, seeing a hawk come out of the tornado alongside an elderly lady.

"Hello, little witchlet," said the Elderly Lady, spreading her arms wide as she walks over to Eda. "Come here."

"Gwendolyn," said Eda, stopping the Elderly Lady from approaching any further with her hand on the Elderly Lady's head.

"Oof. Are we still on that?" asked the Elderly Lady, looking at Eda. "I'm your mother. Call me "Mom"."

"Mom?!" said Danielle, Lilith, and Collector, looking at the Elderly Lady.

"It is so good to see you again," said Gwendolyn, squeezing Eda's face with her hands. "How are you feeling? Are you eating well? I heard all about the Petrification Ceremony. Trust me, I have a lot of strong words for that Belos."

"I'd stay away from that man," said Danielle, staring to the side. "He has no love for this world."

"What?" said Gwendolyn, confused.

"Mother!" said Lilith, jumping onto Eda then standing before Gwendolyn. "Mother, you know, I was there too."

"Oh, hello to you too, sweet flea," said Gwendolyn, touching Lilith's hair. "Still dyeing your hair, I see. Well, it's very sleek. Now give me a moment with Edalyn, dear. It's important."

"Lilith," said Danielle, seeing the sad expression on Lilith's face.

"That's right!" said Gwendolyn, posing. "Today, I am about to complete a 30-year mission."

"So that's how long you've had the curse," said Danielle, looking at Eda.

"Yup," said Eda, before gaining an annoyed expression. "Oh, no."

"Your mother has finally succeeded," said Gwendolyn, posing still.

"Here it comes," said Eda, pinching the bridge of her nose.

"What's coming?" asked Collector, looking at Eda.

"Today, I shall be curing," said Gwendolyn, twirling her staff and jabbing it in the ground. "Your curse!"

"What?!" said Danielle, staring at Gwendolyn, perplexed.

"No, thanks," said Eda, digging her finger into her ear.

"What?!" said Lilith, staring at Eda.

"I said, "No, thanks." I got my elixir system," said Eda, staring at Gwendolyn. "I'm good."

"But... But who knows what they put in those nasty concoctions?" said Gwendolyn, looking at Eda.

"These elixirs she's taking now are handmade by me," said Danielle, staring at Gwendolyn. "They're much better and organic than the original elixirs."

"See," said Eda, ruffling Danielle's hair. "Well, would you look at the time? I got a lot to do today. So sad to see you go. Okay, byeeee!"

"You just…" said Danielle, shocked seeing Eda send Gwendolyn off.

"Moms. Am I right?" said Eda, seeing shocked expressions on Danielle, Collector and Lilith's faces.

"I haven't seen Mother in forever!" said Lilith, frustrated. "And she was handing you a cure on a silver platter!"

"I'd loved to see my mom right now and you sent yours away," said Danielle, looking sad.

"I'd like to see my mom too," said Collector, looking towards the sky. "My dad, not so much."

"Oh, listen, she comes around every year, toting a new cure for my curse," said Eda, walking back in the house. "But they never work, so I am done getting my hopes up."

"Mother visits Edalyn... regularly?" said Lilith, in disbelief as she follows Eda into the house.

"This doesn't feel right," said Danielle, watching Eda and Lilith in the house. "Mrs. Clawthorne was more interested in Eda than Lilith. She should find the time for both of them."

"Well, why not talk to her?" asked Collector, pointing in a certain direction. "She just landed over there."

"You're right," replied Danielle, running over to Gwendolyn. "Mrs. Clawthorne, a word please."

"Please, Mrs. Clawthorne was my mother," said Gwendolyn, looking at Danielle. "Call me Gwen."

"Okay… Mrs. Gwen…" said Danielle, looking at Gwendolyn.

"Drop the Mrs., you're making me feel older than I should," said Gwendolyn, staring at Danielle.

"Just trying to be respectful. Okay Gwen…" said Danielle, looking at Gwendolyn. "I'm Danielle, a half human. And also, Eda's apprentice. While I think what you're doing is meaningful in its own right, why weren't you paying attention to Lilith? She's your eldest."

"Oh, don't you worry about such a thing," said Gwendolyn, looking at Danielle. "I know my sweet flea better than you think. Also, don't blame Edalyn. It was the curse that created the rift between us. Also, half human…"

"Seen in my hair and in my eyes. Let's get back on subject," said Danielle, looking at Gwendolyn. "I understand the rift you speak of, there's one between me and my dad in the Human Realm right now."

"Human Realm? Hmm," said Gwendolyn, looking at Danielle. "My dear, I may know how to fix both our rifts."

"If you know one than fix the one with Lilith as well," said Danielle, looking at Gwendolyn. "You may not see it but I did."

"I don't know what you're talking about. Me and Lilith are just fine," said Gwendolyn, looking at Danielle. "I've heard some information that may assist you on your quest. Help me cure Eda's curse and that information is yours."

"Cure Eda's curse… I don't know Gwen," said Danielle, staring to the side. "I mentioned this to Eda the night I found out but the curse may be too intwined with her being and removing it could cause her death."

"I never thought of that," said Gwen, looking at Danielle. "But I highly doubt it's one of those curses. Now, come along if you want that information."

"Yes, ma'am," said Danielle, walking after Gwendolyn.

"You know Danielle," said Collector, looking at Danielle. "I haven't really seen this so-called curse. If I were to see it act up completely, I can figure it out."

"Really?" asked Danielle, looking at Collector. "Your information would be a lot more useful."

"Ah! Here we are," said Gwendolyn, stopping in front of stone door before displaying her necklace which glowed and opened the door.

"The Luray Caverns were more impressive," said Danielle, entering the cave before spotting the crystals. "I… could use these crystals though."

"Uh, Danielle, you may want to see this," said Collector, looking at Danielle.

"Hmm…" said Danielle, watching what was unfolding before her. "You got to be kidding me."

"That's Master Wortlop. He's a traveling curse expert who's perfected next-level healing magic," said Gwendolyn, placing a hand on Danielle's shoulder before being gestured forward. "Ooh."

"This reminds me too much of two people," said Danielle, staring at Master Wortlop as she thought of Adagast and Tibbles. "Gwen has to know she's being played."

"This isn't the good kind of play, is it?" asked Collector, looking at Danielle. "Like keep away and fifty-two pickup."

"Exactly," replied Danielle, walking towards Gwendolyn. "Gwen, I really think you need to reconsider this. I don't trust this Wortlop."

"Come now dear. I've lived my whole life here, you've barely been here three months," said Gwendolyn, looking at Danielle. "I know what I'm doing. Come along."

"Why isn't she listening to you?" asked Collector, as Danielle walked after Gwendolyn.

"She's too blinded by curing Eda of her curse," replied Danielle, walking after Gwendolyn towards the Owl House. "Mrs. Gwen, you should really…"

"Let's get to work," said Gwendolyn, grabbing a bunch of wood planks. "You can start by writing what I tell you on these signs we'll make."

"This is going to be a long day for all of us," said Danielle, grabbing a paintbrush and writing what Gwendolyn said to her.

A lot of signs were made. Gwendolyn had Danielle place them in various areas. Afterwards Danielle ended up tying some ropes up. Danielle didn't like how Gwendolyn wasn't really listening to her but sucked it up knowing she had to be respectful of the elderly and such.

"Nice work, Danielle. With Wortlop's tome and your ability to lure Eda out of the house, we'll be curing that curse in no time," said Gwendolyn, looking at the signs. "I have to say, your penmanship is remarkable."

"Hey, mom taught me calligraphy at a young age," said Danielle, slightly blushing from the praise. "She taught me a lot of fancy things."

"So pretty," said Collector, looking at Danielle's penmanship.

"Our signs must've worked," said Gwendolyn, hearing a twig snap before hiding while grabbing hold of Danielle.

"Eda, I'm so sorry," thought Danielle, looking apologetic and concerned.

"Oh, baby, time to stock up on Mama's night juice," said Eda, appearing out of the brush.

"According to Wortlop's tome, we start by lowering the beast's defenses with special crystals," said Gwendolyn, looking at Danielle. "And they're supposed to be quite calming."

"So, they're musical?" said Danielle, only to see crystals thrown at Eda. "Those are not calming."

"Whoa!" said Eda, spinning her staff and blocking every crystal thrown her way. "Knife season came early this year."

"Not good," said Danielle, grabbing an elixir from her pocket.

"Oh, no, no, no," said Gwendolyn, stopping Danielle. "The texts say those feathers mean we're driving the beast out. Don't worry. After today, Eda will never have to drink those nasty little things again."

"Medicine is not really meant to taste good," said Danielle, staring at Gwendolyn.

"Next, we're gonna put that beast," said Gwendolyn, opening her bag which a puff of smoke came out of. "On ice."

A bunch of other methods were placed as well. Flying snakes which had Danielle clinging to Gwendolyn in fright. A few chainsaws popping out of the trees and grounds. Eda had managed to get past them but it had just put more stress on her.

"This... better be... the oldest, strongest, stinkiest apple blood ever," said Eda, climbing a hill and seeing a sign before begrudgingly continues walking. "Ah! I just stole these."

"It seems like the curse isn't my daughter's only problem," said Gwendolyn, watching her daughter.

"Okay, I had enough of this. I've been told by family members specifically Grampa to always respect my elders but this is going too far," said Danielle, only to see Gwendolyn send off a pouch with a crow phone. "What did you just do?"

"It turns out the ancient tome is only the first of a series," replied Gwendolyn, opening the tome. "So, I'm trading in a few paltry family heirlooms to get the rest."

"Paltry!? They may be paltry to you but they could have had meaning to Eda and Lilith or anyone else in your family. Just like my mom's necklace right here," said Danielle, gripping her mom's necklace.

"Hold on, that necklace…" thought Gwendolyn, looking at Danielle's necklace. "I recognize that necklace. It was on that Aria girl."

"Do you mind if I see that tome briefly?" asked Danielle, staring at Gwendolyn.

"Halt. Only people who have scaled Wortlop's" Pyramid of Study" can touch the tome," said Gwendolyn, only for Collector to wrap around her. "Hey!"

"Grab it," said Collector, blocking Gwendolyn's vision.

"Got it," said Danielle, looking through the tome. "Jar of bees for existential dread? Aromatherapy for broken legs? Bird songs for sufferers of stuffy noses?! Mrs. Gwen, you're being scammed here."

"You really think I'd spend my life savings on a fake?" said Gwendolyn, taking the tome back.

"People get scammed in my realm too, you know. I went along with you just to see who this person was only to see a scammer puppeteering you into giving him all your life savings," said Danielle, staring at Gwendolyn. "I'm going to give Eda some elixir."

"I'm afraid that will be a waste of your time," said Gwendolyn, as her palisman dropped a bag right next to her. "Hawksley cleared out every bottle hours ago."

"Why would you do that?" asked Collector, looking at Gwendolyn.

"Because I am a mother who will do anything for her daughter," replied Gwendolyn, looking at Danielle and Collector as she takes the elixir out of Danielle's hand.

"Mrs. Gwen!" said Danielle, trying to get the elixir back only to fall off the branch with Gwen before setting off a plant glyph and hanging by some vines. "That was close."

"Hey!" said Eda, spotting her mom and Danielle. "What is going on here?"

"Don't worry Eda. I got some elixir," said Danielle, taking out an elixir only for Gwen to shatter it with a blade of wind. "Mrs. Gwen!"

"You're not being very nice," said Collector, looking at Gwendolyn. "Moms are supposed to be nice."

"Witchlet, it's okay," said Gwendolyn, only for Danielle to shrug her hand off her. "Danielle and I are working to heal you."

"What? This was all you?" said Eda, getting angry. "You weren't healing me. You nearly killed me!"

"Eda, please calm down," said Danielle, walking forward. "I can explain."

"Why? Why should I be calm?" asked Eda, getting angrier. "I have a right to be upset!"

"Whoa," said Collector, seeing Eda transform into the Owl Beast. "Wait, this curse is…"

"Don't worry. According to this," said Gwendolyn, looking at the tome. "We just have to... uh…"

"Don't tell me it's in the next volume," said Danielle, seeing Gwendolyn show the tome to her. "Of course… they are not getting another snail out of us."

"King?!" said Collector, spotting King coming out of a bush frantic.

"So Lilith was feeling stressed and, uh, the light glyph didn't really work. So, uh... uh... uh..." said King, only for a large shadow to fly over and everyone to see a raven-like beast. "She turned into that thing!"

"Why is she raven-like?" asked Danielle, staring at Lilith's beast form.

"Sweet flea?" said Gwendolyn, shocked and in disbelief. "That... was my little sweet flea? That means she's also..."

"Cursed as well!" said Danielle, as King climbed onto Eda's staff alongside her. "Are you gonna come help your daughters or not?"

"Were you not paying any attention to her?" asked King, looking at Gwendolyn.

"This... This must be part of the process, right?" said Gwendolyn, hesitating.

"Looks like you still need time to process this," said Danielle, before looking forward. "Owlbert, let's go help Eda and Lilith."

Both Owl Beast and Raven Beast fly into Bonesborough. A fight ensures between the two. Danielle catches up as she sees the two still fighting. Emotions rising high, Danielle grips the owl staff tighter as her hair changes to silvery white, her eyes a glowing light purplish pink, and the markings flickering on her body. Staring ahead, Danielle jumps off the owl staff before a sparkly wind flies her closer to Eda and Lilith. Strings of light purple come forth from Danielle's hands and bind both Raven Beast and Owl Beast. Shrieking both spot Danielle before attacking her.

"Stop, please!" shouted Danielle, as trickles of blood come from her mouth. "Eda! Lilith! It's me. I don't want to hurt you."

"I don't think they want to listen," said Collector, before having to duck into the tablet. "Whoa!"

"Please, just stop!" shouted Danielle, a whirling mass of magic in her hand before striking Eda, gasping at what she done. "No, Eda!"

"Danielle, watch out!" shouted King, only to see Danielle slammed away by the Raven Beast.

"I don't… I don't know what to do," said Danielle, looking sad and concerned as she sees the Raven Beast and Owl Beast continue their fight. "How can I help Eda and Lilith without hurting them?"

"Don't worry!" said Gwendolyn, landing in front of Danielle. "Mama's here."

"Gwen?" said Danielle, staring at Gwendolyn.

"I'm sorry I didn't listen to you, you're very much like your mom in seeing things for what they are," said Gwendolyn, cupping Danielle's face and wiping her tears away.

"You knew my…" said Danielle, being helped up by Gwendolyn.

"Let's talk about that afterwards," said Gwendolyn, looking towards her daughters. "We have precious loved ones to save."

"You're right," said Danielle, listening to what Gwendolyn said as they get into position for the plan. "This has to work."

"Yeah," said King, squinting at Gwendolyn. "Are you like, secretly sending us to our deaths?"

"No, I'm making things right," said Gwendolyn, sternly.

"Whoa, look at her go," said Collector, peering out of the tablet. "Moms can be so cool."

"And embarrassing on occasions," said Danielle, slightly blushing. "Dads as well."

"My beautiful daughters, I failed you," said Gwendolyn, regretfully as she stands before the approaching Owl Beast. "Edalyn? You're in there, aren't you? I should've listened to you. I know now why you pushed me away."

"Uh, Mom?" said Eda, hearing her mom's voice from within her mind.

"I made you think your curse was something to be ashamed of," said Gwendolyn, gently stroking the Owl Beast's feathers. "Whether we want it or not, it's a part of you. And I love every part of you."

"Mom, I can hear you. And you..." said Eda, as light flashed between her hand and the Owl Beast as it shrinks before being pinned down. "My turn to drive."

"I'm so sorry," said Gwendolyn, regretfully as she places her forehead up against the Owl Beast's own forehead.

"Mom?" said Eda, at the forefront and staring at her mom.

"Witchlet!" said Gwendolyn, hugging Eda before the Raven Beast tries to attack only to be pinned down by Eda. "And Lilith... you were always so self-sufficient. But I didn't give you the attention you deserved."

"Finally, she admits it," thought Danielle, watching the scene before her.

"Now!" shouted Gwendolyn, as Danielle flies by and drops the elixir in both beasts mouth as King holds them open by stepping on their ears.

"Whoa!" said Danielle and Collector, staring at the light show as Eda and Lilith change back to normal and land on the roof of the building. "I did not think my elixirs were that strong."

"About time, Mom," said Eda, opening her eyes and smiling at Gwendolyn.

"Mom, I heard you but I couldn't stop myself. I... I couldn't do anything," said Lilith, sobbing.

"It's okay. Everything is okay now," said Gwendolyn, hugging her daughters. "I'm here for you both."

"She was... trying to do her best, huh?" said King, coming to a realization before looking at Danielle, seeing tears forming in her eyes. "Danielle, are you…"

"Are you okay Danielle?" asked Collector, looking at Danielle concerned.

"No, I'm not. Eda and Lilith finally reconcile with their mom and are reunited in their own way but…" said Danielle, slumping to the roof. "I'm nowhere near seeing my mom. How much longer till I see her again? Will I ever see her again? Or will I forever remain lost in finding her?"

"Danielle," said Collector and King, hugging Danielle as she softly cries.

Seeing Danielle in such a state, the Clawthorne woman get Danielle standing before flying back to the Owl House. Eda soothingly rubs Danielle's back as Gwendolyn and Lilith stare concerned for her. Landing back at the Owl House, Lilith heads inside as Eda and Gwen talk outside alongside Danielle, King and Collector.

"I'm sorry for all the trouble I caused, but I… I just wanted to help," said Gwendolyn, looking at Eda. "I should've trusted you more."

"Yeah, you should've, " said Eda, jokingly punching her mom. "But, hey, don't be a stranger. Okay, Mom?"

"Mom! I'm ready!" said Lilith, kicking the front door open and holding a bindle over her shoulder.

"Lilith," said Danielle, looking at Lilith. "What are you doing?"

"Well, we were talking and I've decided to go home with Mother and make up for lost time," replied Lilith, walking over and smiling at her mom.

"That's great," said Danielle, weakly smiling.

"What?!" shouted Hooty, bursting from the door.

"Edalyn, Lilith told me how she gave you the curse. I am so, so sorry to you both, to have this secret weighing you down," said Gwendolyn, grabbing her daughters hands. "I wish I knew sooner."

"There's still a lot to be learned about this curse, but..." said Lilith, looking at Eda. "It'll be nice to spend some time home and reconnect with Dad."

"We'll be away for a while, but we have plenty of elixirs stocked up!" said Gwendolyn, taking some elixirs out of her hair.

"Actually, after watching Eda change into the Owl Beast, I was able to figure out her curse," said Collector, looking at everyone. "It was a beast that was archived by a member of my race and turned into a curse. So, the beast is now actually sealed inside of you."

"Seriously?!" said Eda, looking at Collector. "Is there a way to remove it?"

"If it was still early on, yes," replied Collector, looking at Eda. "But since it's been years, it may not. I'm still learning myself. I'm not entirely sure how with Lilith since you split the curse with her."

"Better than nothing," said Eda, hands on her hips. "Now we know about the curse better."

"No! Lulu, you can't!" shouted Hooty, sobbing as he wraps around Lilith.

"Hootsifer, I have to. But don't worry, we can be penpals," said Lilith, touching Hooty's cheek before turning around to leave.

"But I can't hold a pen!" said Hooty, crying.

"I left some new books in the house for you," said Lilith, looking at Danielle. "Thought you could use some new reading material after reading every book already."

"Thanks Lilith," said Danielle, smiling at Lilith.

"Danielle, if it weren't for you I might still be wrapped up in Wortlop's lies. So here's what I should've told you from the start," said Gwendolyn, bending towards Danielle. "You're not the only human to have lived in Bonesborough."

"I kind figured that after hearing an old lore from home," said Danielle, looking at Gwendolyn. "Story of the Brothers Wittebane."

"Wittebane… that's the surname of my great Grandfather Caleb from the Deadwardian Era. What does this mean?" thought Gwendolyn, before looking at Danielle. "Well anyway, there's a rare substance called Titan's blood. It is extremely powerful and sometimes causes leaks between our realms. Plants, animals... And you guys have a lot of garbage, by the way. But humans are rare. My great-grandmother told me about a human who once lived here. But one day he just vanished. Rumor has it he left something in the library, and if you can find out more about him..."

"Then I can find out how he got here," said Danielle, before thinking.

"Exactly," said Gwendolyn, winking before pointing at Danielle's necklace. "Also, about six years ago I met a certain person wearing this exact same necklace."

"You met my mom!?" said Danielle, shocked. "Where is she? Do you know where…"

"Calm down dearie," said Gwendolyn, putting her hands on Danielle's shoulders. "She left not long after I saw her. The day I saw her, she was talking to someone through another plane before taking off this necklace and placing it around someone that wasn't there and it disappearing. And now that I see it around you, she was obviously talking to you."

"Mom," said Danielle, gripping her necklace. "I just…"

"Aria obviously loves you," said Gwendolyn, looking at Danielle. "And just like I reconnected with my daughters, you two will as well"

"Thanks Gwen," said Danielle, slightly smiling at Gwendolyn and waving goodbye as she and Lilith left.

"Well, I'll be on the couch for the next twenty-four hours," said Eda, walking into the house. "Goodnight."

"No, wait! I call couch," said King, running after Eda.

"Don't worry Dad, I'll bring mom back," said Danielle, staring at the sky. "Please, don't worry."

"Um, Danielle," said Collector, staring at Danielle. "Some of the markings stayed but they're really faded."

"What…" said Danielle, seeing the faded markings on her person. "Ah!"

Meanwhile, in the Human Realm, Jacob and the Snake-like Being were in the living room watching television. Skye was sleeping on the back of the couch near Jacob's head.

"Ah, I love history documentaries," said Jacob, stretching his arms and laying them on the back of the couch, scratching Skye and getting purrs in the process.

"Here Dad," said the Snake-like Being, grabbing a plate of nachos and handing them over.

"Thanks, sweet pea. Remember, if you don't learn from your past, you won't have a future," said Jacob, grabbing a nacho. "Also, don't tell you Grampa we're eating these. He'll have a fit if he finds out we're eating a Mexican snack."

"Got it," said the Snake-like being, eating a nacho as well. "Mmm, yum."
