Chapter 9: Mistaken Identity: Isobel and Jubal
Although they have yet to receive a case, Isobel's entire morning was spent with phone calls and paperwork that never seemed to end. A knock on her door got her attention. The smiling face of her ASAC was a welcome sight. "Want to join me for walk?" She immediately agreed.
The snow that started last night covered everything, making the city looking like a winter wonderland. They walked around, admiring the trees, lights and decor.
She bumped his shoulder. "Where are we going?"
"Just needed to get something from the DA's office but before that, lunch."
They went into a cafe, which they knew had good coffee and decent sandwiches. He ordered pastrami for him, tuna for her. After finishing their food, they took their coffee and continued their walk. They saw children playing in the snow.
Isobel playfully asked him, "Do you want to build a snowman?"
He chuckled. "And that's how you know if someone's got a pre-teen daughter because they'd understand that reference." He stared at the kids and commented, "Just add my coat and you'd mistake me with that snowman."
"That's not true," she objected with a laugh then she looped her arm with his. As they approached the building, she had to ask. "Why did you invite me for a walk?"
"Just wanted to get you away from your paperwork," he replied as he threw their coffee cups before entering the office.
Jubal told Isobel to just wait for him in the lobby. She nodded and looked around after he left. The building was grand with its marble floors and pillars. Although it exuded history, she still felt like she preferred the modern, sleek design of 26Fed.
While she was pondering, she saw a middle-aged man with blond hair, wearing an expensive black suit, approaching her. No doubt a lawyer.
"So Connie, are you ready?"
She tried to look if he was talking to someone else. Luckily, he didn't notice since he was busy tucking papers in his briefcase. Just when she was about to reply, she heard a familiar voice beside her. "Hey."
The other man looked up. "Oh hey Lu-," but he stopped when he misinterpreted Jubal's expression, "I mean, Cyrus. Nice haircut."
While it's true that he recently got a haircut, it had only been more like a trim. He didn't think anyone would notice but well, Isobel did and briefly mentioned it that morning. But certainly not by a stranger. "Uh, thanks." He then turned to Isobel with question in his eyes. She just gave him a tight smile and shrugged.
"Oh I get it. You lovebirds want to spend more time alone. Well, I've got to go ahead anyways. See you in court, Connie, and nice seeing you, Cyrus." With that the lawyer left, leaving the two confused agents.
"Who's Connie?" said Jubal.
"Who's Cyrus?" retorted Isobel.
"Guess we'll never know," Jubal said with a grin. "You ready to go?" She nodded as he offered his arm and linked it with hers.
