Chapter 10: Broken Phone: Maggie and OA
A/N: Refers to Chapter 21 of Whump turned Fluff
They were to update the JOC after the suspects were secured so Maggie pulled out her phone.
"Why is there a crack in your phone?" OA asked as he noticed the thin line in the corner of the cellphone screen.
She shrugged. "I must've landed on it when I tackled that suspect."
"You should have it replaced."
She snorted. "It's just a small crack, it's fine."
OA was working on his case file when he heard her. "No, no, no.." Maggie pleaded while clutching her phone.
"What's the problem?"
"My phone died. I must've forgotten to charge it."
OA mumbled "I already told you..." but stopped when he saw her giving him the death glare.
The next morning, she went to find a gift wrapped in kraft paper and a red ribbon. She was tempted to bring it down to the bomb squad.
"Oh, what do you have there?" Tiff just arrived, putting down her backpack and jacket.
"A suspicious gift. Should I bring it down?"
"You mean it got through security without anyone detecting anything? Just open it," she said then added, "Carefully, of course."
A new cellphone.
Tiff whistled. "Oh you must have been a very nice this year for someone to give you that."
When they got a new case, Maggie got partnered with Tiff and OA with Stuart so she wasn't able to talk to OA. Not to mention, he seemed to be avoiding her. It would have to wait until after the case.
Tiff and Stuart must have sensed that they needed to talk so they waved their goodbyes and left early. Maggie got the box and slid it on top of her partner's desk. "I can't accept it."
OA stared at the box then at her. "Then why are you giving it to me?"
She glared. "You're only one who knew about my phone. And if it wasn't you, I would have to bring it to crime lab since I didn't know who send it."
"Okay, it's from me," he held up his hands in surrender. "But you need it," he said, pushing back the box to his partner.
She hesitated and looked like she's going to push it back again. Instead, she sighed. "I'll pay you."
"What? Maggie!"
"It's an expensive gift, OA."
"Maggie, you should let others help you. You should let me help you." She looked like she still needed some convincing so he continued, "And besides, I already gave Amira a similar phone."
"Amira broke her phone too?"
He refused to meet her gaze. "No, she just wanted the new model."
"And you just gave it to her?" she asked disbelievingly. She knew OA's not the kind of brother that would spoil his little sister with material things. Instilling discipline is something important to him.
"Yeah, it's alright to give nice things for your loved ones sometimes. Which is why you should just accept this," he said as he handed the box to her.
"Fine. Thank you, OA." She moved closer to give him a hug. While they hugged, OA kept thinking about something. He couldn't tell Maggie that Amira sent him their picture on the couch in exchange for the phone.
