T.W baby loss and miscarriage
Walking into the hospital she sighed seeing Mike stood in the atrium holding 2 cups of what she assumed to be coffee
"How did you get here before me. I left the carpark first". She smiled taking the cup he held out for her.
"Well, I do know a shortcut" he grinned
"Thanks for the coffee "she said taking a sip.
Heading up to the paediatric ward Kate Smile at the ward sister who was sat on the nurse's station. Walking down the long corridor she could hear a commotion coming from the room we're Freya was.
Walking in she could see Maxine stood over the cot and Freya was screaming
"What the hell are you doing!" Kate said lifting the baby from the cot trying to comfort her.
"Max?" Mike said walking up behind Kate
"Well?" Kate said
"I was just collecting a DNA sample like I said I know this baby is yours" Maxine said coldly
"How many times do I have to say she is not my baby. It's physically impossible for her to be biologically mine" Kate said
"Oh really" Maxien said
"Yes!" Kate sighed exasperated
"And why is that then"
"because" Kate sighed "because of this" she said juggling Fraya in one arm and pulling her top up and the waistband of her trousers down slightly revealing a faded scar across her abdomen
"That could be from anything" Maxine said coldly
"5 years ago, I suffered a silent miscarriage unfortunately I didn't realise that's what it was, and I got an infection and almost went into septic shock. I had to have a hysterectomy so see it is imposable for that little girl to be mine" Kate said forcing back the tears and pain that this was bringing up
"What on earth is going on in here" the young English nurse Kate had met a few days before walked in "May I Kindly remind you this is a children's ward"
"Just get her out of her" Kate said indicating to Maxine
The nurse turned to Maxine "and who are you, you didn't sign in at the desk. I am going to have to ask you to leave"
"hm" Maxine flounced out of the room "i have got all I needed anyway"
Watching Maxine walk out Mike turned looking at Kate who was trying to hide her emotions after everything he walked out catching up with Maxine in the corridor
"Max!" he called "What the hell was that"
"Like I said I have strong reasons to believe that the baby is Lieutenant McGregor's. I was collecting a DNA sample to prove it. And that work of fiction she just spouted in there"
"You are talking crap Maxine. What she said is true" Mike said
"And how would you know"
"Because she is my ex-wife!" Mike said
"And brass let you work together"
"The split was amicable. We are still friends" Mike said "i don't know what has happened to you Max I don't recognise you anymore. When did you become so cold"
"i am just trying to do my job and help the AFP find out the truth about that baby"
"so, you shove a cotton swab in her mouth scaring her. Nice plan." Mike said "why didn't you actually listen before jumping to your own opinion"
"Mike..." Max called
"Just get out of here before I say something we both regret and think yourself lucky charges are not being pressed" Mike said walking back to the ward.
Stopping just outside of the room he looked in watching Kate sitting in the chair with the baby.
"My mother told me, Someday I will buy, Galleys with good oars, Sail to distant shores..."
Hearing his phone buzz from his pocket he smiled reading the incoming text. Quickly typing a reply, he smiled
"You are not supposed to use that in here" the English nurse smiled mock scalding him
"Sorry just some navy business" he said stuffing his phone back in his pocket
"hmm" the nurse said raising her eyebrow "just don't let matron see you with it out" she said walking into the ward kitchen
Deciding he had listened enough he walked in
"you, okay?" he asked knowing the last few minutes can't have been easy for her.
"I'm okay" she forced a smile placing the now calm Freya back in the cot
"i have got to nip out for a bit. Are you going to be okay. Max shouldn't come back but you never know."
"I'll be okay. The social worker should be here soon, and the nurse said this one is due a feed." Kate forced a smile
"if you're sure" Mike said softly "I'll see you later" he said softly kissing the top of her head.
Walking out Mike turned watching as Kate took a bottle from the nurse and began feeding Freya softly telling her a story as she did so he smiled this was the happiest he had seen her In years. Walking out of the hospital he pulled his phone out to see another text
'just here now'
He smiled even though he knew she wasn't a fan of surprises he hoped this one would be a nice surprises for her
