"So," Little Miss Curious meowed after a while of walking," other than mice, what else do we hunt?" She looked around the forest curiously like she thought prey would come right up to her and beg to be caught; her eyes were wide with awe as she took in her new territory.
"Maybe birds?" Mr. Bounce suggested, and he glanced at Mr. Nosy, who nodded.
"Also voles and squirrels; stuff like that," the black tom added. He pricked his ears and his mouth watered; he could hear and scent small, furry creatures. Embarrassment washed over him when his stomach growled. The others glanced at him, and Mr. Nosy forced a purr. "I guess I'm hungrier than I thought."
Little Miss Curious purred, too, and Mr. Bounce flicked his tail with amusement.
But Little Miss Daredevil looked more annoyed and maybe a little worried, too. "Do you even know how to hunt?" she demanded, eyeing Mr. Nosy with uncertainty. "Because clearly she doesn't." She gestured to Little Miss Curious, who ducked her head with shame.
"I'm sure it was just bad luck, like Mr. Nosy said," Mr. Bounce spoke up, walking a bit closer to the dark brown she-cat. "If he thinks she and the rest of us will get the hang of it, then I trust him." He glanced at Mr. Nosy.
Mr. Nosy gave him a grateful look. "When you're stalking mice, you put your paws down very lightly. Little Miss Curious' mistake was stepping on that twig, but the more she and everyone else practices, the easier it will get." He came to a halt, and his friends stopped and turned to him.
They watched as he dropped into the best hunter crouch he could manage. But he didn't dare to take a step forward at first, afraid that he'd mess up somehow. He pictured the move in his mind; he tucked his paws under him and curled his tail over his side so as to not disturb any leaves.
Very slowly, hardly breathing, he crept forward, putting his paws as lightly as he could onto the forest floor, determined to get this right. He remembered when Firestar first joined the Clan, and when Lionheart and Tigerclaw were training him. He pushed all his weight into his hindquarters, making sure they weren't high in the air. He realized that during summer, he might be able to blend in well with the shadows of the forest, but during the whiteness of winter, his black pelt was going to stand out against the snow. But if Clan cats can cope, then so will I.
Just then he saw a flick of movement and he turned his attention to a mouse digging under the roots of a tree. Praying to StarClan, asking that they will show mercy on him and let him make this catch, he crept toward it. He stopped every few steps to make sure no leaves or twigs were in his path. When he was almost upon it, he pounced, pinning the mouse to the ground.
Ducking his head, he gave it a killing bite, jumping back in surprise when blood rushed into his mouth. Spitting, he sat up, one paw on his prey. He looked up and saw his friends gathering around him.
"Great catch!" Little Miss Curious said, looking at him proudly.
Mr. Bounce and even Little Miss Daredevil congratulated him. The silver she-cat in particular was looking impressed that he had made the catch. He muttered his thanks to StarClan, and then, noticing that Little Miss Curious was staring at the mouse, he asked," Do you want to try it?"
The dark brown she-cat jumped, then looked embarrassed. "D-Do you think it's safe?" she stammered.
"Of course." Mr. Nosy pushed the mouse toward her. "The Clan cats eat prey like this, so I don't see why we can't since we're cats now. We have to eat something," he went on, shrugging. "We may not be a real Clan, but if we are to survive in this world until we can get home, we must learn how to live off forest prey."
Little Miss Curious still looked a little uncertain. Stepping forward, Little Miss Daredevil announced," I'll try some." She crouched in front of the mouse and sniffed it before taking a bite. She seemed startled by the blood, but after a moment of chewing, she swallowed.
"How is it?" Mr. Bounce asked anxiously.
Instead of answering, the silver she-cat took another bite, this time prepared for the flowing juices of the prey. Her eyes lit up. "It's delicious!" she declared, taking another bite or two. Then she swiped her tongue around her lips and sat back. "Anyone else want some?" she asked.
Little Miss Curious took a hesitant step toward the prey, crouching down and taking a small bite. She chewed it slowly, before swallowing. A purr started in her throat. "It's good!" She finished the mouse in a couple of hungry bites, licking the last of the juices off her whiskers. Neither of the she-cats seemed concerned that they just ate an animal. They were looking brightener as if the food gave them more energy.
It's good to know we can eat this prey, Mr. Nosy thought, satisfied. He flicked his tail. "Come on; let's carry on. Our friends back at camp will need food, too," he added, walking farther into the woods.
For a while they walked, forgetting about the hunt and just exploring. Mr. Nosy kept sniffing at plants and berries, wondering if this plant will be helpful or these berries will make one of his friends better if they got sick. He didn't memorized all the herbs like he knew Mr. Small did. If anyone would be a good fit for their medicine cat, it would be his little buddy. He made a note every time an herb or medicine was mentioned in the books, and he even studied a bit online about what medicine cats knew or learned. That's how they discovered there's more book series of Warriors.
We may not be a Clan, he told himself. But we need a medicine cat. Even in Dillydale, we had a doctor.
Soon the trees started thinning out and a fence separated them from a Twolegplace. Mr. Nosy stared at the houses, suddenly reflecting on how strange it was to be seeing this from a cat's point of view. But his feline instincts were kicking in, telling him to run far away from here before someone saw him.
The others obviously felt differently. "Houses!" Little Miss Daredevil exclaimed. "Maybe somebody can help us…" Her voice grew lower and lower until she stopped talking altogether.
That idea sent shivers down Mr. Nosy's spine, but before he could respond, Mr. Bounce pointed out," We're cats, remember? We can't talk to people."
Little Miss Daredevil was about to say something when the ground started shaking. Mr. Nosy looked around wildly. Alarm shot through him when he realized people were heading right toward them. They had to get into cover before they were spotted! He ducked into a bush, expecting his friends to follow him. But when the black tom turned back, he pricked his ears in surprise
Little Miss Daredevil, Little Miss Curious, and Mr. Bounce still stood there. Did they want to get caught? Didn't they understand the urgency of the situation? Mr. Nosy didn't fully understand it himself; he just felt a strong urge to hide.
What are they doing? he thought, pulling up clumps of grass with his claws, fighting back panic.
"Miss. Daredevil! Miss. Curious! Mr. Bounce!" the black cat hissed.
The three cats turned around and then walked calmly over to them, not caring that the people were in sight now.
There were three adults, and they were deep in conversation. Mr. Nosy pricked his ears, but he couldn't understand what they were saying. A yowling noise stole the black cat's attention and he looked down the dirt path.
A young kid was running to catch up to the adults. He felt as if he'd plunged into ice cold water when he saw a dog chasing its owners.
Suddenly the dog halted and sniffed the air; then it turned to the bush where the cats were hiding. It took off toward them.
"Oh no!" Little Miss Curious gasped, crouching down low.
"What do we do?" Little Miss Daredevil exclaimed. "That dog will tear us to pieces!"
Mr. Nosy felt the other cats getting ready to make a run for it. He realized that he had to give out orders before they got separated.
"Quick!" he yowled. "Climb a tree!" He bashed out of the bush and threw himself at the nearest tree. It was difficult to climb at first, but he dug in his claws and flinged himself onto the lowest branch. Little Miss Curious joined him, pressing so close that their pelts brushed.
Mr. Nosy glanced down at his friend and saw the dark brown she-cat trembling with fear. The black tom wrapped his tail around her body. "It's gonna be okay," he whispered to her, hoping what he said was true.
The barking got louder as the dog hurled itself at the tree the cats were in. Little Miss Curious let out a startled shriek as she lost her balance and fell out of the tree. Her claws hooked into the branch, her legs dangling only inches from the dog's snapping jaws.
Instantly, Mr. Nosy rushed forward and sunk his teeth in the she-cat's scruff, dragging her back onto the branch. The dog jumped into the air, just barely missing Little Miss Curious' tail. Mr. Nosy steadied his friend beside him.
"Thanks!" she gasped, panting as she crouched on the branch.
Mr. Nosy put his tail around his friend and said nothing. Despite the situation, he felt fondness run through him and he found himself longing to make a life with Little Miss Curious in this new world.
Deep emotion shone in her eyes, but before either of them could speak, a shout from one of the humans made the two cats look up. Mr. Nosy saw it calling to the dog, who immediately dropped onto all fours and ran to its owner, its tail wagging excitedly.
Then the human and dog walked off, side by side. The two cats in the tree watched until all of them, including the dog and the kid, were out of sight. Then Little Miss Curious turned her bright brownish orange eyes on Mr. Nosy as if she was about to say something, but again they were interrupted before either of them could get a word out.
Below, a voice called up," Hey! Are you two going to stay up there all day?"
Mr. Nosy looked down and saw the rest of their friends, Little Miss Daredevil and Mr. Bounce, standing by the roots of the tree. Slowly, he climbed down and padded over to them. Little Miss Curious soon joined them.
"That was a close one!" Mr. Bounce exclaimed, his yellow eyes so wide that Mr. Nosy could see the white rims around them.
"Yeah," Little Miss Daredevil agreed. "I almost didn't make it up a tree!"
Little Miss Curious crouched beside Mr. Nosy, trembling all over, and when Mr. Nosy laid his tail on her shoulder, she jumped.
"It's okay," he assured the dark brown she-cat. "The dog's gone."
Little Miss Curious stared at him and nodded, but Mr. Nosy noticed that she was still shaking.
"Come on," the black tom meowed. "Let's continue the hunt before it gets dark." Already the sun was moving down the sky, and Mr. Nosy couldn't believe it's almost been a whole day since they've been here. It's been a busy day, he thought. And still nobody has eaten. We need to bring food back to our friends.
The cats set out again; Mr. Nosy brought up the rear. He glanced back over his shoulder to where the humans had passed, and was surprised to see a dark cream tom sitting beside the fence.
His eyes met the cat's orange gaze, and he realized there were white circles around his eyes. Mr. Nosy wondered who this cat was. It was odd but something about him seemed… familiar. Then the tom turned and walked along the boundary of the Twolegplace. Soon he was out of sight.
Mr. Nosy put his head to one side, wondering why he seemed to know that cat. Then he noticed that he was being left behind. Shrugging off his confusion, he ran to catch up to his friends.
