Chase felt his head falling before quickly jerking his head back up and looked around in a daze, he saw the sky outside with a slight tint of orange as the sun neared the horizon. Chase noticed how the trees were now mostly spiky pine and fir trees instead of the leaf trees he was staring at just a moment ago. He looked back toward Ryder but found him to be asleep.
"Already?" Chase thought to himself as he turned his head towards Marshall and Everest across the table, where he found them to be fast asleep as well.
"You too?" Chase thought to himself.
"Oh, I must have fallen asleep." Chase figured out as the only possible explanation, Chase rested his head against the window with a sigh. As the trees were passing by outside a sign caught his eye as the train blew past it.
"Welcome to Nolby." Chase read in his head as the sign passed by. Chase's tail began to wag as he thought back on fond memories with Ryder, Marshall, Rocky, and him from when they used to live with Ryder's parents. His thoughts were quickly interrupted by screeching as he felt the train decelerating. Chase's eyes were drawn to Marshall who jolted awake from the sudden sound, He lifted his head from the seat and looked around but something else drew Chase's attention. Marshall's and Everest's tails were intertwined as if they were holding on to each other.
"Oh, Marshall... you aren't doing the best job hiding it are you." Chase thought to himself as he looked at the clueless Dalmatian. Marshall nudged Everest waking her up as Ryder yawned and stretched out his arms.
"Alright pups, let's go." Ryder yawned as he stood up and rubbed his eyes, the pups followed Ryder as they walked to the nearest door. As they were walking the train came to a full stop causing Marshall to stumble and fall over.
"I'm good." Marshall said in his usual happy tone as Everest giggled at the clumsy pup.
"Here." Everest said as she held her paw out offering to help him get up.
"T-thanks." Marshall said slightly embarrassed as he accepted the help and continued to walk toward the door. As they make it out on the platform Chase looks up at the thin clouds painted across the sky tinted gold by the last rays of daylight as they begin walking towards the nearby parking lot.
"This place isn't very big huh." Everest asked looking around as they were walking.
"No not really. Over there is the town main street where there are some stores, and turn down any of those streets connected and there are a couple houses." Marshall said while gesturing.
A loud whistle rang out causing Everest to jump while the rest knew exactly what it was and looked over to the source of the sound and saw a man standing with a raised hand by a large black 4-seat pickup truck. Everest took one look at the man then at Ryder and knew instantly who it must be.
"Boys! Over here!" The man yelled out as they started walking toward the man.
"Hey big guy." He said as he hugged Ryder for a second before kneeling down to Chase and Marshall who were standing next to Ryder.
"Hey my little guys." He said as he scratched them both under their chins, he looked up and saw Everest behind them.
"Oh we have guests, what's your name little lady." He asked as Everest walked in between Ryder and Marshall.
"Hi, I'm Everest." She said with an excited smile on her face as she extended her paw for a shake.
"Well hello there Everest. I'm Ryder's dad, Nick Torres." He said as he reached out and firmly shook her paw
"Nice to meet you Mr. Torres." Everest said putting her paw back on the ground.
"Please, call me Nick."
"Anyways let's get a move on, your mother is cooking dinner." He said as he opened the back door of his pickup.
"What's she making?" Marshall asked as he jumped in the truck.
"Chicken Casserole." Nick said as he sat down in the driver's seat.
"Sweet, my favorite!" Marshall cheered excitedly as Ryder walked around the truck and hopped in the passenger seat next to his dad. Chase got in last and pulled the door closed behind him.
"Everyone set?" Nick asked as he looked back at the pups.
"Yep!" Marshall responded.
"Alright let's go." Nick said as he pulled out of the parking space and left the parking lot. As they were slowly driving down the main street Chase looked out the window at the buildings next to the road as he noticed that as usual, everything looked the exact same. First, they passed a bar with the same busted neon sign on the roof. Then past a garage with the same advertisement board outside. Then finally a small white church with a green roof still flying the same sun-bleached flag, before they turn down the small dirt road just past the water tower. They slowly drove down the bumpy unkept dirt road for a couple of minutes before the truck pulled off the road and parked on the ruined grass next to a self-standing garage.
"I'll be just a minute you guys go ahead." Nick said as he shut off the engine.
"Okay Dad." Ryder said as everyone got out of the car. Marshall was desperately trying to step over the deep tire tracks in the dirt and with a final clumsy step, he made it onto the untarnished grass followed by the rest. They all walked towards the white two-story house that was further up the big property. Once there they walked across the big rocks dug into the ground to create a nice path to the porch. Ryder opened the screen door and walked through the already open front door, Everest was last in closing the screen door behind her.
"My boys!" A woman said as she appeared from the kitchen opening her arms for a hug.
"Mom!" Ryder and Marshall yelled as they ran towards her with Chase following at a walking pace. She embraced Ryder and Marshall tightly for a second before releasing them and looking at Chase with a big warm smile.
"Hello Chase." She said in a warm motherly tone as she bent down and scratched Chase just in the right spot, as always.
"Hi Kim." Chase said with a big smile on his face. Kim looked up from Chase noticing Everest standing by the doorway.
"You should have told me we were having guests." She said looking back at Ryder with smile. Everest walked up to Kim as she turned around, she extended her paw for a shake.
"Hi Mrs. Torres. I'm Everest nice t-" She was interrupted by Kim hugging her tightly.
"Nonsense call me Kim. Wow, your fur is so fluffy." She said before releasing the Husky.
"Thank you." Everest said with a big happy smile on her face. Kim looked behind Everest seemingly looking for someone.
"No Rocky this time?" She asked slightly disappointedly looking back at Ryder.
"You know how he is Mom." Ryder said as they both knew Rocky wasn't the biggest fan of big emotions.
"Yeah I know, it's just fun having everyone around. Remember how nice last Christmas was when the truck wouldn't start, Rocky was so excited to help fix it even though he wouldn't show it." Kim said as the memory brought a smile back to her face.
"Anyways, who wants Chicken Casserole!" Kim said as she began walking toward the kitchen.
"Oh me me me." Marshall said excitedly as he ran after her into the kitchen followed by the rest. As they came into the kitchen they walked over to a table on one side were two chairs and on the other side was a padded bench up against the wall and at the head of the table was another chair. The pups sat down on the bench as Ryder sat at the head of the table with his mother to his left and the pups to his right. Nick came into the kitchen and sat down next to his wife as the food was passed around the table, Marshall immediately dug into his favorite food.
After some time everyone had finished their food and were now just talking, although Everest didn't say much as she was mostly looking at Marshall's glossy mesmerizing fur reflecting the lights of the room. Nevertheless, they were all having a nice time at the table.
"Alright, it's getting late you should go make yourselves at home in Ryder's room." Nick suggested as he stood up and brought his plate over to the sink followed by the rest except for Kim who was drinking some tea and staring out the window. As Everest was about to leave the kitchen following the rest she noticed that she accidentally left her pup tag on the table. She walked over and grabbed her tag but as she was about to leave.
"Everest, have a seat." Kim said keeping her gaze out the window.
"Okay." Everest said happily as she sat down on the padded bench across from Kim.
"You like Marshall, don't you?"
"Yeah, he's a great friend." Everest said blissfully unaware.
"I don't mean as just a friend."
"Shit, was I that obvious." Everest thought to herself.
"Y-yes." Everest said as there was no point in denying it.
"He is a very nice pup, take good care of him." Kim said as she looked away from the window and at the husky with a small warm smile.
"I will." Everest said as she stood up with a friendly smile and walked after the rest who had now gone up the stairs to Ryder's old room. As Everest walked up the stairs she heard their voices coming from the first door on the left, she walked into the relatively small room and saw Ryder sitting on a bed in the far left corner. At the foot of the bed was a desk and to the right of the bed was a small TV, and to the right of Everest was a closet.
"There you are, I was wondering where you went." Marshall said upon seeing the husky enter the room.
"Oh yeah, I was just talking to Kim a little." Everest said looking at Marshall with a smile. Everest heard footsteps coming from the hallway and stepped aside as Nick walked into the room carrying three pup beds. Marshall's old red one, Chase's old blue one, and Rocky's old green one.
"Here you go guys, Everest you'll have to use Rocky's old bed." Nick said as he placed the pillow-like beds on the floor next to Ryder's bed and walked out of the room.
"Thanks dad." Ryder said as Nick left the room. Ryder laid down looking up at the ceiling, he thought back on on the conversation he had with Marshall.
"But mentally... he needs someone. He needs someone" He could hear Marshall say in his mind over and over again. He didn't know what Chase was going through but he knew he needed to help him.
"Hey uh... Chase, you wanna go for a walk?" Ryder asked as he sat up and looked at the Shepherd.
"Yeah sure." Chase said with a smile as Ryder stood up and walked down the stairs with Chase following, leaving Marshall and Everest alone in the room. Marshall jumped up on Ryder's bed and fiddled with the TV remote turning on the TV. Everest jumped up next to him and sat down right next to him and kissed him on the cheek before resting her head on his shoulder as she looked at the TV thinking to herself. Marshall was watching the TV but unable to pay attention to it as a small smile was on his face, he was busy feeling every single point of contact between his and her fur feeling the warmth emanating through his body.
"Hey Marshy?" Everest said closing her eyes as she was resting her head on his shoulder.
"Marshy?" Marshall asked confused.
"You don't like it?"
"No no, I like it... What is it my little snowflake?" He asked as a new warm smile formed on his face.
"I was thinking... we should tell Ryder and Chase about us." She said lifting her head and looking into his azure eyes, it was looking up at the sky on a beautiful clear day.
"W-wh... yeah I think you're right." Marshall said initially nervous but calmed down as he thought about it.
"How do you wanna do it?" He asked.
"Let's just tell them when they get back." She said as she rested her head back on his shoulder.
"Okay." Marshall said as he looked back at the TV with a small smile.
Chase and Ryder had walked a while on the dirt road without saying much of anything, just looking around at the forest around them.
"This is nice, I like this place." Chase said as he was looking around at the beautiful nature around him as they continued walking, but as they were about to reach the main road Ryder stopped.
"What's up Ryder?" Chase asked looking back at Ryder in confusion before Ryder raised his hand and pointed.
"Remember this place?" Ryder said as he pointed toward a small path leading in to the forest.
"Woah, I haven't been there since we moved." Chase said remembering where the path leads. They both started walking along the short path before reaching the bottom of the water tower.
"Here hold on to me." Ryder said as he placed the pup with a hurt leg on his shoulders as he began climbing up the ladder on the side of the water tower, Chase looked around as more and more was visible as they made their way higher finally stopping at the top as Ryder put him down on the cold metal of the water tower. He walked around the water tower up on the platform revealing a stunning view of the main street with the fields in the background, he could see down the whole street from the church to the neon sign lighting up the bar in the dark. They both sat down leaning against the metal just looking out over the small town and beautiful nature. They sat there in silence taking in the view.
"Hey Chase... you know I'm here for you... if you need to talk about... anything." Ryder said in a soft voice breaking the silence. Chase didn't respond... a tear fell from his eye, as he was once again reminded. His walls were already broken, there was nothing left to keep the broken pup safe.
"Come here buddy." Ryder said pulling Chase in for an embrace as he saw the tear on his face.
"You can talk to me Chase."
Chase felt how more tears began running down his face as he broke... Crying loudly into Ryder's shoulder as he was being embraced tightly. No words were spoken as Ryder held his crying friend stroking him on his back as he felt Chase's unsteady breathing between muffled screams of emotional repression letting out all he had been holding back.
"I'm sorry Ryder..." Chase said still burying his face in his friend's shoulder as Ryder let him speak.
"I lied to you... I wasn't left on the streets by my previous owner... I never had an owner... My parents were taken by animal control... I lived alone for weeks... a-and I'm sorry for not telling you."
"Hey don't be sorry, you don't owe me anything."
"Yes I do, you rescued me. The least I could do was tell you the truth, b-but I couldn't."
"And you didn't need to, having you as a friend is more than worth it." Ryder said as he hugged his friend as he cried his eyes out, letting go of everything that had been plaguing the broken pup, losing him sleep during the night... losing him friends during the day.
Chase slowly stopped crying as he felt the weight slowly being lifted off his soul. Ryder and Chase broke the embrace and Chase sat down next to him with Ryder wrapping his arm around him. Although it didn't look like it, Chase felt better knowing that he was no longer hiding anything from his friend. A genuine smile appeared on his face as he snuggled up against Ryder and closed his eyes as a cool breeze blew across the rapidly darkening sky. They sat there in silence as the last people left the bar and the street fell silent. Ryder and Chase could feel all sadness dissipate as if it were swept away by the wind.
"I think Marshall and Everest are together." Ryder said.
"Oh yeah 100%." Chase said with his eyes still closed as he chuckled, Chase stood up with a deep inhale.
"Let's go home." Chase said with a smile on his face.
"Yeah, it's getting late anyways." Ryder said as he stood up and picked up Chase once again placing him on his shoulders as Chase hugged his head for stability as he climbed down the ladder.
"Can I stay up here?" Chase asked as Ryder planted his feet back on the ground.
"Of course you can buddy." Ryder said and gave a small smile as Ryder began walking home with the Shepherd pup on his shoulders, just enjoying each other's company.
"Alright, Marshall they're back." Everest said hearing the voices downstairs, she jumped back on the bed and sat down next to Marshall who was no longer looking so calm and peaceful as before. Everest noticed the worry on Marshall's face, she gave him a quick kiss on the side of his head.
"It'll be fine Marshall." Everest's kiss had calmed him down as he realized that he wasn't sure what he was actually worrying about, he knew everything was gonna turn out fine. Ryder and Chase were happily chatting as they came into the room, Ryder let Chase down from his shoulders as they continued.
"U-um Ryder, Chase? Me and Everest had something we wanted to say." Marshall said unable to completely avoid worry. He got both of their attention as they stopped talking and looked up at the two pups on the bed.
"M-me and Everest are, uh t-together." Marshall said as he grabbed Everest's paw. Chase and Ryder looked at each other with smirks on their faces, Marshall was confused as this was not the reaction he had expected.
"What?" Marshall almost yelled before feeling a paw on his shoulder.
"They already knew Marshy." Everest explained as she realized that there never was a chance they would have hidden it from two of the smartest individuals she knew.
"Yeah Marshall you weren't the best at it, but at least you tried." Chase said as he hopped up on the bed and patted Marshall on the shoulder before walking past them and turning on the TV.
"Good for you guys." Ryder said with a smile as he petted both of them on their heads and walked past them to sit down and watch TV with Chase, leaving Marshall staring towards where they used to stand with a dumbfounded look on his face.
"Marshy?" Everest giggled as she looked at him.
"U-uh what?" Marshall said as he broke out of his stare.
"I love you." Everest said as she looked in to his blue eyes glistening with happiness.
"I love you too." Marshall said as he returned the look into her ice-blue yet warm eyes. A knock was heard at the door to Ryder's room before Kim's head popped in.
"Me and Nick are turning in for the night, sleep well." She said.
"Goodnight Mom." Ryder said with a smile as she closed the door and her foot steps could be heard moving down the hallway and then a door closing.
"Well I guess it's best we get some sleep too then." Marshall suggested and hopped on to his pup bed curling up to a ball as Chase followed suit.
"Ew, mine has... oil stains?" Everest said as she stood up from the green pup bed.
"You wanna switch?" Marshall asked as he raised his head and looked towards the husky.
"Really? Thanks Marshy." Everest said as she walked over and kissed Marshall on the cheek as he stood up to switch.
"Of course, anything for you." He said with a smile as he laid down in the stained green pup bed.
"Goodnight pups." Ryder said.
"Goodnight Ryder." The pups responded. Marshall and Everest entwined their tails, Chase closed his eyes with a small smile of genuine happiness for the first time in a long time not thinking of his past, Ryder looked over and saw the smile on his friend's face before he closed his eyes with relief that his friend was alright.
Silence
"Hey guys... is anyone actually tired?" Everest said as she lifted her head and looked at the rest.
"No, not at all." Marshall responded.
"Nope." Ryder responded
"We all slept on the train here." Chase pointed out.
"Oh right." Ryder said as he sat up in his bed.
"Well what now?" Marshall asked as he also sat up.
"I guess we can... I don't even know." Chase was stumped.
Silence
"Well you guys gotta have some good stories from here, right?" Everest asked.
"oh! oh! oh! We can tell you how the PAW Patrol came to be." Marshall said excitedly.
"Good idea Marshall, what do you say Chase?" Ryder asked.
"Yeah sure." Chase said with a smile as he turned around in his bed to face the rest, Ryder grabbed his pillow and blanket and laid down on the floor next to Chase as Marshall moved the green pup bed right next to Everest so they could sit together.
"Well it all started when we adopted Marshall..." Ryder began as Everest was paying close attention to the story.
Flashback
A younger Chase was sitting alone in Ryder's room anxiously staring out the window to the backyard. Ryder and his parents thought Chase would be lonely without any other pups to play with, although Chase thought that Ryder, Nick, and Kim gave him more love than he ever deserved he had always wanted a sibling. Ryder wanted him to come along to the relatively big town close by to go with to the dog shelter, Chase didn't like the idea of choosing a sibling as his moral compass was telling him that that would only cause issues down the line.
Chase heard how a truck pulled up further down the property by the garage, he felt enthusiastic but cautious. He heard how the truck doors slammed as he felt worried yet excited. He heard how the door opened and closed downstairs as he felt happy yet anxious. He heard the footsteps in the staircase as he felt scared but curious. He saw the door handle move he didn't know what he felt anymore. The door slowly opened revealing a white colored black spotted dalmatian.
"H-hi I'm Marshall." The Dalmatian said shyly as he entered the room with Ryder right behind him. Chase jumped of the bed and walked towards the shy pup.
"I'm Chase." He said in a soft confident voice as he reached out his paw for a shake, causing Marshall to pull back behind Ryder at the sudden motion before coming back out and shaking his paw.
"Alright guys what do you wanna do?" Ryder asked looking down at the young pups.
"The new episode of First On The Scene is starting soon, we could watch that." Chase suggested as he loved to watch the parts where the show followed police on their day to day jobs.
"You wanna do that Marshall?" Ryder asked the Dalmatian.
"O-okay." He said and shyly followed Ryder over to the bed and sat down next to him, Chase was sitting on the other side of Ryder. He turned on the TV and after a few minutes the show came on. The first part of the episode followed 2 cops trying to figure out a case, Chase was heavily invested as he tried to solve it alongside the show. Then after that the show moves on to a squad of firefighters responding to a building fire, Marshall couldn't take his eyes of the screen as he marveled at the brave people running head first into danger to save those in need.
"Wow that's so cool." Marshall said quietly.
"You like the firefighters?" Ryder asked as he looked at the amazed pup with a smile.
"U-uh Yeah." Marshall said shyly as he didn't realize he said anything out loud.
"Alright guys I'll be right back." Ryder said as the TV started showing ads, he stood up and walked out the door. Marshall laid down hiding his head.
"Hey, you don't have to be shy." Chase said as he moved closer to the Dalmatian as he lifted his head and looked at Chase.
"You're here now, were gonna be family for a while you know." Chase said with a smile. Suddenly Marshall embraced the Shepherd.
"Thanks... brother." Marshall said with a big smile as they hugged. As Marshall was about to end the embrace he accidentally stepped outside the bed.
"WHOAA!" Ryder heard from inside the room, he quickly opened the door to see what had happened. His worry quickly faded as he saw both pups on the floor laughing, a warm smile formed on his face seeing the two pups already laughing.
Flashback ends
"You guys sounded so cute." Everest interrupted the story.
"You can't even imagine." Ryder said as he stood up and opened a drawer, he pulled out a picture and handed it to Everest.
"OMG!" She said as she looked at the picture showing Chase and Marshall with big smiles sitting next to each other on the porch outside the house. Both pups were slightly embarrassed that Ryder had brought out that picture.
"The story Ryder." Chase said wanting to not talk more about the picture.
"Alright Chase. Then a few days later..." Ryder started telling the story again.
Flashback
Chase and Marshall were walking down the main street of the city.
"... there is the garage and there is the only restaurant and bar in town." Chase said as he was showing Marshall around the little town. They walked in to the bar as Marshall was looking around at all the things decorating the walls.
"Hello Chase." A man could be heard from a window into the kitchen, Chase walked over to the kitchen while Marshall was looking at the things on the walls.
"Hey Casey." Chase said with a smile.
"You making bacon?" Chase asked as he could smell the delicious meat.
"Yeah, that nose never fails you does it?" He asked and threw a piece of bacon to the Shepherd who caught it mid-air.
"Nope." Chase said happily.
"Who's your friend?" Casey asked as he saw the Dalmatian looking at some posters.
"Oh, yeah that's Marshall." Chase said and walked over to Marshall who was now staring at some kind of metal plaque on the wall.
"In memory of Ranger 'The good boy' Rae. 1985 - 1997." Marshall read aloud from the plaque and underneath was a picture of a Mixed Australian Cattle Dog.
"Who's that, Chase?" Marshall asked, Chase had never seen that plaque before and had no idea who it was.
"He was a hero that's who he was." Casey could be heard from the kitchen
"Saved a family from a house fire back in '97." He continued.
"Wow that's so cool, wish I was brave like that." Marshall said looking over the plaque again.
"You don't have to be brave to help people Marshall." Chase said, Marshall looked back at him with a happy smile.
"Hey Casey! You know anyone that could use some help?" Chase asked.
"Uh yeah, Ms. Stovall was complaining about her gutters overflowing yesterday."
"Thanks Casey." Chase said and looked back at Marshall.
"You wanna go help her?" Chase asked.
"Yeah." Marshall said excitedly.
"Let's go then." Chase said as they left the bar and began walking towards Ms. Stovall's house. After a short walk they reached the small single story house, Chase and Marshall walked up to the door and knocked on it. After a few moments the door opened revealing an old woman standing in the doorway.
"Ooh hello Chase." She spoke.
"Hello Ms. Stovall."
"And who's this handsome pup." She said noticing Marshall.
"Hi I'm Marshall." He said smiling at the compliment.
"We heard that you had some problems with your gutters, we wanted to ask if we could help." Chase said with a friendly smile on his face.
"Yes, they are not working and I don't understand why."
"Don't worry we'll take a look at them." Chase said.
"Thank you boys." She said as they walked off her porch and she closed the door. They stepped back from the house and looked up at the gutters running along the porch roof.
"How are we gonna get up there?" Marshall asked looking up at the high-up gutters. Chase looked around for anything that could help the,.
"Marshall, look there in the grass." Chase said and pointed out a tall patch of grass in front of the porch.
"Sweet, a ladder." Marshall said as they both walked over to it.
"Uh Chase, it looks very heavy." Marshall said as he was uncertain if they could lift it.
"If we lift together we can do it." Chase said as he was sure they could do it.
"Alright."
"Okay on three, one, two , three." Chase counted before they both pushed as hard as they could to stand the ladder up and lean it against the roof, and after a few seconds they did it.
"Phew, good job Marshall." Chase said catching his breath.
"Alright you wanna hold the ladder and I'll climb up." Chase said.
"No I wanna go up there, just like the firefighters on TV." Marshall insisted.
"Are you sure Marshall? You aren't the most coordinated pup."
"Yeah I'm sure, I'll be fine." Marshall said as he put his paw on the ladder.
"Okay Marshall you got this." Marshall told himself as Chase held the ladder in place. As Marshall started climbing the ladder Chase was a little worried that he would fall but after a few steps Chase noticed how Marshall was walking with such focus, it was like he was a completely different pup as soon as he touched the ladder. He swiftly made his way to the top and climbed on to the roof.
"Chase, there are leaves in the gutter." Marshall stated.
"Okay, just throw them out." Chase said before he saw a bunch of leaves swiftly being removed and thrown out of the gutter. Marshall quickly worked his way down the entire gutter along the roof.
"I'm coming down, hold the ladder." Marshall stated as he started climbing back down the ladder.
"Nice job Marshall." Chase said as he reached the ground safely, both pups happily walked over to the door and knocked once again.
"We fixed your gutters ma'am, there were just some leaves blocking it." Marshall proudly said as Ms. Stovall opened the door.
"Ooh thank you boys." She said as she petted the moth on the head.
"No problem ma'am, have a good day." Marshall as they both walked away.
Flashback ends
"Whoa, so that was like the PAW Patrols first mission" Everest said.
"Yes kinda, but I would say it actually formed a few weeks of helping people later, but first there is one more important thing..." Ryder continued the story.
Flashback
Chase, Marshall, and Kim were in the kitchen eating lunch as light rain fell outside as the clouds in the gray sky slowly moved with the wind, Marshall was sat looking out the window longingly as they ate their food.
"What's up Marshall?" Chase asked seeing his friend just staring out the window.
"I just miss Ryder." Marshall responded as he looked away from the window and took another bit of food.
"You gotta lighten up buddy, he's only been gone for two days. Besides he'll be back soon." Chase said and patted Marshall on his shoulder.
"You also have the surprise to look forward to." Kim chimed in.
"Come on you can't just keep saying that, tell us already?" Chase pleaded as Kim had been tormenting him all day by not telling him.
"Then it wouldn't be a surprise." She said.
"I hate surprises." Chase said grumpily.
"I know you do buddy." Kim said with a smile reaching over and scratching Chase's head causing him to be unable to hide his smile.
"Chase! The new episode of First On The Scene is on right now!" Marshall suddenly said noticing the time.
"Well what are you waiting for? Let's go!" Chase said as he quickly ran toward the stairs with Marshall following. Kim just smiled as the two quickly scurried up the stairs, she thought back on how Ryder and Nick had excitedly called her yesterday begging her to say yes. She simply couldn't say no to them, Kim stood up and walked over to a cardboard box that was placed under a chair on the other side of the kitchen. She opened it up and looked inside to make sure she hadn't forgotten anything that Ryder and Nick had asked her to buy, although some of the items were a little weird she still got them. As she closed the box and looked up she saw the black pickup pull in by the garage.
Chase and Marshall had just started watching the new episode of First On The Scene when the door handle to the room turned and Ryder walked halfway in to the room.
"Hey pups." Ryder said standing halfway behind the door, Chase and Marshall quickly jumped of the bed.
"Ryder!" They both said as they were walking towards the door before Chase suddenly stopped causing Marshall to stop as well.
"What's wrong Chase?" Marshall asked confused by his actions, Chase didn't respond as he sniffed the air. Chase's eyes lit up as he looked up at Ryder as his tail began wagging.
"I can never keep anything fun from you can I Chase." Ryder chuckled.
"Wait what's going on." Marshall asked as he was confused as Chase hadn't said anything but Ryder still responded to him.
Ryder didn't say anything he just opened the door more and stepped inside, just behind him appeared another figure. A grey pup with rough fur, a dark patch around one of his eyes, a crazy looking patch of fur on his head, and a floppy ear. Marshall froze up seeing the new pup walk through the door. Chase walked up to the grey pup and extended his paw for a shake.
"Hello I'm Chase, nice to meet you." Chase said with a confident smile.
"Hello, nice to meet you." The gray pup responded in an equally confident tone.
"Is he okay?" The pup asked looking at the frozen Marshall. Chase looked over his shoulder at Marshall before lightly bonking Marshall on the side of his head with his tail causing him to snap out of it.
"Hi I'm Marshall." He said excitedly.
"Hello Marshall, nice to meet you." The pup responded.
"So... What's your name?" Marshall asked as the pup didn't introduce himself.
"I don't have a name. However feel free to refer to me with any descriptive names until further." They gray pup said in a tone as if he said something normal.
"What do you mean you don't have a name." Marshall aske in a confused tone.
"Long story short, I don't remember being given one."
"Wow you really meant short, huh?" Chase said as he was surprised by the short and straight up answer given by the pup he had just met.
"Well yes of course, I told you long story short."
"Uhh, okay." Chase said as he couldn't find a flaw in that logic.
"Ryder." Kim could be heard calling from the stairs, Ryder walked out of the room and came back shortly there after with a cardboard box in his hands. He placed it down just inside the door off to the side to not hinder anyone.
"Here's your stuff." Ryder said looking at the grey pup.
"Thank you." He simply said as he walked over to and opened the cardboard box, he started pulling out the stuff from the box, first a pup bed just like Chase's and Marshall's but green. Then a green water bowl, he took another look inside before deciding to push the box away towards the wall, the stuff still inside the box rattled as he moved it.
"Is it okay if I put my bed there?" The pup asked as he pointed towards an empty corner of the room.
"Of course, you can put it wherever you want." Ryder said. Marshall wondered why he didn't wanna sleep over by Ryders bed with him and Chase.
"Boys food's ready." A voice could be heard calling from downstairs,
"Alright! Let's go eat guys." Ryder said excitedly as he was starving.
"You guys go ahead, I'll be down in a minute." The gray pup said as he was moving his stuff to the corner.
"Okay, be quick." Marshall said as the rest walked out of the room, as they were walking down the stairs Ryder stopped them and bent down to them.
"I know he's a bit... different but make sure to make him feel welcome, he's a nice pup." Ryder whispered to the pups, they both nodded before Ryder and them kept walking down the stairs.
"Hello boys. Where's uh..." Kim said as she was placing the food on the table.
"He'll be down in a minute." Ryder responded as they all sat down around the table, shortly there after the gray pup appeared through the doorframe and hopped up and sat down next to Chase and Marshall on the padded bench. As they were eating the gray pup didn't say anything but he did eat a lot of food.
"My, you're a hungry one aren't you?" Kim said as the gray pup quickly cleaned his plate.
"Yeah, I haven't eaten much uh.. ever, as far back as I can remember." He said in a normal conversational tone as he was grabbing more food.
"Oh..." Kim said as her smile faded a little.
"Hey you wanna go for a walk with me, Chase, and Ryder after were done eating?" Marshall asked.
"Yeah sure, seems nice." He said and continued eating. Eating until he couldn't take another bite of the most delicious food he had ever eaten.
"Alright, you ready?" Marshall asked the gray pup.
"Yes." He responded and jumped of the seat followed by Chase, Marshall, and Ryder as they walked out the door.
"He doesn't talk much does he?" Kim asked looking at Nick.
"Oh no, there you're wrong, You just haven't talked to him about the right thing. Me and Ryder mentioned that we were at the car expo on the way over here, and he could not stop asking questions about it. That pup knows more about cars than me and Ryder combined." Nick said thinking back on the car ride here.
"Really?" She asked.
"Yeah, and don't even get him started on anything engineering. He won't shut his mouth for hours." He said chuckling.
"Is all that stuff you asked me to buy for him then?"
"Yeah he didn't wanna leave all his tools in the city, but he clearly couldn't stay and starve there alone so me and Ryder promised him new tools."
"Huh." Kim said as she looked out the window at Ryder and the pups walking towards town.
Sometime later
"You guys do a lot of good for this place, huh." The gray pup said as he sat down in his pup bed exhausted from all the walking and running.
"Yeah, it's really fun." Marshall said excitedly as he, Ryder, and Chase had been helping the people in town with stuff almost everyday now and they all loved every second of it.
"Yeah I can tell, why don't you guys use any tools though?" He asked.
"Well we do, I've got a bunch of things, Flashlight, screwdriver, hammer." Ryder said.
"Yeah but you don't." The gray pup said pointing at Marshall and Chase.
"Yeah well, it's a bit hard to carry stuff you know." Chase pointed out.
"Huh, I guess it is." The gray said as he though to himself.
"Now back to First On The Scene" A man could be heard saying as Chase turned on the TV.
"Hard to carry... Hard, to, carry. Maybe?" The gray pup thought to himself, he looked in the cardboard box again and pulled out a big roll of paper and a pencil before he began drawing on the paper.
30 minutes later
"First on the scene will be back after a word from our sponsors." A man could be heard saying from the TV.
"Man I hate ads." Marshall sighed.
"Yeah." Chase agreed. He looked over toward the corner and saw the gray pup sitting there completely still looking at the paper with a pen in paw.
"Hey!" Chase yelled and waved to get the gray pups attention but got no answer.
"Hey floppy ear." Chase tried again with no answer. Chase picked up a small pillow and flung it across the room landing on the gray pup.
"Wha- uh, what?" He said as he was pulled out of his thoughts.
"What's up?" Chase asked looking at the pup.
"Nothing, why?" He asked confused about why the Shepherd asked him.
"You haven't moved in like half an hour." Chase chuckled at the clueless pup.
"Oh yeah I was just- actually Chase can you come over here for a minute?" The pup asked.
"Uh sure." Chase said slightly confused before he jumped off the bed and walked over to the pup.
"What's up?" Chase asked as he stopped in front of the gray pup.
"Hold still for a second."
"What?" Chase asked confused before the gray pup quickly walked up to him and wrapped a measuring tape around his chest.
"What was that?!" Chase asked now extremely confused about what was happening.
"A measuring tape." The pup said as he looked back down at the paper and wrote something.
"Yeah but why?"
"To get a measurement, for my blueprint." He responded as he erased something on the paper.
"For your what? Actually just... I don't know just keep doing your thing, I'm sure it's cool." Chase said giving up on trying to understand the gray pup as the show was about to start again.
"And back he goes, sitting there like a rock." Chase chuckled as he jumped up on the bed and sat down next to Marshall and Ryder again.
"Rocky." Marshall mumbled to himself.
"What was that Marshall?" Chase said as he heard that Marshall said something.
"Rocky. Rocky is a cool name." Marshall said and looked up at Ryder.
"Yeah, you're right buddy." Ryder agreed.
"Hey buddy, what do you think?" Ryder asked the gray pup but got no response.
"Chase." Ryder said as he gestured towards the gray pup. Chase smiled as he picked up another pillow and threw it at the gray pup.
"Ah! Sorry, what?" The gray pup asked confused.
"How do you like the name Rocky?" Ryder asked.
"Short, simple, common. I like it." Rocky said with a smile, before immediately staring back at his paper losing the smile immediately.
"Well at least it's accurate." Chase chuckled as the show came on again.
Flashback ends
"You named Rocky?!" Everest said in disbelief looking at Marshall.
"Well I mean, I came up with the name, yes." Marshall said with a small proud smile on his face.
"I never knew that."
"Well I mean you didn't know any of this until now." Chase pointed out.
"Yeah I guess, wait why didn't you tell me any of this?" Everest asked.
"I guess it's just never been brought up, if it not here you probably would have heard about it in a few days at the anniversary party." Ryder pointed out.
"Yeah I can't wait for that, it's gonna be so fun." Everest said excitedly.
"Yeah I know right, but let's continue the story, it gets good soon." Marshall said.
"Okay, well the next day..." Ryder continued the story.
Flashback
Chase woke up before Marshall and Ryder as usual, as he was quietly leaving the room he noticed that Rocky wasn't in his bed.
"Must be downstairs already." Chase thought to himself as he left the room and quietly closed the door behind him. He walked down the stair and in to the kitchen where he saw Kim and Nick at the table drinking coffee.
"Morning Chase." Nick said with a smile as he saw Chase come down the stairs.
"Good morning Nick." He said as he looked around the kitchen.
"Have you seen Rocky?" Chase asked as he didn't see him in the kitchen.
"Have I seen what?" Nick asked confused.
"Oh sorry, Marshall came up with a name for him and he liked it so now he's Rocky." Chase explained.
"That's a pretty cool name, and yeah he brought some of his stuff to the garage earlier."
"Oh okay, thanks." Chase said with a smile as he walked out of the kitchen and towards the door. He opened the door and walked outside into the cold morning air feeling a chill run down his spine from the temperature difference before he stepped of the porch to the slippery wet rock path. He walked across the dewy grass as he made his way to the garage. He opened the door to the garage and once inside he shook his paws in an attempt to dry them, he looked up and saw Rocky on a tall stool in front of Nicks metal workbench where he was doing something that Chase couldn't see from below.
"Morning Rocky." Chase said as he was walking closer to Rocky stepping over piles of Nicks garbage.
"Good morning Chase, how are you?" Rocky asked as he turned around on the stool.
"Good, uh what are you doing?" Chase asked as he saw Rocky holding some kind of tool Chase was unfamiliar with.
"Well Nick said I could use anything in these piles here if I wanted. So I was just making a prototype from the blueprints I made." Rocky explained.
"You mean all the garbage on the floor here?" Chase asked confused as to why he would wanna use any of this stuff.
"It's not garbage Chase, it's a bunch of unused parts."
"Well it still looks like garbage to me. What are you making anyways?"
"You said it was hard for you to carry stuff so I made this." Rocky said and held up a welded sheet metal box with some straps attached.
"What is that?" Chase asked confused as to what he was looking at.
"I call it a dog pack but in your case, a pup pack." Rocky said proudly as he hopped down from the stool.
"Here try it on." Rocky said as he handed it to Chase.
"How do I wear it?" Chase asked looking confused at the box he was now holding.
"Just put it on your back and tighten the straps around your chest." Rocky explained, Chase put on the box and tightened the straps until it was stuck to his back.
"It's not very comfortable." Chase pointed out as he shifted the pup pack on his back.
"Yeah I haven't had time to add padding yet." Rocky explained.
"So now what?" Chase asked as he was just standing there with a metal box on his back.
"Pull one of those ripcords on either side of the pack." Rocky said as he stepped aside.
"Uh okay." Chase said as he pulled one of the cords causing the side of the box to flip open revealing a big flashlight that turned on as soon as it left the pack.
"Whoa, that's so cool. What does this one do?" Chase asked as he pulled the other cord causing the other side of the pack to open, revealing an old stereo speaker screwed together with some other parts.
"What's that?" Chase asked causing the speaker to repeat his words in a loud volume.
"Oh I see. How did you make this? It's so cool." Chase pointed out as he pulled both cords again causing the tools to close back into the pack.
"No, it still needs some tweaks, and padding." Rocky said as he grabbed the pack back from Chase.
"But it's still cool." Chase said receiving no response. Rocky scanned the piles before spotting something and walking over to it. It was an old foam mattress, he ripped a chunk out of it and hopped back up on the stool with the mattress and pack. Rocky quickly cut a nice rectangle from the foam and swiftly fixed it to the underside of the pup pack.
"There we go, that should feel much better now." Rocky said as he handed it back to Chase.
"Yeah, that's a lot better." Chase said as he tightened the straps a little more.
"You gotta show this to Ryder." Chase said.
"No, it's just a prototype, it's not even ready yet." Rocky tried explaining to Chase.
"I don't know what that means, all I know is that it's really cool. Come on let's go.
"Okay fine, just wait up" Rocky said.
"For what?" Chase said as he turned back around and saw Rocky taping small plastic bags to his paws.
"What are you doing?" Chase asked very confused.
"I don't wanna get my paws wet." Rocky said as he taped the final bag on his paws.
"Uh okay I guess." Chase said as Rocky stood up and they began walking back through the dewy grass towards the door. As they stepped inside Rocky took off the bags and they were walking past the kitchen to the stairs.
"What are you wearing Chase?" Nick asked seeing the pup with a strange box on his back.
"Rocky made this cool backpack." Chase said as he quickly showed of the tools before excitedly continuing towards the stairs with Rocky following behind.
"See I told you he was a smart one." Nick said looking back at Kim.
Chase and Rocky walked in to Ryder's room and saw Marshall and Ryder sitting on his bed and chatting.
"Ryder look at this thing Rocky made." Chase said as he excitedly showed of all the features of the pup pack.
"Whoa." Marshall said in awe as he had never seen anything like it before.
"That's really good Rocky." Ryder said as he petted him on his head.
"No, it needs adjustments still." Rocky said as he went back to his bed in the corner and pulled out another piece of paper.
"Okay buddy, if you need any help you can ask me." Ryder said.
"Okay thanks Ryder." Rocky said with a smile as he went back to his paper.
"Hey pups I'm gonna grab some breakfast, are you coming with?" Ryder asked Marshall and Chase.
"No, I'm gonna watch the new episode of First On The Scene." Chase said.
"Oh that's on now?" Marshall asked.
"Yeah."
"Sweet!" Marshall said excitedly as he jumped back on the bed and switched on the TV.
"Alright pups just don't forget to eat." Ryder said as he was leaving the room.
"Okay Ryder." Both pups said as he closed the door.
"Hey Rocky, you wanna watch with us?" Marshall asked looking at the gray pup in the corner.
"No thank you Marshall, I'm trying to figure this out." Rocky explained not taking his gaze off the paper.
"Come on you gotta have a little fun, not thinking about it for a while might help you think about the problem differently anyways." Marshall explained.
"You know what Marshall, you've got a point. I guess I'll watch a little I suppose." Rocky said as he actually thought Marshall had a good argument. Rocky jumped up on the bed next to Marshall but lost his balance and accidentally bumped in to Marshall as he sat down.
" 'Tschuldigung- uh I mean sorry." Rocky corrected himself.
"What was that?" Chase asked confused as to what Rocky just said.
"Uh G-german, sorry."
"You speak German?" Chase asked very confused.
"N-no- y-yes- uh it's a long story. One which I can't shorten." Rocky said avoiding the subject.
"Uh... okay." Chase said as the show started on the TV.
Flashback ends
"Wait! Rocky made the pup packs!?" Everest asked very confused as she never thought about Rocky much before, but was now realizing that he was much more than he let off.
"Yeah Rocky made the first pup pack and later me and him improved it and made specialized ones for every pup. And me and him also build all of the vehicles we use." Ryder explained.
"WHAT!? How has no one told me this?" Everest asked Now very shocked.
"I thought you knew." Chase said.
"No I didn't, no one told me."
"I guess everyone just kinda assumed that everyone else knew." Marshall said and laughed a little.
"Also wait, Rocky speaks German?" Everest asked.
"We don't know, he's never told any of us definitively but it's very possible considering how smart he is." Chase said.
"Well now that Rocky is in the story we can fast forward a little to the proper start of the PAW Patrol. So after a few weeks of us four getting better at helping people..." Ryder continued the story.
Flashback
Chase was sitting bored out of his mind just staring at the trees passing by outside in the darkness, Ryder had fallen asleep with Marshall in his lap while Rocky was reading a book about something Chase didn't understand. He looked forward at Kim in the front seat.
"Why are we going to Adventure Bay anyways?" Chase asked as he was getting really bored with the long car ride there.
"It's a really nice place, good beaches, nice water." She said.
"Ugh, water." Rocky commented as he continued to read.
"I mean I guess that's nice." Chase responded to Kim.
"And what's your deal with water?" Chase asked as he turned to the reading Mixed Breed.
"U-uh, It just gets everywhere and is cold." Rocky said.
"Well yeah but when you're in the water it's fun."
"I-I just don't like it I guess." Rocky said as he buried his face in his book.
"What's up with him?" Chase thought to himself but he quickly forgot about it as he saw a sign pass by.
"Welcome to Adventure Bay, finally!" Chase said in excitement, Ryder and Marshall woke up from the loud pup.
"Huh, what are you screaming about?" Marshall yawned as he lifted his head.
"We're here, finally!" Chase repeated.
"Sweet, I really need to stretch my legs." Marshall said.
"You said it." Ryder yawned. Chase saw buildings starting to appear around them as they drove through a town street, he saw the streetlights passing by like bright stars lighting up the way.
"This is it." Nick said as he came to a stop in a parking lot in front of a small building with a sign that read Adventure Bay Inn it was a small two story building nestled tightly next to all the other building on the street.
"Alright guys grab your stuff and let's go check in." Nick said as he stepped out of the truck and opened up the back to allow everyone to grab their stuff. Kim grabbed two suitcases from the back while Chase, Marshall, and Rocky grabbed their respective solid color pup packs which now looked and felt much better after some modifications from Ryder and Rocky. Everyone walked inside and saw a woman sitting behind a counter.
"Hello, we have a booking." Nick said to the woman.
"Okay, what last name is it under?" She asked.
"Torres. T-O-R-R-E-S." Nick said as the woman typed it in on her computer.
"Yes here it is, your rooms are number seven and eight. Here are your keycards." She said as she handed two keycards to Nick.
"Thank you." Nick responded before they all walked up the stairs toward their rooms.
"Okay, so how do you guys wanna do this? There are two beds per room, so do you guys want to be in the same one?" Kim asked looking at Ryder and the pups who all nodded.
"Okay then, here you go you'll be in room seven." Kim said before handing Ryder a keycard and a suitcase.
"Thanks Mom, goodnight." Ryder said as he and the pups entered room seven.
"Night boys." She said before Ryder closed the door.
"Alright pups I'm exhausted, let's get a good night's sleep so we can have fun tomorrow." Ryder said as he flopped onto the bed.
"Yeah me too." Chase said as he hopped up on the other bed with a yawn.
"Goodnight guys." Marshall said as he jumped up and lay and cuddled up against Ryder. Then Rocky jumped up and laid down by the foot end of the bed with Chase in it.
Flashback ends
"I've never heard of that place before." Everest pointed out.
"Yeah about that, the next day..." Ryder continued the story.
Flashback
Chase, Marshall, and Ryder were in the water playing while Rocky was up on the beach reading a book and enjoying the hot sun and the cool sea breezes.
"Hey guys what do you say we go grab some food?" Ryder asked.
"Yeah I'm hungry." Marshall said as Chase nodded in agreement. The three walked out of the sea and onto the sand towards Rocky.
"Hey, Rocky we're gonna go grab something to eat." Ryder said.
"Yeah, I'm getting a bit hungry as well."
"Mom! Dad! We're gonna go buy some food, we'll be back in a few." Ryder yelled over to his parents who were some distance away on the beach.
"Okay!" Kim yelled back. The pups started walking back towards the inn to grab some food.
"I want some beef right now." Chase said imagining the taste in his mouth.
"Yeah, beef sounds great right now." Rocky responded as he felt his stomach rumbling.
"Yes agr- HOLY SHIT!" Marshall suddenly shouted startling the other three.
"What!" Chase quickly asked worriedly.
"The inn is on fire!" Marshall shouted and pointed towards the inn they were staying at.
"Come on guys! Let's go!" Ryder shouted as they started running towards the inn and within a minute they were among the crowd that had formed in front of the building.
"We gotta do something!" Marshall said worriedly.
"Yes you're right! uh..." Ryder said and started looking around through the crowds for a way to help the situation before he had an idea.
"Chase use your megaphone to clear away the crowd from that fire hydrant. Marshall prepare your water cannon and Rocky use your wrench to fix the hose to the fire hydrant so he has pressure." All three pups nodded. Chase pulled the cord on his pup pack extending the megaphone.
"EVERYONE MAKE WAY! CLEAR AWAY!" He shouted through his megaphone causing the crowd to move back allowing Rocky and Marshall to reach the fire hydrant. Marshall pulled a cord on his pup pack extending a simple fixed water cannon above his head and releasing a hose out the back of the pack. Rocky quickly grabbed the hose and pulled a cord on his pup pack causing a wrench to fall out of it, he quickly picked it up and fixed the hose to the hydrant, and turned on the pressure.
"You're good to go Marshall!" Rocky shouted before Marshall pulled the other cord causing the water to go spraying out from the water cannon towards the inferno in front of him. Marshall had to aim the cannon using his entire body as it was completely fixed to his pup pack. Chase was worriedly watching the flames erupting from the windows of the building, then suddenly he heard something... Crying, there was a child inside the building crying. Chase knew what he had to do.
"Ryder there's someone in there!" Chase screamed to Ryder before he quickly bolted towards the open door of the building.
"Chase!" He heard Ryder yell out behind him before he felt an immense heat wash over him as he made it through the door. The lobby was filled with fire and smoke, he stayed close to the ground to avoid inhaling the thick black smoke as he tried to listen for the screams. Chase heard them coming from a corridor to the right as he came closer he figured out that the sound was coming from room number 3 which had its door open. Chase quickly ran toward it as he felt the heat intensifying around him, as he rounded the corner and peered into the room he saw a young boy with brown hair in an orange t-shirt crying up against a wall. He quickly ran up to the boy.
"Follow me!" He yelled and tugged on the boys green shorts causing him to look up, he nodded slightly as he followed Chase out of the room. Chase was about to enter back into the lobby but suddenly, a big wooden beam fell from the ceiling with a wave of heat blocking his path to the exit.
"We gotta go another way!" Chase yelled as he ran to the other end of the corridor where he saw a window. Chase and the boy quickly ran up to the window but when Chase tried opening it the metal handle was red hot causing him to burn his paw.
"AGH!" He yelped, he had to find a way through this window but in looking around he found nothing to break it with. As the fire was quickly approaching from behind Chase could only think of one thing to do.
"You have to follow me!" Chase screamed at the boy before he took a running start and threw himself through the window causing it to break into many sharp shards of glass, Chase landed on his side outside on the concrete sidewalk as he slid across the broken glass cutting up his skin. The boy quickly climbed out the window behind Chase and was taken by the firefighter that had now arrived, one firefighter picked up Chase and carried him away from the building.
"You did good pup." Chase heard him say as he was placed in the back of an ambulance.
"Alex!" A man came running towards the boy before he hugged him.
"Thank you so much!" The man said to the firefighter.
"It's not me you should be thanking, it's them over there." The firefighter said and pointed to Chase being wrapped up in the ambulance surrounded by Marshall, Ryder, Rocky, and their parents.
"What's happening Mr. Porter!" A lady with brown hair and a blue shirt came running towards him.
"They saved Alex." Mr. Porter said as he was hugging the boy with an orange shirt.
"Who?" She asked, He pointed towards the ambulance. She began walking towards the ambulance to thank them but was stopped by a firefighter.
"Ma'am you're the mayor right?" He asked
"Yes, Mayor Goodway." She responded.
"This could have turned out way worse than just one building if it weren't for those brave pups and the fact that we were close to the town when we got the call. A town of this size needs a proper emergency response team as this could have burned the entire town to the ground." He said before he had to run off to help someone. She walked up to the ambulance.
"Woah Chase." Marshall said.
"You were such a brave pup." Ryder said as he held Chase's paw while the EMT was wrapping his back.
"Excuse me. Hello I'm Mayor Goodway, I just wanted to thank you for saving Alex." Mayor Goodway said.
"U-uh, thanks." Chase said as he grunted from the pain. Mayor Goodway looked down at the rest of the pups and saw Rocky repacking their pup packs.
"What are those." Mayor Goodway asked as she saw the pup packs.
"Those are our pup packs, we use them to help people." Marshall responded with a big smile.
"Oh, so you guys are like a little team?" She asked.
"Yeah I guess you could say that." Ryder said. Goodway thought back on what the firefighter said to her earlier as she got an idea.
"A team you say... How would you guys like to work as the emergency response team of the city? You know really helping people." She asked.
"What really?" They all said as their faces lit up.
"Mom? Dad?" Ryder asked with hopeful eyes.
Flashback ends
"And the rest is history." Ryder finished the story.
"No way you jumped through a window Chase." Everest said in disbelief.
"I sure did and I've got the scars to prove it." Chase said proudly as he stood up on his three working legs and walked over to Everest letting her feel along his back.
"Whoa." She said as she could feel many scars running along his back under his fur.
"Yep, Chase is the original fire rescue pup." Ryder chuckled.
"No *Yawn* He's just the first to actually rescue anyone from a fire." Marshall said.
"Yeah *Yawn* sure buddy." Chase said.
"Alright, pups I *Yawn* think it's time we get some sleep."
"Agreed." Chase said as he walked back to his bed and closed his eyes to the sound of wind and crickets outside.
