Jack continues to drive to CTU. Tony should be there already, or there very soon. One way or another this will likely be all over within two hours, three at most. Jack hopes to be back with his family by then. But then he is suddenly rear ended. Jack and the other driver both pull over. The other driver seems genuinly sorry. He apologizes and offers to trade insurance information with Jack. Jack doesn't recognize this man, he could be just a careless driver. But just as Jack gets out of his car the other driver pulls a silencer on him and fires. This other driver is Kevin Carroll, and he wants to murder Jack Bauer. Jack is unable to grab his firearm, but he is able to hold on to the tracker. All he can do now is run and try to lure this assasin further away from CTU.

Tony Almeida arrives at CTU and hands the chip to Jamey Farrell. She begins accessing the chip, there are no security barriers. Gaines must have figured if he were dead he wanted the chip to be accessed. He even recorded a statement on it.

Gaines: My name is Ira Gaines. I'm a former Navy Seal and current mercenary. If you're seeing this it means I am dead, possibly betrayed by my current employer. If so, this is my revenge. This chip details all of my employers activities, as well as the signal to track certain bombs to prevent the next terrrorist attacks. Good luck.

Jamey accessed the chip, particularly the signal for the bombs. But there was a slight problem.

Jamey: The signals for the remaining bombs were damaged, possibly when Gaines was shot.
Mason: Can you repair it in time?
Jamey: Possibly.
Mason: Get to it, stopping the next bombings is our top priority right now.

Mason called president Keaton with another update.

Mason: Mr president, we have the chip and it seems legitimate.
Keaton: Do you know where the homicide bombers are?
Mason: That part was damaged. Our technicians are doing everything they can to repair that part in time. We will also learn who else was involved, but stopping the bombings is our top priority right now.
Keaton: I understand. Keep me informed.
Mason: Yes sir.

As his call with Mason ended Jim Gardner entered the Oval Office.

Gardner: You should know sir that your old friend Dave has been arrested.
Keaton: I thought he was under house arrest pending trial.
Gardner: It seems he's now been arrested for murder.
Keaton: Who did he kill?
Gardner: Allegedly, Carl Webb. I'm told that the chief of police for DC wishes to speak to you.
Keaton: About what?
Gardner: That I don't know, but he should be here within the hour.

Kevin Carroll continues his pursuit of Jack Bauer. It is very risky, killing a man in broad daylight like this. But Kevin fears what Dimitry will do if he fails. And if the chip makes it to CTU there will be no safe place for any of them to hide. Jack makes it into an abandoned building and Kevin follows him. Jack is experienced in guerilla war. He doesn't know this building, but he hopes to be able to use whatever he can to his advantage.
