Rose Crusade

Ruby was bouncing with excitement so much, Roman had to hold her down. "Now, Ruby, I get it. You're excited for your part of the tournament, and the chance to duel against your sister. But it's absolutely imperative that you remember your training today. No injuries and no showing off. Got it?" "Got it. Wish me luck!" Ruby barely managed to get out before rushing out to the stage. Roman couldn't help but be nervous. Even though everything was going according to plan, the moment filled him with such worry that he almost wanted to cancel the whole thing and just do things the easy way. But he had to remind himself that this way would yield better results in the long run. He hoped.

"OUR NEXT MATCH BEGINS! RUBY ROSE THE BLACK ROSE VS JILL DELAUNCEBEAUX THE KNIGHT OF DUELS! START!"

As Ruby entered the stage, she had to stifle laughter. Was her opponent seriously in a suit of armor? He looked ridiculous. "Hey, Jill. Halloween isn't for another few months. Where'd you get that? Discount at the toy store?" She taunted. Her opponent was not amused. "You laugh, witch, but your reign of terror ends here. I will expose you for the monster you are." Ruby rolls her eyes, and readies her duel disk. Guess Roman was right. Not everybody's ready for the real me.

"I will go first." Jill continued as he drew a card. "I summon forth Masked Knight Level 3." A stout man in a suit of armor appeared (Level 3/1500). "Once per turn, my knight can forgo attacking to deal 400 damage to you. Have at thee!" The knight swung his sword, releasing an energy blast that struck Ruby (Ruby 4000-3600). Ruby deliberately yawned in response. "You done?" "Next, I activate my spell, Level Up! To advance my masked knight from level 3 to level 5." The knight grows from being shorter than both duelists to being taller (Level 5/2300). "Now it's sword swing has grown to deal 1000 damage. Take this!"

The masked knight swung its sword again (Ruby 3600-2600). She clutches her chest in fake pain and pretends to falter. "Oh! The pain! The pain! I think I see the light!" Ruby then clutches her chest and giggles. "Seriously, can you chill out? I'm about to bust a gut over here." Jill growls in annoyance. "I set a card and end my turn." Ruby calms down and adopts a steely gaze.

"I draw!" She proclaims as she draws, striking a little pose as she does so. "First, I activate Seed of Deception. This lets me bring out a level 2 or lower plant from my hand for free. So I will play the tuner monster Glow-Up Bulb." A plant bulb with an eye sprouting out of the middle and some stems growing out of the top appears (Level 1/100). "I'll then summon my Lord Poison from my hand." Besides the bulb appears a mass of plant matter with claws (Level 4/1500). "Now, I tune my level 4 Lord Poison with my level 1 Glow-Up Bulb! Ensnaring the hearts of all mortals, bloom into the most beautiful poison! Synchro summon! Bewitching Rafflesia!" The monsters perform their dance as they give way to a large flower that opens to reveal a plant-woman (Level 5/1500).

"Bewitching Rafflesia can take control of one of your monsters for a turn. Come here, Masked Knight! You're mine, now." Ruby says before giving her best evil laugh. Bewitching Rafflesia releases spores from her hand that she blows towards Masked Knight. The knight's eyes turn pink as it rushes over to Ruby's side. "Foul witch! What have you done to my knight?" Jill demanded. But he was not shaken. He has Mirror Force face-down and will take out the traitorous Masked Knight and its captor the moment Ruby declares an attack. "Hey, it's not like I can do much with him. Not only can Masked Knight not attack directly, but its effects are negated and Rafflesia can't attack at all."

"Heh. Then what was the point of all of that?" Jill asked. "Well, remember that Glow-Up Bulb I used to bring out Rafflesia?" Ruby answered. "It wants to come back, so I'll do just that by sending the top card of my deck to the graveyard." A purple portal appears, and Glow-Up Bulb emerges from it. "Then, I activate my spell Level Bloom. Glow-Up Bulb gets a glow-up, bringing its level up by one, and if it's used for a synchro summon, that synchro monster gains 500 attack points. Now I can tune my level 5 Masked Knight with my level 2 Glow-Up Bulb! The bloom of evolution blazes forth. Grow and grow ever stronger! Synchro Summon! Crescent Rose Dragon!" Crescent Rose appeared and gave an intimidating roar (Level 7/2400-2900). The people in the crowd started to get nervous of the dragon.

Ruby explained "When Crescent Rose Dragon is synchro summoned, I can destroy one card you control. I'll get rid of that face-down, thank you very much." Crescent Rose shot out an energy beam from one of its vines that destroyed Mirror Force. "Then I banish my Lord Poison to gain its attack." Crescent Rose eats the spectral image of Lord Poison (2900-4300). Jill steps back a few steps, his previous resolve gone. "Crescent Rose, attack directly. Red Rose Flare!" The red beam from Crescent Rose takes all of Jill's life points in one fell swoop.

"AN UPSET! RUBY ROSE TAKES DOWN JILL DELAUNCEBEAUX IN JUST ONE ATTACK, MOVING ON TO THE SEMIFINALS!"

Jill Delauncebeaux tried to get up, but suddenly felt a sharp pain in his arm. He groaned, nursing it and staring daggers at Ruby. Ruby, meanwhile, thought to go over to help him, but thought better of it. That was stupid. I got too excited, and hurt him. Now, to be fair, Ruby didn't expect them to throw flowers at her or anything. But the boos and jeers still hurt. Roman, watching from high in the stands, shook his head. What did you expect, little red? This is the world around you. Maybe now you'll understand.

"Uh, well, you see Miss Cinder, the energy reading read...well, they read nothing." Zigzix sheepishly admitted. Cinder squinted at the broadcast, trying to get a read on Ruby. "The problem must lie with her opponent." She concluded. "She didn't take the duel seriously, so she didn't give it her all." I'll have to have her opponent pry into her head more. Time to make a call.
