Chapter 5
Lucy spent the next few weeks on the ship training and learning the ways of Neverland life. She had to spend most of her time below deck, for fear that she would be spotted by spying lost boys or a pesky fairy. But Lucy didn't mind this too much, as for the first time in her life she felt like she was actually wanted.
She was given lessons on fighting by Gale and Starkey, something that she found she had a no natural talent for, being small and slim she had no natural strength. So instead, she was taught to be quick and target her opponents weakness'. She also found, the more time that she spent with Gale the less she disliked him.
The boatswain Smee taught her all about the island and its inhabitants, the Indians, the fairies, the mermaids, the beasts and of course the lost boys. Important information that she would need to know if she was to pose convincingly as the princess Tiger Lily.
But her favourite moment of every day was when she was allowed to go down to her father's cabin. They would repeat the plan together and Hook would tell her more about his hatred for the boy Peter Pan. While these sessions weren't particularly fun for Lucy she loved the moments where for a second or two she could feel like a normal girl with her father. The seconds where he would smile at her or they would laugh together gave Lucy a feeling of happiness that she had never experienced before.
There were occasions when they would hear the tic tok tic tok of the crocodile who had swallowed Hook's hand and she would watch her father's face go pale. The fear that he showed somehow made him seem more human, and Lucy liked that. Her father was strong, but she liked the moments when he showed emotion, when he proved to her that despite his stony exterior, he was capable of them.
Lucy spent most of her free time in her cabin with Nibs, the two of them found they could talk and laugh and play cards for hours. Even though Lucy most looked forward to those moments in her father's study she found that these moments with Nibs were when she was at her happiest.
A few weeks passed. Then one night when Lucy went down to her fathers' study and they repeated the plan together as usual… Hook claimed triumphantly that she was ready! They would begin tomorrow.
