[23rd day of the Great Tree Moon, Imperial Year 1180 (Morning) - Advisory Room]
Archbishop Rhea sat at her desk, reviewing the Entrance Exam results of the Officer's Academy's newest student.
"Is all of this accurate?"
"Yes," Seteth, standing in front of her, answered.
The Entrance Exam consisted of two parts: one written and one practical. In the written part, Haruki's score was average at best, but given his mercenary background, it was an accomplishment in its own right. His tutor had taught him well given the circumstances.
However, those results were completely overshadowed by the practical exam results.
Seteth remembered arriving at the training grounds where Haruki's practical exam was to take place. The advisor insisted that he did not need to take it due to his injuries; if he did well enough on the written portion, it would be enough for him to join the Upper Echelon. However, the boy was adamant on proceeding. Haruki even went as far as saying: "I'll only need three hits, anyway."
Seteth found his words arrogant. Regardless, Haruki was allowed to proceed. And to the shock of Seteth, Haruki prevailed… in three hits.
While dodging all of the attacks, he patiently waited for the opportune moment to strike. When that moment came, he pounced at the chance without hesitation. All while keeping such a bored expression.
To think that Jeralt raised such a boy…
"His results in the written exam were passable, but as you can see, his practical exam was near flawless. If it were not for his reckless abandonment of his injuries, he may have scored perfect marks."
To be expected, however, Haruki kept favoring the injured leg, which caused his technique to be sloppy at times. That may have been the biggest reason why he was fighting cautiously for most of the fight. And after the bout, his leg gave out. Luckily, all things considered, the unconscious knight helped the boy break his fall. Although, the sight of a Haruki sitting on his back was a humiliation the knight should be glad not to be awake for.
"Jeralt has taught his child well, but it is obvious he has much to learn," the advisor concluded.
"I see," Rhea nodded. "Was there anything else you thought of young Haruki, Seteth?"
"What do you mean?" the advisor gave her a quizzical look at the sudden question.
"You have seen his fighting prowess first hand. But what about his character? You have gotten the opportunity to speak with the child personally. I am curious to know what you make of him."
"Hmm… his character," he mused for a moment before sharing. "The boy isn't afraid to speak his mind whenever he wishes, leading him to have quite the short temper. And yet, there were times when he was very reserved. It was very difficult to read what he was thinking… ominously so."
"Ominous?"
"It was simply a faint feeling when I spoke with him. Although, I cannot lie that it wasn't concerning."
Seteth recalled how quickly Haruki became angered when the subject of the tuition fees was brought up. While that was to be expected, what came after was what he found odd. From the sound of the teacup breaking, all his anger vanished and he calmed down instantly, as if he became lost in his own thoughts.
"..." Rhea remained quiet, her expression never changing. Seteth talked about Haruki being unreadable, but there are times when Rhea can be just as difficult. "Do you believe that he may pose a threat to the Church?"
"…"
Again, he was not prepared for such a sudden question, especially when it was now regarding the safety of the Church and its inhabitants. Seteth thought about his next words very carefully.
"A threat… No. There is no proof that he would act against the Church. However, it would not hurt to keep a close watch on his actions during his stay. There is still much we must learn about him after all. Although…"
Despite the omen Seteth felt, he could not ignore something about the meeting. He never smiled throughout the meeting, but Haruki could not hide the warm genuineness within his eye when he spoke about his father and older brother. Seteth knew that feeling very well, and it was the only time throughout the meeting he felt he connected with Haruki. But that one connection was enough.
"I do pray that my concerns are misplaced. He is a boy who faced too much hardship and fought battles only he knows. He may be callous, but that does not make him a bad person."
"..."
For a moment, Rhea looked surprised by her advisor's answer. It was an understandable response, given how cautious he was. But after a moment, she smiled.
"Then you and I are in agreement."
"...?"
Now, it was Seteth's turn to look surprised.
"While he is not related by blood with Jeralt," Rhea continued, "Haruki is still his son. One who was taught to be dependable… and whose heart seems to be in the right place."
"You're talking about his actions at Remire Village."
Rhea nodded. "I am aware that it was him who found the House Leaders, and he made the decision to risk his own life to help them. Whatever his motives, it does not change the fact that he initiated the rescue, and he saved the lives of our students."
"Is that why you asked me to offer him the Seiros' Chosen Scholarship?"
To offer the scholarship to the boy was the favor Rhea asked of him. Under normal circumstances, the aid is offered to those most devoted to the teachings of Seiros. In Haruki's case, he was far from it, and given the circumstances of how Jeralt deserted the Knights years ago, the scholarship technically should never have been an option. But Rhea made an exception and gave her blessings, regardless.
"I deemed him worthy of such a prestigious award. And I will have faith that he will not have ill-intent toward the people of the Church."
"...As you wish."
"However, should he pose a threat to the safety of the monastery, we will do what we must."
"Very well," Seteth sighed. "For now, with his results and your approval, Haruki is officially qualified for the Seiro's Chosen Scholarship. We should now begin to -."
Knock Knock Knock
The sound of the knocking door interrupted their conversation.
"Enter," Seteth commanded. Then, the door opened and in came one of the Church's youngest assistance. A young Almyran boy.
"Cyril," Rhea greeted the boy. "Your timing is impeccable. Have you completed your tasks for the morning?"
"Yup, they're all done, Lady Rhea," Cyril answered gladly. "Was there something else ya needed?"
"Yes actually. I would like you to find Haruki Eisner and tell him I am ready to meet him. Summon the professors as well."
"Got it. By the way, there's someone here wanting to talk to ya. It seemed important."
"Who is it?" Seteth asked.
"One of the House Leaders. Not sure for what, though."
"...Please bring them in," Rhea said.
With a nod Cyril left the room, and in came the person who sought audience with Lady Rhea. It was indeed one of the House Leaders, but Seteth only wondered just what he might need at a time like this. However, Rhea had a good idea.
"Hrm…"
"..."
"Hrmmm…"
"..."
"HRRMMMM!"
"Moaning won't make time go faster, Himari."
"But it's so boring having to waaaait. I might actually die, at this rate! Can we at least walk around or something?"
"No.."
"You're so boring, too!"
"...Whatever," Haruki sighed, turning the page of the Officer's Academy Handbook as he sat at the far corner of his room.
"You're sure enjoying that read. Is there anything worth noting?"
"Curfew for all students is between 11:00 pm to 5:30 am. Under no circumstances - excluding faculty permission or emergencies - should students be within monastery grounds. Should one violate the curfew, they will receive appropriate discipline… Hmph."
"You sound like you're up to no good. Rules are there for a reason," Himari, laying on her stomach on Haruki's bed, chastised him.
"You never know when I'd need to break them."
"That's one way to say you'll break curfew to enjoy a rendezvous."
"Not that again..."
"What? Life without love is fruitless and so very dull… by the way does that book say anything about intimate relationships?"
"No, Himari."
After breakfast, this was what Haruki and Himari had been doing: he was reading the handbook, while she complained about her boredom, but she would occasionally share her piece to make conversation. Sadly for her, the conversations never lasted long. But there was little to be done about it, since it was to kill time while they waited to be summoned by Lady Rhea.
"Today's the day, huh?" She said, starting up another conversation.
"Yeah…"
"You feeling okay about it?"
"Not really,"
"So are you really sure this is what you want to go with?"
"It's the best option I have after thinking about it all this time."
"...I still have this feeling there's another way."
"No time to think about it now."
"... I suppose so… but whatever happens, I'm with you every step of the way."
"..."
"Haruki?"
"..."
He became mute, again, and now it had gotten difficult for Himari to read him. After the last time this happened back at the Dining Hall, Himari wasn't sure whether to be concerned or incredibly annoyed. If anything it may be something trivial. But the way he looked at her, this may actually be serious.
"Himari."
"What is it?"
"...Why are you -"
Knock Knock Knock
But before Haruki could finish asking, someone knocked on the door. Haruki knew who it was the moment he sensed his aura. Getting himself off the floor, he approached the door. Sure enough, as the door opened, Byleth was standing in front of him.
"..."
"..."
"Are they ready?"
"Yes," Byleth nodded. "One of the Church's attendants informed me… I'll wait for you here."
"Right…" Haruki sighed, closing the door on Byleth.
Turning around, he saw Himari grinning from ear to ear. Her boredom was gone.
"YES! The time's finally here!" she cheered, lifting up a brand new uniform. "Alright, Haruki! Put'em on!"
"..."
"Hey! Don't give that disgusted look! The tailors worked hard to make this uniform just for you!"
"Do I really need to wear it now?"
"Of course! You have to dress the part now. Besides, now's a good time to see if some adjusting is needed or something."
"...Tsk," Haruki snatched the uniform from Himari and proceeded to make an attempt to put it on.
Such showy attire really wasn't his thing, and the fact that he was having such a hard time putting it on further proved that. Eventually, with Himari's help, Haruki was now fitted with the Officer's Academy uniform.
"It's… surprisingly breathable,"
The black pants were flexible, and the white shirt and black vest fit neither too tight nor too loose. The black boots were light, perfect to keep his steps quick. In all, it was perfect for physical and strenuous activities. The tailors knew what they were doing when making the uniform, as well as the spares in his wardrobe.
"Mmhmm, looking good," Himari praised, adding the finishing touch to the boy's appearance by wrapping his black scarf around his neck. "By the way, what was it you wanted to ask?"
"Hm? Oh, forget it. It's not important."
"It seemed important to me. You can tell me anything, 'kay?"
"...just drop it, Himari. It's really nothing."
The girl pouted, knowing full well there was something on his mind. Knowing him though, he won't budge, so she gave up… for now.
"Fiiine, if that's what you want. Let's just go, already."
Haruki nodded and they both left the room. Byleth was still waiting for him outside. With a nod from both of them, they walked side by side toward their destination.
"The uniform suits you," Byleth said.
"Eh," Haruki shrugged his shoulders. "At least it doesn't hinder my movements."
"And it looks like your injuries are improving."
"Of course they are."
Haruki had ridden himself from the crutches since yesterday, seeing that he was able to walk just fine without them.
"Sure, the doc played a hand in it, but you shouldn't underestimate how fast my body can heal."
"You shouldn't overestimate it, either, Haru."
"Oh, here we go," Haruki rolled his eye, knowing that he just walked himself into another lecture.
"I heard what happened yesterday. You collapsed because of your injury."
"..."
"What made you think it was a good idea to do the practical portion of the exam?"
"I felt good enough taking it."
"Feeling 'good enough' and actually being able and ready are two different things. That is especially true for you. Your pain tolerance may be high, but that doesn't mean you're invincible."
"I know my limits, By."
"... I wonder about that."
"Huh??"
"Nothing… either way, you must be more mindful of what you're doing."
"Hpmh. says the one who almost got himself killed just the other day."
"All the more reason for me to also be mindful. But, were you not in the same situation?"
"...Touche"
As they conversed with each other, the Eisner brothers reached the Reception Hall, which reminded Byleth about something.
"By the way, Father told me what happened when he saw you here the other day."
"Let me guess… the scholarship?"
"Yes," he nodded. "Although he also mentioned your… encounter."
"..."
"I really don't get you. Why the hell are you getting so worked up over one bun?"
"This isn't about the bun! This is about you stealing something that was obviously in my possession first!"
"And I keep telling you, I got to it first. You ought to be grateful I let you have the other two buns."
"Oh, now I'm supposed to be grateful to you now?!"
"Your two compared to my one, you got a better end of the deal."
"Ugh, the audacity. Clearly you fail to appreciate the delicacy of a sweet bun TRIO."
"So it's about the bun, after all!"
"No it isn't! Honestly, how can someone be so childish?!"
"Childish? Have you looked in the mirror lately?"
"..."
"Hm? Oi, what's wrong? You're looking a little… red."
"Please… Why don't you say that… one more time."
"Geez It was just a simple question… Alright fine, I ask it in a way that even someone like you could understand."
"..."
"Aren't you… being the childish brat in this conversation?"
"...!"
"The hell are you...Oh Sh-"
"It was… a civil dispute," Haruki looked away, messaging his face when the girl slapped him.
"It didn't sound like one," Byleth was obviously not convinced. "It could have been avoided entirely if you didn't give in to your temptations. "
"I regret nothing... Let's get back to the scholarship."
"Yes, about that… have you made a decision? From what Father told me, you were having a hard time making one."
"Calling it a 'hard time' is an understatement."
Despite his talk with Jeralt, Haruki still found it incredibly difficult to decide what to do. It got to the point where he was thinking about it during the exam. It was no wonder he made amateur mistakes during the practical portion.
But after the full day and much deliberation…
"But… I see no other way around choosing the scholarship."
"You don't sound enthused about it."
"I'm not… But we wouldn't be able to afford the fees without it, and considering how things stand with the old man reinstated after deserting the first time, it was the best choice… even if it means becoming a dog to the church."
"I see," Byleth nodded. "But you know you're not alone on this. We can pitch-"
"No."
"...Very well then." Byleth sighed, knowing any attempt of convincing him to seek aid will lead to nowhere. "I will not judge you for your decision, but never forget that me and father are there if you need it."
"Hmph, how supportive of you."
"Do you not want our support?"
"Not being sarcastic this time, you wooden plank."
"...Oh."
"But for this, I'll deal with it my own way… But what about you? How are things on your end since you chose your House?"
While Haruki was busy taking exams and making tough choices, Byleth was busy meeting the students of the Officer's Academy and ultimately choosing which House he wished to teach and lead. In the end, Byleth made a decision…
"The Black Eagles, yeah?"
The House of the Adrestian Empire, led by Edelgard.
"Correct," Byleth nodded. "Although, I can't say things are going smoothly."
"Hm, can't say I'm surprised. Giving lectures and writing on a chalkboard is a lot different than cutting through a battlefield."
"True enough. That's why I'm not sure how to go about teaching the students."
"Aren't the other professors helping you out?"
"Yes. However, implementing their advice into practice is proving difficult."
"If that's the case, you'll just have to do trial and error to find the right method to teach them. If anything else, might as well try to teach them the way the old man trained us."
"Father's training?"
"Yeah. If it worked well enough for us, it might actually be useful in shaping up those noble bastards."
"Haru."
"Am I wrong?"
"...Perhaps not, but your use of profanity must be used at a minimum. I'm sure you've read the handbook."
"Section six, Paragraph 12. I know, I know. I'll try to be more careful. The last thing I need is you sending me to detention."
"Good. Regardless, when thinking about it, Father did have a strict, yet rewarding, method that had shown positive results. It may actually prove useful in planning my teaching method. Thank you for the advice."
"You can thank me with another slice of cake on top of what you already owe me. You haven't forgotten, right?"
"I didn't… And I'll keep that in mind."
"Good. Anyways, one way or another, you'll pull it off somehow. You always do… always.
Passing through the Reception Hall and walking up the stairs, Byleth and Haruki made it to the Audience Chamber doors.
"Ready?"
"As ready as I could ever be, I guess."
With a nod to each other, they each grabbed hold on a handle and opened the doors.
"..."
But the moment he stepped foot inside the room, he stopped in his tracks, and he locked eyes on the first person he saw. A woman, whose most noticeable features were her bright green hair and eyes. She was, by all accounts, a serene beauty, and her robe, jewelry, and over-complicated crown somehow elevated it.
But that was not what captivated the boy.
"This feeling."
He was not even focusing that much, and yet he felt it. Her aura. It was powerful. It was graceful. Caring, in some way. However, it also had this bizarre intensity, like it would unleash hell if provoked.
There was no question. This was Lady Rhea, leader of the Church of Seiros. She very much looked the part, but who could have predicted such a complicated aura?
"Haru?" The sound of Byleth's voice regained Haruki's attention. "What's the matter?"
There was a short pause as Haruki glanced at his older brother. After a moment, he looked back at Lady Rhea who in return gave him a graceful smile.
"Nothing… Just the voice in my head being annoying."
"Hey! I didn't even say anything!"
There was another pause before it was Byleth's turn to speak. "I see… let's go then. They're waiting for us."
"They're?"
Haruki looked away from Lady Rhea to notice others looking at him. There was Seteth and Professor Manuela, and next to her was a tall, older man with a monocle - likely another professor.
Then…
"...Why?"
He saw the last person he wanted to see. The heir of House Reigan: Claude. As their eyes met, with his usual smile, Claude casually saluted him. Although, it only made Haruki want to leave the room much more.
Unfortunately, that wasn't an option.
He huffed and walked across the Chamber to meet with everyone, trying his best to pretend Claude didn't exist and instead focused his attention on the woman in front of him. He still couldn't shake off this uncomfortable feeling.
"I will overlook your insult, this time. But are you sure it's wise not to tell him?" Himari whispered in Haruki's ear.
"Now's not the time."
"...I hope you know what you're doing."
Haruki and Byleth stopped just a few feet in front of the Archbishop. Byleth gave Haruki a nod before joining his fellow professors, leaving the boy alone in front of the Leader of the Church.
"It is a pleasure to finally meet you, Haruki," Rhea said; even her voice sounded divine. "I am Rhea, the Archbishop of the Church of Seiros."
"I… Thank you for having me, Lady Rhea," Haruki fumbled his words, but otherwise greeted and gave her a courteous bow. Despite what he was feeling, he needed to act natural and formal in front of such a significant figure.
"No need to be nervous, dear child. For this is your moment. I am sure you are aware why you have been summoned."
"About my enrollment?" Haruki raised his head.
Rhea nodded and proceeded to glance over to her advisor. On cue Seteth spoke.
"We have reviewed your performance in your Entrance Exam. Your overall results were exemplary and enough to have you enrolled into our esteemed Upper Echelon course. On behalf of Gareg Mach Monastery, we congratulate you for your efforts."
A round of applause among the small group in attendance ensued around him. Even Himari was applauding. But, Haruki didn't think his efforts in the exam were worth the praise. His only thought was to do just enough to get him by. It was nothing special.
However, they were showing a kind gesture, so he knew it was only natural to show appreciation… with but a single nod.
"Wooow, you could at least seem happy about the praise."
"Don't care for it."
"Ugh! Such a 'you' answer."
"What does that mean?"
"Just… forget it. Now, hush! Lady Rhea's not done."
After his small talk with Himari, he turned his attention back to the Archbishop, who indeed was about to speak once more.
"Now that you have passed the Entrance Exam, it is now time to discuss the other matter."
"...Tuition."
Rhea nodded. "Seteth has informed you about our Seiros' Chosen Scholarship that you now qualify for through your performance as well as your valor in protecting those in need. We have given you ample time to think about your decision: Whether to accept the scholarship or decline it… However…"
"...?" Haruki tilted his head as he noticed Lady Rhea glance over to his left. There was but one person to his left… And just knowing that fact, he immediately did not like where this was going.
"Those aren't your only two options," Claude finally spoke.
Stifling a groan, Haruki turned his head toward him, signaling him to explain.
"You heard about the Endorsement Program?"
"…Eh?"
"Allow me," Seteth offered to explain. "As the name implies, the Endorsement Program allows some students to be endorsed by a member of the nobility, allowing them to attend the Officer's Academy with the financial assistance of the noble family that endorsed them, rather than the Church."
"An endorsement?" Haruki furrowed his brow. "Why wasn't this brought up during the meeting?"
"Well, it is mostly due to us offering you the Seiros' Chosen Scholarship. It is a prestigious award that not many receive. Also, in addition to no noble coming forward to endorse you at the time, based on your background and your relationship with noble families aside from work, the discussion was omitted."
"..."
It seemed like a rather ludicrous reason, but Haruki supposed he couldn't deny that. After all, it's true that he very seldom spoke to people from nobility, so it was safe to say he didn't make any connections.
But now…
"Don't tell me…" Haruki looked at the only noble in the room.
"That's right, yours truly wants to endorse you," Claude affirmed gladly.
"...Why?" Haruki narrowed his eye, trying to figure out what the House Leader was plotting. As far as he was concerned, he wasn't doing it out of the goodness of his heart.
"Don't worry. I'm not plotting anything mischievous."
"That doesn't sound very convincing."
"Heh, you may take it however you like, but it's true. My reason goes back to Remire."
"You mean when we saved you."
"That's right. I still don't know why you went out your way for us, but you did anyways, and I want to repay you for that. Besides being mercenaries-for-hire, it's only natural to be paid for a job well done, right?"
"Logically speaking… You're correct. But," Haruki pointed at Seteth. "The Church claimed responsibility. So, in reality, you don't have to pay a bullion because they screwed up."
"Haru…" Byleth scolded him from behind.
"I'm just saying it how it is, By. Mr. Advisor here said so himself."
"Regardless, you must-"
"It's quite alright… Professor," Seteth intervened. "After all, Haruki is correct that we took responsibility. Which is one of the reasons why we are offering this scholarship as a means to pay you for the trouble. However, given that fact, Claude is adamant in offering his endorsement.."
"...Why?" Haruki asked Claude a second time. "I know there's more you want from me."
"You won't let up, huh?" Claude chuckled. "Well I'd be lying if I said I'm only doing this just to repay you. It's definitely a big reason. But on top of that, I've seen what you can do out there. Your skills are valuable. I'd be insane not to try to get you to join my side."
"If that's the case, then why aren't Blaiddyd and Hresvelg doing the same?"
Haruki recalled his talk with Edelgard and how interested she was in wanting to hire him and the company. Dimitri may not have mentioned it, but it was safe to assume he wanted to do the same. And yet, neither the princess nor the prince were present.
"Oh, that's simple: they can't."
"They… can't?"
"Nope, nobles who are able to endorse someone can do so only once a year. Unfortunately for his and her highnesses, they already used their one endorsement. As for me…"
"You haven't endorsed anyone yet."
"Bingo!" Claude snapped his fingers. "When I caught wind of your situation, I couldn't pass the opportunity up."
"Caught wind?" Haruki furrowed his brow. He assumed that only the people within the confines of the Chamber knew about his situation. So how did Claude manage to find out? Haruki talked about it with Byleth just moments before coming here, who heard about it from…
"My old man."
"Yeaaah…" Claude affirmed, scratching the back of his head. "The other day, we bumped into each other, and he kinda let it slip."
"I'm so kicking him in the face the next time I see him."
To think he would go out and share it out to others. And of all the people he'd share it to, It just had to be Claude. Even after he told Jeralt to not get involved.
"Whoa there. no need to get so worked up," Claude tried to calm Haruki down, "Jeralt may have told me about what was going on, but from there, I'm doing this of my own free will."
"Your free will…" he scoffed, but he didn't sense any ill intent in Claude's words. "You're serious about this."
"I am," Claude firmly nodded. "So the question now is… Will you accept my offer?"
Haruki's gaze went down to the floor as he began to think about his options - just when he had his decision made. Although, with Claude's offer, there shouldn't be a reason to pay out his pocket now. The question now is should he accept the Seiros' Chosen Scholarship or Claude's endorsement?
He was now back to square one. Only this time, he didn't have the luxury of time at his side. That being the case, he needed to ask the right questions.
"What's the catch, Reigan?"
"The catch?" Claude confusedly asked.
Haruki pointed at Seteth, again. "Apparently, the scholarship they're offering has a catch where I'm supposed to join the Knights of Seiros after graduation. So, what's your plan with me?"
"Oh, I get it now. Well, I won't offer any kind of commitment like that. You're free to do whatever you want after graduation. Although, don't be surprised if I call you up from time-to-time. Your skills will come in handy with helping the Alliance."
"Hmm…"
Haruki could admit that that was enticing to hear. If anything, such a condition wasn't so different from his mercenary lifestyle. And given that Claude would be offering jobs when available, he wouldn't have to worry about not finding work either.
Indeed, it was a big benefit…
However… he recalled something during the conversation in the Dining Hall.
"But If I accept your endorsement, will that mean I join the Golden Deer?"
"Naturally. The House the endorsing noble resides is where the endorsed student will join."
"..."
Haruki turned his gaze from Claude to the Archbishop.
"Lady Rhea, what are the conditions regarding my House placement should I accept your scholarship?"
"...Should you choose to accept the scholarship, you have liberty to choose which House to join."
"..."
So, Claude and Dimitri were right in that regard. But either way…
These choices.
Claude's endorsement. It does not force him to be in any sort of commitment after graduation. He could do whatever he wanted, go wherever he wanted aside from jobs for the Alliance. There were no strings tied to him… after graduation. The thing was, he would be tied down to the one House he didn't want to be in.
And that was the dilemma...
Because on the other hand. Lady Rhea's scholarship would give him liberty to choose the House he wanted to join, which would mean it was guaranteed that he would be in Byleth's class. It would make life in the academy much easier.
However, should she side with Lady Rhea, that would mean he will have to stay in the Church as part of their knights after graduation with no known way of getting out without deserting like Jeralt did. On the other hand, should he side with Claude, he would be free from the future burden, but he'd be away from the one person he trusted most of all. The only person who knew how to deal with him...
Truly, they were two choices that were not ideal.
"You'll be shackled however you see it," Himari shared in her piece. "But I think you shouldn't be stressed out about it. You remember what your father told you?"
"..."
"If you feel something is off, you should never ignore it."
"You feel off right now, don't you?"
"..."
He truly could not deny it.
This woman in front of him. The Archbishop of the Church of Seiros, Lady Rhea.
There was definitely something off about her.
He knew this the moment he stepped foot inside the room.
The old man had to deal with this much pressure?
Not only that…
"'Be on your guard, especially when around Lady Rhea.' Was this why he gave me that warning?"
"No doubt that's a possibility. We're already catching a glimpse firsthand."
With that being the case, Should he follow the old man's advice, then he must accept Claude's offer.
But…
Will that really be okay? Being separated from his older brother?
He did not question that just because of what had recently transpired. Yes, he was worried about that, but his worries ran deeper than what happened a few nights ago… and this prickling feeling bothering his left arm kept reminding him.
"The last time I trusted my gut-feeling, everything went to hell…"
He told himself to not follow his feelings… it's gotten in so much trouble far too many times to count. He told himself to only see things logically - rationally. In order to not let that day happen again, there was no room for feelings.
"Then, think of this logically, you dummy. Would Jeralt really give you such a warning if it weren't serious?"
"..."
"..."
No… he wouldn't.
For he had dealt with Rhea before.
He dealt with this pressure.
Such immense pressure that may have been the cause of his desertion.
Must he go through the same thing?
…Of course not.
For his nosy old man brought to him an escape. Yet it's an escape that wasn't ideal.
"You're still worried about Byleth aren't you? I'll admit, I can't blame you for that. Of course, you don't want him to be alone. But remember… Sothis is with him."
Haruki looked over his shoulder. Byleth was staring back at him, as well as Sothis floating next to him. The latter nodded at him, as if she knew what he was thinking, reassuring him she will look after his older brother.
"If you're worried about yourself… you're not alone either."
"..."
"It's time to decide."
The Serios chosen scholarship or Claude's endorsement. Haruki must make his choice.
"I'm still concerned about Byleth, but if what you said is true, Sothis will look after him. And from what we know… she's capable of doing that. As for me… I guess you'll have to suffice."
"Hey!"
"I won't follow my gut feeling… but I can at least follow your judgment."
His quiet footsteps echoed in the chamber, as he began to move toward his fate.
He then stopped… in front of the leader of the Golden Deer.
"Reigan," he said, not looking Claude in the eye, but he could feel his surprise. "Just to confirm… I can do whatever I want after graduation, right?"
"…Aside from when you're needed."
"That means I have to deal with your ass for a school year?"
"That's a harsh way to put it… but yeah."
"And there isn't anything you're keeping from me?"
"No, I said all that I needed to say."
"So you're serious about this?"
"I am… are you?"
Haruki took a very deep breath, steeling himself. He then looked at Claude straight in the eye.
"...You better not make me regret this."
He made his decision… And Claude's face lit up brighter than Haruki had seen before.
"Don't worry. I'll make sure you won't," he assured, reaching his hand out for a handshake.
"...Hmph," Haruki snorted, leaving Claude hanging as he turned around to face Lady Rhea. He had figured she'd look shocked just like everyone else in the chamber - not including Byleth, for he rarely shows any hint of emotion. But to Haruki's surprise, her face was just as blank as his brother's.
"So you have chosen the Golden Deer, under the endorsement of Claude von Reigan, correct?" She asked rather flatly.
"Correct," Haruki said, giving off the same energy as she did. "I thank you for your generous offer… But I concluded this is a better option for me."
"I see," she closed her eyes, obviously thinking about something, but it was hard to tell exactly what she could be thinking. After a moment, however, her graceful smile returned as she reopened her eyes. At the same time, all her distorted feelings within her have calmed down significantly.
"Very well, then. If that is what your heart truly desires. From today onward, you are officially a student of the Golden Deer, led by Claude von Reigan and under the tutelage of Professor Hanneman. May the Goddess bless you with the wisdom that will guide you through your time at the Monastery."
"..." Haruki did not say a word but gave Lady Rhea a small bow to show some form of appreciation as everyone else gave one final round of applause.
"That concludes today's meeting," Seteth announced. "Claude, Professor Hannemann, we leave the rest in your capable hands."
"Gladly," The older man approached Haruki and Claude. "A fine pleasure to meet you, young Haruki. I am Hanneman, and I shall be your homeroom professor from here on out. I am very much looking forward to it."
"..."
"Now then, while there are other matters I wish to discuss with you, let us first visit the Golden Deer classroom. Although classes are over for today, it is best to know your way once you begin tomorrow. I am sure all the students will be eager to meet you."
"That's for sure!" Claude chimed in, suddenly wrapping his arm around Haruki's shoulders. "I gave them a rundown about our run-in the other day, but it's definitely going to be quite the shock when they realize you're joining us. Heh, can't wait."
"Touch me again, and you're losing fingers."
Claude immediately retracted his arm after that. Regardless, Haruki supposed it wouldn't be a bad idea to know where to go. However, after glancing over toward his older brother, he knew he had to do something beforehand.
"Take as much time as you need with Professor Byleth," Heneman said, as if he knew what Haruki was thinking. "We shall await you in my office across the hall."
Without as much of a nod, Haruki walked away from Hanneman and Claude and made his way toward Byleth and Sothis. Her smile was a dead giveaway that she expected this outcome and was satisfied with it.
"My, such a very interesting turn of events!" she said "However, I had a hunch this was bound to occur. Did you not feel the same Byleth?"
"Was it father's advice?" he asked.
"..." the boy did not say a word. Instead, he looked over his shoulder.
"Let's find a place more private," Himari suggested, staring at who Haruki was looking at. "And away from this pressure on us."
Byleth glanced over as well and saw the Archbishop attentively staring at Haruki. Then, he looked at his younger brother carrying a more disgruntled look than usual.
Understanding the situation, Byleth nodded then spoke to Lady Rhea. "We shall take our leave Lady Rhea. If you excuse us."
"...Yes. I expect great things Professor. And you as well… Haruki Eisner."
Byleth gave her a bow and Haruki curtly follow suit. Then, Byleth led Haruki and Himari out of the Audience Chamber - away from the Archbishop.
Not far from the chamber was Jeralt's office. He gave Byleth a spare key in case he ever needed to use it. Who would have thought he would be using it so soon?
As they entered the office, Haruki remained quiet as he sat down on the couch. He sneaked a few glances at the door, his cautious nature showing.
"Don't worry," Byleth took a seat on the couch parallel to Haruki's. "No one should have need in Father's office anytime soon. It'll give us time to talk."
"Then I'm just going to ask." Haruki turned his attention to Byleth. "Did you know?"
"About Claude's endorsement?"
Haruki nodded. "I assumed you would, since you had a chance to talk to the old man."
"I see. I suppose it's understandable to assume that… However, that wasn't the case."
"Really?" Haruki asked, looking genuinely surprised to hear his assumption was wrong. He then looked up at Sothis who was resting on her hands on top of Byleth's head.
"Not a peep," she said. "He only spoke about your little issue. This brother of yours offered to help, but your father simply said that there was nothing to worry about."
Byleth nodded in agreement. "I couldn't have guessed he'd actually speak to a noble - a House Leader, no less."
"So, you were in the dark about the old man's bullshit scheme, too?"
"I would have told you about it, otherwise."
"Yeah, you're right…" Haruki slouched back onto the couch. "But why does he have to be secretive about it?"
"Likely because you'd try to stop him if you found out"
"...Maybe."
"We should've expected this, honestly," Himari next to Haruki chimed in. "He's just that kind of person, it seems."
"And this is where it led to: joining the Golden Deer under Reigan of all people… honestly, talk about a twisted joke."
"You know, you could have just gone along with the original plan and joined the Church."
"Tsk… that was because it was the best option before all this. I'm in no mood to be a Church's dog if I could help it."
"So, You followed Father's warning, after all."
Jeralt had warned them about the Archbishop. He had yet to understand why his father was on guard when it came to her. However, he had his reasons, surely, and it seemed Haruki was already taking the initiative of removing himself as much as he could from her.
"As much as I hate to admit it, the old man's idea is logical… even if it means we'll be apart for a while."
"And you're okay with that?"
"Of course not. I hate it, honestly. But I rather not take the chance."
"Too, true," Himari nodded in agreement. "She's honestly scary."
"Scary?" Sothis tilted her head. "Do tell, Himari. While I do agree she is ominous, what makes you think so too."
"Her aura…"
"Aura?"
"With Haruki's abnormal sensitivity, and me being connected with him, we got a whiff of her aura. And let me tell you, it was all over the place. I can't even make heads or tails of it. But what thing is certain though…"
"She's undeniably powerful," Haruki finished Himari's sentence, "in more ways than one."
"I see. So that is how you came to your decision." Sothis nodded. "I can only imagine the power you must have felt."
"It's best that you don't."
"Oh?" She smiled mischievously. "Are you worried about me? Is there actually kindness in that cold heart of yours."
"I'm not being nice, nor am I worried. I'm just saying it how it is?
"Ohhh? I do wonder how much of that is true."
"..."
"Hehe, as much I want to see you continue annoying the guy, let's get back to the topic at hand." Himari said. "Specifically, let's look at the bigger picture here."
"I agree." Byleth said. "We'll need to adjust our plan of action.
"Our goal hasn't changed, and that's to find information. This situation will actually play in our favor if we were to split up like this.
Both Byleth and Haruki agreed on that. It is already determined that they were going to be in different houses and go on separate missions. Since that was the case, it would be advantageous for them; they would be able to gather more information faster if they were to be in two places at once.
"An wonderful thought, dearest Himari. Branching out like this, then reconvening when we find something of interest… A year doing that will do wonders.
"Uh-Huh! And this would be a great opportunity to take this year to branch out and make new friends, Haruki!
"..."
"No?"
"No…"
"Hmph! Antisocial jerk."
"Speaking of a year being here," Haruki ignored his companion to continue his conversation with Byleth. "How long is your contract?"
"It'll last the school year, too."
"Hm… will you be alright?
"Will you? You understand that I won't always be there. We'll be in different houses who'll go on separate missions."
"I know," Haruki nodded as he gripped his left arm. "It has been three years now. One more shouldn't be an issue.
"... I hope so, Haru." Byleth said before looking at Himari. "I shall leave him in your hands."
"You got it!" Himari gave him a confident thumbs up.
"That still doesn't make me feel any better," Haruki shook his head before giving Sothis a knowing look.
"Do not worry, Haruki," Sothis nodded to him. "Byleth will be under my care."
"Well that's the best we'll do, then," Haruki responded with a sigh.
"Yes," Byleth agreed. "We'll carry on our duties, as well as gathering any relevant information. Are we all in agreement, then?"
In unison, everyone in the room nodded in agreement.
"Well, I guess that's how things are. Whatever happens, happens. Right, Haruki?"
"Whatever happens, happens, huh…? I guess so."
"I know so… well, we shouldn't keep Claude and Professor Hanneman waiting. Let's get going! Our journey begins now!
"Before that."
"Aww. What is it now?!"
"One last little business."
He must of sensed him coming, because when the door opened, it was none other than Jeralt who entered the office.
"Byleth? Haru?"
"Old man. Impeccable timing."
"Impeccable timing? What's going on?"
Without a word Haruki sat up from the couch and motioned Jeralt to come take a seat where he was at.
Raising a brow, obviously confused about what was happening, Jeralt obliged and took a seat.
"Aright kid? Now will you fill me in?"
"Hmmm…"
Haruki did not respond to him. Instead, he looked around the room until he laid an eye on the armor mannequins.
"Haru?"
"..."
Again, he did not respond. He then walked towards the mannequins, specifically the one with a shield.
"Good grief," Jeralt shook his head before turning his attention to Byleth. "Mind if you tell me?"
"Our meeting with Lady Rhea concluded a short while ago," the professor answered.
"I see," Jeralt glowered the moment he heard the Archbishop's name. "So, how'd it go?"
"Good, all things considered. However, Claude's inclusion was unexpected."
"Ah, so that noble brat actually went for it."
"Yes. It was quite the shock for the both of us."
"Well, it was a sudden idea that came down to pure chance. Sorry to keep you in the dark, Byleth."
"It isn't me you should apologize to."
Soon after Byleth said that, Haruki returned. He gave Jeralt the shield he just picked off the mannequin before taking a few steps back.
"Oh, boy," Himari, sitting next to Jeralt this whole time, stood up from the couch, catching on to what was about to happen.
"Uh… what are you… oh," Jeralt finally caught on as well - just a little too late, however.
Haruki let out a single deep breath, before pivoting on his left foot and delivering a powerful side-kick aimed toward Jeralt's head. Still having his hand on the shield, Jeralt raised it in front of his face, hoping to nullify the oncoming attack. Putting it up in time, the sole of Haruki's boot made contact with the shield. Even though he blocked the attack, it was powerful enough to send him and the couch skidding back and hitting the book shelf behind him, knocking down a few books. The impact also caused a shockwave that rattled the room, especially the window and armor mannequins.
"Oh, my," Sothis said, quite mesmerized by what she witnessed. "Is… this brother of yours usually like this."
"Yes," Byleth answered immediately, unfazed about what had just transpired, as did Himari who had such a deadpan look that rivaled the professor's.
"Hm, leg's all healed up," Haruki put down his foot and made his way toward the door. "Later, old man. Next time you keep shit from us, I won't give you a shield."
Saying his final piece, Haruki left the room.
"Urgh… I should've seen something coming," Jeralt lowered the shield, obviously still rather shaken by the impact. "But could he least be more calm about this!"
"That was the calmest he was going to get," Byleth said.
If anything, Haruki would not have given Jeralt the light of day to prepare for the kick, nor would he have given him something to block the impact.
"Kicking me without a heads-up doesn't sound 'calm' to me." Jeralt inspected his shield. Sure enough, Haruki's kick left a good dent on it. Those kicks of his were terrifying. "Well I take it that things didn't go as planned?"
"Actually, it was the opposite."
"Huh?" Jeralt's eyes widened hearing that. "Haru actually accepted that noble brat's endorsement?
Byleth nodded. "It should not have come as a surprise. It was your idea, and Haruki simply followed the logic behind it."
"Then if that's the case, what's the point of kicking me?"
"Because you were keeping quiet from us… again."
"...Fair enough, I supposed," Jeralt said before breathing a deep sigh of relief with a faint smile across his face. Perhaps knowing that Haruki won't be as involved with Lady Rhea put his mind at ease.
"Hey," Jeralt glowered again. "You think he'll be alright?"
"..."
Byleth questioned the same thing. This would be the first time in a while that they were separated like this. There's no denying that he was concerned that something would happen. Yet, even if this was influenced by Jeralt, this was the path Haruki decided to take. After all…
"Haru isn't weak. He'll be fine."
"Heh," Jeralt snorted, his smile returning. "You're right. The kid's tougher than he looks… But are you alright with this?"
"I'll admit, I have my concerns, but I'll trust in your judgment."
"...Thanks kid."
"Hey," Sothis called to the professor. "As much as I love the father and son bonding. We have much to do."
With a nod Byleth stood up from the couch. "I shall take my leave now. I need to prepare my students."
"Heh, look at you sounding like a true professor. How's that going for you?"
"I've only just begun, so I'm not sure."
"I see. Well just holler if you need anything from me, okay?"
"Of course."
"And good luck getting ready for the mock battle."
"...Thank you."
With that, Byleth left the room and made his way to his personal quarters.
"Hmm, the mock battle." Sothis mused as she floated next to him. "That is in one week's time. Have you decided who you'll choose?"
"Not yet."
"I see… does that mean another sparing session is in order?"
"Yes."
"You've gave then quite the thrashing the last time."
"It was to test their abilities."
"You could have at least gone easy on them."
"..."
"Well, it's fine. They'll need to learn, somehow. I trust you'll make the right choice on who to pick for the mock battle. Especially now."
Sothis was right. Byleth will have to better prepare his students and decide who will be the best choices to ensure victory for the Black Eagles. It was a tall order…
Especially now that it would be all but certain that Haruki will be among his opponents.
AN
Hello good people!
As you can see, I'm still kicking, and I'm finally back.
First and foremost, I do apologize for such a long hiatus. Let's just say life really do got hands, for better and worse.
There were times when I just didn't have time, and there other times when my motivation wasn't there. But even after all that, this little project of mine was something I couldn't give up on.
so now I bring you this chapter... and oh boy, Haruki is in for a whacky time with the Golden Deer. Next chapter - which is actually almost done - we'll see Haruki meet his new classmates!
On another note, you may have noticed Himari's and Sothis' dialogue are not bolded. After some feedback from here, as well as some friends, I am testing this different format when it comes there dialogue.
Do let me know what you think, whether you prefer this way or the original way. And of course, any and all other feedback is appreciated.
Again, thank you for reading and your patience with me. I'll see you all in the next chapter!
