...

The sun spilled in past the sheer curtains in Jane's bedroom, landing on Jane and Maura cuddled up in bed. Jane's arm was wrapped around Maura's waist, pulling her close. Jane breathed in Maura's hair as she stirred. She wanted to wake up slowly, savor every moment spent cuddled with Maura, but the loud knocking on her door caused her to change her plans.

"Jane!" She heard through the knocking. Jane's eyes shot open wide once she realized that it was her mother who was knocking incessantly on her door.

She shook Maura awake. "Maur, wake up."

Maura sighed and turned over to look at Jane. "Hey," she said, voice groggy with sleep.

"Get up. My mother is here." Jane's voice was filled with panic and it caused Maura's brows to furrow.

"What?" Maura asked, but then she heard the banging and Angela calling again for Jane to open the door.

Jane was scrambling out of bed now, searching the floor for her panties and shirt. Where had Maura tossed those? They had come home last night in a flurry of lips and hands. They had been too close when a life was cut short and couldn't, wouldn't, waste any more time. So of course clothes were hastily stripped and flung around the room in their desperate need to touch other. Which was all fine and dandy at the time, but right now Jane need underwear.

"Aha!" Jane cried and she finally located her missing undergarments under the dresser. She slipped them on and pulled a clean shirt and pants from the drawer, giving up the search for the ones she had on last night. Maura sat in the bed and watched, one hand pushing her hair back from her face. "I'm gonna go see what she wants. You get dressed," Jane instructed as she made her way to the front door.

Angela was still banging on the door and shouting Jane's name when Jane finally opened it.

"Took you long enough," Angela said as she pushed her way in side.

"Sorry, Ma, I was sleeping."

"I just wanted to check on you."

"I'm fine. I should be the one checking on you."

Angela moved into the kitchen and took stock of the mess. Jane wasn't a particularly messy person, but she definitely didn't live up to the Italian definition of clean. Angela grabbed a sponge and began cleaning.

"30 years I've been picking up that man's socks. Cooking without spices because it gave him indigestion."

"I know, Ma." Jane stood at the counter and watched her mother for a moment. Then she said, "I heard you were selling the house."

"Yes, thanks to your father."

"What happened?"

"He left me. He left me with nothing. I gave him my best years."

"Okay, come on. You have plenty of good years left. All right?" Angela scoffed at that, but Jane continued. "And you got me, you got Frankie, you got Tommy."

"Tommy who's in prison?"

"He's getting out soon, Ma. He's been writing me letters. He's doing really good." Jane sighed and then asked the question she'd been dying to the answer to since yesterday. "Why didn't daddy come to the ceremony?"

Angela put down the sponge and looked Jane in the eye. "I asked him not to. Because I didn't want you to have to arrest me if he did."

"Why? What did he do?"

"Jane, he... He wants a change. I want a change, too. But you don't see me walking out on him."

"You can stay here as long as you like. You can... you can have my bedroom."

Angela shook her head. "Not gonna impose. I can't. Besides, uh, Dr. Isles offered me her guest house."

"What?" Jane asked in disbelief.

Minutes later Jane was waltzing into her bedroom. She was able to successfully get rid of her mother with a promise to call and check on her later.

"Is everything okay with Angela?" Maura asked as Jane walked in. She was sitting on the edge of the bed reading an article on her phone.

"Are you a masochist?"

"I'm sorry?"

"You bought this house for your mother to visit, not mine."

"Oh, Jane. I meant to tell you last night."

"Why are you doing this?"

"Because she's your family."

Jane moved to sit down next to Maura. "Okay, that is actually very sweet. But you didn't have to do that."

"I know that I didn't. I wanted to. I love you and I love Angela. I hate that she is going through this. I have the means to help, so I offered. But, I realize that I should have asked you how you felt about it first. I'm sorry I didn't."

Jane kissed the top of Maura's head. "I guess I'm not really mad. Not now that you explained it. But you do know this means that we have to be sneaky about this when we're at your place. My mother loves to just barge in if and when she can."

Maura laughed. "Okay." She pressed her lips firmly against Jane's. "Come on, get dressed. We have a murder to solve."
