A/N: Sorry for the delay. The muse is lazy, with all mistakes and typos courtesy of me, lol. The big reveal, reminder: it's slow burn, so don't get excited just yet
Lifting weights at the FBI Academy gym early Friday morning, Jane went over the monologue of what she planned to say to Maura to convince her to move to DC. Her life in DC was definitely simpler, calmer, and more normal. Jane was happy in a different way, mostly because she wasn't plagued by the dangers of her job or the dangers of her loved ones being pulled into the dangers of her job by association. If she could improve what her life was like right now, it would be to have Maura by her side. After her call with her mother the other day, she had wondered Maura's point of view on how that was perceived. She was pretty convinced that Maura would also agree with her that they had just been friends and not in a relationship like her mother was implying. After that talk, though, Jane's subconscious bubbled up the thought of what that would mean.
Jane was startled by the revelations of how she interpreted how her body felt while having the dream in which Maura seemed to be seductively teasing and licking along her neck. Surely it was natural to be aroused and for her body to react that way to any stimulation in erogenous zones. That couldn't only be it though, because if Jane was being honest, no one else -not even Casey, evoked how her heart felt, how her skin felt, and how her mind was affected in that dream. Though it could just be that she wasn't very open to knowing herself in the arena of sexuality. Maura probably was since she was always unabashed with discussions about it, but Jane was very conservative when it came to talking about things like sex. She just was pretty embarrassed about talking about things like that in public. It always made her blush, but maybe it was for different reasons when it came to Maura if she were to think on it. Satisfied that she had thoughts to work on she focused on the goal at hand.
Tonight, she would have her talk with Maura to convince her to move to somewhere near her. Would it be a hard sell? Of course, it would be, but she hoped what programs she found would be enough. Although the VA hospital plan next to her didn't pan out, Jane had through researching, found out that the one of the top neonatology clinics in the country was in Children's National hospital in Washington DC which was less than an hour drive away. If she could appeal to Maura's need to have the best knowledge, she was sure to win out. It might be a hard sell to try to leave Hope's clinic and connections and that ability to bond with her biological mother- but she still could delay the move. "Who am I kidding, Maura just now got a family. Her biological Mother and a sister. how could I possibly be more appealing to Maura to leave everything behind." She racked her weights back up and cleaned off the weight bench. She needed to prepare her hard to sell points otherwise she would not be able to win her over.
Constance Isles had rearranged her Isles Foundation meetings in favor of ensuring she would be in Boston for Maura's reveal to Jane. To be sure, Constance was worried about the outcome of it all, but she felt that in the last years that she had known Maura, she was blooming as a person, and she felt that was partially due to having Jane in her life. She felt this was one of her daughter's biggest moments and life and she needed to be there to support her no matter the outcome. Constance knew that Angela and Hope would be more than willing and happy to support Maura, but Constance was honored to be asked instead and would not let her daughter down for once in her life. After her life-or-death situation where she was hit a car, she truly saw how much she missed out being a part of Maura's life and how important she was in her life. She wanted to teach Maura how to be independent, but she realized that Maura had that in spades and what she really needed was to belong and have somebody to be a part of a family with, a family that did things together and valued each other and wanted to spend time with one another. That is what Constance aimed to provide her adopted daughter for the remainder of her life and that was her goal after getting a second chance at life.
She had arrived on a redeye and a car took her to Maura's where she was now having dinner with Maura and both of them were waiting in anticipation with her call with Jane.
"Have you decided the best way to tell her?" The older woman broached the subject as she sipped at the Bordeaux that Maura had set to breath after dinner. "The meal and wine are lovely by the way." Constance complimented.
They had just finished a meal that Constance had ordered from a local French restaurant for delivery. She knew Maura wouldn't have much time for making a meal or going out for a meal before the call so she informed Maura of her plans and Maura was appreciative and had the perfect wine to pair with it.
"No, I was hoping to start with the fact that I missed her and that things were just not the same without her in my life." Maura remarked, setting her own wine glass down. "I've never been with friends with someone before dating them. It's a different scenario that I don't have any previous learning experience and I did try to do some research on how to go about it, but I think its best that I let it transition organically."
"That's a reasonable assumption." Maura glanced over at the clock and saw that it was 730pm. She wanted to set up her office laptop and fix her hair a few minutes before the call. After dinner conversation with her mother was a welcome distraction. Her anxiety was ratcheting up the closer it got. There really was nothing to lose. Jane was miles away in her own life now, the only consequences would be if Jane came home to visit, and Maura would be able to just avoid her or be absent for those visits.
A knock on the back door interrupted her thoughts. Angela knew it was Constance coming in, as she had just returned from work. She quickly tidied herself up before greeting her. Constance was a bit of an intimidating woman, but much more approachable since her hit-and-run incident. Angela felt that Constance truly cared for Maura, and she loved Maura like her own child. Even though Constance remained aloof and cold, eventually Angela would have had to step in, much like Jane did. Luckily, Jane, their daughter, was already ahead of the curve and very protective of Maura, so Angela never had to.
Maura stood up and made her way to the back kitchen door and made space for Angela to enter. Kissing Maura on her cheek as she greeted her on the way in, she made her way to the dining table to also greet the older Isles. "Angela, if you would excuse me, I'll be in my office, I have an in person call with Jane shortly. Please make yourself at home and keep mother company." With that, she hustled toward the office.
"Connie, you look amazing as always. Good to see you, and I'm glad you are here with Maura. She's been a bit down in the dumps lately. I'd have stopped by earlier, but I've been cooking up my next business ideas." Angela bustled to the refined Isles matriarch and bent down towards her seated at the dining table and gave her a small hug.
"How was your flight in?" the Rizzoli matriarch questioned.
"It was quite alright, best as one can hope in this season Angela. How how have you been?" Constance replied with a smile.
"Busy, Busy as a bee. With Jane gone, I can't dote on her and your busy bee," she pointed toward the office where Maura was preparing, "has also been fully busy. This is probably the first time I've spent with her in months. Did she get a case?" Angela motioned with her thumb towards Maura's office.
"Oh, well its rather complicated but my daughter has come to terms with some important things lately. One of which is that she is in love with your daughter."
Unflinching Angela answered with an relieved "Finally!" She huffed and pulled up a chair. "I've suspected those two have had something special for a long time I can't believe its taken them ages to put two and two by themselves."
"You were not alone on that one. I have thought that all this time, they were together, and Maura was just keeping it under wraps for those with lesser sensibilities. All is well now, though dear Angela, as Maura has made up her mind now that she has realized some things to tell her." Constance revealed proud that her daughter would make the first move.
"What? Caspita!" Angela ran full speed to Maura's office and did a quick knock on Maura's door. Constance was confused at the response but saw the urgency on Angela's face and let the Italian woman continue to her daughter's office.
Maura had adjusted her clothing and her hair in the mirror, refreshing some of her makeup. She was preparing various ways to reveal her feelings for Jane, rehearsing them in her head, feeling them out. She booted up her laptop and signed in next opening up her video camera in a flattering angle and started her call. It was now or never!
The room opened and she fixed her hair while watching the screen. Jane wasn't quite in yet so she took this time to speak aloud. "Jane, I have feelings for you." she recited.
A knock on the door interrupted her thoughts. "Come in?" she asked questioningly. The door cracked open, and Angela poked her head through the door and gestured wildly to Maura. She moved her palm down with the universal gesture of slice across her neck, motioning Maura to stop?
"What is it Angela?" Maura asked just as Jane appeared on the call.
The curly head Rizzoli graced the screen with a huge smile. "Long time no see Maur! How would you feel about moving out here with me?" Jane asked excitedly.
Maura glanced from Angela to Jane, torn between excited to see and shocked what Jane had just asked and concerned what Angela had to say. Angela pantomimed an X with her arms and mouthed the word 'don't' anxiously. Maura was quite confused at Angela's actions, and they took precedent.
"Jane, just give me a moment there is someone at the door." Not quite a lie but also not the whole truth.
"Oh sure, Maura, go ahead. I'll be right here." Jane squirmed in her seat, ready to fire rapid fire shots of all her research.
Standing Maura muted the call and left Jane staring at her office bookcase.
"Angela! What's wrong?" Maura hurriedly asked both relieved and impatient to tell Jane what she had meant to go on the call for.
"Maura I love you, as a daughter but you mustn't tell Janie you are in love with her! She will panic and bolt. Believe you me. I've never met someone so out of touch with her feelings!"
Constance, who followed shortly after Angela, heard the commotion followed and overheard the comment. "Angela, isn't honesty the best policy? Isn't giving Jane the full information a way to allow her to make a choice on her own, be it fight or flight and closure for Maura as well."
Maura looked to both of her adoptive mothers, torn between their points and now undecided on which path to take.
Unbeknownst to the ladies in the Isles household, Jane could hear her mother's panicked voice, and Jane's eyes widened like saucers.
