As the 'OUTATIME' number plate spins around on the screen, and Cassie nestles her head further into my neck, I can't stop thinking about if I made the right decision earlier. Despite Cassie's assurances that she's okay with not doing anything, and her cheerful demeanour as we settled into the familiar routine of watching Back to the Future, I'm still questioning it. Her family are still, by my own estimate, 45 minutes away giving us enough time to do whatever she wants. I look down at her, her eyes glued to her TV as they put the plutonium in. She looks so beautiful in this light, lying down on me. I can't believe I missed two months of this. But, if it means I suddenly have powers, then I can forgive her for that. My thoughts start to veer away from the movie and what we could've been up to had I not decided to be a stick in the mud about it. I involuntarily smirk as Cassie looks up at me.
'What are you smirking about?' she asks playfully.
'Nothing' I say quickly as the smirk wipes itself off my face and I glue my eyes back onto the TV.
Nothing? Really?
Yeah, honest.
I try and displace the thoughts I'd been having, but that only makes them stick louder in my mind. 'Go away' I think to myself.
Go away what?
Nothing.
I'm starting to get nervous, and Cassie isn't backing down.
What you're thinking about right now isn't nothing.
Shit, I've been caught. Cassie gets up to pause the movie and slinks back to me.
'Interesting head you've got there' she says.
'What?' I ask flustered.
'Interesting thoughts' she repeats, smiling. 'In that head of yours.'
I pause for a moment, deciding what course of action to take. I can play it off as no big deal, admit and concede that I wanna be doing that right now, or just lie and say she's wrong. I decide to go with the middle option.
'Look' I say, grabbing her hand. 'I'm starting to think that maybe I made the wrong decision earlier and I could be persuaded to…'
My sentence is ended for me as Cassie starts to kiss me again, as passionately as she did earlier. My head starts to race again, unused to there not being electricity between us as we embrace like this. We twist and turn on the bed as we continue to kiss. The same hunger and sheer passion is there in her eyes from earlier as the rooms temperature starts to increase again. Another moment of clarity hits me, and I pull apart from her, just for a moment.
'Do you have…' I begin to ask.
'Already got one' she says and pulls one out from the drawer next to her bed.
'You come prepared' I say. She shrugs and moves back to me.
'What about the noise?' I ask as she looks at me with raised eyebrows.
'You certainly think a lot of yourself' she replies. 'I've got that covered.' She mutters something under her breath, waves her left hand and a small hum traverses through the room. 'There, no one should hear us now.'
'Perfect' I say, and our embrace resumes.
The temperature continues to rise as I start to take my clothes off and she does likewise. What a first day back together…
Boston, MA
'Goodbye Uncle M' Lena says and puts the phone down.
'So, he's gonna catch up with Marian and see what they can find together' I summarise.
'That's basically it' she says. 'Don't forget he's going over to Claxton tonight as well. We can talk to Liv while we wait, I hear Oxford has quite the collection of Caster books available 24/7, 365.'
'That'd be handy here' I say. 'That holiday rule is a bit of a scam to be honest.'
'You don't say' she says. I remember back to when it would have come on handy if we could have used the Lunae Libri every day before Lena's 16th birthday. I move forward and kiss her. She kisses me back, but then pushes me off after a few seconds.
'Why don't we go too?' she asks excitedly.
'To Claxton?' I question. 'With Macon?'
'No, I mean tomorrow' she replies. 'We're the ones that can hear them, and it'll give me a chance to see someone who I haven't seen in years. And to get a better understanding. Neither of us have classes again until Thursday, which is three days away. We'll be back before you know it.'
'I'm down' I say.
Road trip!
'Oh no' I counter aloud. 'Doing it once was enough to make me never want to do it again. We're not driving all that way.'
'Flying?' she says rather disgusted. 'You know how bad that is for the environment right.'
'Not flying' I say smirking. 'Travelling.'
'You can't be serious,' she says, looking downcast. 'Link can't even Travel himself properly, what makes you think he can get all three of us, and Ridley by the way, there in one piece.'
'Well, if you get on Liv and get her over here with John, that won't be such a problem will it?' I say back.
'That's actually not a bad idea' she replies looking amused.
'What do you mean actually, how dare you' I say mocking hurt.
'Just get Link here' she says and starts to dial Liv's number on WhatsApp.
I go to do the same for Link when I suddenly feel a very inappropriate thought that isn't mine creep into my head. I look over at Lena who's looking back at me with an extremely confused look on her face. I try and get the thought away, but it sticks in my head like a bug that won't go away. I try not to laugh as Lena comes back over to me looking more confused still.
'What the hell was that?' I ask.
'That wasn't me, and I know it wasn't you, right' she says, her hair starting to move.
'Yes it wasn't me' I say.
'Good' she says and her hair stops moving. 'That means it must have been…'
'Josh and Cassie' I say, looking a little repulsed.
'Nice' Lena says annoyed. 'Nothing like having THAT image of your cousin in your head.'
'How would you even…' I begin to ask.
'Don't go there!' Lena says sharply. 'We're going to Claxton tomorrow, so get Link on board and I'll deal with Liv.'
I start to dial Link, trying my best to not think about what I had just seen. Seriously though, how would you even go about doing that…
Claxton, GA
I lie there, sweat pouring off me as I hear the toilet flush and Cassie walk back in quietly. She smiles at me standing in her top and underwear before lying down next to me. She puts her arm around me and looks up at me, still smiling.
'That was amazing' she says. 'It felt so good.'
I look down at her and give a tired smirk. 'You said it enough times.'
She elbows me softly in the ribs.
'Hey' I protest. 'What was that for?'
'That' she says and gets up to put the movie back whilst retrieving the remainder of her clothes, to which I also protest.
'Get yours back on too' she says. 'They'll be here soon.'
'Okay fine' I say. 'Can I have a shower first though? I'm sweating like hell here.'
'Yes, yes but be quick' she replies. 'Use my shampoo and body wash.'
I nod at her and go to have a shower. 10 minutes later, I feel revitalised and ready to meet her family, again. I decide, out of decency, to get dressed in the bathroom. When I walk back into her room, she's fully dressed and looks exactly the same she did an hour ago. I decide to try something.
Shall we continue with the movie?
Let's do it.
I go back to her bed as she turns the movie on again. We resume from the point we stopped it at, as Marty heads back into 1955, her head on my shoulder, just like it was before. I don't really pay attention to the movie again as my mind wonders back to the memories I had received earlier. I hadn't given myself a chance to go through them properly, or to even evaluate what I had been through. There had been so much revealed to me, in such a short space of time. I go back through the catalogue of memories, reminding myself of everything me and Cassie had done together.
After a few minutes of doing this while the film was in, Wilbur suddenly bursts in.
'Cassie' he says angrily. 'I've been calling you for close to ten minutes.'
'Sorry Uncle' she says dejected. 'We'll be down in a minute.'
'You'd better be' he says and shuts the door loudly.
'Guess I forgot to undo the noise charm' she says and smiles a cheeky grin.
'You think' I say and laugh. 'Undo it now for good measure.'
She waves her hand and all of a sudden, the vacuum of noise that was the bedroom is opened up to the world and I hear a large congregation of voices accompanied by movement emanating from downstairs.
Family's here.
Time to face the music.
I open the door for her, and we head downstairs to see them.
As we go downstairs, I see a group of people sitting down in the front room that was a fair few sizes bigger than I remember it being. It is a Caster house though so not that surprising. The people in it on the other hand, that's the strange part.
Hey, they're my family you know.
I know, but I'm a Mortal, or was. You know what I mean.
She ignores me and we continue down till we reach the bottom. I observe fully the seven people I can count in the room. There was Wilbur and alongside him, a woman who looked equal in age to him. A much older woman who looked about 85 with shrivelled skin to match. Alongside them were two younger people, one man and woman who looked alike, probably twins. And in the corner there was a young girl, no more than ten years old playing with a doll. I vaguely recognised all of these people as part of Cassie's family. They were all dressed fairly congruently, however there was a man who looked very out of place. He was dressed immaculately, and had the air of a sophisticated Southern gentleman, straight out of the 1950's. He had piercing green eyes, which seemed to see you no matter where you stood.
Who's that?
I'm not actually sure but he looks familiar.
We move off the stairs and Cassie is embraced by members of her family. Some of them gaze at me before greeting me. I return the gesture, as a proper boy should, and compliment them.
That should get me in good stead.
You already are.
She smiles at me as we continue saying hello to everyone. After greeting the twins, we get to the mysterious man. He extends his hand and speaks with a thick Southern drawl.
'Salutations' he says. 'My name is Macon Ravenwood, and I believe you used to know my niece, Lena Duchannes.'
'You're the mysterious uncle of Lena's I remember' Cassie says with a smile on her face as she shakes his hand. I do likewise and, as I do, he stares intently at me.
It makes me somewhat unsettled, but I have a feeling there's a purpose to his staring, so I put it to the back of my mind. We move through the people and take a seat on a small, two-person sofa. Macon is still looking at me, but this time with an almost amused look on his face. He must know something I don't. As everyone else gets settled down, Wilbur turns to face everyone and stands up.
'I'm sorry for dragging you all down here on such short notice, however this matter couldn't wait. As I described to you all, Cassie took it upon herself to restore Joshua here's memory. Now, without the proper explanation this may seem foolhardy and not a good course of action.'
I roll my eyes at this.
'I couldn't give that explanation earlier on, but Cassie can, so now I will give my niece an opportunity to tell you all what the situation is. Cassie?'
Cassie stands up nervously and gives a small wave. Macon sits forward with intrigue as she speaks. 'Yes, it is true that I have restored Josh's memory and brought him back to me. When I started school again today, from the moment I saw Josh, I could tell there was something wrong. It was the first time since…' She pauses. I squeeze her hand, urging her to continue. 'Since we erased everyone's memory, including his. I wasn't anticipating such a strong reaction from him. When we sat next to each other, it was like all the memories were on the brink of coming out, but he just couldn't access them. He showed at once an affinity for me, and even offered to sit with me and guide me around the school. Eventually, when I did sit next to him, it happened. He saw the orange in my eyes and experienced the elemental visions.'
A few gasps erupt from the family. They clearly understood what that meant. Cassie continued. 'After school, I decided to make sure of it, so I took him to the Fire.'
Macon's ears pricked up like a wolf. 'He was fine. No dizziness, no disorientation. Nothing. That can only mean one thing.'
'He has power' Macon says. 'And from what I can feel, a lot of it.'
'I agree' the elderly woman says. 'However misguided your original reasoning young lady, it would have been a necessary step anyway. You did a good thing child.'
'Thank you Nana' Cassie says to her grandmother.
'But what power?' Wilbur's sister asks. 'How do we find out?'
'We must perform a Discovery ritual' the old woman says. 'And quickly.'
'I concur Dorothea' says Macon. 'Firstly, though, what about their Kelting ability?'
'Kelting?' Dorothea questions. 'You can do that?'
Cassie momentarily ignores her grandmother and stares at Macon. 'How?'
'My niece and her partner have been hearing you Kelt' he responds.
'Really?' I ask, shocked. 'But how, we haven't heard them.'
'That's what I'm here to find out' he says. 'And I'm hopeful that the revealing from the Discovery ritual will illuminate that for me.'
'What are we waiting for then?' I say excitedly. 'Let's find out what power I have.'
