The Annihilator visited often. She refused to call her 'Saviour 'the common folk had taken up calling that damned woman. The Annihilator had rekindled their sun. She had failed to. She had swallowed her pride, thrown away her dignity, and surrendered her weapons for her people.
She was not worthy to be Supremor but her successor? Unwortheir still. She needed to hold on to power till someone worthy came along. She had a few brave warriors in mind but they needed to be molded, they were weak. Easy prey to the cowardly strength of her adversaries.
Her disdain for Annihilator was not a secret. Her adversaries had maneuvered to use it against her. They had riled the planet till they were demanding official recognition of the Annihilator. The highest military award; To a woman who had betrayed them, to a woman who had killed Kree and sank them into a civil war whose scares will outlast all of them.
They had planned for her to be prideful, to let her personal dislike of the Annihilator cloud her judgment to reject a popular demand and doom herself to commonfolk cheering her execution after the coup. The planet was not descending into chaos and war again, not on her watch.
Dar-Benn sent a message to the Annihilator, demanding her presence at the earliest. It took her a week to visit the planet. Slights that she had to ignore.
"Annihilator, The People of Hala and the Kree Empire have, for your service to the empire awarded you the Medal of Bravery, The Kree people will forever be in your debt."
The Annihilator looked confused. " I don't want it."
Dar-Benn realized the true deviousness of the ploy placed before her. The Annihilator in all her insincere humbleness would not accept it but it would be blamed on her. She needed to convince her.
For a woman who had ended more Kree lives than could be ever tallied, The Annihilator felt guilt. Dar-Benn found it pathetic, The Kree were soldiers, They did not need their murders to spill tears for them. They would much rather have her remember them as brave soldiers willing to die for their country.
" This is not a decision I made, Annihilator. I loathe your presence on my planet but this was decided by the people of this planet. The fathers and mothers of the soldiers you killed, their children, their husbands and wives. They are awarding our greatest honor to you and yet you reject it. Do you not understand the generosity of my people or worse, you judge it to be worthless."
The Annihilator seemed moved, how was the most dangerous woman in the universe an emotional fool? The annihilator looked at her.
" I have one condition." She said.
" A condition?" She asked, not bothering to hide her irritation with the traitor.
" I want you to stop calling me that nickname. My name Is Carol, Carol Danvers. If you cannot stomach calling me my first name. You can call me Davers. You are the only one who calls me that and I can't even begin to tell you how much I hate that nickname. I like visiting the planet, I like making amends for what I did. I won't stop just because you despise me."
Dar-Benn had not expected her condition to be simple and easy to grant. She had known that The annihilator hated the name given to her by the Kree and that is why she persisted in using it even after her most loyal allies had stopped using it.
"I agree to those terms, Annihilator from henceforth, I will call you Danvers."
The Annihilator beamed at her, " Thank you, Dar-Benn."
There is no reason that she should stop calling her what she was in her own mind.
"There is a public ceremony, Don't leave the planet, Danvers."
The Annihilator groaned in frustration, The traitor was not a fan of pageantry of any kind. Dar-Benn decided she would extend the ceremony by 5 hours to the ceremony to keep the esteemed guest of the Empire entertained.
