PSA: Sorry I've busy lately, and will likely be in the future, so this might be the last chapter for a while. At least it's the longest though.
Steel and Sorcerers – Chapter 44
Yamato walked through the polished glass front doors of a Tokyo office complex. It was supposedly here that the Japanese branch of a recently founded American-based think tank called the Horizon group was holding its meetings.
He was soon greeted by an official who directed him to a conference hall filled with dozens of other individuals in suits, many of them foreigners. There was still about 30 minutes before the meeting would begin, so everyone was mostly just talking amongst themselves. However, being the former prime minister for a time before he famously resigned just a few weeks after taking office due to increased sanctions and economic pressure, he was instantly recognised.
Immediately, he was surrounded by people asking things like, "What's a big shot like you doing here?", and trying to get his views on various topics. Since the main focus of the thinktank was currently finding ways to counter the special region, there were also a few people trying to pry secrets out of him on that topic due to his previous insider knowledge. He was used to this by now, so he politely responded to them without giving too much away. After what seemed like an excruciatingly long period, 30 minutes had passed and it was time for the meeting and official discussion to begin.
Later, about 25 minutes into the meeting, Yamato was already losing interest. The topics being discussed here, as well as the responses were all incredibly generic. 'To counter troll regeneration we should use flamethrowers. We should set up healing potion production facilities.' These were the kinds of things you would see being discussed on public internet forums, not at a high-level meeting. Perhaps he was being too harsh, but he had already attended so many of these types of meetings that he had heard it all by now. He would continue attending for now though, since due to his prestige he attracted many people to join and donate to the think-tank, which they paid him well for. And, since he was currently unemployed, he could always use the money.
The Bloody Emperor, Jircniv Rune Farlord El-Nix clutched at his head as he reflected on the news from the battle at the Katze Plains. For a single being to be capable of inflicting 20,000 losses upon the enemy without so much as a scratch received themselves. In addition, it was possible, no, likely that the Sorcerer Kingdom, as they called themselves, had at least one or two more individuals of similar strength. Since they had a lot of powerful undead, perhaps they had one super-powerful undead controlling them. He felt immensely lucky that he had Fluder's knowledge, and prudent colleagues on his side who had avoided provoking such creatures.
Still, it seemed the Sorcerer Kingdom would soon be sending an investigation team to the empire to try and find out who sent the people that apparently attacked their home. Though, they didn't say exactly when they would be arriving.
He had ordered some investigations of his own to be done, and to his relief, so far there was no indication that any Empire-affiliated organisation could've sent them. However, what he was more concerned about, was that the so-called investigation team that the Sorcerer Kingdom sent could end up fabricating incriminating evidence against the Empire, thus creating an excuse for them to invade.
In anticipation of this, he had just sent off a messenger to the Slane Theocracy. They seemed to be the most likely and able to help deal with a nation composed of such creatures.
In the fortress-city of E-Rantel, King Ramposa III sat with his advisors and war council in the VIP villa. The army of the Sorcerer Kingdom that had driven them back at the Katze Plains had been recently spotted a distance outside the city gates, and everyone was in a panic.
It was then that a worried looking messenger entered the room, announcing "A delegation from the Sorcerer Kingdom is here to discuss our surre-, um, I mean, the situation."
At this news there was an immediate upheaval in the room. "So we still have a chance then!" "Perhaps they have run out of magic?" "They're too dangerous! We can't let them in!" "To think monsters would be able to negotiate."
The King raised his hand to call for silence. "We will allow them entry. However, there must only be one individual, and they have to come alone."
"I will pass on the message." The messenger replied nervously, before he bowed and left.
About an hour later, the King and his subordinates, including Gazef who stood in full combat gear by his side as a guard, were arrayed in the throne-room of the villa ready to receive the Sorcerer Kingdom's emissary, who had surprisingly agreed to come alone.
The smell of the freshly cut flowers began to permeate the room. An impeccable beauty, a woman with lustrous jet-black hair and the face of a goddess entered the hall. She wore a pure white dress with silky gloves covering her slender hands, and a golden spiderweb necklace covering her shoulders and chest. The only thing that indicated that they were from the Sorcerer Kingdom were the horns protruding from their head, and black feathered wings from their waist. They had all expected the delegate to be someone more monstrous, so everyone was caught off-guard.
The sound of men who had become instantly love-stricken could be heard throughout the room. The nobles who had made those sounds were also obvious in their enraptured ogles. The beauty who was able to instantly hold them captive gradually let out a smile that was like that of a loving mother. Perhaps no one else in this world could produce such a charming smile.
"My name is Albedo, a representative here from the Sorcerer Kingdom." Her back remained straight and the vertical position of her head remained unchanged, This was in contrast to her gentle demeanour; it made clear her belief that humans were too insignificant for her to bow down to.
"I am here to discuss the terms of your surrender. Hand over E-Rantel, and you shall be granted peace. This is an extremely lenient sentence for your crime of attacking Ainz-sama's home, so I would highly recommend you accept."
There were some shocked looks from the nobles, who had come out from their trance. 'To demand an entire city just over a misunderstanding, and then call it lenient?'
King Ramposa III responded, "I'm afraid I cannot accept this offer, lenient as you say it is. Though you may have defeated our forces in battle recently, we currently hold a strong defensive position here. We won't give it up so easily."
"Is that so." Albedo seemed to hold back a smile. "Well, I must admit that a siege of the city could be a rather messy affair, and Ainz-sama has graciously ordered us to capture it with as little damage as possible. Then, how about this. I propose a re-match. In 7 days time, our forces will meet and do battle again at the Katze plains, in the same location. If you lose again, then you must hand over E-Rantel, but if you win, we will leave you be."
King Ramposa III paused to think for a while, before giving his response. "Very well. In 7 days time, our forces will do battle once again at the Katze plains."
Just as Albedo was about to leave, Ramposa said, "Just one last thing. My subordinate here Gazef, said he requests to speak to the Sorcerer King Ainz Ooal Gown himself. I presume he will be present for the battle?"
Albedo's eyes went to Gazef for a moment. "Hmpf, I'll pass your message along."
Once she had left, there was chaos once again within the throne-room. Many people were demanding explanations. "Ramposa-sama, how could you agree to those terms, how could we possibly win under those conditions!" and "Why does Gazef want to speak to the Sorcerer King, how come he has permission?"
"Gentlemen!" Ramposa raised his voice ever so slightly. "The reason I agreed to these conditions was due to two considerations. Firstly, if we battle the Sorcerer Kingdom's army here and now, who knows how many civilians will die in the ensuing battle. In addition, I find it unlikely our walls would provide much of an advantage against such powerful monsters. Now, the second reason. Earlier, I spoke to the Guildmaster of the E-Rantel adventurer's guild, and while they usually don't get involved with affairs between nations, since the Sorcerer Kingdom is composed of monsters they are willing to make an exception and provide their support. The E-Rantel Guildmaster, Ainzach-san, through his connections has confirmed that some of the strongest adventuring teams in the Kingdom should be arriving here in just a few days. This includes the adamantite teams Red Drop and Blue Rose."
The nobles were in awe of such news. It was true that ordinary soldiers were no match against that ice-bug monster, but experienced adventurers? If adamantite class adventurers were on their side they would be able to easily claim victory.
"What about the adamantite team Darkness?" asked one noble.
Many others were in agreement and wanted to hear about them. They were the newest adamantite rank team in the Kingdom, and had made quite a name for themselves.
"Unfortunately, Darkness has declined the invitation. Their reason was that they had apparently fought together with the Sorcerer Kingdom against a powerful demon recently, and didn't want to participate out of respect for that."
"Wait, Darkness fought together with those monsters? I might have to re-evaluate my view of them." "Perhaps he had no choice?"
"Either way, with these adventurers on our side we should stand a good chance of winning this time.
As for Gazef's request, if they choose to abide by it, we can guarantee the presence of the Sorcerer King himself at the battle, thus giving us the opportunity to capture him, or see their capabilities.
Now, prepare your troops well for the coming battle, as the adventurers deserve all the support they can get."
A few days later, Yamato had just finished giving a presentation at the same office complex as the last meeting, when he was approached by a pair of individuals in suits and dark sunglasses.
"Kenichi Yamato-san?"
Yamato turned to face them. "Can I help you?"
"We work for the Horizon group, and were wondering if you would be interested in taking on a more senior role."
Yamato had heard that a couple of people had left the usual meetings to take on such roles, so he wasn't too suspicious.
"That does sound like something I would be interested in."
"Great, we just need to see some ID before you go for the interview, which is over in Sendai. Do you have time today?"
It was getting to late afternoon already, but he was intrigued by the offer, and didn't have anything planned for tomorrow.
"Certainly." He handed his driver's license to them, which they briefly inspected before handing back.
"Thank you. We'll go take the train now then. Please stay close by."
Some time later, they had arrived at a non-descript building in the suburbs of Sendai. They entered the front door, which led to a modern-looking, but somewhat empty small waiting room. One of the two individuals escorting him manipulated their phone, and soon a door opened, with a receptionist lady inviting him inside. Once he entered he was asked to take a seat in a chair at the centre of the room, which had no windows and seemed to be soundproofed. At this point, Yamato was hoping this wasn't some sort of elaborate prank or he was being kidnapped.
The receptionist spoke. "We just need to run a few regular tests on you before we can let you join. Someone will be with you shortly." She then left through one of several doors leading to the room.
Just a few moments later, an elderly-looking man in a doctor's outfit holding a large briefcase, and a Japanese man entered the room.
The Japanese man spoke. "This will just be the first test. Unfortunately, this is a strictly confidential medical procedure, so you will have to be blindfolded and wear noise-cancelling headphones for just a little while."
The older man disinfected his hands as Yamato put on the blindfold, him already starting to have some regrets about this.
He felt a slight tingling sensation in his mind. He'd felt this before… 'Wait, they're casting some sort of detection magic! It seems like they know what they're doing.'
After a few minutes the blindfold and headphones were removed.
"We just need to do a physical examination now. The doctor will be making physical contact and examining your hands and head."
The older man then began to touch Yamato's hands, head, face and neck, stopping after making contact and feeling each for just a few moments.
"Next we need to take a blood sample."
The list of procedures after this went on for a while. This included hooking him up to a device to measure his brain activity, and even using an MRI machine. After a few hours they were finally done.
"Thank you for your patience. If you just follow the two men back outside they'll take you to the interview location. You will have to be blindfolded and wear headphones once again unfortunately."
As Yamato was led back to the car which they had driven from the station, he hoped that this would all be worth it.
It seemed at some point he was taken out of and moved to a different car, which after a while he was taken out from again, and led into an elevator, as he felt it descending at least a few floors. He was then led a bit further, before the blindfold and headphones were finally removed, revealing he was in a very modern-looking recently constructed underground waiting room.
"Please wait here for a moment, the interviewer will come get you soon. The two individuals who had been escorting him so far then took a seat across the room from him.
Yamato could feel their eyes intensely scrutinising him through their sunglasses as he moved his head to look around at the room. If they were harvesting his organs or something they could've done so much earlier, and judging by the décor these people had some substantial funding and connections.
As he waited, Yamato also noticed the large amount of unusual-looking cameras which seemed to cover every angle within the building.
After a few minutes, a woman finally appeared.
"Please follow me, I will be conducting the interview." She then led him down a long hallway. There were two glass security gates, which after swiping an access card quickly opened and closed behind them, along with many other odd contraptions likely for security. After rounding the corner, there was another small gauntlet of such devices, before they finally entered the interview room.
It was quite large and well furnished, with a large table and seats for about 50 people, although it was currently empty. The lady invited him to take a seat across from her.
"Now, Yamato-san, as I'm sure you're aware by the amount of security protocols in place, we take our work here very seriously. Working with us means you will have to abide by such strenuous procedures regularly. In addition, you may become the target of certain unsavoury organisations if it is revealed you are working with us. All your activities will be closely monitored and your movement restricted. In addition, once you have joined there is no leaving, unless there are exceptional circumstances. However, in return you will be able to have the privilege of working together to tackle some of the greatest challenges humanity has yet faced. Do you agree to these conditions?"
She then passed him a document to sign.
These people seemed to be what Yamato was looking for, assuming they were serious. There's no way he could decline this offer.
"I accept" he said, signing the form.
"Great! Then I welcome you to Halberd Division of the Horizon Group. We're all about finding ways to deal with the particularly strong opponents of the Special Region. You'll meet the others in due time, but I'm looking forwards to working together. At the moment, the current focus is finding ways to deal with the Sorcerer Kingdom."
Workers from the EWTC were hard at work attempting to cultivate some herbs using in healing potions outside E-Rantel, when they spotted a strange figure approaching. They carried a large bag over their shoulder full of weapons. They were donned in full scale-mail armour which shone as if it were made of pure platinum, with a small sword-like insignia in the centre of the breastplate. A layer of fur was wrapped around their shoulders, and a long whitish plume sprouted from their helmet.
Via radio, the workers quickly contacted the small garrison of a few soldiers equipped with modern weapons and the couple of copper-plate adventurers they had hired, to inform them of the situation. The copper-plate adventurers, one with a spear and the other with a sword, went together with one of the workers to meet the figure, while the USJF soldiers took up shooting positions in the grass nearby. They weren't taking any chances after the last incident with Eight Fingers.
As the armoured figure approached, the worker from the farm waved at them. They waved back, indicating they were likely not hostile. After a short while they got into speaking distance.
"Greetings stranger, what brings you to our humble plantation?"
The figure put a hand to their chin, as if contemplating something. "Is this area owned by the East-West Trading Company?"
"Yes. Were you hoping to have a look around, because this area is unfortunately off-limits to non-employees."
"Ah, that is unfortunate. But no, actually I came here because I was hoping to learn more about your organisation."
"Oh, if that's the case I'd recommend going to E-Rantel, we have a branch office there. It's a shame though really, you look like you could be strong. Although… you don't have an adventuring tag? If only you'd come a couple of weeks earlier, you could've helped us fight off this big demon attack. By the way, if you do go to E-Rantel, be careful. I hear there's been some large battles or armies moving around in the area."
"Thank you. I'll head there then."
A few hours later, after having to ask for some directions, the platinum-armoured warrior found their way to the E-Rantel branch office of the EWTC. All eyes were on their imposing figure, the bag of weapons slung over their back clinking with every step they took.
"Um, how can I help you?" asked a tentative clerk.
"Hello. I spoke earlier with another member of your organisation at a plantation on the city outskirts. They said I should come here if I wanted to learn more about the EWTC."
"Oh, I see… If I may ask, for what reason are you asking, and are you affiliated with any organisation? I don't see an adventuring tag on you."
"I'm just a wandering warrior. Anyway, as I was passing though the city, I heard about the recent appearance of strong monsters near the city. Since they might attack, I was wondering whether you might need someone to help with defence."
"Ah, so you're looking to provide combat services?"
"Well, in terms of defending our own people in the event that the Sorcerer Kingdom attacks, we have enough of our own private security forces already, and we don't have any major issues with relocating, as we're fairly new here ourselves. Still though, we are interested in strong fighters, for other reasons. If you're interested in joining there's just a few tests you have to do. Alternatively, if you let us study your techniques and equipment, we can provide a level of financial compensation."
"I see. Still, if I was interested in joining, is there anything you can tell me about yourselves."
"Oh, yes of course. Well, essentially, we're a multi-national company specialising in trade. We have connections that allow us to get all sorts of exotic goods. In addition, we do have small research and security sub-divisions. Does that answer it for you?"
"These exotic goods, would it be possible for me to visit the places that they originate from? You see, as a traveller I'm interested in visiting new and interesting places."
"Ah… no, sorry I don't think that will be possible, trade secrets and all haha."
"Hmm, very well then. Thank you for your time, I'll take my leave for now."
"Thanks for coming! We have branch offices in most major cities, so feel free to visit anytime we're open."
At the gates of Arwintar, the capital of the Baharuth Empire, amongst the usual caravans the guards heard a commotion. Upon going out to investigate, they spotted an unusual and terrifying group of individuals.
There was a red-masked individual wearing an extravagant and expensive-looking purple robe. They were flanked by two mythical-looking creatures. Each had the head and mane of a lion, and a total of four wings with one pair of wings stretched out and another pair folded around them. Clad in a suit of shining armour, they were armed with a shield adorned with eye patterns in one hand and a lance of fire in the other. Even from this distance a powerful holy aura seemed to emanate from them.
Nobody wanted to, but eventually the guards mustered up the courage to approach them.
"H-halt, suspicious outlanders and identify yourselves."
"Greetings. My name is Ainz Ooal Gown. I am the ruler of the Sorcerer Kingdom, seeking an audience with the emperor."
"W-who-?" The guard's eyeballs almost flew out of his skull in shock. "Uhh, r-right away, we'll let them know, just wait right here for now please." They then quickly backed off, with one sprinting back to the city gates to deliver the news.
Merchants and travellers passing through the city gates ogled at the scene.
'Haah, I meant to keep a low-profile by not announcing my arrival, but it seems these summons were too much. Still, it could've been troublesome if they asked me to prove I was really from the Sorcerer Kingdom or something like that. Albedo said that I shouldn't have to trouble myself with matters such as speaking to humans, but I want to make a good impression on the Empire's leader.'
Speaking of Albedo, Ainz recalled the 'date' that he had promised to go on with her as a reward for her efforts in helping secure territory in Japan. As a condition, he had said it could only be within Nazarick, which she seemed to have no problem with.
As for the actual day, or rather afternoon that had been set aside, he had initially dreaded it, wondering what kind of insane schedule and experiences he might have to endure. However, it ended up being quite normal. They ended up just walking around some of the scenic areas, although it was a bit awkward because Albedo seemed too nervous to speak to him, or was secretly gloating, so they had just walked mostly in silence. Also, he could feel the jealous gazes of many of Nazarick's denizens secretly following them. Especially Shalltear, who was quite obvious.
'Hmm, I would've thought there should usually be some kind of meal which would be eaten together, but I guess because I'm undead I was spared of that. How thoughtful of her.'
His thoughts were interrupted by the guards returning, flanked this time by some officials, who all seemed out of breath.
"Our most sincere apologies for making you wait, Gown-Dono. Please come with us, the emperor has made some time to see you. Ah, would you, uh, like some refreshments or anything, you must've come a long way."
"No, I'm alright thank you. Though, I don't want to interrupt anything, so if the emperor is busy right now, I'm willing to wait a little while until he's free."
The guards and officials looked at each other, stunned. "Ah, no, no, that won't be necessary, there are no issues."
"Well, if you insist. I'll be in your care then."
Jircniv sat at his throne, various officials arrayed on either side. He quickly wiped away some sweat that was forming on his brow. He had been forced to abruptly pull out of an important meeting that he was having due to the Sorcerer King's unexpected arrival. No one had actually even met or seen the Sorcerer King up until this point, so it was vital that he make a good first impression. After all, based on what he had heard of their army's combat capabilities, failure to do so could have serious consequences.
As the ruler of the Sorcerer Kingdom entered, to show his respect he stood up to greet him. "Greetings Gown-dono. My name is Jircniv Rune Farlord El-Nix, ruler of the Baharuth Empire. How can I help you today?"
"Pleasure to make your acquaintance El-Nix-dono" Ainz said, bowing.
Many of the figures around quietly gasped that the leader of a nation rumoured to have such a powerful army was bowing before the emperor. Though, others were secretly pleased.
Jircniv frowned at them for making such audible responses. Perhaps since the Sorcerer Kingdom was a nation of monsters they simply had different customs. Acting the way they did was extremely rude, and right now they wanted to be doing everything to avoid displeasing him.
"I am here to discuss the matter of the investigation to find who was responsible for the attack on my home."
Jircniv breathed a small sigh of relief. This was not totally unexpected. Still, it was unusual that the Sorcerer King himself had come.
"Oh, that's good then. I've actually done some preliminary investigations of my own, and I haven't found any indications that anyone linked to the Empire was involved."
"It's good to hear you are also taking this matter seriously, this pleases me greatly."
Jircniv felt a wave of relief wash over him.
"However, wasn't this supposed to be a joint investigation? Can I really trust the results of your own independent information gathering?"
Jircniv's heart stuck in his chest. "Ah, of course, you're right. Well, we're ready to start as soon as you wish."
"Actually, I had a different proposal in mind."
Jircniv felt a rising wave of panic. 'Different proposal? Have I screwed up? Is he going to propose something like, surrender or be killed?'
"As you know, although my nation has existed for a long time, it is only recently that we have rejoined the world stage after centuries of isolation. Thus, we are seeking allies and support in re-establishing ourselves. So, what I was proposing was this. In exchange for us agreeing to drop the investigation into whoever caused the attack, we would like some support and recognition from the Baharuth Empire in establishing our new nation."
Jircniv wasn't exactly sure what to say. He didn't want to support the creation of a country ruled by monsters- since Ainz Ooal Gown wore a mask it was possible that they were a monster too. However, if he refused that was basically saying 'No, I don't want to support you, you are an enemy', which was exactly what he wanted to avoid. If he did that, it's almost guaranteed that they would mess with the investigation to turn it into some sort of cassus belli. He'd have to send another messenger as soon as possible to clear things up with the theocracy, but this was his only good option.
"Then, I'll accept your offer. I propose an alliance between the Sorcerer Kingdom and the Baharuth Empire!"
4 days later, and it was time for the re-match of the battle between the forces of the Re-Estize Kingdom and Sorcerer Kingdom at the Katze plains.
Despite having thousands of losses due to casualties and desertions in the previous engagement, the Kingdom had still managed to muster an army 150,000 men strong. However, this time there were several groups of individuals mixed in among the formations who stood apart from the regular conscript soldiers. They were various adventuring teams, many of them of quite high rank, who had accepted the request to either fight the Sorcerer Kingdom's forcers directly, or act as local commanders to help maintain cohesion in the Kingdom's ranks. Most notably, standing near the front were the members of the adventuring teams Red Drop and Blue Rose.
On Nazarick's side, the formation was mostly the same as before, with Cocytus in the front, and the various undead in the back with Mare. However, this time there was the addition of Ainz and Albedo, who also stood at the front near Cocytus.
"It's impressive that that actually came back after how badly they were beaten the first time" remarked Ainz.
"I would call it lunacy" said Albedo, who was dressed in their full battle armour.
"Hmm, perhaps, it may have been better for them to surrender. Still, we can't underestimate them. Cocytus, do you notice anything different about their formation this time?"
"Yes. Ainz-sama. Small. Groups. Of. Adventurers. Are. Present. Within. Their. Ranks."
"Yes, at the front there I think I can see what must be the members of Blue Rose and Red Drop," said Albedo. "Gazef Stronof is probably behind the lines defending the king."
"Do you have confirmation that he's actually there?" asked Ainz.
"Well, no, what do you mean?"
"Is it not possible that he could be setting up for a flanking attack somewhere?"
"A warrior of his calibre is hardly a threat, and we already have teams monitoring our flanks" protested Albedo. "There's only that one other person we've spotted so far, and a flying machine from Earth."
"But what if he isn't alone, or has somehow evaded detection? Anyway, the point is, you should never underestimate your enemy. If we have the means to obtain such information, there should be no reason not to do so."
"I-I see, how foolish of me. I'll direct some of our recon assets to confirm his position at once. Ah, speaking of Gazef-"
Ainz peered across the battlefield "Hmm, is that a powered suit from Yggdrasil!? Who is that?"
"Ah, that should be a member of Red Drop. We haven't been able to get much information on them though since they mostly operate in the northern areas of the Kingdom."
"I see, please make gathering information on him a top priority. Now, sorry for interrupting earlier, I believe you were saying something about Gazef?"
"Oh, no, it's nothing."
"Please Albedo, feel free to speak. We don't have anything to do right now until the Kingdom signals the start of the battle anyways."
"Well, I'm sure this must be beneath you, but when I was delivering our ultimatum to the king in E-Rantel, he said that Gazef requested to speak with you."
"Ah, I believe Cocytus mentioned this to me as well. I don't mind speaking with him. This way, we should also be able to confirm his location."
Gazef was waiting in the royal tent behind the frontlines with the king and other nobles when a messenger entered, informing them that the Sorcerer King was ready to speak to Gazef.
The nobles were shocked that the Sorcerer King had actually accepted his request, and were suspicious, but Ramposa granted Gazef permission to go.
With a couple of men from his personal platoon as an entourage, Gazef walked down the gentle slopes of the Katze plains to meet Ainz at the centre of the battlefield, who himself was flanked by two death-knights.
"Gazef-dono, it's been a while since we last met. How have things been?"
"Hmm, not so bad, the nobles have been giving me some trouble but other than that things have been just fine. How about yourself? Or, would that be rude to ask given your reason for attacking here?"
"Hahaha, no, it's quite alright. Well things have certainly been busy."
The two of Gazef's men who he had brought along were in shock at how casually the two were talking. The head warrior of the kingdom and the overlord of the Sorcerer Kingdom, chatting away like old colleagues.
"To think you were really the leader of a whole kingdom, what a surprise. Anyway, while it's been nice seeing you again, I should get to the main reason why I wished to speak with you today. Why are you doing this?"
"What exactly do you mean?"
Gazef sighed. "You seem like a good person. After all, you protected those people back in Carne village, so the reason you've given for your invasion… Why resort to such measures? I don't know the exact details, but speaking with the adventurer's guild, the people who went to your home, that location in the Tob Forest, were just adventurers accepting a request, and I'd say the losses they took that day were more than enough punishment for their deeds. Surely you must know that the Re-Estize kingdom is not behind this, despite the rudeness the nobles may have shown you."
"Hmm." Ainz exhaled. "I suppose it's ok to tell you this. To put it simply, there are powers at work in this world which I do not yet fully understand, and to prepare and defend myself against them, I must grow the strength of my nation. I imagine you can see how taking E-Rantel could work towards furthering these goals?"
Gazef took a moment to think. "I suppose given the attitude of the nobles, and the species which make up your army, cooperation isn't exactly an option… Still, with time, perhaps something could be achieved."
"Yes, perhaps. And at some point in the future. However, chance and time are both luxuries and commodities that I would rather not be spending for such a small gain."
"Yes, but do you really have proof that you are currently at threat, and need to gather forces to counter it?" As the words left Gazef's mouth, he realised how naïve they sounded.
"An unknown threat is always worse than a known threat" said Ainz. "Since I have those that I wish to protect, wouldn't it be irresponsible for me to not do everything in my power to secure their safety and happiness? Well, I suppose when it comes down to it, this is all just a simple conflict of interest. You don't want me to weaken the kingdom, weaken what you are trying to protect, and I want to strengthen what I want to protect."
"Hmph, you sure have a way with words Gown-dono. I suppose that's what it comes down to. I'll see you on the battlefield then."
"Ah, please wait one moment. I have a request".
"I thought we were done talking, what is it?"
"May I see your sword?"
"Certainly, but why?" asked Gazef as he handed it over, the soldiers in his entourage panicking but failing to stop him.
"I heard the legends about this sword, so I was simply curious. [All Appraisal Magic Item]"
"What?! This sword is amazing. How much do you know of its capabilities?" asked Ainz as he handed it back.
"I know this sword has an unreal sharpness that can cut through steel like butter."
"What a shame, this is but a small fraction of that sword's abilities."
"Wha?"
"Thus, I have an offer. Instead of E-Rantel, how about you join the Sorcerer Kingdom."
Gazef shook his head. "I'm sorry, but I am sworn to defend the king."
"I see, that is unfortunate. Then, I hope the next time we meet it will be on more favourable terms."
"As do I."
Soon after Ainz returned to the frontlines of his forces, he spotted the Kingdom's army raising a banner, the signal that they were ready to fight and it was time for the battle to begin.
Ainz deployed his magic circle. It was roughly ten meters in radius and shaped like a dome. It was centred on him. This fantastic sight drew everyone's attention, even if they knew this was an emergency situation. The magic circle glowed bluish-white, and translucent symbols appeared across its length and breadth. The sigils changed with kaleidoscopic speed, shifting between runes and letters that nobody had ever seen before. The Kingdom's troops gasped out in surprise. There was no fear or tension in their voices, like they were watching a beautiful show. However, the adventurers, and ones with keener instincts started looking around themselves in obvious discomfort.
'Nobody's there.'
After Ainz deployed his magic circle, that was what he had thought. There were no Players in the Kingdom.
Yggdrasil's Super-Tier magic was incredibly powerful. Because of that, during a large-scale battle, bringing down a person who could cast Super-Tier spells first was a basic tactic. One could hamper one's opponents in many ways. Teleportation assaults, for instance. Bombardment from atop a magic carpet. Pinpoint shooting from extreme range. There were countless methods to accomplish that aim. However, no attacks like these came toward Ainz. This was despite giving them a week to prepare and seeing that they were employing high-level adventurers. That proved there were no Yggdrasil Players present, and possibly none which knew of the existence of super-tier magic.
Under his mask, Ainz smiled, a fact which went unseen by anyone. Of course, his skeletal face could not form a smile. The bitter smile, laced with faint traces of joy, highlighted the feelings in Ainz's heart.
"So I don't need to serve as bait, then?"
His joy came from the fact that he had not met any Players from Yggdrasil. Ainz could not be counted as the greatest among the Players of Yggdrasil. There were others who were better than he was, and his odds of survival against stronger Players were not good. But at the same time, he also felt a hint of regret.
Ainz opened his hand, and within it was a miniature hourglass. If he used a cash item, he could immediately cast the Super-Tier spell. The reason why he had not done this was because he was serving as bait to verify the existence of any possible Players from Yggdrasil. However, if there were none, then there was no need to wait out the long casting time for the spell. Having to stand immobile in the middle of a magic circle was quite uncool.
He did feel a certain dark temptation to use an offensive super-tier spell, just to see what the effects would be against their army. However, there were many individuals who may have valuable information within their ranks. He could always resurrect and interrogate them later, but there was no guarantee they would accept the resurrection. In addition, there was the possibility they may have some kind of anti-interrogation magic, like the members of the Sunlit Scripture. For now, it would be safest to try and befriend them as Momon, and get information that way.
Ainz clenched his fist. The particles of sand leaking from the shattered hourglass moved against the wind and flowed into the magic circle surrounding Ainz. And then, the Super-Tier spell activated instantly.
"[Creation]!"
The magic circle fragmented and transformed into countless motes of light, which flew to the sky. And then, they spread from the air, like an explosion.
The brown landscape was almost instantly covered with a thin layer of white frost, and the air was filled with an ice-cold chill.
There was some surprise and panic amongst the enemy lines, as they recalled the AOE ice spell that the bug monster had used earlier. However, order was soon restored.
As the Sorcerer King and the black armoured knight left the frontlines and went to the back, Lakyus asked Evileye, "Do you know what that spell he cast just now was?"
"I'm not completely sure, but something with that large a radius… could it be, super-tier magic?"
"What's that?"
"I don't want to discuss it here, but it's rumoured to be the most powerful class of spells."
"I see, it certainly did look impressive, but it doesn't seem to have done much. Any idea what his intentions are?"
"Sorry, but I'm not completely sure. That bug monster apparently uses ice attacks, so maybe it's to help strengthen them. Ah, they're on the move."
"Shall we begin then?"
"Yes. Although it's a shame that the person over there won't cooperate with us." Evileye gestured towards the red suit of power-armour.
"Ah ha, I think that's just the way he is."
As Cocytus approached, the Re-Estize soldiers began to form a semi-circle around him, trying to stay out of the estimated range of his frost attack. Archers opened fire, but just like last time they were ineffective. Various mages opened fire with spells, even a few fireballs were cast, but he just kept walking forwards, seemingly unfazed.
Evileye made her way to the front. "[Crystal Lance]!". A cavalryman's lance of crystal shot out at the monster, shattering upon impact with its armoured exoskeleton.
"Hmpf, not enough. [Penetrate Maximize Magic - Crystal Dagger]!" She created a crystal dagger that was bigger than usual. This spell caused pure physical damage, which was not easily resisted. In addition, she had used a skill to allow it to breach spell resistance more easily.
The insect did not dodge, but took it on its body. The spell's damage potential had been maximized, yet it seems to have barely affected them at all.
"Still nothing. How about this then, [Vermin Bane]!" A white vapour spread from Evileye's outstretched palm, just barely making the 50 metres to engulf the insect monster in a thin fog.
"Hmm. That. Stings. Just. A. Little. I. Am. Cocytus. What. Is. Your. Name?"
The insectoid monster turned to face her.
"I'm not sure why I'm telling this to a monster, but it's Evileye!"
"Though. It. Is. A. Shame. I. Cannot. Fight. With. You. In. Earnest. Here. I. Will. Remember. Your. Name."
"Quick, while he's distracted!"
Evileye turned her attention to her left, where a group of 6 high-level adventurers were charging into melee range.
"No, stop, get back!" She yelled.
Before the start of the battle, she had warned her fellow party members to not get close to Cocytus, sensing the powerful aura he was giving off. However, it seemed these unfortunate souls were oblivious.
Cocytus suddenly drew a sword out of nothing, its blade over one hundred and eighty centimetres long, as though it had been sheathed in the air.
A series of fluid cuts whooshed quietly through the air. If not for the present situation, it would have been a sound which people would want to listen for.
The group of adventurers fell apart into chunks of cleanly sliced meat, which tumbled across the icy plains. They had stood no chance.
After Cocytus was hit by another wave of spells he said, "I. Tire. Of. This. One-sided. Bombardment."
Evileye noticed that several of the death knights that had been held in reserve suddenly began to sprint across the battlefield towards the kingdom's army, their empty eyes filled with bloodlust. It was a terrifying sight to behold.
"[Piercing Icicles]."
Evileye's attention quickly snapped back to Cocytus as she narrowly dodged a rain of razor-sharp shards of ice.
"[Vermin bane!]"
As the death knights charged across the battlefield, Azuth decided to finally take flight. Flying in the air with his [Armour of Reinforcement], he took aim at the incoming undead and pulled the trigger.
There was a loud bang sound, and the first death knight twitched a little, but kept on running. However, a couple of follow-up shots soon caused it to crumble into ashes. "Heh." He then moved onto the next one.
By this time, the death knights had made it across the field, and were wreaking havoc among the kingdom's forces, the higher-levelled adventurers barely able to slow down the progress of their merciless rampage.
After not too long though, they had all been dealt with, mostly thanks to himself. He then moved to the bug monster, taking a few shots at it.
However, much to his surprise the shots simply bounced off, causing them no harm. He then activated the [Fire Storm] spell stored in the suit, causing the insect to become engulfed in a ball of flames.
However, once the fire cleared, they remained standing there unharmed.
"Tch." Perhaps he would try attacking the vulnerable opponents hiding in the rear. That one in the robes was supposed to be the Sorcerer King. Taking him out could win them the battle.
He moved into position and took a shot. However, he quickly regretted doing so, as a harsh jolt rocked the frame of the suit.
The black-armoured individual, now standing in front of the Sorcerer King had jumped in and deflected his shot right back at him.
'Still, to require protection, that must mean that they're vulnerable.'
Azuth prepared another spell. [Chain Dragon Lightning].
A bolt of dragon-shaped lightning shot towards the enemy, engulfing them in electricity and jumping between those around them.
However, at the spell's end, although some nearby death knights were obliterated, the Sorcerer King and his entourage were still standing. 'How troublesome.'
His thoughts were quickly interrupted however when the black-armoured knight suddenly took to the air on a pair of feathered black wings, making a beeline towards him.
He took that as his signal to withdraw, and as he flew off it seemed that they didn't follow him.
They had certainly learned some valuable information about the capabilities of the adventurers during this battle, but Ainz felt it was starting to drag on without a definitive conclusion. That adventurer from Red Drop was proving particularly troublesome.
"I'm going to order all of the Soul Eaters to attack. That one in the powered suit shouldn't be able to stop them all, and I don't want to reveal too many of our own skills given who's watching."
"Of course Ainz-sama," replied Albedo.
Skeletal warriors in shining golden armour, riding horses of bone imbued with tendrils of fog, sparkling pus yellow and emerald green, began to gallop across the battlefield towards the enemy.
Due to their high speed, only a couple of them were eliminated before they got into range.
Soul Eaters have long-range attack skills with many uses. They can receive a temporary power-up buff for killing their target through the skill, making them hard to defeat. Soul Eaters can consume the souls of the deceased for sustenance while also growing stronger and recovering their HP the more souls they eat. So, long as there is a steady supply of souls to feed, their HP bar would be refilled in no time. In addition, they are capable of killing everyone who smells their breath of instant death. When Soul Eaters appeared in YGGDRASIL, they were almost always on-level encounters. Therefore, the chances of a player being downed by an instant death effect would only be one in a hundred or less. However, in this case almost all the opponents were low levelled enough to succumb to this skill, giving Ainz an opportunity to see this ability in action.
It was a complete rout.
The Soul Eaters charged through the kingdom's ranks, leaving trails of dead soldiers in their wakes, and whenever the higher-levelled adventurers got in any hits, the sheer amount of souls they were consuming meant their health bars were refilled almost instantly. There was no option but to retreat, no, to run away as fast as they could. By the end, even Evileye and some of the other adamantite-rank adventurers felt it was through sheer luck they had made it out alive, as the soul-eaters seemed to have diverted around them during the attack.
At this point, the fate of E-Rantel was clear. Of the 150,000 soldiers on the kingdom's side who had participated in the battle, a little under 20,000 survived.
After the battle, Azuth Aindra flew some distance before touching down beneath the base of a large tree, deactivating a part of his armour to show his face. A platinum-armoured individual was there waiting for him.
"Ah, sorry I'm a bit late."
"Don't worry, I understand things got a little chaotic out there. So, how was it fighting against them?"
"Well, I can deal with their foot soldiers without too much trouble, but the higher-rank ones, well I'm not sure my attacks were even having any effect on them if I'm honest. I think someone on your level would be required to deal with them."
"I see, that is troubling. If you don't mind, would you be able to put together a detailed report for me later?"
"Aw come on, you know I hate that kind of stuff" he smiled. "But, how did you know about all of this happening anyway and contact me, I thought you mostly kept to the Council State up north?"
The one in the platinum armour paused for a moment. "An adventurer by the name of Momon, and his partner Sebas told me about a disturbance that was happening in the area, possibly of an otherworldly nature."
"Oh, I've heard of them. They're a fairly new adventuring team around these parts. I actually asked why they weren't present for the battle, and apparently it was because they fought together with the Sorcerer King recently against a demonic threat. Thus, out of respect they opted not to join."
"What do you know about this demonic threat?"
"Sorry, I didn't get any details. Though, I haven't heard about anything like that, so it was probably something outside the kingdom."
"I see. I know it's a lot to ask, but please look into it for me."
"Certainly."
"I also had another query, what do you know about the East-West Trading Company?"
"Huh, not much really, other than they're a trading company from afar that recently set up in the kingdom."
"If you wouldn't mind, I would also like to gather information on them. I have a feeling that they are linked in some way to the Sorcerer Kingdom."
"You mean the event that supposedly happens every 200 years?"
"Yes, perhaps. It is about that time after all. Anyway, we should go back. We'll meet again soon."
