Panting, Ryuukhan ran through the streets as the airships hovering overhead deployed their cargo. Clutching his precious cargo, he darted into an alleyway as one house erupted in flame, scattering soldiers all over. In the firelight, he saw a large metallic shape emerge from the wreckage. Shaped like a man, it towered over the soldiers on triangular treads like a tank's as the "face" glowed a bright green.
Peering down on the humans below, it raised its clawed arm and shot wires out into the ground. Before the soldiers could react, the crackle of electricity filled the air, followed by the soldiers' screams as they were hit by a wave of lightning. Collapsing before the behemoth, the soldiers were helpless as masked men, Equalists by their appearance, emerged from the surrounding houses and began tying them up.
'They need help!' he thought, but hesitated as he looked over the situation. 'But how?! There are at least a dozen Equalists and one of me! Not to mention that lightning wire is not all that machine can do. What do I do?!'
Racking his brain for ideas, he remembered the blueprints he had stolen earlier. He remembered the engine was in the back of the torso and heavily armored with platinum, studded with vents and pipes, like a Satomobile's tail-pipe. Looking down, he saw some rocks about the size of his palm. Pocketing them, he inhaled deeply to steady his nerves before rushing from the alleyway.
"Hey!" an Equalist yelled out and hurled an object at Ryuukhan's feet. Vaulting overhead, he turned sharply as the Equalist tried to grab him. Pivoting on one foot, he grabbed the man's wrist and jammed his palm into his elbow, hurling him toward his compatriots. Rushing toward the burning building, he thrust his hands out and twisted, engulfing the Equalists and the machine in the flames.
Masked by the fire, he ran behind the machine and jumped off the smashed window ledge, grabbing the pipes in the back. Shoving the rocks inside the pipes, he grabbed hard and exhaled sharply, heating up the metal until it glowed bright red under his fists. Pressing hard, he pinched the pipes shut around the rocks before jumping off into the burning building. As the Equalists turned toward him, he delivered a rapid flurry of punches, knocking them to the ground as fire-balls blasted them in the face.
The machine, recognizing the threat, turned and reached for him with its clawed arm. Jumping up, Ryuukhan ran up the arm and kicked the gap in the shoulder as hard as he could. The force of the impact sent him flying back into the building while the machine staggered slightly. Landing on his back, Ryuukhan found himself engulfed in fire, the crackle of burning wood and papers mixed with the stink of oil and paint.
'It's kinda sad,' he mused briefly. 'Amon is destroying the city in order to save it.'
But his musings were cut short by the groan of wood as the ceiling came collapsing down. Raising his arms, he tried to fend off the burning wreckage, thinking frantically 'Gotta get to the police! The police! Police!'.
To his surprise though, instead of the crushing weight of burning wood, he felt a squeezing sensation, like he was being pushed inside a tight rubber hose. His breathing completely stopped as his body was twisted and squeezed under immense pressure, his eyes feeling like they would pop out of their sockets. But just as suddenly as it came, the squeezing sensation ceased before he felt a cold metal floor under him and cool air filled his empty lungs.
'Wait! Metal?!' he realized as his eyes snapped open. 'Police HQ?! How'd I get here?!'
"Agh!" someone screamed from behind. "Where'd you come from?!"
"That's what I wanna know!" he responded, rushing to his feet, only to feel metal wires wrap around him. "Hey, wait a minute! Let me explain!"
"We don't have time for you!" a man barked from behind. "Ever since Tarrlok mobilized the United Forces the whole city erupted into chaos. Riots, protests, street-brawls. The whole place is a mess."
"That's what I need to tell you about!" Ryuukhan yelled out. "This isn't just street violence, it's a full-on war! The Equalists have weapons that can defeat professional soldiers!"
"What kind of weapons?" Chief Beifong's voice rang out. "And how do you know, young man?"
"They have gloves that can shock you with electricity, 30 Xu worth," he replied, wriggling in the wires. "As well as human-shaped machines that can shoot electric wires and metal discs from clawed hands. They roll on tank treads, and are encased in platinum armor."
"Platinum?!" Chief Beifong cried in alarm. "Are you sure it's platinum?!"
"I've got the blueprints," he nodded. "See for yourself."
"Let him go!" she ordered. "I need him to tell us everything."
"I also have this," he added, shaking out his arms once freed from the wires. "A working glove from their arsenal, and a list of everyone they've called. Names, times, and dates."
"Well don't keep it all to yourself!" she snapped. "Give them to us!"
Nodding, he emptied his jacket, exposing his precious cargo: a metal glove and gauntlet, a series of blueprints, and a few lists. While the papers had crumbled under his jacket and were covered in sweat, he thanked the Spirits that the calligraphy remained legible.
"How-? How-?" Chief Beifong muttered as she read the blueprints. "How could they have gotten all of this?!"
"I overheard them talking," he replied. "They said that Amon originally only had a dozen followers or so, but he made a deal with the Eight-Animal Tong; he'd take out their competition and they would provide the material and manpower for his revolution."
"The Eight-Animal Tong?!" Chief Beifong groaned. "I thought we took care of them some time ago!"
"Oh you did!" he said. "They lost their leaders, some of their main safe-houses and a lot of money, if not to the police then to the Triads. But they still had followers and contacts, including Ms. Tsui who apparently paid Mr. Sato a few visits before all this started. They also said a number of them started believing in the Equalist message, so Amon was able to convert a few of them."
"It seems the problem goes far deeper than we thought," Chief Beifong sighed. "But it can't be helped. I'll send police officers to arrest the people on this list immediately, as well as inform the United Forces about what to expect from the Equalists."
"Keep an eye out for vehicles leaking fluid," he said, eyes downcast. "That would be Xin's work."
"Xin?!" Chief Beifong exclaimed. "Where is she?!"
"I don't know for sure!" he yelled back. "We were at this warehouse on the outskirts. She sabotaged the vehicles while I stole this information. We were able to elude the people inside for a few days, but we were eventually found out. We were able to escape the warehouse but we got separated. I ran ahead to draw them away from her, with the plan to reunite at Police HQ or Air Temple Island as soon as possible."
Sighing in frustration, she hung her head down just as someone bent down and whispered in her ear. After a moment, she raised her head and let out an outraged yell.
"If all this is not enough," she hissed. "Now the phone lines are cut! Is there no end to this madness?!"
Taking a few breaths, she turned to the officers and barked out "Don't just stand there! Mobilize our squads! We have a lot of people to arrest tonight!"
"As for you, young man!" she said, turning to Ryuukhan. "You're heading for Air Temple Island! Get Hina and fly out to General Iroh of the United Forces First Division! He'll be with the United Forces Navy on the Mo Ce Sea. You cannot miss it. No arguments!"
"Yes, Chief Beifong," he replied, racing behind the police officers. Bobbing and weaving in-between them, he quickly made his way outside, emerging onto the parade ground as the officers lined at attention.
'But how to get there?' he wondered as he lingered outside. 'Can I do-whatever that was again?'
Focusing on Air Temple Island, he lifted his arms up as he did before, thinking 'Air Temple Island! Air Temple Island! Air Temple Island!'
But to his surprise he felt no pressure. No squeezing sensation. Nothing like what had happened earlier.
"Why didn't it work?" he asked aloud, shocked and frustrated.
"Why didn't what work?" someone asked. Turning he saw it was Bolin, looking back from the police lineup.
"Bolin," Ryuukhan said, embarrassed he had been heard while also glad to see a friendly face.
"Officers!" Chief Beifong barked out, interrupting them. "We have received critical intelligence regarding the truth of the Equalist Revolution! The following people are to be arrested for colluding with the Equalists and/or the Eight-Animal Tong! The charges are conspiracy to overthrow a legitimate government, and aiding and abetting known terrorists! Yes, the Equalists are to be regarded as terrorists until further notice! Now the individuals to be arrested are…"
As Chief Beifong read out the list of contacts, Ryuukhan tried once more to recreate the strange sensation that brought him to Police HQ. Falling onto his back, he lifted his arms to fend off an imaginary attack, thinking furiously about Air Temple Island and the people on it. Sweet, motherly, frazzled Pema. Intelligent and helpful Jinora. Energetic and talkative Ikki. Stern, overbearing but ever supportive Tenzin.
But to his frustration, nothing happened. He remained firmly on the ground, his arms up in the air like the Cowardly Pig-Chicken.
"What am I doing wrong?!" he ground out in frustration. "I KNOW it worked before, so why not now?!"
"Um, Ryuukhan," Bolin said, reaching down. "I don't know what this is about, but I don't think laying down there is going to help."
"All right," he said, pulling himself up. "I need to get to Air Temple Island. Hina and I can warn General Iroh of the Equalists."
"General Iroh?!" Bolin exclaimed. "You're going to see General Iroh?! I'm so jealous! I'm stuck on backup duty."
"Really?!" Ryuukhan asked. "I would have thought you and Mako would be front and center for this job!"
"Yeah about that," Bolin said, voice trailing off. "Mako's…not in the best shape right now."
"What do you mean?" Ryuukhan asked, anxious. "What happened?"
"I'll explain it to you on the way there," Bolin replied. "After all, you're going to need backup, and I know how we can get there."
"Lead the way," Ryuukhan said, following Bolin toward the bay.
-Line Break-
"So to summarize," Ryuukhan said as the ferry reached Air Temple Island at long last. "Tenzin's in a coma, Asami got her face ripped, Mako's been poisoned, and Tarrlok and Amon have both mobilized for war."
"Yeah, pretty much," Bolin shrugged as they raced up the stairs. "The whole situation has wreaked havoc on Korra, and it's gotten worse, far worse following the brawl at the Park."
"Korra!" Ryuukhan exclaimed. "Where is she?! Is she alright?!"
"I-I don't know," Bolin shrugged. "She said she had work to do tonight, but I haven't seen her. I heard her talking about a task force but not much more than that."
"That must be Tarrlok's task force," Ryuukhan said as they crossed the threshold. "He was the one who called for the United Forces, and Korra was never the type to sit patiently. With all this tension she would snap like a bowstring sooner or later."
"Funny, she says the same about you." Bolin quipped, earning a glare from Ryuukhan. "Well, you're not very patient either. Did you wait for the police during the last Equalist attack?"
"Those weren't Equalists," Ryuukhan said, nearing the stable. "Or not all of them were. Some were Tong members acting for payment or revenge. Others adopted the Equalist message."
"Wait, the Tong?!" Bolin exclaimed. "I thought the police did away with them!"
"Yeah, I've heard that before," Ryuukhan rolled his eyes as he patted Hina on the beak. "But no. Apparently they made a deal with Amon, supporting his revolution in exchange for getting rid of their enemies. Strangely, these guys may not have been acting on Amon's orders on the latest attack."
"Okay, this is getting ridiculous!" Bolin yelled, holding his head in his hands. "At this rate my head's going to explode! Let's get going!"
"You got it," Ryuukhan said, leading Hina outside. "I hope you're not afraid of heights."
-Line Break-
"This is awesome!" Bolin yelled out, just barely audible over the rushing wind. "I can't believe I'm riding a wyvern-hawk! Yahoo!"
"I'm glad you're enjoying yourself!" Ryuukhan yelled back, grinning like a maniac. "Now where's General Iroh's fleet?!"
"It doesn't help that it's so dark!" Bolin replied. "Wait! Look over there!"
Turning, Ryuukhan saw a cluster of lights glowing against the dark water. Reflecting in the water, illuminated by the lights, he could make out the silhouettes of a large, flat-topped ship. Pulling the reins, he turned Hina toward the large shape and kicked to signal her to go faster.
"I bet that's the fleet!" he exclaimed, handing Bolin the reins. "Hold her steady!"
Inhaling deeply, he punched the air above, creating a bright fire-plume. In response powerful searchlights pierced the darkness, turning night into day. Nearly blinded, Hina lurched to the side, carrying them from the fleet, the light following them.
"Keep her steady!" Ryuukhan yelled, feeling her turn back to the fleet. "I just need more time!"
Focusing on his breathing, he punched the air again, sending a new fire-ball that burned brightly over the searchlight before quickly fizzling out. Once the fire burned out, he punched again, exhaling slowly as the fire-ball burned long and low. Soon after, he released a series of punches, producing two more quick burners that matched his quicker breathing.
'I hope they're getting this!' he thought frantically.
Thankfully, the light dimmed enough for him to open his eyes. Regaining his sight, he saw one light flicker on and off, matching his own fire-balls in duration and brightness. Sighing in relief, he released a new series of fire-balls as the ship's deck was flooded in light.
"Thanks!" he called out, taking back the reins. "We're going in!"
Leaning forward, they rapidly approached the ship's deck, the water being replaced by steel and wood. Pulling back, Hina spread her wings out over the deck and reached out her talons.
But she reached out too soon. Instead of feeling solid metal, her talons grasped empty air, forcing her to flap furiously to keep herself airborne. Jostling in her saddle, her passengers held on for dear life, Ryuukhan to the reins and Bolin to Ryuukhan.
"Easy! Easy girl!" he yelled out, trying to avoid getting tossed out. "Lower slowly! That's it."
After furiously flapping, Hina's efforts diminished as her talons finally found purchase on the deck. Relieved, she lowered her wings and slumped forward onto her knuckles, head hung low as Bolin slowly released his grip on Ryuukhan.
"Another-happy-landing," Ryuukhan breathed out as Bolin jumped down from her back.
"Yes, yes indeed," he replied, stretching out his back. "But not for long!"
"Who are you?!" someone yelled out hoarsely. "What are you doing here?!"
"Let me explain," Ryuukhan called out, jumping off Hina. "No, too much. Let me summarize. Amon and the Equalists have electric gloves and giant tanks, and are using them to ambush soldiers in the City. Now that Tarrlok has called out the military, Amon is trying to rally the people to overthrow the government. I was sent to contact General Iroh by Chief Beifong herself."
"I'm General Iroh," someone spoke up, pushing to the front. "Tell us all you know about these weapons. We have much to discuss in my war-room."
"I have the blueprints for them here," he continued, pulling out the papers. "Fortunately, I don't think they have a lot of them. I overheard some of them complaining about their numbers, but don't underestimate them. They know the city well, and they've had at least a week to get into position."
"General Iroh!" Bolin piped in. "I know the city very well, so I can tell you where they would likely set up their ambushes. And if Ryuukhan can tell us where he found them, that would be of great help."
"Very well," General Iroh nodded, pulling down a map of Republic City. "When you're ready, tell us all you know."
"I know it was in the outskirts," Ryuukhan began, looking over the map. "An old warehouse with a large underground chamber. They were using trucks and other vehicles to get around the city, so it must have a large elevator or a tunnel of some sort. When the ambush began, I saw the Harpooner and the Cuttle-whale, so it must have been south-southeast, probably the industrial district. But who knows how many of these points they set up?"
"Right now," General Iroh said. "I'll take anything I can get. We've already lost several squads to ambushing Equalists, and we need to know what to expect."
"If you want my advice," Ryuukhan said. "Tell your soldiers to keep their distance and rely on ranged attacks. These weapons are devastating at close-range, and they are very agile but their main ranged weapons are on those tanks. Also, be very careful when canvassing a possible ambush; they have powerful explosives and will use them."
"Thank you," General Iroh replied, eyes furrowed in thought. "I'll look over these blueprints. Bolin, you point out the best ambush positions in Republic City."
"General," Ryuukhan interjected. "I must also warn you about the Eight-Animal Tong. They're part of Amon's forces and will pose a serious threat to your soldiers."
"Thank you," General Iroh said. "Anything you give me will be valuable. Now, what else?"
-Line Break-
"That was exhausting," Bolin sighed. "Glad it took us less than one hour."
"Yes," Ryuukhan replied, looking out over the bay. "But it was such a long hour. We still don't know what's going on or how Korra, Asami, Mako, or Xin are doing."
"Hey, we're doing the best we can!" Bolin reassured. "And General Iroh's plan is solid! Those Equalists don't stand a chance!"
"Still, I can't help but feel that something terrible is happening right now," Ryuukhan sighed. "And I can't stand General Iroh's orders! We're stuck here on this battleship, right when people need us most!"
"I know the feeling!" Bolin snapped, startling Ryuukhan. "I can't stand the idea of being here when my brother might be in danger! But what do you propose we do?!"
Just as Ryuukhan started to reply, a light flashed out from over the bay. The flash burned bright and long, like fire, and originated from Air Temple Island.
"You don't think-!" Ryuukhan exclaimed.
"I sure do!" Bolin replied, running toward Hina.
"Come on girl!" Ryuukhan urged her on.
With a loud screech, Hina galloped toward the bow and flung herself forward, just narrowly missing the upturned bow. Down below, the water rushed toward them. Panicking, Hina furiously beat her wings, violently jostling her passengers as they clung for dear life.
Thankfully, Hina's desperate efforts proved just enough to stay airborne. Urging her forward, Ryuukhan and Bolin flew toward Air Temple Island, climbing in elevation for a better vantage. Ascending the hill, they found the stable on fire while Naga, barking furiously, raced here and there as masked men taunted her with wires and electric gloves.
'Oh no you don't!' Ryuukhan resolved, diving sharply. Jumping into a crouch, he grasped the reins in his teeth and set out a series of fire-punches. Knocking a few of the Equalists down, he pulled up just above their heads. Sweeping his hands to the side, he amplified the wind from Hina's wings, knocking many onto their backs.
Banking sharply, Ryuukhan smiled as Naga took the opportunity to avenge herself upon her tormentors. Swiping furiously, she sent many flying down the stairs, landing on a heap at the bottom. Seeing their comrades fall before the polar-bear dog, the remaining Equalists rallied to take her down, but she proved too fast and furious. Charging toward a cluster, Naga knocked them over before grabbing one by the head and shaking violently.
'He's done for!' Ryuukhan thought as Naga flung his body to the side. 'Our turn!'
Coming in hot, Hina reared back and flapped her wings hard and fast. Twirling his hands, Ryuukhan amplified the wind from her wings, sending the Equalists flying into the Spinning Gates. Jumping off Hina, Ryuukhan gathered the wind and thrust it forward, spinning the Gates at top speed and trapping the Equalists inside as they bounced and banged like human pinballs.
"My turn!" Bolin called out. Leaping off Hina, he tore fissures into the earth with a stomping motion. Thrusting his hands, the fissures grew under the Equalists and, with a clamping motion, he encased the Equalists in the earth. Turning to Ryuukhan, he gave a cheeky grin and a thumbs-up, to which Ryuukhan returned.
"Take that!" someone yelled from inside. "Get off our island!"
"You stay here!" Ryuukhan yelled, rushing indoors. "I'll take care of things inside!"
Busting through the doors, he found the hallway an utter mess; tables overturned and hangings torn with smashed furniture. What struck him most were the burn-marks on the walls. They were all circular, much too precise for Firebending, and they radiated outward like lightning bolts. Further down, he heard a heavy object hit the ground followed by a girl laughing.
'Ikki,' he thought, racing down the hallway. Turning the corner, he caught movement in the dining hall and ran towards the door. Just as he crossed the threshold, a gust of wind knocked a man on top of him while Ikki yelled in triumph.
"Little brat," the Equalist muttered, pushing himself up, his electric glove crackling.
But Ryuukhan was too quick for him. Wrapping his legs around his waist, he grabbed the man's right arm and pushed into his back. Landing on top of the man, he pinned the man down as he struggled to reach him with his glove. Grabbing the flailing arm, Ryuukhan twisted the wrist and pulled it to the man's back. Desperately the man flung himself backwards, sending Ryuukhan flying into the dining hall.
Landing on his back, he had just enough time to watch someone trip over him before his main target came running at him, his glove crackling hot. Instinctively, he kicked out, catching the man in the stomach and knocking the wind from him. Seeing his chance, Ryuukhan kicked furiously, striking the Equalist in the solar plexus, throat, and nose before finishing up with a final kick to the groin.
As the Equalist collapsed whimpering in pain, Ryuukhan pulled himself to his feet just as a gust of wind knocked him onto the table. Hearing a yelp, he saw the Equalist he had just defeated roll across the room like a tumble-cactus until he slammed into his comrade at the far end. Rushing quickly, Ryuukhan wrapped his hand in a thick wall hanging, grabbed the crackling glove and jammed it into the men, their screams filling the air until they fell into silence.
But soon the silence was broken by the sounds of a baby crying.
"Ryuukhan!" he heard the girls exclaim. "Now look at the mess you've made!"
Turning he saw the girls standing in a dramatic pose, crouching low with outstretched arms and firm glares on their faces. Despite himself, he broke into laughter, falling next to the unconscious men as the girls merely looked at each other.
"I'm sorry," he gasped out, his ribs aching. "It's just that you two look pretty cute when you act tough. That and it's been a long night."
"Now you've woken up Meelo," Jinora sighed, resuming her normal pose. "We were trying to keep things quiet so as not to wake him up."
"He slept through THIS?" he remarked, eyes wide in incredulity. "With Naga's roaring, the men yelling, furniture smashing, and lightning crackling, how could he be asleep?"
"Perhaps you came in at the wrong time," Ikki replied, her voice running at hyper-speed. "Or maybe mom's just that good. Or maybe he just really likes the sounds of battle, mm-hmm. Or maybe he just doesn't like you very much, mm-hmm. So many possibilities, so little time."
Once again Ryuukhan broke out into laughter at how quickly Ikki could talk. But more than that, it felt like things were back to normal. He was back on Air Temple Island to train and learn Airbending. He was laughing at the girls' antics. Pema was nearby ready to smother him in worry and care. Naga and Hina were outside in the courtyard. All that was missing was…
"Korra!" he exclaimed, jumping up and scaring the girls. "Do you two know where she might be?!"
"Korra?" Jinora repeated. "No, we haven't seen her since yesterday."
"Yeah," Ikki added. "She was REALLY bad at Airbending training yesterday. She looked really distracted and angry, though getting knocked around in those Gates would not have helped."
"Not to mention everything else that's happened," he added. "Things are REALLY getting heated up. Tarrlok's ordered the United Forces into the city, and Amon's Equalists are equipped with electric gloves and giant tanks. The police are arresting people that the Equalists contacted, and General Iroh is planning a multi-strike operation to take down the Equalists and the Tong, who are working together."
"And you know all this how?" a voice called in from outside. Turning, he saw it was Pema holding Meelo in her arms. Her eyes, normally warm and inviting, bore into him with intense anxiety.
"I-I-" he started, withering under her gaze.
"I'm waiting," Pema said, pressing him. "How do you know all this?"
"I snuck into one of their bases," he admitted. "I stole blueprints and lists before breaking out and contacting the police. After that, I contacted General Iroh under Chief Beifong's orders. Then I saw your Temple on fire and flew here to investigate."
"You-you-" Pema started before sighing in exasperation. "Of all the reckless, idiotic, irresponsible stunts to pull-"
"Hey, Ryuukhan," Bolin called out as he entered the dining hall. "I took care of all the Equalists outside and I wanted to check inside to see how you and the girls are doing."
Seeing a frazzled Pema holding a fussing Meelo and staring down a sheepish Ryuukhan, Bolin asked "Did I come in at a bad time?"
"No, not at all," Pema replied sweetly. "You've arrived just in time to explain a few things."
"Oh boy," Bolin sighed as Pema rounded on him. "Ryuukhan, you wanna back me up here?"
But as Ryuukhan started to crack up, he heard a loud explosion from outside. Before anyone could stop him, he raced past Pema and Bolin and headed outside. Looking toward the mainland, he saw one of General Iroh's zeppelins lurch downward as something flew over it and banked for another pass.
"What is that?!" he asked, pointing to the ongoing aerial battle.
"I-I don't know!" Bolin replied.
"Grab this!" Ryuukhan barked out. Stomping the earth, he levitated a decent-sized rock, probably about 60 or 70 pounds in weight. Waving his arms, he levitated it toward Bolin who merely stared in shock at Ryuukhan's Earthbending.
"What are you waiting for?!" he yelled, the lapse in concentration causing the rock to dip suddenly. Quickly, he regained control, holding the rock just inches above the ground though the strain was starting to get to him. "Grab the rock! We're going to need it!"
"Right!" Bolin replied, and Ryuukhan sighed as he felt the weight ease off him. "But how-?"
"Get on!" Ryuukhan snapped, leaping onto Hina. To his shock though, Hina bucked and jolted, trying to throw him off. Pulling close, he heard her heartbeat and realized what was wrong: Hina was simply tired. While she had gone for long flights in the past, like to Republic City, those had been pretty quiet, monotonous flights, not like this intense, high-demand deal.
'Not to mention she was only carrying me that whole time,' he realized, looking at Bolin. 'And that boulder is NOT exactly light. I gotta get her some food.'
Jumping off, he raced to the kitchens and rummaged through the stocks, rapidly going through vegetables, rice, and tofu until he found a frozen sword-marlin. Heating it in his hands, he waited until the scales flaked off easily. Slicing it into thin pieces, he returned to the courtyard and declared "Hina, fish!".
Once she turned her head Ryuukhan tossed the largest piece into the air. Expertly, Hina gulped it down whole, followed by another and another. Seeing her distracted, Ryuukhan slipped behind her and jumped onto her back. Pulling on the reins, he said "There's more when we get across."
Irritated, Hina huffed as Bolin, levitating the boulder above his shoulder, clambered upon her back. Seeing a thumbs-up, Ryuukhan kicked Hina to send her galloping toward the cliffs. Launching herself into the air, Ryuukhan and Bolin made a beeline for the ongoing aerial battle.
'Okay, what are we dealing with?' Ryuukhan wondered. 'Wait! What's that sound?!'
Turning he saw what he thought was another wyvern-hawk like Hina, but the wings were not flapping and he could make out a sound like an engine or a buzzard-wasp. The unknown flying entity circled above the zeppelin, dropping items that detonated in a blinding flash. As the entity circled around for another pass, Ryuukhan saw it had two wings, one above the other and glistened in the light.
'A flying machine!' he realized. 'Okay, what should we do?!'
Evidently he would get an answer, for the bi-wing machine's return course was about to intercept them. Hearing the high buzzing sound, Hina pulled back, sending Ryuukhan and Bolin pitching forward, their rock nearly slipping from Bolin's grasp.
"Steady, steady!" Ryuukhan called, pulling her to the side. "We can handle this! Are we good back there?!"
"Yeah!" Bolin yelled back. "But that thing's fast! How are we going to take it out?!"
"Can you break it up into pebbles?!" Ryuukhan asked, watching the bi-wing turn for another pass at the zeppelin. "Instead of one big rock, we could hit it with a lot of little rocks!"
"Oh, I get it!" Bolin replied. "Sure thing!"
"Okay!" Ryuukhan yelled, pulling Hina to intercept the bi-wing.
But the pilot spotted them and dove for the zeppelin, scraping its back with a horrible screech. Hina, alarmed by the sound, pulled back as Ryuukhan struggled to hold on. Meanwhile the bi-wing pulled up before spiraling upward.
'What are they…' Ryuukhan wondered as he watched it soar higher and higher before leveling out. 'After them!'
Urging Hina upward, Ryuukhan launched a fire-ball to illuminate the bi-wing's underside and saw metal cylinders hanging down. Unsure at first, he watched them fall towards the struggling zeppelin. Instinctively, he swept his arms forward, knocking them off-course with a gust of wind.
The bi-wing, upon dropping its cargo, made a beeline for the mainland, but Hina was soon on their tail. The bi-wing desperately veered left and right to try and shake them, but Ryuukhan refused to be shaken off. With a strong tug of the reins, Hina climbed over the bi-wing before Ryuukhan leaned down, sending her into a dive. Narrowing her wings, she quickly closed the distance and Ryuukhan yelled "Now!" at the top of his lungs.
Bolin, either hearing his scream or reading his lips, shattered the boulder into pebbles with a clench of his fists before sending the fragments flying towards the bi-wing at super-high speed. Soon the air was filled with the pinging of stone on metal, followed by the smell of gasoline and motor oil. With a massive lurch, the bi-wing dropped like a rock and screeched against the street.
Landing not far from the crash, Ryuukhan leaped off Hina's back and went to investigate when the bi-wing suddenly went up in flames. The force knocked him off his feet and set Hina into a frenzy. She tried desperately to take flight, but all she could do was flap impotently, screeching at the top of her lungs.
"Whoa! Whoa!" Bolin yelled as he raced around her. "Easy there girl! Easy, easy."
But it was no good, as Hina continued to screech and flap wildly, nearly swiping Bolin into the wall at one point. Flattening against the ground, Bolin managed to avoid the frantic flapping and tried to crawl towards her. Rolling underneath her clawed wings, he tried to stroke her chest to calm her, like he would with Pabu, but this just spooked Hina about a new threat.
"Dark!" Ryuukhan called out, picking himself up. "Placing her in a dark environment helps calm her down!"
"Okay but how-?" Bolin started before he stomped the earth, raising a wall high enough to block the sight of the burning wreck. Not wasting any time, he raised two new walls that towered over Hina, dimming the light from near-day to a faint twilight. To complete his work, Bolin shot out pebbles that broke the street-lights and cast them into a small pocket of near-darkness.
"Great work Bolin!" Ryuukhan said, pulling out the rest of the fish. "Give her some time and she'll calm down. And this will certainly help."
As she gulped down the fish, they heard a yell from a few blocks away. Stepping out of the darkness, Bolin said "I think it came from the northwest. We're pretty close to City Hall so I would check that out."
"Thanks, take care of Hina," Ryuukhan said, racing down the streets.
'That yell, what was it?' he wondered, dreading the answer but refusing to turn back. 'I'll find out soon enough.'

'Yes!' Amon cheered internally, raising his head in triumph. 'The Avatar has been equalized!'
Suddenly, he felt something collide with his head, giving off a loud ping that echoed in his mask. Stumbling back, he felt more objects impact his mask and upper chest. Under the onslaught, he released his grip on the Avatar who simply slumped forward to the floor.
"Who-?" Amon called out, peering through the benches for his attacker. In the dim light, he saw a figure stomp the ground and kick forward, probably an Earthbender. Sure enough, he saw four rocks, about the size of a fist, fly forward. Smirking, he ducked in-between, jumping over the fallen Avatar and racing through the pews.
"I have you!" Amon declared, extending his hand. Feeling the figure's blood racing through their veins, he twisted a clawed hand upwards, levitating them by their neck. Pulling the figure toward him, Amon chuckled as he found his attacker had been a mere boy of ten or eleven winters.
"You've got nerve, boy," Amon whispered, holding him close. "But that's not enough."
Twisting his wrists, he pulled the boy's head backwards, stretching his spine like a contortionist as the boy screamed in pain. Shifting his stance, he slowly stretched the boy's legs to the side, the bones and tendons crackling under the strain. Feebly, the boy twitched his fingers, desperate to do something, but Amon coldly laughed.
"How valiant," Amon admitted. "But now it's-ARGH!"
Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain near his collarbone. Stumbling, he released the boy as he felt for what was happening. Then, the pain moved through his chest, slowly boring through his muscle and sinew. As the pain spread to his lungs, he fell to the floor, an iron taste filling his mouth.
'Blood!' he realized. Shifting his focus inward, he encased the pain in a pocket of his own blood. Inside, he ground the object's progress to a halt just short of penetrating his lung cavity. But soon he felt the object shudder violently, rattling his ribs as it furiously tried to push itself onward. Hardening and thickening the blood clot, he held the object at bay, initiating an intense battle of Bending within his own body as the two objects furiously pushed forward.
The battle did not last long. Soon, the object's shuddering ceased and Amon felt its resistance slowly ebb away. Emboldened, he reached out and pulled out the blood clot with his free hand with a horrible squelching sound. Bending away the blood, he found a pebble, barely larger than his thumb and smooth as a river-stone.
Reaching out once more, he lifted the boy up and bent his head over backwards. Focusing on the boy's hands and arms, he slammed them tight against his torso and pulled him forward. Looking into the boy's bright green eyes, he whispered "Very clever, but you're about a century too young to even think about defeating me."
"Now!" he declared, spinning the boy around. Pinning him to the floor, he grabbed his neck and yelled "Prepare to be equalized!"
"No, you don't!" the Avatar yelled out from behind.
Suddenly, Amon felt a powerful gust of wind fling him forward. As he and the boy tumbled between the benches, the boy grabbed him by the arm and wrapped his legs around Amon's waist. Furious, Amon slammed the boy into the wall, loosening his grip enough to shake him off. Turning toward the Avatar, he saw her gather a whirlwind around her spinning form, the benches shuddering around her. Sweeping her arms, she uprooted the council benches, sending splinters of wood and stone into the air.
'What is she?' he wondered before feeling a strong punch in his gut. Looking down, he saw the boy try to throw him overhead. Collapsing to the floor, Amon laughed as the boy struggled to make any headway. Wrapping his arm around the boy's neck, he pulled him close and grabbed his forehead as the boy reached for his arm. Snatching it, he squeezed hard, making the boy wince in pain.
"No escape this time," Amon whispered, reveling in his vengeance.
Suddenly, his vision turned black as he felt an intense pressure all around his body. For a moment, he thought he had somehow been transported to the bottom of the ocean. But as soon as it came, the pressure suddenly ceased. Stumbling forward, he heard the crashing of waves against stone and smelt the sweet, briny scent of seawater.
'I'm at the docks?!' he wondered. 'But how?! What could do that?!'
"Amon!" someone called out. Turning, he found a crowd of people huddling toward him while his Equalists mecha tanks held the United Forces at bay.
"People of Republic City!" he called out, grateful for the audience. "You see now the true face of the Benders! Oppressors! Violators! Murderers! When you cried out for protection, who came to your rescue? I did! I, Amon, the Equalizer! I and I alone came to your aid! Now join me as we usher in an era of EQUALITY!"
In triumph, he raised his arms high, basking in the people's revelry and awe.
"What is that?!" someone yelled as people began screaming in horror.
Seeing them pointing to his side, he looked and found himself holding a human hand. Beneath his mask his eyes widened in shock as he held it up to find it was not just a hand, but the whole arm, wrapped in blue and white and ending in a perfectly clean scission.
"My arm! My arm!" the boy screamed. Turning, he saw the boy clutching the stump where his right arm should have been.
"Amon, how could you?!" someone yelled.
"He's just a child!"
"Tarrlok was right!"
"Get him!"
Seeing the crowd surge forward, Amon threw the arm aside and turned to flee, but the boy charged forward. Grabbing him by the waist, the boy threw him overhead in a lopsided superplex. Amon went over the edge into the sea, the cold, dark water shocking him to his very bones. Feeling water enter his lungs, Amon instinctively spun his arms, forming a water-spout that launched him into the air, his mask and false scar washed away.
"He's Waterbending?!" someone yelled from below.
"He's a Bender!"
"He lied to us!"
At the docks, he saw the crowd huddling around the boy, one woman wrapping her arms around him as she tried to help him up while one man held his severed arm. Looking at the mainland, he discovered his Equalists were surrounded by the angry crowd, their gloves hanging limply as they frantically looked to him for guidance.
Meanwhile, the mecha tanks were desperately holding their own against the soldiers. One had rammed its electric wire into the ground, sending a jolt into the air that stunned the nearby soldiers as two more surged forward. But as they raised their arms, the soldiers launched large boulders at their chests, forcing them back. Seeing their chance, the soldiers then stomped the ground, opening up massive fissures under their treads and toppling the mecha tanks onto their sides. The mecha tanks tried to right themselves, but a team of soldiers drawing water from the sea reached them first. Encasing the mecha tanks in their element, the Waterbenders froze the shoulder and elbow joints solid, paralyzing the massive machines before funneling the remaining water into the dorsal pipes. After a brief shudder, steam rushed from the vents and pipes as the light from the pilot seats died.
'The Revolution has failed,' Amon realized, disheartened as the soldiers rounded up his men. Meanwhile, he saw a gap open up in the crowd on the docks, as they led the boy away and soldiers moved to take their place.
'No, not yet.' he resolved and sped off on his water-spout. The soldiers opened up with everything they had, but Amon simply sank below the waves, encasing himself in a bubble of air. Bending the water around his pocket, he sped off toward the southern coast, aiming for the inlet that would take him to the southeast border of the United Republic.
'I will continue the Revolution,' he vowed, zealous fury flowing through his veins. 'With every fiber of my being, every drop of my blood, every breath of my spirit, I will continue the Revolution. I will finish what I started here. The Era of Equality will come! And I, Amon, will usher it!'

Bending the water from his clothes, Amon ducked into the underbrush, listening for anyone nearby. Confident that no one was nearby he walked briskly through the trees, though he kept one ear out for trouble. Looking back, he could see military zeppelins hovering over the city while the fleet patrolled the coast.
'No matter,' he snarled inwardly, continuing his way. 'This was…always a possibility. Not one I wanted but one I prepared for. Not quite how I envisioned it happening, but pretty close.'
Coming to a ridge near the mountains, he found a waterfall cascading into a stream that flowed toward Roku District. Bending the water away, he exposed a crevice that he could just barely squeeze into. Covering himself with water, he slipped inside, the sweet smelling moss bringing a small smile to his face before he came into a cave dimly lit by paper lanterns.
'Who'd have thought firefly lamps would be so useful?' he thought, making his way toward the men sitting at the low table.
"It has failed, I take it," Kuan muttered, much to his annoyance.
"A temporary setback, nothing more," Amon replied. "I ran into some…unexpected complications, namely a boy with black hair and green eyes."
"A boy?!" Yichi exclaimed, leaning across the table. "Black hair and green eyes?! Was he with the Avatar?! Was he eleven years old?! Did he fight with fire?!"
"Almost entirely," Amon said, pushing the man back. "But one difference; he fought with rocks. He managed to get one into my chest and nearly took my lungs. Still, the rest was correct."
"Ryuukhan!" Yichi yelled, making everyone cover their ears. "It's him, I know it! When I get my hands on him-"
"Enough!" the fourth man yelled. "I've just about had it with your tirades! Ever since you arrived it's been 'Ryuukhan this' and 'Ryuukhan that'. You're obsessing over an eleven-year-old boy when the police and the military are actively hunting you. Get your head out of your rear and focus on the bigger picture!"
"Well said," Amon commended, relieved to hear some reason. "It is as Kuan surmised. The Revolution has…been postponed. My image was tarnished by a most unexpected and unwelcome surprise, and thus the people abandoned us. Without their support, our forces were no match for the United Forces. No doubt they will have been killed or captured by now."
"But no use crying over rancid blubber," he continued. "We are yet free, and we have scored a most vital victory: the Avatar. I removed her Bending, save for Air, but with only one element she is hardly a threat to us. I have also witnessed our machines of war in action, and while they were most impressive, there are flaws we did not think about, flaws the military used to great advantage. But we can learn from these flaws and improve the designs for the future. Think of this as a…test run. Every design has flaws the engineer, or the leader in this case, did not consider, and the only way to discover and correct those flaws is first-hand experience."
"As the great Sage San Fuzu once said," Amon concluded. "My ears forget, my eyes remember, my hands understand. We have learned much from this Revolution, and these lessons will serve us well but only once we have recovered our strength. The Earth Kingdom, with its rich resources, corrupt officials, and vast size will serve us well. We learn at sunset."
"How are we getting there?" Yichi asked. "On foot?"
"Hardly," Kuan scoffed. "Our esteemed engineer Mr. Sato has already secured us a means of escape, right?"
"Right," Sato said, heading for a large tarp. "This is my latest invention."
Pulling it off, he revealed a bi-wing similar to what they had deployed against the zeppelins but larger, particularly in the cabin and with longer, broader wings. Along with wheels, it featured a mid-sized outrigger like in a canoe. If the bi-wings before were like sparrowkeets, fast and furious, this thing was like a pelican-albatross, big and clunky.
"THAT'S your latest invention?!" Yichi exclaimed, clearly not impressed. "That thing looks like a boat with wings! It won't last us five minutes, let alone a trip around the Earth Kingdom!"
"It's not much to look at," Sato admitted. "And it's quite different from what I normally design. But it has an engine that will make all the difference. The engine does not need gasoline to run, so we don't need to stick to established fuel depots or refilling stations."
"Really?" Yichi drawled. "And just how does this incredible engine work?"
"Gentlemen," Amon said. "Mr. Sato will have plenty of time to explain his latest invention, but we must prepare for our departure."
"Oh no!" Yichi yelled out, his cries echoing off the walls. "My grandfather's dying words were to never ride on strange beasts or strange machines, and this definitely qualifies!"
"Well, in that case," Amon said, closing the distance. "You can stay here and try to take your revenge on Ryuukhan. Though I should warn you, he's the favored son of Republic City and the people will not be merciful to whoever harms their treasured child, as I learned first-hand."
To his surprise, Yichi backed down and asked "How do we get it out?".
"The cave has a larger entrance where the wolf-bats come and go," Mr. Sato replied. "It will be easy for us to get her out. But if we want to get her out on time, we must get started immediately."
"Fine, fine," Yichi fumed, joining Mr. Sato.
"Amon," Kuan whispered, pulling him close. "We might have another problem. Come with me."
Leading Amon to a dark corner, he lifted a board to reveal a girl, barely twelve or so, lying unconscious on a layer of rough hemp. Despite the dim light, they could see bruising on her neck, a black-eye, and bleeding from her mouth. Even so, her wrists and ankles were bound by thick ropes, and a cloth was thrust into her mouth to prevent her from screaming.
"Who do we have here?" Amon asked. "A child that found us out?"
"More than that," Kuan replied. "She was sabotaging our delivery vehicles. We kept getting breakdowns to and from one of our warehouses. Sometimes, it was a tire going flat, or leaking oil, or something else. Once we narrowed down the possible locations, we found her confederate stealing intelligence but while he got away, we nabbed her in the woods."
"He?" Amon repeated, intrigued. "What did he look like?"
"Black hair, blue clothes, about her age," Kuan said. "Or so said our partners when I questioned them. But before I could get more out of them the police showed up, having tracked us through leaking oil."
"I see," Amon said, thinking to himself. 'I wonder if that's the same boy who tried to kill me with that pebble, and whose arm I had in my hand. Coincidence? Or something more?'
"The fact that she could do all that," Amon interjected, drawing Kuan's attention. "Means she knows quite a bit about these machines, or at least was familiar enough with them to covertly sabotage them. Given they were kept secret from everyone until tonight, she must have inferred them from other designs made by Mr. Sato. Doesn't he have a daughter?"
"Two actually," Kuan replied. "His blood-daughter Asami and his adopted one, Xin."
"Well, well, well," Amon said. "It appears we have his adopted daughter then."
"What do we do with her?" Kuan asked.
'Good question,' Amon conceded, going through his options. 'She's adept at sabotaging machines, but I don't know what secrets she could divulge. The safest would be to…dispose of her. A simple blood clot in her skull or heart. Faster than falling asleep. But that would expose my Bloodbending, and if maiming a child could cause such an uproar…'
Turning to Mr. Sato, he asked "What does Mr. Sato know about his daughters?".
"Not much," Kuan replied, clearly confused. "He's been so busy with his inventions that he barely thinks about them. Or eating and drinking for that matter. We've had to FORCE him to take breaks, during which he mostly talks about his work. On occasion he has mentioned his daughters, mostly worrying about them and hoping they understand his decision."
"So he's ignorant about their current status?" Amon asked, smiling to himself.
"Apparently so," Kuan answered.
"Well then," Amon said, smiling widely. "Get back to work. I'll…handle this."

Author's Note: Well here you are, Gerginscy, Harry saving the day, with the help of Bolin, and Korra, and the police, and the military, and the people of Republic City. I wanted to show him growing stronger, especially compared to his earlier showings against the Tong, but Amon is still WAY too powerful to be taken down by an eleven-year-old boy. Here, Amon was mostly taken down by unexpected developments rather than Harry's innate skill or power as Amon is just too strong, too skilled, and too experienced for that. Also, I wanted to show Harry's still tied to the Wizarding World as he's still a Wizard masquerading as a Bender. But while his Potter-verse magic did greatly help him via Apparition, it also came at a cost: his arm. So he's got a choice: further develop this new power and hope it works out (like he doesn't lose his head, or worse, next time), or shy away from it for fear of the risks.
Also, I would love your feedback on one thing: what should I do with Xin? I really don't want to kill her off, as she's already gone through a lot, and that feels like the whole Spiderman-Gwen storyline. But I'm having a hard time finding a good place for her as a character; I wanted to make it so she's more insightful about the world behind the scenes, as someone who's experienced that dark side personally but I'm not sure if I'm succeeding in that regard. In the past I've done polls for specific questions which seemed to work pretty well, so stay alert if I do that in the future.
Lastly, I'm planning to revisit the Potter-verse for the Philosopher's Stone Arc. Obviously I won't be reusing the canonical traps (pretty convenient how they perfectly matched the Golden Trio's assets) so they'll be set to the Bronze Quintet (Neville, Hannah, Susan, Justin, and Ernie) instead. I have a few ideas for some of the challenges, but others are harder to figure out, namely History (other than a trivia session), Charms, and Transfiguration.
As always, I appreciate your feedback and your patience. I hope you had a wonderful time.
