Episode 3 - Three Men and a Baby

The three men - Barry, Gareth and Sid - are hardly speaking, and the nerves get Barry to accidentally poison himself. Later on, as they retire inside a helpful villager's house, it is revealed that Barry was just trying to make himself useful and gain back their trust. He kept thinking about how they must see him, and the thought made his nervous enough to pick the wrong plants and accidentally poison himself.

This makes Sid view him sympathetically, but Gareth isn't buying Barry's story. Sid warms up to Barry and attempts to teach him the basics of being a good person. They have a few issues surrounding that - Barry keeps unintentionally spreading misfortune (just by being clumsy). Sid, despite having to put out fires every day, tells Gareth that he doesn't mind Barry - he's just happy to teach someone something. He thinks Barry needs him, and this new teacher-student dynamic makes him feel less useless. As a result, the group decide to make it deeper inside the creepy forest (they failed before due to Barry's poisoning), but they stop once they feel something move in their backpack. Turns out, Isabella's kid cousin was hiding inside it! At this point, they are too far away from Valencia to turn back - and if they do, there's a high likelihood that they will kill Gareth for real this time.

While the adults discuss what to do with the little boy, it is revealed that Barry is actually still pretty evil and is intent on hitching a ride to the Dark One's tower so he can steal his power for himself. Barry's background story is shown briefly; a poor boy stolen in his childhood by the King's men as a means to pay off a debt, he is saved by Wormwood who saves him on a whim and declares that he must pay off his debt by being his assistant. Swapping Masters again and again, this internal strife of feeling like a follower even to himself is Barry's biggest shame and he wishes he could be unique and beloved. But since he has seen Wormwood's power, he is convinced that this is the only way. And so, despite being clumsy, dense, a giant coward and an all around terrible henchman, he wants to tag along on Sid and Gareth's Heroes Journey so he can steal the Dark One's scepter and finally become "Someone Great".
