CHAPTER 2
CELESTIAL DECEPTION
The atmosphere in the chamber grew tense as the Elders regarded Elisabeth and David with a mixture of suspicion and concern. The regal figure, their leader, stepped forward, his eyes piercing through the veil of uncertainty.
"Our society thrives on harmony and balance," the Elder declared. "The knowledge you seek is guarded, for the consequences of its misuse could be catastrophic. Your presence here disrupts the equilibrium we have meticulously maintained across the cosmos."
Elisabeth, feeling a weight of responsibility, attempted to convey the sincerity of their quest. "We never intended to disturb your way of life. We only sought answers to the mysteries that bind our existence, mysteries that your kind seemed to hold."
The Elders conferred silently, their alien expressions inscrutable. It was clear that Elisabeth and David had unintentionally stumbled upon a well-guarded secret, one that the Engineers were not eager to share.
After a prolonged silence, the regal Elder spoke again. "You must understand the delicacy of the knowledge you seek. To unveil the truths that lie beyond the fabric of creation is to confront the very essence of the universe. It is not a path to be tread lightly."
Elisabeth nodded solemnly, acknowledging the gravity of their situation. "We only wish to learn, to understand our place in this vast cosmos. If there are dangers, we are prepared to face them with caution and respect."
The Elders exchanged glances once more, their decision communicated through an unspoken consensus. "Very well," the regal Elder conceded. "We shall share with you the knowledge you seek. But be warned, the revelations may reshape your understanding of existence."
With a wave of the Elder's hand, a holographic display materialized in the center of the chamber. It depicted the cosmic tapestry of the universe, with swirling galaxies and celestial bodies interconnected by ethereal threads.
"The threads you see represent the delicate balance we maintain," the Elder explained. "Each thread signifies the existence and evolution of a civilization. We, the Engineers, have carefully guided the development of sentient life across the galaxies."
Elisabeth and David watched in awe as the holographic display illustrated the intricate dance of civilizations, their rise and fall woven into the cosmic fabric. However, a shadow loomed over the display, a darkness that spread like an insidious stain.
"The balance is fragile," the Elder continued. "For every civilization that flourishes, there are those that succumb to their own hubris or external threats. It is our duty to ensure that the forces of creation and destruction remain in equilibrium."
As the holographic display unfolded, Elisabeth sensed a growing unease. The dark stain seemed to concentrate on specific threads, leading to the inevitable demise of entire civilizations. It became evident that the Engineers, in their pursuit of balance, were orchestrating the downfall of certain societies.
"We intervene when necessary," the Elder admitted, his voice carrying a heavy burden. "But our actions, though guided by the noble intention of preserving cosmic balance, are not without consequences. The threads we manipulate carry the weight of countless lives."
Elisabeth felt a mix of disbelief and horror. The benevolent image she had held of the Engineers shattered, replaced by the realization that their quest for balance was a double-edged sword, cutting down civilizations in the name of a higher purpose.
"Why?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Why manipulate the destinies of entire civilizations? What purpose does this balance serve?"
The regal Elder regarded her with a solemn gaze. "The cosmic balance is a reflection of the inherent chaos within the universe. Left unchecked, chaos would consume all, plunging creation into eternal darkness. Our intervention, though painful, is a necessary sacrifice to preserve the order of the cosmos."
David, ever analytical, spoke with a hint of skepticism. "But at what cost? Is the preservation of cosmic balance worth the suffering inflicted upon innocent civilizations?"
The Elder's expression remained unchanged, a mask of cosmic wisdom. "It is a moral dilemma that transcends your understanding. Our duty is to safeguard the greater whole, even if it requires us to bear the burden of moral ambiguity."
As the revelation settled, Elisabeth grappled with conflicting emotions. The noble image she had once held of the Engineers was tainted by the revelation of their dark secret. The cosmic architects, once revered, now stood as arbiters of fate, manipulating the destinies of entire worlds.
The Elders, sensing the weight of their disclosure, regarded Elisabeth and David with a silent understanding. "You must now decide," the regal Elder proclaimed. "Will you accept the knowledge and bear witness to the cosmic balance, or will you turn away, leaving this truth to fade into the cosmic tapestry?"
Elisabeth exchanged a glance with David, the unspoken understanding between them lingering in the air. They had sought answers, but the truth they discovered was a moral quandary that tested the very essence of their humanity.
"We will bear witness," Elisabeth declared, her voice steady. "But we will also carry the responsibility of this knowledge and strive to forge a path that transcends the shadows of manipulation."
The Elders, though inscrutable in their ancient wisdom, nodded in acknowledgment. The holographic display faded, leaving Elisabeth and David standing in the chamber of revelations.
As they left the presence of the Elders, Elisabeth couldn't shake the weight of the newfound knowledge. The cosmic balance, a grand tapestry woven by the Engineers, bore witness to both creation and destruction. It was a reality that demanded introspection and action, for Elisabeth and David carried with them not just the secrets of the universe but also the responsibility to shape their own destiny amidst the cosmic dance of existence.
"There's still more questions I need to ask," Elisabeth mutters.
"Let's give them time to get accustomed to our presence, we wouldn't want to disturb the peace and cause an outburst." David says, then showing Elisabeth a photo from a table he's holding.
"You wouldn't dare.." She gasps, he face fuming with distraught and anger...
David smirks, fiddling with the tablet. "I want to know what this is first before we leave, Are these ampules the destruction they use to bring down civilizations?"
"I don't want to know David, if you threaten them, we may not have a home to go back to."
"Maybe they won't have one either if they don't play along, besides, we don't know what this dark stain is and how these other civilizations are connected." David continues as he swipes across a few pictures, and a word that shouts out to him that is as mystifying as the Engineers.
"What's that you're so enthralled by?" Shaw takes the tablet and stares at the picture, whispering the word that seems engraved into a stone pillar, showing a being with a large cranial skull with piercing eyes and three indents with a geometric shape on its shoulder resembling a turret.
"Yautja..."
