The sun hung high in the sky as the Rising Tide sailed north toward the Kingdom of Arlington. The warmth in the air forced Melody to reconsider her choice of attire. Nearby, Jim stood at attention as she sought refuge in the shade, fanning herself. The voyage was proving to be the tedious affair she had feared, with Jim remaining silent unless directly addressed. Despite having a book in hand, Melody yearned for a genuine adventure instead of reading about one. As she cast a glance at Jim, curiosity crept into her thoughts.
Jim stood in the shade, watching over Melody. He couldn't fathom why a bodyguard was necessary on a royal ship with a trusted crew, but orders were orders. This marked the final test in his four-year training with the Intergalactic Space Academy, a journey that began when he was just 17. Blending in with the local population and surviving without advanced technology were his challenges. A communicator was allowed solely for emergencies.
Sailing for merely an hour, he found himself bored already. In his youth, he might have fashioned a solar surfer from spare parts and ventured off for fun. But now, with greater responsibilities and the risk of jeopardizing his scholarship, such antics were out of the question. His goal was to build a better life for himself and his mother, Sarah, who managed the Benbow Inn back on Montressor. The inn, initially destroyed by pirates seeking Treasure Planet's map, had been rebuilt with the coins Silver managed to save. However, those funds were long gone, and Jim needed to secure his place in the academy to provide for his mother. Yet, he couldn't shake the yearning for the thrilling adventures of sailing on the RLS Legacy.
His reverie ended abruptly when he realized Melody was nowhere in sight.
Regaining composure, he scanned the deck, eyes sharp. Then, a peculiar shadow crossed the wooden boards at his feet, and looking up, he spotted the princess swinging from the ship's ropes!
It took Jim but a moment to decide how to handle the situation.
Five minutes earlier...
Melody, resigned to the monotony, noticed Jim's distant gaze. Sneaking away, she hid behind crates, shedding her heavy skirts and bustle. Clad in a tan corset and linen pantaloons, she ascended into the rigging, challenging herself to reach new heights before Jim noticed her absence. The wind played with the sails and ropes, and Melody embraced the challenge. Leaping from the rigging to a swinging rope, she felt the exhilaration of free-fall, repeating the maneuver until she neared the crow's nest, cautiously avoiding the lookout.
Melody paused in the upper rigging, the steady sway of the ship beneath her feet creating a rhythmic dance with the wind. The tantalizing pull of the blue pearl within her locket called out to her like a secret melody. With a sense of curiosity and a dash of trepidation, she decided to explore the enigmatic nature of the precious orb.
She carefully cradled the locket in her hand, the metallic surface cool against her fingertips. She popped it open to examine her grandfather's curious gift. Melody hesitated for a moment before gently pressing her finger against the smooth surface of the blue pearl within. As her skin made contact, an unexpected surge of energy emanated from the pearl, instantly enveloping her in a dazzling glow.
The force of the wave caught her off guard, sending a shockwave through her body. Melody gasped as the brilliance of the energy momentarily blinded her. The ship's rigging became a chaotic swirl of ropes, and her surroundings blurred into a dizzying dance. Desperately, she reached out for support, but her fingers found only the air.
The world tilted, and her descent began. In a whirlwind of fabric and disarray, Melody tumbled through the rigging. Panic seized her as the ship's ropes threatened to ensnare her. She reached out instinctively, attempting to grasp anything to break her fall. It was a chaotic dance between gravity and her desperate attempts to regain balance.
As she careened downward, the ship's rigging transformed into a maze of obstacles. The air whistled past her ears, drowning out the distant sounds of the ship. Just when it seemed like a collision with the hard deck was inevitable, fate intervened. Melody's fall was abruptly halted by a fortuitous entanglement in the very ropes that had moments ago seemed like a perilous threat.
Breathless and disoriented, she clung to the rigging, heart pounding in her chest. The blue pearl was still safely within her locket, held in place by some unknown energy. It pulsed with an ethereal glow, as if responding to the unexpected surge of energy. Melody couldn't help but feel that this mysterious gift held more secrets than she could fathom.
Jim's voice, tinged with a mix of concern and amusement, cut through the air, startling Melody from her bewildered reverie.
"Princess, what in the world were you doing up there?" he exclaimed, his eyes wide with surprise.
Startled, Melody turned her head to find Jim ascending the ropes with the agility of a seasoned sailor. He reached her side in moments, his strong arms reaching out to help her untangle from the web of ropes that had momentarily saved her from a more disastrous fall.
"I, uh, was just enjoying the view," she stammered, attempting to regain some semblance of composure.
Jim arched an eyebrow, skepticism evident in his expression. "Enjoying the view, you say? Well, it looked more like you were trying to test the laws of gravity from where I was standing."
Melody chuckled nervously, her cheeks flushing with a mix of embarrassment and amusement. "Perhaps I got a bit carried away."
"That's one way to put it," Jim quipped, a bemused smile playing on his lips. "And, forgive my forwardness, but where, pray tell, are your outer garments? It's a little unladylike to go running around half-dressed."
Caught off guard by his straightforward observation, Melody glanced down at her unconventional attire, forgetting she had shed her heavier skirts and bustle earlier. A mischievous glint sparkled in her eyes as she responded, "Well, a princess should be able to enjoy a little adventure without the hindrance of a cumbersome gown, don't you think?"
Jim's laughter echoed through the rigging as he finished assisting her to fully disentangle herself. "Adventure, indeed. You've got a unique way of finding it, Princess Melody."
As they stood together in the rigging, the ocean breeze carrying the scent of salt and adventure, Melody couldn't help but feel a newfound camaraderie with the young lieutenant.
"I suppose I should try to convince you to come back down," Jim suggested, a playful glint in his eyes.
Melody flashed him a mischievous grin. "You'll have to catch me first!" With that, she swung past Jim on a nearby rope, the wind tousling her hair as she sailed through the air.
"Why, you little minx!" Jim feigned offense at her abrupt departure, his laughter blending with the rhythmic creaking of the ship. Determined not to be outdone, he swung into action, chasing after her with agile ease.
Melody climbed as fast as she could, her laughter echoing through the rigging. The ship swayed gently beneath them, responding to the playful dance taking place in its elevated realm. Reaching the end of the rigging, Melody stole a glance backward, only to find Jim closing in on her with determined strides. She had led him to a point where escape seemed impossible, and he knew it. Or so he thought...
With a sudden burst of energy and a twinkle in her eye, Melody executed a daring move. Instead of swinging downward as anticipated, she vaulted herself upward, catching a rope that hung parallel to the mast. It was a move that defied expectations and left Jim momentarily suspended mid-air, his momentum carrying him forward.
"Smooth move, Princess!" Jim called out, a mix of surprise and admiration in his voice. The unexpected maneuver had caught him off guard, and he couldn't help but appreciate her agility.
Melody chuckled as she perched on her new vantage point. "Well, I did say you'd have to catch me, Lieutenant."
Jim, recovering from the unexpected turn of events, grinned up at her. "Fair enough, Princess. Consider yourself caught." With a playful salute, he began to climb the rigging, determined to join her on this impromptu perch.
As Jim neared Melody on the elevated rope, he couldn't help but wear a triumphant grin. "Looks like I've won, Princess!"
"Not even close!" Melody's voice rang out with exhilaration, and before Jim could fathom her next move, she propelled herself off the ship, embracing the freefall towards the waves below.
Time seemed to freeze for Jim. A surge of fear gripped him, not just for Melody's safety but also for the consequences of his actions. If any harm befell the princess, he could face severe consequences, jeopardizing not only his job but potentially his freedom. Yet, amidst the frozen seconds, his instincts and duty overpowered his apprehensions.
Without second-guessing, Jim hurled himself after Melody, slicing through the air to reach the ocean's surface. The waters closed over him as he descended, the world reduced to the muted symphony of the sea. In the underwater realm, he frantically scanned for any sign of Melody. The weight of responsibility bore heavily on him as he called out her name, the sound muffled by the embrace of the ocean.
Melody, in her element beneath the waves, observed Jim's descent with a mix of amusement and anticipation. She waited for the splash, the telltale sign of his immersion into her impromptu escapade. As Jim's form emerged beneath the water, his eyes locked onto hers with a blend of concern and relief. The underwater world seemed to hold its breath as they acknowledged each other's presence in this liquid realm.
Emerging from the sea, Jim and Melody shared a breathless laughter, their soaked forms testament to the impromptu plunge into the ocean's embrace. The ship, now a distant silhouette against the vastness of the water, seemed almost surreal in its detachment.
"You...are going to be the death of me!" Jim swept his drenched bangs from his face, earning him an additional burst of laughter from Melody.
"Oh, come on, Jim! Live a little!" she teased, playfully splashing him.
"Yeah, yeah. Just do me a favor and warn me the next time you plan on pulling a stunt like that." Jim retaliated, returning a playful squirt of water from his clasped hands that elicited another giggle.
"Aye aye, captain!" Melody mock-saluted before disappearing beneath the waves.
Amused, Jim followed her as she swam back towards the ship. Melody effortlessly ascended the rope ladder, the wooden rungs supporting her ascent. Jim, burdened by the weight of his waterlogged uniform, ascended more slowly. Eventually, they reached the ship's railing and pulled themselves aboard, only to face the stern presence of Captain Howell.
Jim immediately assumed a rigid posture, saluting his captain. At Jim's side, Melody looked slightly apologetic, ready to cover for their escapade.
"Lieutenant Hawkins, is there a reason you and the princess are both soaking wet? Furthermore, I must inquire about her attire, or rather, lack thereof." Captain Howell folded his arms, awaiting an explanation.
"It was my fault, Captain Howell. I leaned too far over the railing and fell overboard. Jim jumped in and saved me," Melody intervened. "As for my clothing, I had to remove my skirts as they became too heavy for me to swim in."
"Very well, you are free to return to your cabin and retrieve clean clothes, your majesty," the captain bowed as Melody made her exit. Glancing back at Jim, she silently mouthed the words "I'm sorry" before hurrying back to her cabin.
"As for you, Lieutenant, come see me in my quarters immediately after retrieving some dry clothing for yourself. I won't have you dripping all over my office."
"Yes sir!" Jim saluted and marched obediently back to his own quarters, leaving the ship's deck to the lingering scent of saltwater and the fading echoes of their unconventional adventure.
Henley Howell sat behind his mahogany desk, scrutinizing the expansive map laid out before him. If the weather held and they encountered no obstacles, the Rising Tide would reach its destination in about 3 weeks, possibly sooner if they pressed on through the night. A deliberate knock echoed through the room.
"Come in," he beckoned.
Jim entered the room, now clad in a clean, dry uniform. The captain rose from his seat, signaling Jim to approach.
"Did you enjoy your swim?" Howell inquired, his gaze stern.
"Sir, it's not what you think -" Jim began to explain, but Howell raised a hand, halting him.
"Jim, I like you. You have great potential. It would sadden me deeply if you were to waste the opportunity you have landed." The captain's expression softened. "I know you intended no harm, and I also know that Princess Melody can be a handful. Just take control of the situation next time, yes?"
"Absolutely, sir. Is that all?" Jim inquired.
"Actually, that isn't the only reason I wanted to speak with you. Please, have a seat," Howell gestured to the wooden chair in front of his desk as he settled into his own.
"What is it?" Jim seated himself as Howell retrieved a small tablet from his desk drawer.
"About twenty minutes ago, the energy readings on my scanner went off the chart," he tapped the screen, projecting a glowing green hologram above his desk. The line graph remained steady for a moment before abruptly spiking and then returning to baseline.
"What do you think could have caused that?" Jim leaned forward, studying the chart intently. "I've rarely seen readings like this before; definitely not here on Earth."
"Whatever it was, it was very close. I might even venture to guess that it's on the ship with us." Howell swiped the graph away and stowed the tablet. "I want you to keep a sharp eye out for anything peculiar, you understand?"
"Of course, sir," Jim thought back to the peculiar sight in Melody's locket, the blue wave of energy. It couldn't be, but it would explain the energy spike. He decided to keep this information to himself until he could verify what he saw.
"Jim? You look as though you have something to say," the captain pressed.
"No, sir, just trying to remember the last time I saw something that powerful," he lied.
"Very well, you are dismissed," the captain stood up. "And don't forget what I said; keep your wits about you."
"Yes, sir," Jim saluted and exited the captain's quarters, contemplating the mysterious energy spike and the secrets concealed within the ship's confines.
Melody waited a few steps outside the captain's cabin, dressed in a simple navy blue frock with her hair cascading down, drying in the afternoon sun. Spotting Jim, she hurriedly approached him, her expression filled with concern.
"You didn't get into trouble, did you? I'm so sorry if you did; I didn't mean for us to get caught," she rambled on.
"Nah, just a slap on the wrist. It's fine," he reassured her.
"Are you sure? I just feel terrible about the whole thing. I never should have goaded you into chasing me," she admitted, glancing down at her feet.
"Hey, believe me, you didn't make me do anything I didn't want to do," he assured her.
"So...you wanted to chase me?" She looked back up at him, her cheeks slightly flushed.
"That came out wrong!" he rubbed the back of his head awkwardly.
"Right...well, I still want to make it up to you. Come with me!" she exclaimed, grabbing his arm and pulling him along.
"Where are we going?" he asked, following her quickly.
"It's a surprise!" she grinned as she led him below the deck.
They reached the empty galley, and Melody directed Jim to take a seat at one of the tables. She skillfully gathered a tin plate and a couple of drinking chalices, opening barrels to reveal a handful of crackers and dried meat. With a final touch, she found a bottle of wine and poured their chalices halfway.
"I present to you, your dinner!" she announced with a flourish, taking a seat across the table.
"Well, thank you very much, Chef Melody," Jim remarked, impressed by the modest yet thoughtful meal.
"Dig in! Swimming works up a good appetite, so let me know if you want more," she encouraged, picking up a cracker.
"Do you go swimming often?" he asked, reaching for a piece of salted meat.
"As often as I can. I love being out in the ocean; it's always felt like home to me," she shared, taking a sip of wine. "For the first 12 years of my life though, I wasn't allowed near the ocean."
"Oh yeah? Why was that?" he inquired.
"My parents were paranoid that I would drown or get eaten by a shark," she answered carefully, not revealing the true reason but staying close to the truth.
"Ah, I can sorta relate. My dad wasn't around, but my mother was overprotective of me. She wouldn't let me do anything fun, so I often got myself into trouble surfing behind her back."
"Surfing?" Melody cocked her head in confusion.
"Oh, yeah uh, surfing the waves, you know? It's a new sport," he lied, realizing he narrowly avoided explaining solar surfing.
"Sounds exciting! Maybe you can teach me someday," her eyes sparkled with delight.
"Yeah, maybe," Jim agreed, though uncertainty lingered. She's probably going to be engaged and married within the next month. He abruptly stood up from the table.
"I uh, I should really be getting to bed now. Thank you again for dinner; it was delicious," he patted his stomach.
"You're welcome," she smiled softly. "Thank you for entertaining me today; it was fun."
"Yeah," he stood in the doorway awkwardly. "Well, goodnight princess."
"Goodnight Jimothy," she answered. He turned back with a confused look on his face.
"I told you to call me Melody," she laughed. "I hate titles."
"Fair enough," he smiled. "Goodnight Melody." And with that, he left her alone in the galley.
"Oh, by the way, Melody, there's something I wanted to ask you about," he hesitated for a moment. "Earlier, when you were up in the rigging, I saw this strange blue wave of energy around you. Did you... feel anything unusual?"
Melody's heart skipped a beat at Jim's question, and she hesitated for a moment before responding.
"Oh, that? Well, it's a bit embarrassing," she chuckled nervously. "I have this old family heirloom, a pendant. My grandmother said it was enchanted, but I never really believed her. Today, I thought I'd test it out and see if there was any truth to her stories. Turns out, it just gave off a weird glow. Silly, right?"
Jim regarded her with a curious expression, the memory of the blue wave of energy vivid in his mind. "An enchanted pendant, huh? That's interesting."
"Yeah, it's nothing special, really," Melody replied, offering a reassuring smile. "Probably just a trick of the light or something. Anyway, I should get going. Goodnight, Jim."
"Goodnight, Melody," Jim responded, though a lingering doubt gnawed at him as he watched her leave.
