"Skulduggery, I don't know if I can go on…" Valkyrie Cain looked up at her partner, Skulduggery Pleasant with tears in her eyes.

"You are strong, Valkyrie. You can handle this. You've been through far worse things than this."

Valkyrie shook her head. "My bottom has been reached. I am exhausted both mentally and physically… Ever since we visited that Greymire Asylum, my psyche has been destroyed. I see and hear people who are no longer alive, they talk to me… I can't focus my thoughts… I have mood swings from hell, and you've seen what happens when I'm threatened… I've been on the verge of killing people for little things, things that I wouldn't normally give a damn about…"

Skulduggery put his hands on Valkyrie's shoulders and looked her in the eyes. "I'll say it one more time, Valkyrie, and this time I want you to listen to me. You are strong. You've been through a lot and unfortunately, I've been a part of those problems and haven't helped you every time you've needed me. We are all human Valkyrie, and we make mistakes. It is how we choose to live with these mistakes that shapes us. You can either let them take over you or you can learn to live with them.

Think about everything you've been through. Think of all the times you were about to give up but got back up. You are not a person who gives up when things are hard. You fight, Valkyrie. You are a fighter who does not let others step over you. You fight back and show everyone that you are a force to be reckoned with."

Valkyrie said nothing, just looked Skulduggery in the eyes. She let the tears flow freely down her cheeks. She sobbed but made no effort to wipe away the tears. She had no energy left. All she wanted to do was sleep for days, maybe even weeks to try to regain some of the strength and drive she once had had.

"You know I'm always here for you when you need me, right? It doesn't matter what you have done or said, I will always support you. You can never disappoint me, Valkyrie. You could never hurt me in a way that would make me turn my back on you. You never have to fear that I will abandon you. We are soul mates, you and me. We are meant to be together through both the bad and the good."

Valkyrie smiled a small smile that made her face relax and Skulduggery caught a small glimpse of the Valkyrie he got to know so many years ago when she was a young girl of 12 years old. He wished she could smile a little more often, but he also understood why she didn't do it as often anymore. She had been through so much in such a short time and she hadn't had time to grieve and digest everything that had happened to her.

Valkyrie snorted and crossed her arms. "I'm not going to hug myself."

"You'll feel a lot better afterwards, I promise."

Valkyrie shook her head. "I'm not going to do it anyway."

Skulduggery grabbed Valkyrie's arms and wrapped them around her. "There you go. Doesn't it feel much better now?"

Valkyrie gave Skulduggery a look that could kill before she clenched one fist and punched him in the shoulder.

"Ouch! Why did you do that?"

"Because you are stupid."

"I am not. I'm just trying to help you."

Valkyrie looked at Skulduggery for a few seconds before laughing and wrapping her arms around him. She let her head settle against his chest before taking a deep breath and drawing Skulduggery's scent into her nostrils. She felt herself start to relax and a smile could be seen on her lips. "Thank you, Skulduggery for being my friend and partner."

"I wouldn't have it any other way, Valkyrie. Until the end."

"Until the end."
