AN: Okay I'm finally back with a new chapter, I've sort of made it a new years resolution to update this story more this year than I did before, so on with the chapter.
#SuperWho?
It was morning in the city of Metropolis as Kara Danvers aka Supergirl of the superhero team known as 'The Defenders' was sleeping peacefully in her bed until she was awoken by her alarm clock which played the news and she then smashed at the same time the reporter mentioned Superman. Groaning Kara then proceeded to get ready for school but on her way she saw ads and posters promoting her cousins heroic reputation much to her annoyance.
Once Kara finally arrived at the school she noticed her Defenders teammate Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Solider lounging by his motorcycle reading a newspaper but once she spotted her cousin on the front page she then swiped the paper out of his hands and tore it up out of rage.
"Um, I was reading that." Bucky said annoyed and confused.
"Sorry, it's just that I can't stand hearing about superman constantly." Kara explained
"I've always wondered are you guys related in anyway?" Bucky asked.
"Cousins" Kara answered
"Ah, feeling stuck in the shadow of a family member, classic issue, come on your pretty awesome when fighting crime and saving people two." Bucky said with support causing the Kryptonian girl to slightly smile.
"Thanks Bucky," Kara responded as the two walked into the school " It's the fact that he gets more attention from the press than I do makes me feel like the biggest loser in the world." As the two walked into the halls they then noticed the football teams water boy, Garth, with his head wedged into the underarm of a boy who was physically fit with black hair cut in the shape of a buzzcut wearing a white tank top, camouflage jeans and grey boots. "Okay second biggest." Kara said seeing Garths predicament.
The other boy than released him from his under arm as Garth gagged before passing out. "Wow you set a new record Garth puts you on the 'Creels toughest victims' list." The boy taunted before walking away laughing.
"My cousin is lucky though, that Carl Creel makes him seem like a noble gentleman." Kara said referring to the bully
"Yeah, makes sense he's captain of the wrestling team, because with his arrogance, he's like a teenage Randy Savage." Bucky joked but Kara just stood there with a confused look.
"Randy Savage?"
Still confused
"Macho Man"
nothing
"Oohh Yeeaahhh?"
At this point Bucky just gave up as it seemed clear that she had no Idea what he was talking about. "Oh, come on! How can a rock & roll fan like you not know anything about the 80's?!"
Shaking off the topic Kara got back to her problem "Anyway, I need to get people to notice Supergirl, and I think I know how."
In the office of the school newspaper officially titled 'The Daily Planetoid' the head of the paper Lois Lane was typing the latest issue on her computer and getting updates from her staff, two of which were Bucky and Kara's teammates Jessica Cruz and Amadeus Cho.
"Olsen! Where are my photos?! Cruz Cho, How's the Enviro-beat Colum going?" Lois asked seriously
"Almost done Lois." Jess answered
"Good, Olsen deadlines in five! I knew I should've hired that Parker kid." Lois said the last part to herself before her laptop was closed by Kara.
"Why are you writing about him in the school newspaper?!" Kara demanded showing Lois the paper.
"It's a legitimate story and I'm a legitimate reporter, now who's got a pencil?" Lois asked causing Bucky to raise an eyebrow.
"You have seen your hair right?" Bucky asked confused
"There are way more things to write about besides Superman." Kara defended
"Oh, that reminds me can I see that paper? You tore mine up before I could finish reading the sports section." Bucky asked before Kara handed him the paper.
"What if I told you there was another hero out there hmm?" Kara asked smugly.
"Of Course...Captain America!" Lois said making Kara even more frustrated.
"NOO! Supergirl!" Kara said more annoyed.
"Super who?" Lois asked
"Supergirl?" Kara asked
"Eh, if this supergirl of yours did anything front page worthy she'd be there, there has been talk about this guy with a robot arm, who might have potential I think his name is 'The Summer Mercenary' or something."
"*cough* Winter Solider *cough*" Bucky coughed correcting Lois.
Kara just grabbed all the pencils out of Lois' hair and crushed them before walking away.
Bucky followed her after he noticed Lois' hair "Oh, so that's why you- okay bye."
Later in chemistry class Kara was pouring various chemicals together which made her classmates nervous because at the same time she was still ranting about Superman. "'Sounds like a reread to me.' Ugh what does she know?" Kara said imitating Lois As Karen tried to stop her from messing up their Chemistry project. "If anyone is a reread it's him I was 12 when when uncle Jor-El and aunt Lara had him for pete's sake I used to babysit him!"
"Okay Kara maybe you should let Karen handle the chemicals." Sam suggested
"Really? Wow, no wonder you're so mad." Babs said understanding Kara's issue.
"You know Kara I know what it's like to be a victim of the news, back in New York This paper I used to work for called 'The Daily Bugle' used to accuse me of being a menace even though I saved the editor a few times." Peter supported.
"At least they mentioned you in the paper!" Kara said pouring random chemicals causing them to explode.
Bucky coughed from the smoke before speaking "Kara listen I understand how you feel. and I may have a solution, it may seem silly but it might work, maybe try talking to superman about how you feel ."
"What are you talking about?" Kara asked skeptically.
"Well, I actually experienced a similar situation before." Bucky explained
"Oh, you mean back when you were Captain America's sidekick?" Kara asked
"Apprentice thank you, and yes, you see when I first joined Cap in action we made a good team but after awhile he got more attention while was treated more like a supporting character in his life, pretty soon I started to feel like he was holding me back and decided to go solo. One night the city held a celebration ceremony for him and before he made his speech I reluctantly shared my feelings with him and told him my plans and, to my surprise he understood and respected my decision and wished me good luck not only that but during his speech he even gave me credit and I got a standing ovation. So you see what I mean Kara?" Bucky asked
"Yeah, I do ... I need to do something so epic that everyone notices me and forgets about him!" Kara declared causing Bucky's eyebrows to raise.
"Did you not hear my story?"
"Thanks Bucky, I need to get started right now." Kara said before leaving.
"Poor my heart out and she just does her own thing." Bucky grumbled as he followed her.
Kara wasn't the only one jealous of the man of steel, after school Carl Creel had returned home to his room which was filled with dumbbells, punching bags, medals and trophies as well as posters of his idol, a professional wrestler named 'Bonesaw McGraw'. Creel was currently furious due to the fact that people were more focused on Superman's latest save than his recent win for the wrestling team. "Superman, everyone thinks what he does is newsworthy when they should focus on an incredible athlete such as me!" Creel went to a chest that was hidden under his bed and opened it. "I'll show them." He said with an evil grin as he put his hand into the chest then his arm turned to what looked like steel.
The next day, in the city Supergirl and Winter Solider were covered in dirt and leaves as they failed to help get the former recognized.
"So we tried stopping robberies, catching runaway busses and rescuing people from fires, and yet you couldn't get any of it on video!" Supergirl said blaming her teammate.
"Well I'm sorry I can't keep up with an alien girl who can't keep still for one shot." Winter Solider defended showing her the footage on his phone which barley featured her as she was moving so fast, not to mention he was also trying to assist her.
"Okay, fair point but hey we did a bunch of heroic acts maybe someone saw us." Supergirl said optimistically. Just then they heard applause thinking it was someone acknowledging their heroic deeds but then realized they were actually cheering for Superman who had just rescued a kitten from a tree, the hero then bowed with gratitude for they're appreciation before flying off. Kara was now more furious than ever "ALRIGHT THAT"S IT!" She shouted before Grabbing Winter Solider and flying off to confront her cousin.
They then caught up to him on a rooftop "Hey, Kal!" Supergirl called
"Supergirl ? What are you doing here aren't you supposed to be in school?" Superman asked with a little taunt in his voice.
"It's Saturday." Supergirl said more annoyed than offended.
"And who's he? Your boyfriend?" Superman asked gesturing to Winter Solider making them both blush.
"Uh, i-it doesn't matter who he is!" Supergirl yelled.
"Didn't have to use those exact words." Winter Solider said a little offended.
"Anyway, I'm here to tell you to back off!" Supergirl said with an attempt to intimidate him.
"Back off?" Superman responded with a raised eyebrow.
"Yeah, for months I've been trying to get recognized for my hero work, but you just come out here and take the whole spotlight!" Supergirl called him out
"Hey I'm a real hero because of my experience, being the older one at all." Superman taunted
"Hey, I babysat you when we were kids!" Supergirl shot back.
While the two cousins continued arguing Winter Solider heard screaming and crashing noises, he then looked into the distance and saw a hulking figure wielding a wrecking ball at the civilians. "Uh, guys?" he said pointing to the chaos, but the cousins were too focused on the argument which turned into a physical fight. "Ugh, I'll do it myself." Winter Solider said as he went to handle the villain himself.
Winter Solider then went to the figure which was a boy with no shirt, striped pants and his arms and the side of his face was covered in metal, the same shade as the wrecking ball he was wielding. "Well, if it isn't the 'Spring Commando'." the villain taunted with the Wrong name.
"It's 'Winter Solider' what is so hard about it?" He said annoyed.
"Everyone's always talking about how Superman is always saving people and is a good influence on the community. When they should be talking about how certain athlete's are dominating certain sports, so I'm taking out some frustration and hopefully I can put that cape wearing punk in his place." The steel covered brute explained.
"Well, he's not here so you'll have to answer to me, Mr...?" Winter Solider responded.
"Absorbing Man." The brute introduced himself.
"Well, 'Absorbing Man' allow me to show you what happens to people who offend this city." Winter Solider said as he tried to punch Absorbing Man with his metal arm only for him to block it with ease. Absorbing Man smirked at Winter Solider as the hand that blocked the latter's fist suddenly began to turn the same color as his metal arm pretty soon his whole body was covered in the same metal as the heroes arm, who was then sent back with a punch from the brute.
"He,he,he. You see, I'm called Absorbing Man because, whatever I touch, my body absorbs the material of." Absorbing Man explained walking towards the fallen hero. "Including metal arms!" Absorbing man continued before delivering another punch.
Meanwhile, the two Kryptonian cousins were still fighting, flying around and using they're heat vison.
"Give up 'little cousin'" Superman taunted
"'Big cousin' and you give up." Supergirl shot back.
"What is your problem?" Superman demanded.
"My problem is you! all I want is a chance to be recognized, but you keep stealing the spotlight, It's like I'm nothing." Supergirl confessed causing her cousin to raise his eyebrows.
"Kara, you are not nothing, when we were kids I always looked up to you, I thought you were the coolest person on Krypton, you inspired me to become the hero I am now." Superman comforted her.
Supergirl smiled at her cousins words it's almost like sharing her feelings with the person she had problems with actually helped her face said problems, it looks like Winter Solider was right, she then noticed her teammate in question was gone, the cousins the turned around and saw him fighting Absorbing man and he looked like he was not going to be able to hold his own much longer.
"Isn't that your boyfriend 'Autum Marine'? Superman asked again getting the name wrong.
"It's Winter Solider and he's not my boyfriend! but he does need help we need to get down there." Supergirl said
"No, you need to help him, this is your chance to show them what you can really do." Superman said causing his cousin to smile before rushing to help her teammate while her cousin smiled with pride.
Back with Winter Solider and Absorbing man, the hero continued to fight as the villain then used his absorbing powers to transform into rock, and sent the metal armed hero flying.
"Face it with my absorbing powers I can adapt to anything." Absorbing man taunted.
"We'll see about that." the now rock-clad villain turned to see Supergirl hovering over him with a smirk.
"Beat it girly, I don't want to hurt you." Absorbing man warned.
"Well I want to hurt you." Supergirl shot back.
Absorbing man charged at her but she used her speed to dodge the attack and kicked him in the back, knocking him down. He then tried to use his wrecking ball, but Supergirl caught it with ease and through it away, with Absorbing man still attached to it. The villain then used his powers on the side walk and turned into concrete and tried to charge at her again, but she simply held him back by pressing her finger against his forehead.
Supergirl kicked him away "Is that all you got?" she taunted.
"Never! I can can absorb anything." The villain responded
Supergirl then saw a newspaper on the ground and got an idea. "Anything huh? What about paper?" She said tossing him the newspaper which he caught.
"Even paper." The villain said as he absorbed the object and his body turned into paper.
Supergirl just smirked and used her wind breath to blow him away. The villain screamed as his paper clad body blew away in the air as paper usually does. " I CAN'T BELIVE I FELL FOR THAAATT!" He screamed as he flew.
Supergirl then turned to her teammate, who was recovering. "You, okay?" She asked
"I'm fine, that was awesome." Winter Solider complemented .
"Thanks," Supergirl replied with a blush "And you were right, talking with Superman really helped, I should have listened to you."
"Yeah, you should've." Winter Solider replied with some snark causing Supergirl to playfully punch his arm (his normal one).
Just then the crowd arrived to to cheer for her heroic act she then looked up at her cousin, who was floating above her and giving her a thumbs u before flying away and let her enjoy her moment.
