Jane and Maura were on their third shot of sake at Ebi sushi. Both laughing at Jane's multiple failures at trying to use the chopsticks, she had given up and popped the california roll into her mouth. The honey blonde had smirked and slowly picked up her chopsticks, never breaking eye contact with the brunette. She then effortlessly ate her sashimi. Jane felt her mouth go dry.
"Show off" is all she can say in fake annoyance. Maura's eyes shimmering in the low mood light, she blinked slowly, starting to feel the effect of the alcohol go through her veins. She hummed in agreement at her flaunting.
Jane had struggled to explain what happened with Casey, their history and the truth. But she got through it and Maura had not reacted. Instead, they ordered their first round of shots and they had begun to eat their meals that we served to them.
"Are you going to take him back?" Maura said bluntly, ending the light atmosphere they created. The alcohol gives her the confidence to ask the hard questions. Jane curled into herself bringing her hands together to rub. She stood quiet for a while. Long enough to let the blonde think that maybe Jane hadn't even heard her question.
"Casey what the actual fuck. Why did you do that?" Jane slammed the door shut after watching her best friend walk back out the gymnasium. Casey looked at her with confusion, as if he didn't immediately just cross a line with her.
"We haven't even spoken about the possibility of us even working on things. Then you go ahead and just kiss me. Thats fucking low, then for Maura to just-" Jane cut herself off from her yelling rant. She stared at Casey for waiting.
"I'm sorry Jane, I'm sorry I didn't think you'd react this way." Casey said, sitting back down, and shook his head. Jane scoffed and walked back around and plopped in her desk chair.
"I think you should leave." Jane said finally.
"Jane"
"Casey, just leave. You can call me later, go home to your family. They don't even know you're back yet."
" Will you answer the call?"
"Yea, just you gotta leave. I have to cool down."
Jane sighed loudly, already hating her answer before she said it.
"Yes."
Maura dropped her chopsticks onto the floor. A waiter came by swiftly picking them up and handed her a clean pair. She nodded and said thank you before ordering another round of sake for the both of them.
"I'm not over him Maur, there's so much unfinished history there" Jane added, freaking out over the non responsive blonde. The waiter came and served them their shots. The pair cheered the tiny glasses and threw their heads back.
"You're a fool Jane Clememetine Rizzoli" Maura's voice was hoarse from the alcohol and she cleared her throat. Jane looked at her surprised. She instantly felt a chill go down her spine by the way Maura stared at her, with such lust and want.
"You're a selfless fool. In the weeks that I've come to know you I've never seen you put yourself first." Maura's words begin to slur but she straightens her posture and continues.
"You always help your mother even though she has two competent sons. Even though most of the time she needs you it is the most inconvenient time for you. You pour all your money into those soft ball girls, I barely even know how you can make ends meet. You told me we should just stay friends because you feel like it's what is best for me. To protect my feelings. But I know you want me Jane, and I know you know I want you. Casey comes back after being m.i.a and you immediately take him in. You are a selfless fool." She finished her monologue sitting back into her seat and finishing her plate of sushi.
Jane sat there in shock. Trying to quickly digest everything Maura spurred out, her words slurring together and coming out fast and passionately.
"And you're drunk Maura." It's what came out of her mouth but it wasn't what she had wanted to say. Maura laughs loudly. Genuine from the belly laugh. It was contagious and it made Jane laugh with her.
"And you're my best friend" Maura admitted, Jane's mouth parted.
"You're my Bestfriend too," Jane said easily. Maura smiled softly and leaned over the table and placed a soft kiss at the corner of Jane's mouth. She closed her eyes and felt her body relax at Maura's touch.
"It's um," Jane coughed
"It's getting a little late, and I don't think either of us are sober enough to drive," she rubbed her neck. Maura shook her head and blinked her eyes a few times to make herself more aware again.
"Okay, I'll call the car service. You'll sleep over at my house" Maura stated. She waved over the waiter and handed him her credit card. Before pulling out her phone to order.
"Are we having a sleepover or is this your way of telling me you want to sleep with me?" Jane asked while she stood up and put on her leather jacket and then helped Maura in her pea coat. All Maura did was giggle in response and linked arms with Jane as they exited the restaurant.
The black premium sudan pulled up in front of the restaurant not that long afterwards. Jane went ahead of Maura and opened the door for her. She lent out her hand to help the blonde stabilize her balance while she lowered herself to then slide into the car. The brunette quickly followed and closed the door shut. The car smelled new and it must've just been detailed. Jane didn't find not one speck of lint or crumb anywhere in sight. Jane leaned against the window watching the nightlife of Boston come alive.
She was instantly attacked but the smelled smokey and vanilla? Then feeling weight against her shoulder. Maura eyes closed, breathing softly with her lips parted ever so slightly. All Jane could do was wear a small smile and sigh. She wraps her arm protectively around her before looking back out the window staying alert.
The car pulls up to Maura's home and Jane opens the door for them both. Helping the blonde up and out she wraps her arm around her waist pulling her closer to help her stay balanced. Maura licks her lips when she looks up at Jane and shakes her head.
"You're a damn fool Jane Rizzoli." Maura lets out, forgetting Jane can actually hear her and is not thinking in her head. Jane pretends to ignore her and helps her into her bed. Leaving a glass of water and two Advil for her. Before dredging herself to the guest room and falling asleep fast.
"Jane" Maura said softly as she slowly entered her guest room. The Italian was sprawled across the bed. When she made no movement, Maura came closer. "We're late Jane, you have to wake up" Jane moaned and shook her head.
"Jane Rizzoli you get up right now." Maura dug her finger into Jane's side. The brunette squealed and got a hold of Maura's wrist and pulled her into the bed. "No no, how about you go back to sleep Maur." Jane whined like a six year old. Maura laughed but winced at the pain from her headache. She laid there still for a moment. Feel Jane's chest rise and fall. Almost allowing herself to fall back asleep.
Though she quickly opened her eyes remembering it was a Tuesday morning and not the weekend. "Absolutely not, you will not break my perfect attendance because you want to stay in bed." Maura stood up quickly but not before pulling Jane's arm up with her. Jane complained but complied. "You have ten minutes to shower and meet me downstairs, and no before you ask. We do not have time for coffee. We have to leave now." The brunette pouted and sulked her way into the ensuite of the guest bedroom.
The duo walks into the main office side by side. Jane never took off her sunglasses because of her hangover, Maura seemingly recovered quickly from hers.
Jane chug the green juice shot, it'll help wake you up." Maura shoved a shot glass of a gross green color that almost made Jane hurl.
"Nuh-uh no way" Jane shook her head then ran to the entrance of Maura's home and held the door open for Maura. The blonde swiftly took the shot before scurrying to the door.
"If you weren't so stubborn you'd already been feeling much better." Maura said as she pinched Jane's arm. "OWW" Jane yelped dramatically and pulled her arm away.
Donna watched the pair and laughed. "You two get along so well." She said in observation. Jane rolled her eyes and went to get the attendance sheets for her and Maura from their mailboxes.
"Maura sweetie, don't let Casey get to you. I've never liked him, you're so much better for Jane." Donna whispered to her. Maura's smile dropped and stood silent. She had forgotten the reason her and Jane had gone out the day before. All the memories flooding back.
"Okay, here you go" Jane skipped back and handed Maura her folder. Maura nodded curtly at Donna before turning around and letting Jane open the door for her. Jane followed her up the stairs.
"What are you doing, Coach Rizzoli." Maura asked irritability when she noticed that Jane followed her up the stairs. Jane looked confused and caught up with Maura's pace.
"Whoa wait a minute, Coach? C'mon Maura what did Donna say to you." Maura shook head, absolutely annoyed with herself for not fully understanding her strong emotions about Casey's arrival. Of Course since Jane friendzoned her she wouldn't stay single. But now that it was happening, she was livid.
Before the doctor unlocked her class she turned and faced the coach. "Jane, are you and Casey going to become serious?" Jane went wide eyed. "Maur I- , I don't know."
Maura huffed and unlocked her door. She entered with Jane closely on her heels. "Maur, I thought we talked things out last night" Jane asked, confused. Maura took a moment to breathe, to recollect her thoughts.
"Then you must clarify with your family that we are really just friends… Best friends." Maura corrected herself, Jane nodded slowly, waiting for Maura to continue.
"I can't have them continue to imply that we are a couple. When you decided it'd be better for us if we weren't."
"Maur stop saying it as if it wasn't a mutual decision." Jane was starting to get annoyed.
Maura huffed. "What are you talking about, you're the one that didn't let me finish my sentence-" Jane cut her off
"No don't do that, you had barely just gotten out of your relationship with Jack. We kissed and we didn't speak for a week. Do not put all the blame on me. Our actions speak louder than Maura's words Maura." Jane snatched off her sunglasses to look clearly and directly into Maura's. Maura opened then closed her mouth.
Maura was letting her jealousy and possessiveness she had over Jane win.
"I'm sorry." Maura said softly and Jane scuffed.
"No Jane, I truly do apologize. You're my best friend. I don't want to lose you." Maura walked up slowly to Jane. resting her hand on her shoulder. Jane shook her head and pulled her into a hug.
"Maur, you'll never lose me" Maura let out a sigh in relief and let Jane engulf her into a bear hug. The school bell had rung and Brittany and Veronica had fallen into the classroom together because they were wrestling outside.
Jane and Maura broke their hug and laughed at the younger pair.
"Oh c'mon girls, not in Doctor Isles' classroom" Jane complained before pretending to be the referee. Maura laughed at their goofiness, grateful for the tension being cut. The pair broke apart and high-fived Jane and said their respected good mornings to Maura and sat down.
"Hey Maur, I'll buy us breakfast from my Ma's. First period is free for me." Jane said while she walked to the door to leave. Allowing the teenagers to enter the room.
"That sounds wonderful, but Jane-"
"Yeah yeah I know. Nothing greasy." Jane rolled her eyes but then flashed her grin toward Maura letting her know all was okay.
Maura smiled softly before facing her full class. "Okay class, please open up your textbooks to page 124. We'll be learning about ecosystems and communities." The class all groaned and opened their books.
Author's Note: Yeah totally best friends, not like their soulmates are something. Unless...
