It was rather sudden when Heather stepped inside Hiccup and Toothless's hut, letting in the chilly, morning air. Gnashing her teeth guiltily, she gripped the opening of the entrance, glancing at the trouble she had caused.
Toothless, awoken by her, fell down from his sleeping spot, which happened to be a bench in the corner, hard. Afterward, peeking at the newcomer, he groaned, slowly raising himself up.
"What the hell, Heather," he mumbled, sitting up and stroking the impact on the head, before covering his mouth, yawning. "Didn't your parents teach you to knock?"
"I'm sorry," she apologized, grinning nervously as she closed the entryway behind herself. "It's the first time I've seen such a door."
"The door is a door; either way, you knock."
Abruptly, they could've heard the exclaim, "Hey, what's all this ruckus," coming from above, and glancing up the stairs at the back of the room, Heather get an eyeful of the hatch, which after extending revealed Hiccup, who blinked, tiredly. "Good mornin'. What's goin' on here?"
"Good morning, sunshine. We have a guest," Toothless greeted, before pointing with his head at Heather, straightening on his spot.
"Good morning, Hiccup," Heather responded, waving her hand, narrowly. "I didn't mean to wake you two up."
"That's okay, I guess," Hiccup murmured, going down the stairs. "What brings ya here?"
"Um, first of all, because I'm terribly curious, are you two always…separate?" Heather asked, pointing at them and Toothless's bedding.
"Only today," Hiccup answered, leaning on the mentioned furniture, and ricocheting at Toothless on the ground, smirking weakly. "Toothless got himself a little punishment."
"For yesterday's kidnapping?" Heather inquired, squinting her eyes at Toothless mockingly, while the man clenched his jaw, miffed.
"That too, but also for rippin' my favorite shirt, and clawin' my shoulder," Hiccup elaborated, and when she did, Heather noticed the piece of bandage on her neck whose rest was hidden under her shirt.
Toothless added quickly, "I didn't mean that." He then looked at Hiccup, concern crossing his face as he asked, "Are you still mad at me?"
Hence, Hiccup shook her head, beaming and walked towards him, before replying, "No," while she knelt in front of him. "I can't be mad at ya for too long," she whispered, messing his hair, just as he loosened, smiling. "However, do something like that again, and don't even enter the house."
"Okay, sweetheart," Toothless responded and kissed her under the eye, swiftly, "and again, I'm really sorry."
"All right, all right, quit the taffy," Hiccup ended, patting his cheek. "Heather is watchin', and I thought that soft side of yers is reserved only for me," she joked and giggled, after Toothless glanced at the quoted woman, and immediately, his expression hardened. "Go change."
Nodding, Toothless stood up and went upstairs to their room, while Hiccup raised herself and turned towards Heather, who swayed on her feet, uncertain.
"Would ya like to have breakfast with us? Today, everyone is responsible for makin' their own breakfast, so-,"
"No, no. I just came by, to talk," Heather grunted, straightening, "about certain someone."
"Since ye're namin' yerself Dagur's archenemy, I guess that it's about him," Hiccup supposed, moving toward the back of the room, where she took a few breakfast ingredients from the basket located there. "Bread?"
"No, thank you," Heather replied and sighed. "Yes, I meant Dagur. I think that we should do something about him."
"Why? I thought the case was closed," Hiccup replied, setting down the carried food on the table by the wall. "Dagur doesn't bother us, so why would we?"
"He doesn't bother your village, but you don't know about the rest."
"What rest?"
"Well, dragons of all kinds! He's a hunter; he travels throughout the world and kills them on a daily basis!"
"Well, in that case, I agree that somethin' should be done," Hiccup stated and then shouted upwards, "Toothless, what would ya like yer bread with?"
After a moment, the specified man appeared, his head peeking out of the hatch. "Did you call me?" he asked, frowning and looking surprised.
"Yes. What would ya like yer bread with?"
"Bread?" He repeated, leaning on the frame, and hence, uncovering the piece of his bare chest. "I hoped you would make your delicious porridge."
Before answering, Hiccup leered at Heather and snorted silently, noticing how she looked to the side, flushed. "If ya fly to the Berk for the milk, then I will," she proposed, lifting the corner of her mouth.
"I see," he murmured, clicking his tongue. "In that case, I'll have eggs, please," he finished, turning and walking into the room, disappearing from their sight.
"Will do!" Hiccup chuckled, before cutting the bread into slices.
Whilst that, Heather leaned over her, patting her hand on Hiccup's back, excitedly. "I take back my yesterday's questions. He's freaking hot!" she whisper-shouted, biting her lower lip, hard.
"And mine," Hiccup snarled, stabbing the knife into a table and glaring at Heather, rapidly.
"Woah, calm down, sunshine," Heather teased, but swallowed nervously when Hiccup remained silent. "The truth is, I'm the last person you should be worrying about. I'm not interested in him, besides, I think you should keep an eye on someone else."
"Ugh, don't remind me," Hiccup groaned, narrowing her eyes as she focused on preparing the meal. "Maybe Toothless doesn't find you attractive," she pretended to be Ruffnut, before barking, "Next time she says somethin' like that, I'll bite off her head."
"I don't doubt," Heather cackled, before clearing her throat, soundly. "Also, could we get back to the main theme?"
At the question, Hiccup halted her doings, turned around, and leaned her loins on the table, crossing her arms. "Heather, look, I'm not against it. The idea that he might hurt innocent creatures - it's sickenin', but I don't want to risk anybody's life."
"Risk what life?" Heather snickered, rolling her eyes. "It's seven dragons against a few ships! Nobody gets hurt!"
"Okay, but-,"
"Hiccup, you said yourself that something should be done, so where does this uncertainty come from?" Heather queried as she studied her, narrowing her eyes. "Nothing bad will happen; your people are more than capable of taking care of themselves, and Dagur is dangerous - he can't be left to do whatever he wants, or else he'll attack at the most inopportune moment, I assure you."
Afterward, Hiccup looked to the side, biting on her finger, before exhaling, soundly. "Alright, I'm in, but under two conditions."
"Go ahead."
"First: everyone must agree, and when I say everyone, I mean everyone," Hiccup pointed out, knitting her brows, seriously. "I don't want the situation where one person is hesitant because ya know what it can lead to."
"Okay, no problem," Heather agreed, nodding her head. "And the second one?"
Before answering, Hiccup's muscle in the jaw twitched, but finally, she replied, sharply, "No killin'," and continued, glimpsing Heather's shock of someone, who was caught red-handed. "I remember what ya said in the clubhouse, and yes, killin' Dagur is a crime."
"Hiccup, you don't understand-,"
"There is nothin' to understand, Heather," Hiccup countered, boring her eyes into the quoted woman. "Murder is murder, no matter the circumstances."
"He killed my parents!" Heather snapped, twisting her face. "He destroyed my entire village, the whole island," she added, while her eyes glistened. "He deserves to die," she summed up, squeezing her eyes, fighting back tears.
Concurrently, sympathy clouded Hiccup's features, but she quickly dismissed the guilty feeling with one inhale. "I'm so sorry for yer parents, for everythin' that Dagur could've done to ya, but," she exhaled, calmly, "but I won't change my mind," Hiccup made it clear, hardening her expression. "It's just revenge and I won't help ya out in it."
"But I will," Toothless declared abruptly, standing atop the stairs.
Consequently, Hiccup didn't even glance at him, while the room was surrounded by an anxious silence, in which only Toothless's steps downstairs could be heard. Eventually, the man stopped by them, looming closer to Heather and nodding, before glaring at Hiccup, fiercely.
Returning his gaze, the woman snapped her brows together, and then turned away from him, ignoring him, and instead focusing on the woman. "Heather, revenge isn't the answer, I can guarantee that to ya," she began, loosening her expression. "I know that because I also thought it was, but let me tell you, I'm so glad I wasn't able to achieve it, or else I could've lost the love of my life."
Immediately, Heather's eyes widened, and she gazed from her to Toothless, who didn't seem touched by her words. "Hiccup-," he began but was interrupted.
"Will get back to ya," Hiccup droned, not even glancing at him. "I understand yer hatred towards Dagur, I really do, and I couldn't put myself in yer position. The thought that ye've lost yer parents, yer village, I," she concluded and inhaled, hugging herself, "I couldn't, but Dagur's death won't brin' them back, only result in yer later guilt."
"Maybe," she started, straightening her shoulders, "but it might save others. I would also like to remind you that he still kills!"
"Okay, and I agreed that he should be stopped," Hiccup justified, calmly, "but not at the cost of death for death."
"What about one death for thousands of lives?" Toothless inquired, narrowing his eyes, as Hiccup gazed at him, finally. "He's a murderer, and murders don't change but can take a lot of lives with them before they die," he growled, grounding his jaw. "He killed an entire island of innocent people, is killing, maybe even currently, innocent dragons, and even kidnapped you, so why are you defending him so much?"
Just as he said that Hiccup's eyes widened, and she took a step backward. "My gods, it's just revenge for ya too, isn't it?" she gasped, while her lips departed in shock. "Ya seriously want to kill him for this?" she asked, pointing at the wound under her chin.
"If so then what? Also, for murdering blameless people and my kind!"
"It's just stupid revenge against someone ya barely know!"
"I don't need to know him to figure out what a piece of shit he is," Toothless snarled, gnashing his teeth. "For people like him, there is no forgiveness."
Thus, Hiccup's features were clouded by the discomfort, which she hid, pressing her lips together. "You know, now, I'm thinkin' back to that branch from over five months ago, and wonderin', what would've happened, if it hadn't broken. Since ye're so vicious towards the man whose only crime was kidnappin' me, what ya must have felt towards me, then," she quaked, looking away.
"That's not the same."
"I wouldn't say so," Hiccup disagreed, tensing her shoulders. "As for me, the situation seems-,"
"Hiccup, you are not him!" Toothless yelled, and then, when Hiccup glanced at him, he could've noticed the tears shimmering in her eyes.
"Ye're right," Hiccup croaked, while her lip trembled. "Ya thought about me far, far worse," she clarified, and before Toothless could reply, continued. "Ya are awfully unfair, a-and hypocritical," she admitted, wrinkling her nose, furiously. "After all, ya behaved the same way he does."
"Am I hearing you right?" Toothless questioned, as his eyes went round. "Do you really compare me to that guy?"
"Yes, I do!" Hiccup bellowed, drawing back her lips in a snarl. "Because ya were just like him, if not worse!"
Hence, the whole room was surrounded by dead silence, through which Hiccup could sense her words. Calming her emotions down, she gazed at Toothless's face, which was drenched in the hurt of betrayal.
Instantly, she stepped forward, but as she did he inched backward, before bolting towards the entrance, suddenly. Hiccup's heart gained speed, watching his distancing figure, which stopped at its target, which was the exit.
There, he pivoted rapidly, and skimmed past Heather, affirming, "I'm with you," before scowling at Hiccup, enraged, "and you, don't talk to me." With that, he stormed out, slamming the front entrance firmly behind him.
Throughout the entire event, Hiccup remained motionless, stunned, as Heather looked at her, guiltily. "I didn't mean for that to happen," she admitted, frowning worriedly.
"Heather, leave," Hiccup commanded, rapidly.
"Hiccup-,"
"Leave," Hiccup repeated, glaring at her, then squeezed her eyes shut tightly. "Just leave."
Eventually, Hiccup heard Heather sigh and leave, the same way Toothless did. Afterward, sniffling, she felt how the tear rolled down her cheek, but she didn't bother. She deserved it, she believed, as the silent sob left her mouth, because she had fucked up horribly.
