I've Got My Angel Now
Many of his brothers and sisters would probably go on to believe that it was Dean Winchester that first caused him to question or disobey heaven but that was far, far from the truth, Truth be told Castiel had always had issues with disobedience so much so he'd been reprogrammed so many times there were often spots in his memory he didn't question couldn't question not like any of the angels would remember afterwards anyway. No Dean was not the first human he cared about or the first one he'd been put in charge to care for and protect. in fact maybe it was her that attracted him to Dean and humanity so much or simply the urge not to fail another again as he was forced to fail her.
Damonica Lily Salvatore first born child of Lily and Guisepee Salvatore her father being the traditionalist he was, was disappointed and furious at her birth.
She'd had a hard life from the beginning that was for sure a mother who neglected and hated her and an alcoholic abusive father that despised her to boot. He had been in charge of protecting her and guiding her throughout her life he had been confused on why he'd been given the task to do so when usually one of the younger angels were given a role like this. They'd told him she needed to be protected and the younger angels would not have enough experience to get the job done. According to them she'd been born specific kind of gift one that could be turned into a valuable weapon for heaven or if put in the wrong hands a devastating one for hell.
He'd never admit to his brothers and sisters but he was curious and and fascinated by humanity and creation and excited to finally be able to observe it.
So he watched her watched as she struggled and suffered under her mothers neglect and devotion to her brother and her fathers sheer hatred for her.
Castiel watched her as she grew up following along as chased butterflies and played with in the snow. he began to take notice about her peculiarities as well.
She was unpredictable even as child.
Anything her father told her she seemed to do the opposite of no matter how severe the consequences He was never sure if this was due to her fathers poor treatment of her or just something all human children do or both.
She had a curious bright mind always fascinated by the things around her fondness rose in his chest as he watched her reaching out to pet a bee before he remembered they sting so he sent a sharp warning through their bond and she backed away.
She was wild but she was kind always empathetic to others especially those in pain one example of this came to mind when she gave her maid her teddy bear to comfort her when her father had started screaming about the house not being in order in a drunken rage. The maid had locked herself in Damonica's room scared tears falling down her face and the young child had gotten her bear offering it to the woman asking her not to cry. the woman just pulled her into a hug they stayed that way for some time just taking comfort in one another their embrace getting tighter as the door handle shook Castiel made sure it would hold. She loved and protected her brother even teaching him things like how to climb a tree knowing that she'd get in trouble but she never held that against him and all Castiel could feel was awe at this. Even angels felt resentment toward their siblings especially if they felt that sibling was being favored over another but he could tell that's not how she felt all she could feel for her brother Stefan was pure love.
She loved helping out with the animals too whether it be with the horses or the chickens unfortunately her father had seen this interest and gave her a baby turkey for her birthday. Castiel felt unease at the mans smile as he watched his daughters elation as she held the young bird close to her chest with awe. Especially the feeling that went through him when the man insisted she should name it.
His fears became founded when 3 years later on Thanksgiving her father took her out and handed her an axe. He demanded she kill the Turkey her beloved pet her best friend. When she refused and he violently shoved her to the ground Castiel felt rage inside him he tried to fight against it knowing he needed to remain neutral but how could he? Besides wasn't this something that could corrupt her spirit? He felt her soul twist in a sick way as her father forced her to eat her fallen friend in a sick sort of cruelty. But that night wasn't over when her mother left them alone with him unprotected an his charge was once again forced to take up the protection of Stefan when their father accused one of them of stealing. He felt her anguish as her father burned her with cigarette tips and disgust when her mother barely acknowledged her choosing instead to cart Stefan away.
He was there for her all through the night as her soul ached with harshness of the events that had unfolded. An idea came to him he reached out and found the soul of of her beloved Sammy and sent him to her that night in a dream. He knew he wasn't supposed to do things like this but he couldn't bring himself to leave her in this much pain. After the dream her soul began to calm down and lay back in peacefulness he sent an embrace of his grace around her which sent further comfort to her soul.
He Watched as she continued to love and care for her brother and even protected him from their father even when the blame laid on her brother like the time he stole their fathers watch she didn't let him take the fall.
But he was there too for all the times her soul was in agony ripped apart by all the hatred and coldness it had been born into. Do to him being in charge of guarding her soul it had been connected to him. He sent waves of comfort and protection during these harsh moments always giving her just enough strength to get through them.
She grew up and became a very beautiful young woman and he continued at his post watching over her as her mother died and she was left to take up the care of her younger brother being the last secure attachment in his life.
He was there as she comforted Stefan and promised she'd be at the funeral although he could sense through the link she was lying so when she wondered off toward the tavern he shook her soul telling her to go back.
She fought it but eventually went back. She moved monotonously through the entire thing she was there for Stefan but she herself wanted to run because inside laid agony, agony in her soul at being forced to sit through a service she felt deep down her mother would never do for her.
And after it was all over she snuck out that night into the woods carrying her head into her hands she shrieked. Instantly birds began flying toward her from all directions landing dead at her feet. When she opened her eyes and they laid on the horror before her all she could do was let out a horrified sob. He sent her as much warmth and comfort as he could speaking in her mind with her thoughts that she was going to be okay. He knew her soul could hear him because it reached out toward his grace strengthening as it did so.
That had been the first and last time he'd seen her powers when she was human.
Before she was forced to go off and serve in the civil war as nurse. He felt the emotion of helplessness as she cared for fallen soldiers and saw first line all the horrors of war something he himself had experienced many times, all the while all she wanted to do was be by her baby brothers side worried to leave him unprotected his letters did not help in that regard. When she came back that's when what Castiel liked to refer to as the disease took over.
When she met Katerina Petrova or as she was going by Katherine Pierce it brought out a side of her Castiel was unnerved by but one he understood Katherine filled a role for his charge one that she'd pretty much been longing for since birth a parent. Katherine noticed something inside Damonica a lot like her a darkness she was very familiar with and Katherine seized the vulnerability and nurtured it. As she would say centuries later to his charge. Guisppee created the monster all she had to do was nurture it and let it out of it's cage.
Katherine took her under her wing and gave her back power she desperately needed all the while promising her a new life of freedom where they could be together. Castiel could only watch as the events unfolded with panic and horror.
He tried through the bond to desperately pull her back from this path but she evaded him at every turn.
Then his failure began the night they went to save Katherine both Salvatores had vampire blood in their system he had been on an important mission in heaven as an uprising had been started and he had been called to help deal with it. It only took this moment of absence from him for the worst to happen.
As he was fighting he felt his connection to her leave as her soul left her body. everything in him told him to go to her but he couldn't and that night she and her brother died killed by their own father.
Panic and an emotion he'd never felt before went through him his chest tightening as soon as he'd been allowed to return he did especially when his connection to her came back tenfold.
His superiors were aware of the situation disappointed in the failure to protect her but understanding as they'd all had bigger things to deal with. They resigned him back to his garrison like losing her was just a papercut for him like watching her grow up guiding her throughout her life and comforting and protecting her had meant absolutely nothing, which caused him to pause and remain silent that the bond that connected them was not only back but still remained even after he was reassigned.
first chance he had where he could leave undetected he took it. And like he had so many times before he went to her discovering that for now she was indeed still alive but barely Katerina's blood had turned pushed her into transition if she didn't take any human blood for 24 hours she'd die for real and he'd managed to catch her right before her 24 hours were up he knew she couldn't see him as he sat next to her on the log by querry wrapping his arms around his wings encircled her feeling through their connection just how weak she was she had at best an hour left before heaven awaited her and he promised himself he'd be there with her through it all she wouldn't be alone. Castiel knew she could feel the comfort he was sending through because unknowingly she reached through they're bond grabbing hold as if her life depended on it and he supposed with everything she'd been through in her life it kinda did.
She was starting to slip away into a sleep he knew would be permanent when a twig snapped. His head shot to the side where he saw her brother except the Stefan he'd observed for all these years was gone he'd shut off his emotions having clearly competed the transition and he continued to walk toward them a woman obediently following behind them in a daze. A dark feeling came over Castiel and he held Damonica to his chest tighter then before his wing rising over her to block Stefan from her view but he knew it would make no difference as neither could see his wings. He went into shock when he nudged accidentally nudged her a bit and she actually seemed to feel it, she must be closer to death than he thought but another sneaking suspicion he didn't want to name still hung in the air around them.
With every step her brother took toward her he wanted to take her and flee but she wasn't dead yet the reaper had not shown up. Plus he knew if he did anything used his powers in any way then heaven would know and a part of him knew she would be in more danger then she was in now never mind what they'd do to him.
"Stefan?' She croaked out in question her eyes blearily staring up at her brother her face weakly turned towards him. "What are you doing?"
Her eyes trailed to the woman behind him a question in her gaze her brothers only response being to tell the woman to sit down.
His only verbal explanation being. "She's a gift for you."
Only confusing her more as she stared into her brothers eyes, Castiel did not like where this was heading. "What." Damonica spit out eyeing her brother breathes coming out weak now. "Have you done Stefan?" She heaved out the rest of the sentence. Stefan didn't seemed put out by her tone in fact he seemed dismissive in the summary of the events.
"I went to see Father, he came at me. I didn't know my own strength. There was blood everywhere he was dying, and the blood was too strong, I needed it. I had to have it."He emphasized the last few words staring deeply into her eyes.
He held on to his charge tighter as she tried keeping her head up her eyes dull but now full of realization and resignation of what had transpired. "You fed." She said her helplessness at the statement covered in a tone of accusation.
Stefan leaned over her eyes desperately searching her face as he rushed out. "Yes and it's incredible, my body is exploding with power."
"No." She hissed out at him catching on to his unspoken question eyes darting to the woman sitting with glazed over eyes. Castiel squeezed his own eyes shut as he felt her distress and terror. She didn't want this. Holding her close he continued to look around and for the first time himself felt helpless a feeling he'd always remember along with the deepest regret of what came next and in the deepest darkest part of himself that he'd never confront relief at what happened next as well.
Stefan continued as if he hadn't heard her. " I can hear things from far away, I can see through the darkness, and i can move like it's magic." He came closer to her for her to flinch away as they came face to face surely her brother could hear how much her heart was racing how scared she was. "And the guilt the pain, Damey I can turn it off like a switch."He snapped his fingers to prove the point using his nickname for her like a reassurance that everything was fine. "Katherine was right it's a whole new world out there."
"Katherine's dead." She choked out tears falling down her face. "There's no point without her, I don't want this let me go Stefan."She said firmly. Castiel could feel her agony and anger filled him knowing she was indeed still alive just evading like her reputation preceded her. His wings flared a bit before ruffling when Stefan snaked a hand behind her head. "No you can turn that off too you don't have to feel that pain anymore."
"I DON"T WANT IT." She shrieked out at him. He flinched back a bit at her tone Castiel taking a look into his mind to see a memory of his older sister dancing at the surface one of the only times she'd ever snapped at him coming forth, Castiel could feel emotions associated with it coming to the surface. Stefan's face searched hers a different resolution taking place. His hand behind her neck hauled her to her feet. A softer tone coming through "You're weak, You'll be dead soon you do need this, You'll die." He added the last part with a hint of trepidation. Castiel didn't know what to do he was beginning to see where this situation was heading but he couldn't use his powers all he could do was watch helplessly and hope Stefan made the right right choice regarding his sister.
His older sister was not afraid though as she stared hard in his eyes, She brought her hand up to his cheek stroking there lovingly. "I don't want this." She said soothingly. "Steffy let me go."
Stefan still held her as stared over at the glazed over woman's eyes his own hardening he grabbed the woman and held her to his chest still holding supporting holding his sister by the back of her neck he quickly bit into the strangers neck tiny drops of blood spilling out. "I can't let you die." He said before grabbing his sister by the back of her head she began to struggle with everything else she had left in her. "I can't." She said only for him to take the opportunity to shove her head into the open wound she continued to try and push back with everything she had but his grip was unrelenting and soon enough she stopped struggling all together. Castiel's heart sunk as he watched feed her face coming up for air for second fangs drawn out eyes blood red veins protruding under them before she dived animalistically back taking her first life and her human one with it.
And a predatory species took it's place.
His connection never with her still never died though. In fact it only seemed to strengthen and so did his determination to help her.
His failure to help her before leaving a stamp of guilt in him he'd never be able to shake.
So he continued to watch over her saw as she promised her brother an enternity of misery for forcing her to become what she was. Despite this she seemed to become despondent watching as her brother tore through the town before leaving him in the hands of Lexi a vampire who swore help return her brother back onto the right track instead of continue on to eat his way through the town.
The vampire warned her about the anger and resentment against what her brother had done getting the best of her in the end, but she didn't listen just told the older vampire to take care of him and she went on her way not sparing her childhood home another glance much less a thought.
Castiel still never felt any resentment toward her brother in regards to her parents favoritism only calm indifference like she'd made peace with it eons ago.
No he did however feel resentment toward her little brother for taking away the only parental figure she had. It simmered under the surface of her soul waiting to be let out he took every chance he could to soothe it back down and send her peace and warmth whenever it begged to come out.
He checked in on her throughout her vampire life he only felt something change and shift in 1912.
That's where everything went to hell where everything changed. When she met the vampire named Sage who took her under her wing and reminded her everything Katherine had taught her about being a vampire something in her shifted.
She tried to teach her brother how to feed like Sage had taught her only for it to backfire royally when his ripper side once again took control.
He searched her soul and felt no guilt from no remorse for what she'd done to her little brother only twisted satisfaction.
Sage had also reminded Damonica of a memory where she had talked to Katherine about how her father had told all his relatives out in Italy that she was a boy calling her Damon in his letters as it was seen at the time shameful for a girl to be the firstborn in a family they needed an heir and a spare a woman could never be the head of the household. She remembered Katherine telling her she should take the name Damon saying she could turn the shame around on it's head as she could lead just as well as any man. Katherine had changed her own name of coarse to suit the person she'd become so why shouldn't she.
So his charge now called herself Damon seeming unbothered by the looks she recieved for it claiming Damonica was a mouthful anyway.
When she christened herself a new name it was like she had formed a new self one dark, merciless and at times cruel. Castiel noted she seemed to like playing with her food like an Orca angels could have opinions on things he knew many in his garrison who did Uriel always sprang to mind. He didn't blame her for those instincts she was a predator it only came natural. He also knew though that predators like her didn't have to kill to eat which was why his disappointment only seemed to grow every time she killed someone. He tried guiding her like he did before but she just pulled away and he didn't want to risk her turning her humanity off.
He saw how she tormented her brother and continued on the dark path she was headed on. All he wanted was to comfort her and bring her back to the person she used to be the person he knew was still within her buried deep.
Castiel had killed Sage for what she had done at least he felt reassured that his charge couldn't be "taught' by her again.
Then Augustine came around and Castiel could feel every moment as she was made to live through autopsies at human pain tolerance. Every night he was there holding her to his chest and sending his grace out toward her soothing her tormented soul unable to heal her lest heaven catches on but he did send her into dreams of running through the trees and exploring nature like she used to as a child.
When she finally did get out at the expense of her friend Enzo she wasn't the same that was for sure an certain her humanity was off and she began to eat her way through New York. He could hear her thoughts and knew the one person she wanted to check up on her was the one person who never bothered to notice she was missing he understood her vexation when not only did he not show up but he sent Lexi as well.
It came to no surprise to him when she did what she did to her at all.
Castiel began to become surprised and concerned when he watched her push her compulsion to it's very limits like no other vampires had bothered practicing before and that's when he observed her powers taking hold even with compulsion working at it's maximum she should not have been able to do what she could. So he prodded his superiors for information about it and found out that she was a psychic a race of humans that could control the minds and read the thoughts of humans they could strip them of their free will as well. Apparently their father had originally created them for deep healing as they could go inside the minds and souls of others like no other creature. They could stop wars and bring peace as well. However because in essence they were still human they could be corrupted too and most of the psychics ended up being that way no thanks to Lucifer who turned them into Sirens.
He didn't want that path for her although he was still quite confused on how she had retained her powers.
However soon his focus was taken up by Dean Winchester and the apocalypse and although he felt many changes of his own regarding his old charge he had to ignore them in favor of doing his duties. His life changed when he rebelled and was cut off from heaven after he had died helping the Winchesters with the apocalypse he was given a promotion in rank. That's where things began to get complicated while he was hurt Dean had told him leave him alone in favor of having a new life with Lisa and Ben he granted his wishes not telling him he'd brought Sam back from the cage.
That all seemed to blow up in his face when Dean did find Sam and soon enough they were back to hunting monsters.
That's where Castiel began to find himself between a rock and a hard place he had a civil war in heaven to see through so he couldn't be there for the Winchesters whenever they called he'd need someone when he couldn't to protect them when he couldn't one that could get the job done. That's when pieces began to fall together in his mind what if he could both protect the Winchesters and help his former charge? He could help get her back to the person she once was the one he'd failed the one he missed.
He sifted through her memories from the time he'd been gone and yes she had changed. Her old self was beginning to come back elation at the thought of her healing washed over him. He could do this.
So when her brother who'd sacrificed himself for her to Klaus was bit by one of his hybrids he seized the opportunity.
She sat with her brother tucked under her chin as she cried over him his eyes barely open.
When she saw him she hissed at him threateningly. Castiel was confused looking looking down at his vessel he'd chosen this one as it had a resemblance to her weren't humans more trusting of people that looked like them? Angels had done it many times before appearing like the person they came down to see. Maybe he'd gotten something wrong the Winchesters were always telling him he didn't understand humanity as well as he though the did.
So he reached out with all his grace sweeping over her she couldn't see it but a light wrapped around her and all her fear was chased away. She was looking at him in awe and he was looking at her like she looked at Sammy all those years ago the little chick in he palm of her hand. Katherine had looked at her like that once only his was unwavering and undiluted full of love and understanding.
"Who are you?" She manged to get out now standing in front of Stefan her protective demeanor breaking.
He walked over to her before they stood face to face unlike Dean she didn't seem to care that he was in her personal space. He reached out running a hand down her cheek.
"You may not know me that well but I know you." He said his deep voice strong and still glued to her own. "I'm very glad we were finally able to meet Damonica Salvatore I've been waiting for this moment for a very long time."
He looked down toward Stefan before meeting her beautiful icy blue gaze. "I have a deal for you."
