Now, there will be some movies that are going to be mentioned and some made-up movies that I came up with. So sit back, relax and enjoy this cute little chapter of Eggos & Promises. Enjoy.
Chapter Eight
Double Date
Tuesday July 18th, 1989
"So, what movie are we going to see?" El asked her boyfriend.
El and Mike were hanging out at the mall with Max and Lucas for a double date to the movies as they try to pick what movie to go see together. Originally, Jennifer, Will, Dustin and Suzie were going to join them, but Jennifer and Will had something planned together as they were going out to eat dinner with Jennifer's parents and with Hopper and Joyce joining them. As for Dustin and Suzie, they were busy with work at the comic book store. Since Mike and Lucas were off, they plan on taking their respective girlfriends to the movies and afterwards go out for pizza.
"Mike? Mike? Hello? Earth to Mike?" El asked as she nugged Mike's arm to get his attention.
"Hmm? What?" Mike asked, turning his attention to El after looking at the movie showings on the board.
"What movie do you want to go see?" El asked.
"A lot of good movies playing." Mike said.
"I know the perfect one. Lethal Weapon 2." Lucas said.
"Really? You want to take us to go see Lethal Weapon 2?" Max asked.
"Yeah. Hey, I heard that it's better than the first one." Lucas said.
"You guys want to watch it because you want to see some senseless violence." Max said.
"Well, that's what makes this movie so good. Plus, you've got Joe Pesci in it, I'm sure he'll make this movie pretty funny." Mike said.
"Can we not see anything that's not too violent?" El asked.
"How about Licence to Kill?" Mike asked.
El glared at Mike for a bit. "Really? James Bond?"
"Uh, yeah. Unless you have an idea." Mike said.
El looked up at the showings to pick what movie to go see. There was a showing for Ghostbusters II, another showing of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and a showing of Batman. Then, she saw something that really caught her eye.
"How about Star Trek V?" El asked.
"Oh, God. She's turning into a nerd like her boyfriend." Max rolled her eyes.
"I hear a lot of fans aren't impressed with that one." Mike told her.
"I prefer Last Crusade." Max put in.
"Didn't Steve see that with his girlfriend Michelle?" Lucas asked.
"Yeah, so?" Max came back.
"C'mon Mike, don't blow this for me." El pleaded.
"I'm with Mike here. Star Trek V is not that good. Let's go see Batman. I heard that Michael Keaton is awesome in it." Lucas said.
"Batman?" El asked.
"Yeah. Batman. Have you ever heard of..." Mike asked as El gave him a confused look on her face.
Mike recognized that look El was giving him.
"Sorry." Mike apologized.
"How can you keep forgetting how I grew up?" El asked.
"El, it's fine, even I forget sometimes." Max told her, trying to break up the tension.
"Let's go see it. I've heard some good things about it." Lucas said.
"Wait a minute, weren't we planning on going to see it? Just you, me, Will and Dustin?" Mike asked.
"Oh, yeah. I forgot." Lucas said. "I totally forgot that the four of us were planning to go see it."
"Men." El and Max both said.
"Problem?" Lucas asked, looking offended.
"Yeah. I would like to know too." Mike said.
"You were gonna leave us hanging." Max explained.
"What she said." El put in.
Mike sighed a bit while Lucas rolled his eyes before suggesting another movie to see.
"How about Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan?" Lucas asked.
"Dude, you do realize that El doesn't like scary movies." Mike said.
"Yeah, so?" Lucas asked.
"She doesn't want to watch a movie involving a guy wearing a hockey mask killing horny teens." Max said.
El's nod told them Max was right.
"So, no Stephen King for you?" Mike asked El.
"Absolutely not." El said.
"So, what do you want to see since we can't see Friday the 13th or Batman or James Bond?" Mike asked.
Then, El looked at the other movies and noticed one of the other movies that were playing. A smile appeared on her face as she found the perfect movie for the four of them to watch.
"How about this one?" El asked as she pointed to one of the showings.
"When Harry Met Sally." Mike said.
"A chick flick? Are you serious?" Lucas asked. "I would rather watch Ghostbusters II."
Mike and El looked at Lucas while Max gave him the death glare.
"I'll have what she's having." Max told them.
"Your first romantic comedy." Mike grinned.
"Romantic comedy? What is that?" El asked with a confused look on her face.
"It's a type of movie that mixes romance and comedy. Just like that movie Who's That Girl." Max pointed out.
"Oh, God. That stupid movie." Lucas said as he rolled his eyes while Max raised an eyebrow at him.
"Really? You watched the movie with me when you saw it with me. Don't deny it. You started singing Causing a Commotion in the shower." Max pointed out as Mike and El started to laugh at Lucas.
"Max!" Lucas exclaimed.
"What? It's true. Erica told me all about it." Max grinned.
"Remind me to kill Erica when I see her." Lucas said.
"What'd you think of it?" El asked Max, curious about that film now.
"I think it looks like an interesting movie to watch. Now, if I can just drag Lucas with me and we're good to go." Lucas said.
"You're not dragging me to some chick flick. I can tell you guys that." Lucas said.
Max sighed a bit as she grabbed Lucas by his dark blue t-shirt and pulled him in closer towards her as a look of fear appeared on his face.
"Do you want to see me naked for the rest of your life in the 80s?" Max asked.
"Yes." Lucas said.
"Then, you're seeing this movie with me. Got it?" Max asked.
"Crystal." Lucas said as Max released him from her grasp.
"How about it, Mike? Can we go see it?" El asked as she held Mike's hand.
"Well, I don't know. We could go see Ghostbusters II." Mike said in a teasing tone.
"Mike." El whined.
"I'm kidding. We can go see When Harry Met Sally." Mike said.
"Thanks. You're the best." El said as she kissed Mike on his cheek while Lucas pretended to vomit as Max began to notice and slapped him on his arm.
"Oh, grow up, Lucas." Max said.
"Wait here, I'll go get the tickets." Mike said as he walked over to the box office to pick up the tickets for the movie."
"Hello, and welcome to The Hawk. How may I help you?" The squeaky-voiced teen asked.
"Yes. Four tickets for When Harry Met Sally, please." Mike said.
"Ah, good choice. Let me guess, your girlfriend wants to see it instead of Ghostbusters II?" The squeaky-voiced teen asked.
"Yeah, she picked it out and her friend wants to see it too." Mike said.
"Oh, you're whipped." The squeaky-voiced teen said, teasing Mike.
"Watch it now." Mike said as he glared at the squeaky-voiced teen.
The squeaky-voiced teen handed him the tickets after Mike paid for them. When Mike returned with the tickets, Lucas was still complaining about seeing the movie.
"I got the tickets." Mike said.
"If Will and Dustin find out about this…" Lucas said.
"I'm sure they won't mind." El said, trying to calm things down.
"Yeah, just relax, Lucas. Besides, I'm pretty sure that Jennifer and Suzie dragged them to a chick flick. Remember when they dragged Will and Dustin with them to go see Beaches?" Mike asked.
"You had to bring that up." Lucas groaned, as El started humming Wind Beneath My Wings.
The four walked over to the concession stand to order their snacks. Mike ordered him and El a large tub of popcorn with extra butter, two Cokes and some gummy bears for El to put in the popcorn while Lucas ordered himself a hot dog and Max some nachos and two Cokes. After they paid for their snacks, the four of them head inside the theater and took their seats before the movie starts. As they wait for the movie to start, Mike hands El her drink and the gummy bears while Lucas hands Max her drink and her nachos. They turned to El and Mike as they watched El open up the box of gummy bears and put some in the tub of popcorn.
"I cannot believe that you put gummy bears in your popcorn." Max said.
"Mike doesn't mind if I did that. I did it before with M&Ms." El said before she starts eating some popcorn.
Lucas and Max couldn't help but stare.
"What?" Mike asked.
Max managed an "ugh" in response before she rolled her eyes in disgust.
"Problem, Maxine?" Mike asked.
"That's disgusting." Max said. "And call me "Maxine" again and you'll die." Max said.
"Blah, blah, blah." El muttered. "Look, we're all here to have a great time at the movies. Let's not kill each other or judge the other person on what they're eating."
"Fine. You're right. Let's just enjoy the movie." Max said before the lights start to dim.
"Lights are dimming! Lights are dimming!" Lucas shouted.
"Lucas!" Max exclaimed, trying to keep her boyfriend quiet while El started to laugh.
As the light dimmed, the previews were shown as the four watched the trailers of upcoming movies that are coming out this year. Films like The Abyss, All Dogs Go to Heaven, Black Rain and Casualties of War are shown. But what really got Mike and Lucas excited was Back to the Future Part II as they saw the trailer. After the previews were over, the movie started to play as the four of them watched. Later, after the movie, Mike and El walked out of the theater with Lucas and Max as they talk about the movie.
"So, what did you think of the movie?" Mike asked El.
"I loved it. I thought it was a cute and funny love story." El said.
"Cute and funny?" Max asked.
"Yeah. The film addressed but it doesn't resolve the question along the lines of can men and women ever just be friends. I loved the ending where Harry shows up at Jess' New Year's Eve party and he declares his love for Sally and three months later, they end up married to each other. It's so romantic." El said.
Max just stared at El.
"What?" El asked.
"You are such a romantic." Max said.
"I am, aren't I?" El giggled.
Mike moved behind El and wrapped his arms around her waist and held her close before he kissed her on her cheek.
"And that's what I love about you." Mike said.
Lucas and Max turned to each other as they made gagging noises after watching Mike and El being cute.
"Oh, shut up." Mike said.
"You two get a room. And make sure that El doesn't fake any orgasms." Lucas said.
"Dude, seriously?" Mike glared at Lucas.
"What's an orgasm?" El asked.
"Well, remember when Sally was making those "funny noises" in the deli and everybody was witnessing this?" Max asked.
"Yeah." El said.
"Well…" Max said until Mike covered her mouth with his hand.
"It's something you shouldn't be learning from Max of all people." Mike said.
"Way to ruin the moment." El said.
"Just remember the next movie that we go see together is…" Mike said.
"Star Trek V." El said.
"Do we have to?" Mike whined.
"Yes." El grinned.
"Well, only for you, princess." Mike said as he kissed El on her cheek.
