Judy sat down and thought about what she should do in this situation. 'I tell anyone else, they will laugh at me and ridicule me, I need to prove it somehow.' She sat down on the dirt and pondered, resting her nose and mouth on her fist. She lifted her head to stare into the eyes of her vulpine companion. "Nick, if I was to place a bunch of letters on the floor, would you be able to spell your name?" Nick tilted his head in confusion, not understanding his 'assignment'. "Never mind, we'll deal with this later, for now, come here." She stood up and opened her arms up to embrace the fox. Nick walked over and slumped his head on her shoulder. Judy wrapped her arms around his neck and gently squeezed. "We'll get through this, I promise."
Nick twitched slightly but didn't want to break the hug. Judy felt it but didn't think much of it and continued. She then started to loosen her grip and separate herself from her guardian. Out of the grass then jumped out Samantha, causing Judy to jump. Judy very quickly hid behind Nick. "Sorry, didn't mean to scare you like that." She stated with a slight giggle in her voice, "Although, I didn't even know you could be scared, let alone to that degree."
"S-sorry, I-I'm still jumpy, I-I guess. Doesn't h-help that I w-was filled with enough "U-UberD-Dread" to scare t-ten rhinos." Judy tried to respond, still clutching her heart and breathing shakily. She moved back into sight and away from her 'emotional support fox'.
Samantha shook her head with a smile. "You will need to learn to separate yourself from him."
"I-I can't. I tried multiple t-times and every time, I-I start p-panicking and-and-and..."
"I get it, it's okay. It's a process, not an action." She walked over and hugged her shaking sister to try and calm her down. "It's just a phase, right?"
"I-I think so. Doc said that the drug w-will pass eventually, b-but I w-was nearly eaten alive." Judy started to break down into tears. Through a shaky and weak voice, she continued, clutching her sister tighter. "I-I was too weak to do anything." Sam wiped her tears with a kerchief that she keeps on herself at all times. "I could've died, I was supposed to die there."
"There, there." Samantha patted her sister on the head, as if she was calming down a kit. "It's all over now, right? You're home, for as long as you want or need to. You have all of us."
"I saw a lot in there. He ripped mammals apart, but the worst part, I killed someone. A poor citizen, killed by 'Zootopia's Hero with a Badge', and I didn't even care." As Judy said that, she collapsed to the ground, barely being kept up by her sister.
"I hate to be so blunt, you know I do, but it really was you or them. I'm sorry you had to go through that, and I don't even want to know what it was like but it really is over." Sam hated seeing any of her kin in such a state. "Please cheer up, in a second I'll break down, and neither of us want to see that, now do we?" She gave a light chuckle, then continued, "If you wanna talk then you know Brad is a therapist, he can help."
"N-no, no shrink!" She responded quickly, without even thinking. "I won't see a shrink, they won't help."
"No no nonononono, you misunderstood, it's your brother, you must've misheard me." Nick started to squint at the 'other' rabbit.
"Oh, yeah, I can talk with brother, b-but no shrink, r-right?"
Sam nodded gently then answered. "No 'shrink', none whatsoever." Judy started nodding rapidly. "We should start getting back, I have plenty to do, you can just rest in your room." Judy just continued to nod like a scared kit. "Oh and I came to tell you that lunch's being prepped and we need help with him." She gently manoeuvred her paw to point at the silent observer in this exchange.
"F-foxes are omnivorous, they can eat anything, we'll just need some form of protein soon, I, I don't know where a source would be for that here." That was when her train of thought returned to her. She suddenly snapped out of her gloomy mood and stood up, straight as an arrow. "He understood what I said and responded appropriately." Samantha looked perplexed at that statement. "He nodded without me nodding as a guide. Usually I nod when I ask a question, but that time I didn't."
"Umm, maybe he's learnt to do that as pattern recognition and doesn't know what it means, or just you thinking too deeply about it. I'm the optimistic one, and even I think you're thinking too positive."
"But there is a chance right? A chance he is getting better?"
"I-I guess, but I wouldn't get my hopes up." Samantha scratched under Nick's chin. "They usually don't let me get this close." She said with a smirk on her muzzle. "Oh, and about his food, ma is already dealing with that, since you told her this morning."
"Right, I did, sorry, it slipped my mind."
"I know why, so don't worry." She winked than headed home. "I'll tell ma that you're on your way." Judy nodded in appreciation. "Anything for my lil' sister."
"Not that little." She responded, pretending to be grumpy and turning her head away comically.
"Right, and I'm the one who is behaving like a kit." The two laughed and Sam walked on. "Oh and I meant physical help. Catch you in the kitchen." Judy just nodded in response.
Judy's smile faded as her sister walked away. She wiped her face with her paws then stared at them for a couple seconds, scared for what she is becoming. She clenched her fists tightly while inhaling then completely let go on the exhale. Just like that, it seemed that for as short as it was, all her issue vanished alongside her exhale. Nick laid down, with an expression that shown that he was getting bored.
His yawn snapped Judy out of her state. "Hmm? Oh, sorry, I... was daydreaming." Nick rolled his eyes at that comment. "I-I mean it." Nick didn't react that time only giving a blank stare. "Wanna run around the farm? Just don't go into the forest again, please?" Nick instantly jumped up, he was raring to go. "Of course, but I will accompany you. Okay?" Nick nodded alongside Judy. He leaned down a bit to let the rabbit climb on. She climbed on. "Stay on the inside of the fence, that's where you are allowed to be." She grabbed on tightly, waiting for the fox to rocket off into a direction.
As he stood up on all fours, he surveyed his area and made sure he knew which way he was going to go. Judy just waited impatiently, knowing what was about to happen. That was the moment Nick launched himself into a running start. He started making a sound that sounded similar to laughing, but it wasn't. It was hard to explain but Judy knew it wasn't laughter, although it held the same energy and vibe. He felt free, he felt joy. Once the run started, Judy started to open her eyes, and she started to cheer and squeal in excitement alongside the runner.
They were making enough noise to start garnering an audience of Hoppses (A/N;Hopps's? Hoppss? I don't know but you know what I mean.) They all watched in awe and confusion as the fox and rabbit sped across the outskirts of the fields. Stuart then spoke to his wife. "Seems, someone is having fun." His sentence was punctuated with a proud chuckle. "Not what I would do but, I'm not her."
Bonnie looked up from the kitchen counter and glanced through the window. "Oh dear." She instantly turned to try and stop it.
Stuart just placed a paw on Bonnie's shoulder with a smile."Bon, they're having fun, it's not a crime, and they're being somewhat safe. Imagine it being a rollercoaster."
"But what if he trips? She'll be injured."
"Our dirt is soft enough, it'll cushion the impact. They'll be fine."
"If you say so Stu, but I don't want anything happening to my kit if I could stop it."
"They're young, let them live a little."
Many of the kits and even some of the more grown up rabbits started cheering them on. No-one expected to be watching what was unfolding but everyone loved it.
Some of them even started to record what was happening, although it was doubtful any would be sent on social media. The Hopps family was notoriously private. That being said, there were some that still had their motives.
That was when Shawn left his room and checked what all the commotion was. He was still slightly tired but then quickly woke up when he saw what was happening. He marched towards the crowd and started yelling. "What do you all think you're doing?! Am I the only one that sees an issue here?"
One from the crowd responded. "They're having fun, let them." There were multiple agreements to that statement, with lines like "What does it matter to you?" or "Yeah,, they deserve to have fun as well."
Shawn shook his head in disbelief. "You have all lost your mind. Wait til all of BunnyBurrow finds out. What do you think will happen then?!" He looked annoyed and disgusted.
Stuart walked out from inside, mostly out of morbid curiosity of the sprinting fox. That was when he saw the altercation between his kits. As he walked to intervene, he realised that many started joining Shawn's side and he realised that there is no correct side. He considered his next actions and words carefully, hoping to not ostracise half his kits. He stepped in between the two groups. "All of you quiet! You're both right!" This was something most of the kits never saw and all were scared and worried. "The reason he is here, is because he needed a nice quiet space to hide, so no-one will know he is here, except anyone who lives here." He then turned to the other side. "But, I said quiet. We need it to be quiet to not attract unwanted attention. With all of you cheering like that, that would be near impossible. But with all of you arguing, how do you think they would feel, especially Judy, who wants to help everyone but would know she divided her own family." Everyone stayed silent. "If it hurts you to see a regular mammal having fun, then leave. If it doesn't then you can keep watching but quieter. Any issues?" All the rabbits shook their head.
That was when Bonnie left the warren. "Wow, I didn't know you could do that."
Stu turned to his wife. "Yeah, well, I knew it would work, if even Judy listened to it, especially when she was younger." The two of them chuckled at that a little bit.
"I'll need to remember that for later then." Bonnie chuckled, while watching the fox and rabbit duo. "But I don't know how I feel about those two together."
Stu turned around to watch the duo laugh and cheer. "I don't either, but I don't think my angry voice could stop them. Besides, do you want to talk to a feral beast?"
"But, it's so different. I don't know what to think." Bonnie admitted, feeling powerless in this situation. "But it's not like it's our choice, is it?"
"We just gotta trust the process." Stu sighed, not knowing if he liked what the aforementioned process was. He put his arm around his wife. "Even if we don't agree with it."
After a couple minutes
Nick and Judy were in a secluded area of the farm, where it seemed no-one was, and Judy signalled to stop, by tugging on his fur. She liked how barren it was, apart from some of the crops and the duo. She dropped to the floor and then stood up in front of the fox.
"So, you had your fun. But, we both know this isn't how you want to live your life. Do you even remember who you were, before you changed?"
Nick turned his head around as if he was actually thinking about that answer. He started growling as he thought harder. That was when Judy intervened. "It's okay, it's okay, if you don't remember then it's fine, it's actually expected so, don't worry about it."
Nick slowly and guiltily turned his head up, as if he did something wrong. "No no, you didn't do anything wrong, like I said, it's okay." She scratched the chin of the vulpine and stared directly into his eyes, trying to figure out where Nick was. "We will get through this, I promise."
Nick turned his head up quickly as he thought he heard something. Judy reacted accordingly and stepped a bit back, trying to avoid being hit by him. "What is it?"
"Hey, it's just me. And before you try shouting or doing anything, I wanna talk. Not like before, actually talk." Judy realised it was Shawn and reluctantly lowered Nick to not attack. "Hey, I won't change my stance on anything, as much as it may sadden you to hear, but this isn't some fairy tale where everything happens to go ones way. But that doesn't mean we can't either set rules to enact a pseudo-truce or simply find common ground."
"What's with the words?"
"Really? Do you even know what I do, outside of 'pestering the wildlife'?" Judy shook her head. "Haven't been in town?" Shawn paused and realised that she hasn't. "I'm running for BunnyBurrow mayor."
Judy reactively coughed to cover up her surprise and any disdainful reaction she could've had. "Since when?"
"I don't know, but I always enjoyed politics. Is it really any surprise I got into it?"
"No but you..."
Shawn rolled his eyes. "That's irrelevant, you did conflict resolution and I'm a politician, we can figure something out." Judy rolled her eyes at that the crossed her arms, listening attentively. "My only rules would be keep him on a short leash, considering his condition and try to not have too much fun. Fun is loud usually. We don't want that."
"Fine, but you said it yourself, his condition. He needs to be more active and large open spaces, such as fields, with that what would you consider, since I need to be with him all the time." She then paused for a couple seconds while she waited for an answer.
To her surprise, she quickly received an answer. "Firstly, I never said you can't run around, I didn't even say you can't have fun. I essentially stated that you should apply temperance."
"What does that even mean? Just say it normally!" Judy returned starting to get slightly agitated. "This is why you can't trust politicians, always speaking in double tongues and not explaining anything."
"Fine, what I said is have some self discipline. You should handle that, right?" He stated while poking her in the shoulder. "If you can't I suggest returning your badge to allow someone who deserves it a chance."
Judy's ears dropped instantly. "How dare you, do you know how much I've struggled to get to where I am now?" She then dropped down to the ground, taking a seat.
"I have a few ideas, but am I wrong? Or is that the discipline that you need for the job? Can't say I'd trust a cop that explodes after one passing comment." Nick started to slowly back away, knowing this wasn't his fight to deal with. "Correct me, but isn't it necessary for you to be able to think rationally whenever you make a choice? Why start shouting, if I assume I have only made realistic and definitely plausible assumptions?" Judy took a couple steps back and stared at her paws with uncertainty. "I just wanted to suggest a few things to help retain the farms reputation and keep your presence secret. Isn't that the point of you being here? Security, safety and secrecy?" He took a slight sharp breath and sat down next to Judy. "You are a great but flawed officer, you are the one that solved the nighthowler case after all, right? So you should understand where I am coming from? Back in the warren, we can shout at each other, it is easier that way, but I don't want the only lasting impression you have of me to be an irrational dumb rabbit that got into office by the power of luck and reputation."
"Doesn't matter." Judy spat back. "I get easily overwhelmed with emotions. Back in the force, he was my anchor. He kept me grounded when push comes to shove. Sure he was quite a pawful and definitely a piece of work, though he'd probably call himself a piece of art in response. Furthermore, I don't know if I am a good cop, I broke a city in two and fled in response, remember?"
Shawn chuckled. "True, that was an event. Didn't dissuade you, did it? "
Judy raised her head at that question. "I guess I didn't, first thing I did was go back for him."
"I think the average mammal would go back to the partner they completely crushed."
"You said I'm flawed how? Apart from the obvious."
"Everyone is flawed, don't take that as a fursonal attack. But you did ask the right type of mammal that question." He stated with a smirk on his muzzle. "I already stated you are easily irrational, but you are also very... hmm, how do I phrase this? Short-sighted." Judy raised an eyebrow to that. "You don't consider consequence or even whether your thoughts are correct. You don't think through things well enough in my opinion. Great example, wide open area that can be used? Have you tried the second basement, no-one goes there and that isn't used for storage so, I must inquire, have you even considered it?"
Judy scoffed, disbelieving she was outwitted in such a long-winded method. "You just tried to give yourself time to think, how dare you, you damn trickster."
"Nah, just a politician." Both chuckled at that joke. "But seriously, consider that option, it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Win-win situation. If he was to go outside, try taking him out after dark, foxes are nocturnal."
"Heh, you know your fair bit."
"A common thought is that I do it to be more accurately specieist. I assure you, not when I speak like this. My opinions can't distort the city too much."
"Left or right leaning?"
"Wouldn't you like to know? Well, I'm fursonally a soft conservative, don't see issues with either but, this is a rural town, mostly filled with right leaning mammals. Easier to win an election like that. What about you?"
"Me? I don't know, I flipflop constantly. But, that doesn't mean I'll vote for you because you're family."
Shawn put his paws up. "Ya got me. But, if you do watch the debates and other political panels, I'll try convince you as well." He smirked deviously. He laid down on the ground. "Besides, I'm probably not the most morally corrupt individual in our family."
"That says a lot."
"Just know I have my suspicions and ideas. I'd like to think I know a lie when I see one, just harder to prove it." "Anyway, gotta get back now, wouldn't want anyone that I sympathise with preds." He got up and was about to walk away
Judy shook her head and grabbed his paw. "There isn't anything wrong with it. You know, sympathising with preds."
"I know, that's why I don't have an issue with you, just it can't change immediately."
"Who are you trying to convince with that act? Mum an' Pop both don't have an issue with him, so who?"
He crouched down and placed both his paws on his sister's shoulders. He stared directly into her eyes to show how serious he was."As much as I know, you'd hate to hear it, it's better to hear the truth right? I have an issue with preds, I'm able to overlook it but that doesn't change me, I don't want to be the bad guy in your eyes but lying would make it worse." He got up and turned around. "But, if it means anything, I believe you understand my viewpoint."
Judy sighed, "Yeah, I do."
He tapped his cheek then said "I'd be surprised if you didn't." He disappeared into the crops and returned to the house.
"That conversation isn't finished yet." Judy muttered to herself. She then punched the ground of dirt, covering the bottom of her fist in mud. "We're nowhere near done." She then stood up and returned to watch the fox she was meant to watch. As she realised he tried to stay away, she calmed down and cleaned her paw. "It's okay now, I promise." Nick cautiously approached, unsure if she was being honest or not. She stood up and stared directly into his eyes. "Be honest, am I an issue?"
A/N:Welp, I finally finished this chapter and want to try to quickly write the next chapter.
Furthermore, I really have no idea what to write here half the time and just make things up for added external stuff, so if you do ignore these feel to continue to do so.
Next will probably be a continuation of my other story.
But for now, I hope you all enjoyed this and wish you all a good one, see ya lads.
