Welcome back everyone! Out next Guest in the Hollow is the one who's about to kick the In-Birth's butts in! Our Grim Reaper from Gungrave, Beyond The Grave!

I first heard about the series from seeing there's a preview for the anime on a Geneon Preview DVD, prompting me to look up the series and I thought it's main character was cool. However, I didn't play Gungrave or Gungrave Overdose. My first Gungrave game is the recent installment Gungrave G.O.R.E. (Gunslinger Of REsurrection). When the game came out, I heard it wasn't great, so I waited for a Price Drop and the Patch Update first, but after those moments came and when I played it, it's a good game. Simple, but good. I even enjoyed playing as the other two characters apaet from Grave (Bunji and Quartz).

So, why not see how Grave handles things? One thing to note is that Grave... isn't very talkative. He CAN speak, but he usually keeps quiet. Fortunately, his partner Quartz will be in the story as well to make up for it. Whenever a character speaks through a communicator, is will be stylized like this.

One more thing, this will be post Gungrave G.O.R.E., so Spoiler Alert! Secondly, while Gungrave G.O.R.E. does have Japanese Voices, I'll be using the English Voices this time around since I think it's more fitting for Gungrave. With that, how will our gunslinging Anti-Hero go through the Hollow Night? Stick around...

Character Appearance: Grave is a tall and bulking man with unnatural long limbs. He wears a futuristic dark purple jacket with a lapel coller that remains open along with shoulder pads and a metal band. Underneath it is a white long-sleeved shirt and wears dark pants, saddlers that holds his guns and black gloves. He also wears a piar of glasses with the left side being colored white.

Animations

Intro 1: Grave stands before his opponent as he silently pulls out his pistols from his saddlers, twirling once before standing still.

Intro 2: The Death Hauler drops from the sky, causing dust to rise up. Once the dust clears, Grave is standing there all set to fight.

Round Loss: Grave rises to one knee, not ready to go down.

Time Over Loss: Grave kneels down on his feet, worn down by his opponent.

Round Victory: Does an Equilibrium style pose.

Match Victory: Grave puts his guns back into their saddlers as he walks away from his defeated opponent.

Vs. Orie: Quartz: "If the Licht Kries are here, then things might get difficult. Make sure you avoid her and others like her from now on, okay?"

Vs. Gordeau: Quartz: "That was Amnesia's top fighter, right? Well, he's not called the Harvester of Greed for nothing, but you dealt with guys tougher then him, so nothing to worry about."

Vs. Eltnum (Alternate): Quartz: "I wonder if she's from a mental hospital? She's talking about things I don't even know about... and why does it sound like she knows about our personal history?"

Vs. Akatsuki (Alternate): Quartz: "That guy looked like a lot of fun! If I ever see him myself, I'd like to go a few rounds with him myself! Martial Arts Vs. Military Martial Arts! That would be awesome!"

Carmine: "Damn... I'm getting blood from you, but it looks like your bruning off if for some reason. Just what in the world are you!?"

Orie: "El-Alcangel... I have heard rumors about you and your crusade to stop a deadly drug. Even if it's to stop corrupt people, you still slaughtered countless people... therefore, I'm placing you under arrest."

Gordeau: "Damn, I heard about you and certainly know how to kick some serious ass! Unfortunately for you, your opponent jusr so happened to be me this time."

Merkava: "I've never consumed a Deadman before, so I can't help but wonder what sort of flavor you'll give me. May as well sate my curiosity..."

Vatista: "Your vitals are nearly non-existant, yet you move around despite all of that... I must look into this bizarre phenomenon after I consult with the program."

Hilda: "I hear that you're a dead man, but now you're officially double dead! Oh, don't worry about your "ward", she's next!"

Nanase: "You hit like a truck and you certainly must weigh like a truck too! It literally took everything I got to finally knock you off your feet!"

Byakuya: "You must be the legendary Gunslinger of Resurrection I heard about. You really shouldn't have taken your eyes off me because I can avoid gunfire pretty easily..."

Byakuya (Alternate): Tsukuyomi: "You're fortunate that I'm not interested in you or anything related to the criminal underworld. Let's go Byakuya, we're done wasting time here."

Eltnum: "You've had a tough reawakening, but look at you now. A few patch ups later and your soul is now burning brighter then ever! A true veteran never gives up after all!"

Akatsuki: "It doesn't matter how many hailstorm of bullets I must run through, I will overcome your gunfire and take you down with my honed fists!"

Super Attacks

EXS Attack - Executioner's Blood: Grave rapid fires his guns simultaneously at his opponent.

Infinite Worth - Doom's Rain: Grave uses his coffin to fire six homing missiles at his opponent. If Grave is hit before he fires, no missiles will come out. Grave can be interrupted before he fires all six, but it becomes risky as the shots will follow the opponent until they hit them, block or not, or are destroyed with a projectile.

Infinite Worth EXS - Seed Fall Death Sentence: Once the Flash Field connects, Grave will knock his opponent high into the sky and then he picks up his coffin, which turns into a large-calibur sniper rifle. He then shoots the opponent and afterward, his coffin transforms again, this time into a Ray Gun. Grave then fires a giant laser beam at them before they hit the ground, sending them flying across the screen as the attack ends.

Unique Traits

Dodge Roll: Grave's Force Function allows Grave to dive toward or roll away from his opponent, allowing him to dodge projectiles. Inputting the command input to fire his Guns will allow Grave to shoot four bullets while dodging, making it good to punish opponents.

Chip Damage: All of Grave's regular and Special Attacks will cause chip damage like Hyde's sword.

Fury Mode: If the opponent is on their Match Point and if Grave's health falls to 30%, Grave will enter Fury Mode, gaining increased attack and defense power. This will even happen if both Grave and his opponent are both on Match Point.

Hilda Arcade Story Interaction

*Hilda wanders through a new area until she comes face to face with a tall man, carrying a pair of large handguns and lugging a huge coffin tied by chains on his arms*

Grave: "..."

Hilda: "Well now, you certainly look edgy. What brings you out here?"

*A voice suddenly comes out, but not from the man himself, but from a receiver of sorts*

Quartz: "Well Paradox, you definitely picked the wrong guy to run into tonight."

Hilda: "Huh? The man didn't say anything? That voice came from a communicator... am I right?"

Quartz: "Give the lady a prize. Yup, I'm speaking through Grave's communicator. Unfortunately for you, I'll be the last thing you'll ever here."

Hilda: "Grave? I'm guessing you're talking about tall, dark and gruesome here? I'll admit, he looks tough, but he's no an In-Birth with no EXS powers. What chance does he have?"

Quartz: "I'm guessing you never heared of El-Alcangel?"

Hilda: "El-Alcangel? I've heared that somewhere before..."

"Ah! That's right! You're that Resistance group who fought the Raven Clan! You even got rid of that disgusting SEED drug! That means this man is..."

Quartz: "Beyond The Grave. The Grim Reaper and the Gunslinger of Resurrection. Like I said, you picked the wrong guy to run into. He's beaten far worse than you."

Hilda: "Hah! I'll admit that running into the legendary Grave is surprising, but I'm not gonna back down because of that! I hope you're watching little girl, because I'm gonna send this deadman back to you in a casket!"

Quartz: "We'll see about that. All right Grave! Smack her down!"

Grave: "Hmmm..."

*The scene transitions to the fight*

Beyond The Grave Arcade Story

Prologue [Location: Skyscraper's Rooftop]

*Grave and his partner Quartz are overlooking the city of Kanzakai while waiting on standby from their boss to inform them on what there mission is*

Quartz: "Kanzakai... hard to believe I never heard of this place before..."

"It's been some time since we took down Raven Clan and Who-Knows-Who, along with the SEED and now we're here because of a rumor that SEED might be here despite destroying the source."

"Not to mention Mika still has it in her body... well, like I'm not one to talk considering my right arm."

*Suddenly, beeping sounds are coming from Grave and Quartz's communicators with the two answering them*

Mika: "Grave, Quartz, this is Mika. Do you read me?"

Quartz: "Loud and clear Boss. We're both in position and ready to move out."

Mika: "Good... I know it's sudden since we destroyed SEED, but the rumor of SEED being in this city concerns me, so I need you both to investigate this Kanzakai just in case..."

Quartz: "Speaking of SEED, are you doing okay? No pain? Are you feeling well?"

Mika: "Much better than when I was in Who-Knows-Who's captivity, but I at least understand what it was like for you when your arm was infected."

Quartz: "Thanks for for sympathizing with me, but it's not bad anymore since I didn't become an Orgman. Besides, we can get through this!"

Mika: "Right, thank you. Grave, you and Quartz will head into the city and find out if SEED is really there or not. The two of you will then rendezvous later and rely what information you gathered."

"One more thing to note, these "In-Births" I heard about are not like our previous enemies, so you are to only wound these people. Do not kill unless necessary. Understood?"

Grave: "Hmmm..."

Quartz: "Looks like Grave understands and I got it too."

Mika: "Keep your communicator turned on and help out Grave when he needs it. I'm counting on you two."

Quartz: "Leave it to us Boss! All right Grave, let's get this show on the road! Take care down there!"

Grave: "Hmpf..."

*As soon as Quartz leaves, Grave jumps off the building as the 1st Stage, with the first Pre-Set Opponent, loads up*

Stage 1

Vs. Carmine [Location: Street of Office Buildings]

*Grave eventually lands in the streets after leaping down and as soon as he stands up, he looks around the area*

Grave: "..."

?: "What in the living hell was that?"

*Grave turns around to see a young man with red hair, red eyes and red arms*

Carmine: "You gotta be really insane to jump down from a building like that! Granted, I saw you jumping from wall to wall to descend down here, but god damn!"

Grave: "..."

Carmine: "Uh, hello!? Are you deaf or something, I'm talking to you!"

*Grave ignores Carmine and turns to leave, which doesn't set will with the red colored In-Birth*

Carmine: "Ignoring me, are you!?"

*Carmine attacks with a Blood Spike while Grave shoots it down*

Carmine: "Oh, you respond to that? Well, that's fine by me! You may not have EXS Powers, but I can tell you're something else entirely!"

*A beep occurs in Grave's communicator, with Quartz talking through it*

Quartz: "Grave! I heard a gunshot across the city, I take it that means you ran into trouble already?"

Carmine: "Huh? Where's that voice coming from? Is that you!?"

Quartz: "Wait a moment... red hair, rotten behavior... yup, if what the intel from our soldiers says is true, that's Carmine Prime. He can use blood as a weapon and even take it away from his opponents."

Carmine: "You spying on me you little bitch!? Come out and fight me!"

Quartz: "Oh, I would love too, but unfortunately you're dealing with Grave."

"Go ahead and knock him down! But remember, don't kill the guy, okay?"

Grave: "Hmpf..."

Carmine: "I hope that coffin you're carrying is empty, because you're going to be put in there when I'm done with you!

*The scene transitions to the fight*

Stage 3

Vs. Linne [Location: Cathedral of Far East]

*Grave walks into a Cathedral where Quartz calls him upon the communicator*

Quartz: "Grave, you doing okay so far?"

Grave: "..."

Quartz: "I'll take that as a yes. Anyway, I ran into a few guys on my end. Thought I'd go down easy just because I'm a girl. Well, serves them right for thinking I'm easy prey."

"Now then, I'm sure you know that there are three groups in this city. The one rumored to possess SEED is called Amnesia. There leader is a woman named Hilda the Paradox."

"Not sure what there goal is, but that's why we're here."

"The other two groups are Night Blade and Licht Kries. There job is to protect the Hollow Night from being misused, so they're not our enemy. However, they won't take kindly to us for one reason or another, so keep your guard up."

*As soon as Quartz finishes, a young girl steps out from the shadows*

Linne: "You're right. I don't take your presence "too kindly" as you say."

Quartz: "A little kid? No, If I'm not mistaking, you're the 'Phantom Princess' of the Night Blade, aren't you?"

Linne: "Who're you calling a Phantom!? Kids these days..."

"Anyway, so this guy here is the one people are talking about? No EXS powers, yet fights like a truck. Wald would be thrilled if he ran into you..."

Quartz: "Excuse me, but is there any reason you're here? Does it have something to do with Grave?"

Linne: "You can say something like that. I don't dabble in the criminal underworld, but I heard a thing or two about El-Alcangel. Heard you took down a "legitimate" business that deals with a drug. Must say, congrats."

Quartz: "You being sarcastic?"

Linne: "No. I'm sincere. I would say it's overkill to kill a bunch of people over cigarettes, but I heard that this SEED is a dangerous substance and you did the world a favor getting rid of it."

Quartz: "Well, we can't let innocent people get turned into monsters after all. But I'm guessing you're not here to thank us."

Linne: "That's right. I'm here to put the big guy here to rest."

Quartz: "... Care to repeat that?"

Linne: "I can tell he died once and was brought back to life. I don't know who did it, but now that he's completed his mission, it's time to let him pass on."

Quartz: "Says who!? He's Mika's guardian! I don't know what happened a few years back when they forst met, but Grave is important to Mika! Don't you get that!?"

Linne: "She can resent me all she wants, but the dead need to stay dead. Now, let's make this quick... if you just stand still and take it, then it will be painless for you..."

*Grave raises his arms of his own accord ready to fire at Linne*

Grave: "I won't leave Mika alone..."

Quartz: "You tell her Grave! You don't get to decide what happens here!"

Linne: "So you can speak? Looks like you have some ego after all..."

"I was going to make it quick, but now you left me no choice but to get rough. Unfortunately for you, those guns won't save you... resent me if you wish, but I'm respecting the laws of nature here..."

"Besides, I shouldn't be here in this world either..."

Quartz: "Be careful Grave! The Phantom Princess uses incredible speed as her EXS Power and she's skilled at close range! Keep your distance and you should be fine! Now show her what you got!"

*The scene transitions to the fight*

Stage 6

Vs. Yuzuriha [Location: Shopping Mall]

*Grave wanders though a mall as he tracks down Amnesia's leader until Quartz rings him up through the communicator*

Quartz: "Hey Grave, I got some good news about what's happening here so far!"

"It would appear that there's no sign of SEED here, meaning that this was all just a rumor. However, there appears to be something far more powerful here, it might be even more dangerous than SEED."

'What makes it worse is that Paradox is still the source of this trouble, so we know she's still our enemy, even if there's no SEED here. Therefore, it's best you met up with me at the rendezvous point so we can discuss a plan with Mika.'

*After that, a young woman appears before Grave before he's about to leave*

Yuzuriha: "Aha! So you're the one that's been causing trouble this night! Am I right?"

Quartz: "Great... another In-Birth interrupting our conversation. Who're you supposed to be?"

Yuzuriha: "I'm a just a Shrine Maiden trying to keep people like you from causing trouble in the Hollow Night. I heard that a guy with a coffin and a Chinese girl with blonde hair and a blue arm are causing a ruckus here."

"And it looks like I found the coffin guy and I'm guessing the girl with the blue arm is you on that communicator, right?"

Quartz: "Looks like word spreads fast. My name is Quartz and this guy here is Grave."

Yuzuriha: "Grave? He definitely looks... "dark"... anyway, I'm just here to give you guys the boot!"

Quartz: "Look, these In-Birth guys are causing us trouble. Granted, we had to fight some of them, but only because they're impededing us in trying to deal with Paradox."

Yuzuriha: "Yeah... well you guys wouldn't be the first who wants to beat up Paradox, but if your going around causing trouble, I'm not gonna allow that.

*Grave readies himself toward Yuzuriha*

Grave: "Hmpf..."

Yuzuriha: "Really, you're going to use firearms against me? I'm afraid it's no match for my "Dual Moon's One Blade Drawing Style" of swordsmanship. So, I hope you're ready for a good night's sleep, because once I knock you out, I'm gonna teach your friend a lesson too!"

"Let's kick these guys outta here Ayame!"

Quartz: "Well, at least she's not trying to kill you..."

"Her fighting stlye looks to be a more refined variation of Yensen the Boostmaster. More calm, focused and not bloodthirsty. That means she's a bit more... challenging. Keep your guard up!"

*The scene transitions to the fight*

Stage 9

Vs. Orie [Location: Rumbling Factories]

*Grave arrives at a factory where he meets up with Quartz*

Quartz: "Hey Grave, looks like you did well tonight!"

Grave: "..."

Quartz: "Now that you're here, we should call Mika and let her know what we found."

*After a few beeps, the two managed to contact Mika*

Mika: "Grave, Quartz. How did it all go?"

Quartz: "I say it all went well. We can confirm that there's no sign of the SEED here."

Mika: "No SEED... good, then it really is gone... apart from you and me..."

Quartz: "Hey, no need to get yourself down... besides I'm okay now at least and you're safe too. Besides you're not alone here. You got me, Grave, my grandfather, Dr. Aso, Zell and even those two guys you're friends with."

Mika: "You're right. Thank you Quartz. You too Grave."

*Grave gives a small smile back*

Quartz: "Anyway, while it's true Paradox doesn't have SEED, she's still dangerous. I managed to find one of Amnesia's goons and he told me that she's trying to use some bizaree gate to become immortal in an effort to "free" the Hollow Night from Night Blade and Licht Kries."

Mika: "That sounds like an excuse to obtain power to me..."

Quartz: "No kidding... what's your command?"

Mika: "Destroy this Gate and prevent Paradox from obtaining immortality. That's what we should do. I'll try to get the dropship in position to pick you both up."

Quartz: "Got it Boss! We'll signal you when we taken care of things!"

*Mika hangs up*

Quartz: "Okay Grave, I also got intel of where Paradox is, let's hurry!"

*Suddenly, a young woman with blue hair stands in front of them*

Orie: "I don't think so."

Quartz: "Ugh... what now?"

Orie: "You two are members of El-Alcangel, correct? Beyond The Grave and Cheni Angel?"

Quartz: "!? And what if we are?"

Orie: "I am Orie Valadier, 5th Executor of the Licht Kries and I'm placing you both under arrest for murder and destruction of property!"

Quartz: "Licht Kries! Oh that's great! How did you even find us?"

Orie: "It's not hard when you both have unusual characteristics. I even heard you were infected by this terrible drug called SEED."

Quartz: "Yeah, but it's under control. Besides, do you even know why we fought the Raven Clan? To get rid of SEED, prevent innocent people from becoming monsters and keep the world from being consumed by it."

Orie: "But that doesn't justify killing so many people!"

Quartz: "I'm not justifying it! Besides, those guys were Yakuza scumbags would wouldn't lose sleep if they killed us or anyone innocent who opposed the Raven Clan, including you!"

"Besides, we're not out for Paradox's life, we just want to stop her and be on our way. That. Is. It."

Orie: "Even so... while it's true that we won't need to worry about SEED anymore and while there are black-hearted people like that in this world..."

"I can't turn a blind eye to El-Alcangel. Put down your weapons and surrender peacefully."

*Grave stands in front of Quartz and raises his guns toward Orie*

Quartz: "Grave, what are you doing?"

Grave: "..."

Quartz: "Let me guess, you want to handle this, right?"

Grave: "Hm..."

Quartz: "Alright, I'll go on ahead. Meet me inside the biggest building at the Street of Office Buildings. I'll see you there!"

*Quartz runs ahead while Grave readies himself before the Executor*

Orie: "It won't matter if she runs, I will catch her!"

"But first, I will detain you and the rest of El-Alcangel! Justice will be served this day!"

Grave: "Grr..."

*The scene transitions to the fight*

Final Stage

Vs. Hilda [Location: Altar of Light and Dark]

*Grave meets up with Quartz at the mysterious Gate that she mention*

Quartz: "Grave! You made it! Well, it looks like this is the so-called "Gate to the Abyss", one of two things Paradox needs to become immortal. The other thing is some kind of sword which she doesn't have."

"All we need to do is bust this damn gate apart! Ready Grave?"

*But before Grave could do anything, Hilda emerges before them and stands before them*

Hilda: "That's not going to happen, not while I'm here."

Quartz: "Damn! Here I thought things would be easy! I'm guessing you're Hilda?"

Hilda: "That's right. You must be the "bombshell" lady that beat up one of my comrades from Amnesia and this tall, dark and gruesome man must be the infamous Beyond The Grave of El-Alcangel."

Quartz: "Yeah, we're from El-Alcangel. You must know thay fighting us will not end well for you. Even though we don't use EXS, we're still more than capable of taking you on!"

Hilda: "I'm well aware of Grave's reputation, which is why I've come prepared!"

*Noises are heard as low-ranking members of Amnesia start coming out*

Quartz: "Amnesia goons!"

Hilda: "Men, get ready to take them down!"

Quartz: "Grave! I'll handle these punks, you take care of Hilda and thay Gate while I hold these guys off!"

Grave: "Hmpf..."

Hilda: "So, you're letting the girl fight them off? How cruel of you..."

Grave: "..."

Hilda: "Not talkative, are you? Oh well, I suppose a silent scream will suffice! Prepare to become worm food!"

Grave: "We will see..."

*The scene transitions to the final fight*

Aftermath

[Location: Altar of Light and Dark]

*Grave has severely weakend Hilda, but she's not ready to go down yet*

Hilda: "Argh! Not bad Grave! However, it will take more than that to bring the mighty Hilda the Paradox!"

"Time to Die-"

*Suddenly, Hilda is knocked down by three unconscious Amnesia members flying into her and is now stuck underneath them as she's too weak to push them off*

"Argh! What in the world!?"

Quartz: "Heh! You really thought these punks could take me down!"

Hilda: "What!? You fought off all of my guards here!? Impossible!"

Quartz: "And I know you can't do anything now! Grave, take down this wretched Gate!"

Hilda: "No! Don't you dare you decomposing piece of rotten flesh!"

*Grave transforms his Death Haluer Coffin into the Seed Fall Laser and prepares to fire*

Grave: "My name is Brandon Heat."

*The screen turns blue as Grave destroys the Gate to the Abyss, ending the Hollow Night*

Hilda: "Brandon Heat...? Impossible... I heard about him but..."

"Didn't he die over 20 years ago...?"

Ending

[Location: Skyscraper's Rooftop]

*Grave and Quartz are waiting on the rooftops when a Dropship lands nearby with Mika coming out to greet them*

Mika: "Grave, Quartz. You did it."

Quartz: "Of course we did! Paradox and her goon never stood a chance!"

"Although, now we're officially on Night Blade and Licht Kries' radar since we beat up a member from each group. Not to mention Amnesia will probably want us dead too."

Mika: "I don't think it will be a problem once we're away from Kanzakai. Their focus seems to be here and not us. Besides, we have other matters to attend too."

Quartz: "Right. We need to get Grave all patched up once we get back. He definitely deserves the rest after all of this."

*The scene cuts back to the Hong Kong Base, where Mika, Quartz and Dr. Aso are taking care of things while Grave is hooked up to the Blood Transfusion Machine*

Quartz: 'With that, our little adventure in Kanzakai has come to an end with us having triumphed over the In-Birth's.'

'Grave is once again in a hibernating state until we need him again. It's kind of sad seeing in this state. One of the cons about being a Deadman.'

'I know it's because he's an important part of Mika's life just as she's important to him.'

'I even recall that Mika once told me something about Grave. The very first words he ever spoke to her when he saved her from a SEED infection back then.'

'Mika's fight is far from over, but when the time comes, I know she won't be alone as she has Grave with her...'

*As Grave sleeps, he recalled what he said to Mika when he saved her*

Grave: 'You must live, Mika.'

With that, Grave has kicked the asses of the Hollow Night! While he's a simple character (in the games at least), he's a pretty badass dude and is a cool character.

While Gungrave G.O.R.E. didn't do well at launch, it's certainly doing well now thanks to the patches and updates. If you're willing to give it a go, I'd say try out Gungrave G.O.R.E. if you can!
