Wolford left the medical room and stared blankly at the ceiling. He then pulled out the pill and swallowed it. "It never tastes nice." He commented bluntly and sharply. After the pill found its way down the wolf's throat, he headed towards the interrogation room, where McHorn and Delgato sat staring at each other, both unhappy to see the other. They both quickly turned their heads towards the door. "Hey guys, how was the last few days?" It took all of his will and might to not just snap at the rhino that was sitting in front of him.
"Are you sure you should be here?" Delgato asked.
"Yeah, wouldn't want another accident." McHorn added, trying to get the wolf to snap.
"Yeah, it will be mostly fine."
"Mostly?"
"If he doesn't try and attack, fully." Delgato stood up, shook his head and rested his paw on the wolf's shoulder.
"You don't need to do this, just go."
"I'm the only one that knows him well enough." Delgato once again shook his head when he heard that. He took one look at Wolford the turned to the door to leave. Wolford looked at the one way window and waved. McHorn huffed once to show that he was unamused.
On the other side of the window, Bogo, Fangmeyer and now Delgato stood, unsure of how to respond to the wave. In the end, the two felines just looked at the chief, who also huffed disapprovingly.
"So Mike, what do you want?"
"So, I won't bother with procedure in this situation, I think we know each other well enough and you committed a few things more than just hitting my head."
McHorn seemed to have not reacted to the comments that were made. He just sat motionless and waited for the wolf to get impatient.
"Why did you do it?" Silence continued. "We were partners and that's how you treated me?"
"You were lucky."
"How so?"
"I already said too much."
"That never truly worked did it." He sighed, pained to see what he thought was his closest friend betray him and cuffed in the seat in front of him. "You know, I never truly thought I would see you like this." He forced a smile and sighed through his nose. "How about you make it easy for an old friend?"
"We were colleagues not friends." Mchorn responded bluntly. His face was still unflinching and emotionless. "It was all strictly professional."
"Aww, that hurt my feelings, all those times we spent together doing fun things like arresting criminals or stake outs or-"
"The stake outs were boring, especially with you blabbering on about who knows what."
Wolford gripped his forehead and breathed slowly. "You could've said something about it then." He responded calmly, trying to remain composed. "Why didn't you?" He then asked genuinely and curiously.
"Did I have to? You could've realised, no? I thought we were friends, wouldn't friends know things like that?"
"Hey, you are extremely stoic, why and how would I know about your hidden emotions?" Wolford blurted out calmly, trying to not break.
Delgato looked through the window. "Wow, he is really holding it all together. I was sure he would snap by now, you know, with him being very aggressive and all." He then sat back down.
Back in the actual interrogation room, Wolford stared into the eyes of the grey rhino that was seated before him. He was thinking what to say but was feeling a massive blank from the fact that he didn't truly know the rhino as well as he thought. "Was everything you said a lie?"
"No, I was honest with you now and before." Wolford then lowered his head as he heard that.
"I'm sorry for not being a better friend." Michael then stated morosely. He then raised his head and smiled weakly, "Could you forgive a fool like me?"
McHorn was completely blind-sided by the direction Wolford took, he wasn't expecting this, actually no-one was. In the adjacent room, the two felines sat with their mouth agape. "This is still Wolford, right?" Juliet asked completely flabbergasted by the actions she witnessed.
McHorn nearly let the mask slip and lowered his eyes ever so slightly. There were then a few seconds of silence in the room. He then reconnected eye contact. "I'm not answering any questions."
"Don't be like this, you are so much better than this, I know you are trying to play me, that's just how well you know me, you actually care." Wolford spoke while gesticulating with his arms. His body then started to relax, "You are so much better than me." he commented lightly, realising this is what he believed to be the truth. "Don't play me. Let's just talk like adults for once."
"Hah, that's rich from you, I always try to be the adult but you, you. You are the one that is less than professional, the one that slows us down. You are the one that talks to random individuals when we could be helping someone in need." 'Bingo. I finally found his button.'. "Now, tell me how you are gonna be an adult, for once in your sad pathetic good for nothing life."
Wolford corrected his posture in the seat and looked on with zero emotion in his face, mirroring the rhino before him."Well, I can see you are clearly being an adult right now, so lets begin. I will listen to every point you make and treat it with the utmost seriousness. I will follow every procedure I need to and treat you like a nobody and by the way, striking your partner on the head, kitnapping two police officers and snapping the neck of an enforcer of the law is clearly 'helping someone in need'."
"Maybe I wouldn't have done it if you were better, did you think of that?"
"Could you explain what you mean by that?"
"Gladly, maybe if I would feel I am using my time correctly and not just wasting it in some rundown restaurant, then maybe I wouldn't join them."
"I asked if you wanted to go there, you agreed with little thought, that means it wasn't an issue for you, or you wanted to use it as an excuse right now." McHorn huffed in annoyance. "By the way, join who?"
"The Laws of Nature. They will come for you all." He then turned to the window. "All of you, especially you, chief. Don't think I don't know you are there, you may run a tight ship, but even then there could be a few screws loose, making the ship sink, and trust me this ship will sink, this is only the beginning."
"So what's next?"
"You'll see when the time comes."
In the adjacent room, Pawson enterred, "What's happening?"
"Wolford is doing well to keep it together. Honestly, I'm proud of him."
"Just before he is done, I need to talk to him, now that I'm officially not on break." Bogo stared directly at the talking raccoon. Jacob instantly realised that this meant that Bogo knew something was up. He pulled out his phone and prepared the sound recorder. "I doubt he would talk to me normally."
Back in the interrogation room, Wolford carried on asking his questions. "I meant for you, what's next for you?"
"We'll see, maybe this will all blow over and I will be pardoned." McHorn smiled lightly at that.
"You don't care that you did what you did, do you?" Wolford spat out quietly.
"I'd do anything for a better tomorrow. Anything."
"Alright, I think I'm do-" Just then Pawson walked through the door. "You wanna continue this?"
"Yeah, just one quick question." Jacob turned to the rhino, "Just who is Raccson or as you might be calling him 'Master Storm'?" The Rhino froze. "Yeah, I know about him, what can you tell me about him?"
"How did you see him?"
"Irrelevant."
"I think it's very relevant."
"Master Raccson, leader of the Laws of Nature within this region, to my knowledge, what do you know about him?" Jacob asked again.
"I-I-I can't talk about him."
"I think you can." He then turned to Wolford. "Give me a second to talk privately." Wolford nodded then stood up.
"I have no idea what you are planning or doing, but I trust you."
"I'm gonna turn the mic off as well."
"But tell me after."
Jacob chose his words carefully, "I don't think I will be able." The raccoon smiled and winked.
The wolf left. He walked into the adjacent room. "I trust him, he had Gabriel completely stuck."
"You did well, partner." Fangmeyer complemented genuinely and sincerely.
"She's right, you really held yourself together. I'm proud of ya mate." Delgato smiled, "We'll get a drink tonight, how's that sound? To celebrate you being a better mammal."
"No need, I'd rather not. We will have our work cut out for us and alcohol shouldn't mix with medicine." Delgato laughed and rolled his eyes.
"It better be medicine." He then joked. "You trust the rookie?"
"I already said so, I do, he knows something he shouldn't, we can capitalise on it."
"Or it's a double bluff and he is also against us, you never know."
"I guess you never do." His smile faded. "I'll be doing some paperwork."
Bogo kept looking through the window but the others turned to look at the wolf as he was leaving. "Okay, we'll see you later buddy."
"Yeah, see you all later." Michael left.
Fangmeyer sat for another couple of seconds. "I don't like this, I need to find him." She then tried to catch up with the wolf.
"There's definitely something between those two." Bogo grunted in response. "Chief, what do you see?"
"Nothing of value, they are just talking."
Back in the interrogation room, Pawson was pushing the rhino as much as he could. "They can't hear us anymore, so you can tell me what you know. Now speak."
"You answer my question first, then maybe I will decide."
"He asked me to join."
"I don't know why he would, there is nothing special about you."
"Let me finish, he wants me to join to be his replacement."
"WHAT?!" He shook his head. "He wants you to join? No, he wants you to be his replacement?"
"I want an explanation."
"I don't understand, he is a smart strategic, actually was, individual." McHorn looked completely surprised. "Why would he?"
"He wants to teach me."
"When?"
"This morning, I was saving the two you kitnapped."
"Isn't that a confession to crime?"
"You need to break a few eggs to make an omelette."
"Let the police handle this, the actual police, maybe if your lucky, you would get Wolford."
"What do you mean, if you're lucky?"
"Simple, as much as I'd say he can be a little flippant, he is dedicated to this force, honestly, he was a great cop, and in my humble opinion, very few can compete with him, including Hopps."
"He'd want to hear that."
"I feel I was a little harsh on him."
"Why keep him alive then?"
"Well, he said it himself, we're friends, partners. That kind of bond cannot be just broken suddenly. I'll miss him but it needed to be done."
"What am I getting myself into?"
"Why would I tell you?"
"What about the rabbit announcer?"
"You really were there. Damn. Very few know about him."
"So I'm one of the lucky ones?"
"Yeah, shame you turned the recorder off." McHorn smiled. 'Little do you know, it's all recorded. All of it.' "He is just demented, psychotic. Sure he can't fight but I still wouldn't want him in the same room as me."
"Sadistic?"
"Yeah, I guess you could say that."
"What would happen if I replaced Raccson?"
"You would need to lead the attack to this place."
"Lead? As in, it's not occupied yet?"
"Mm, but he is really good at what he does."
"How does he do it?"
"Ask him yourself."
"I think I will, next time I see him."
"You say it confidently."
"Of course, he said he will meet me soon."
"Anything else?"
"How did you do it?"
"You saw how I did it."
"Not physically but … you know."
"Lie. Lie to yourself. Convince yourself that your lie is true, then it's easy."
"You're supposed to be dead, what happens now?"
"You said it, I'm gonna be killed at some point, who knows when or how."
"Then, see you on the other side."
"You are curious about it, but not in a police way. Know what you are signing up for first."
"I think I'll consider my options, but you said it yourself, there needs to be change."
"That, I agree with."
"Goodbye McHorn."
"Goodbye, Master." Pawson smiled to himself.
"That does have a nice ring to it." 'But officer sounds better.' Pawson left and returned to the adjacent room.
Bogo stood by the door. "What did you get?" Pawson considered his options.
"I'll be honest, there wasn't much of interest to you, sir. I'll send the important parts."
"Delgato, don't you have anything more important to do?"
"Err, yes sir." Delgato then left in a hurry.
"I know it was you that saved all of them. Why are taking the worst aspects of your previous partner, I want you to know that. If you are trying to cover that up, don't bother, I know."
"Sorry sir, I wanted to not be found out."
"You can thank Hopps on that slip-up."
"Do you think she will recover?"
"She's a tough bunny, she'll make it."
"I don't doubt you but those are some powerful drugs." He thought for a second. "What happened with Wolford? McHorn said he felt he was a bit harsh."
"He left, I don't know where to." He then paused for a second. "You will assist him and Fangmeyer from this point on, do not disappoint."
"I plan not to."
"Good." Pawson then left and headed to the main office.
"Hey, Jake, how are you doing?"
"Hey Clawhauser, I was just wondering, have you seen Wolford?"
"Oh, yeah, why?"
"Something to tell him?"
"Oooh, could I know what?" Ben then taken a doughnut and quickly scoffed it down.
"Yeah, you really are a cheetah, that was quick. Anyways, no, sorry but it's for his ears only."
"Oh well, he's down that way." Clawhauser pointed down one corridor. Pawson nodded and walked down that way.
"And what if he's right? What if I am good for nothing? Childish? Irresponsible?"
"You can't let his words tear you down like that. Besides, you shown that you are so much more than that."
Pawson knocked on the door and then walked in when he heard it was silent. "Hey, Wolfy, I just wanted to say- what the hell happened here?" He saw Wolford sitting on the kitchen counter-top, beside the kettle and then Fangmeyer stood next to him, rubbing his back. "Actually, I don't want to know." He shook his head then walked through the break room. He pulled out his phone and quickly scrolled through his recording, skipping to the part where they spoke about the sulking wolf in question. He refused to listen to the phone at first but then listened to it more and more.
"Why did he lie then?"
Pawson skipped to another aspect of the sound clip. "There's your answer. He spared you, he was supposed to kill you but didn't."
"Wolford stood back up and corrected his uniform. "Sorry you saw me like that." He then smiled. "Do you need anything else before we split?"
"Me no, you, maybe."
"Please, explain what you mean by that." Fangmeyer cut in before Wolford could say anything.
"I'm now working alongside you two. I have to warn you though, I may be a little controversial now."
"Why do you say that?"
Pawson then rewound the entire sound clip and played it to the duo there. Before he played it, he stated the obvious. "I'm not serious about my statements here." The two nodded and listened in.
A/N: Well, I finally got my laptop back, but I will be going soon and I may not have it for about a week or maybe a little bit longer and so I really wanted to upload this chapter before I leave.
With that being said, I think I like how I wrote this chapter. Please tell me what you think about it, I'll be interested to hear.
With all of that being said, I wanted to say I'll see you all next year and of course Merry Christmas.
