Ch. 8: Our Next Destination
(Luna's POV)
I opened my eyes to see my old training room again. It was the same room I saw during our last flashback. Like last time, as soon as I touched Cal, I saw the same thing as he did...Or at least something similar to what he had experienced back when he was a Padawan. I'm still not sure why I have this ability, but I know that I want to know more about it. I want to understand if it's really my power.
"It's time for your next lesson, Luna."
I looked up and saw my master standing a few yards away from me. She was holding a couple of objects in her hands. They look like dodgeballs from where I was standing.
"It's time to learn how to "Force-push" objects. This ability is simple, but only if you focus on your hand and the object you're pushing. What you don't want is everything to be pushed at the same time. You only want to push what needs to be pushed. These dodgeballs in my hands are going to help you achieve this ability. I'm going to throw them at you so that you'll be solely focused on the ball rather than everything else," she said, tossing the ball in her hands a couple of times.
"T-Throw them at me?" I asked her in a slight panic. She smirked at the look on my face.
"Yes."
"What if I don't Force-push it, and it hits me in the face?"
"Then you get hit in the face and try again!" she laughed. I grimaced at her and raised my hands in a defensive position. Master Secura raised her own hands and threw one of the balls at me. I needed to focus on the ball and my hand that was pushing it. Staring at the ball, I shot my hand out, but the ball smacked into my palm.
"Ow!"
"Try again!" my master instructed with an entertained countenance. I frowned and flicked my wrist to wave off the pain of the ball hitting my hand. She threw the ball, and I tried to focus again. It was difficult because the ball was flying right at you, so there's that lingering fear that it would hit you. I shook that fear away and shot my hand out again. This time, the ball was stopped in its tracks and fell to the floor. It wasn't necessarily a push, but it was a start.
"That's good! Now do it again and again until you're able to push the ball back to me!"
Over the next few minutes, she threw several dodgeballs at me, and I was able to push them back more and more. Sure enough, after the twentieth or so ball, I Force-pushed the ball as hard as I could, and it flew back into my master's hand.
"Excellent job, Luna! You can now Force-push objects!" she cheered before I suddenly found myself back in the Zeffo tomb. I was standing close to Cal, and my hand was snug around his arm. I looked from my hand to his face, and he was slowly opening his eyes. The familiar green eyes I was used to seeing revealed themselves to me, and he slowly smiled.
"You good? Did you have the same flashback as I did?"
"Yes and yes. I went back to my Force-pushing lesson with Master Secura," I said to him.
"Yeah, I did the same with my master too. 'What stands in the way becomes the way,' he used to say."
He turned to look at the crack in the wall and brought his hand out towards it. Flexing his fingers, he Forced the wall in, and the rocks that made it up fell to the ground. We had a whole new path to explore.
"How could I forget such a cool technique?" I asked myself in disgust. Cal put his hand on my arm and shrugged his shoulders.
"Don't worry about it; I forgot it too. We spent five years not using the Force at all. It'll take some time for us to remember everything. In the meantime, we still have more tomb to explore."
"Let's do it," I said back excitedly. We walked through what used to be just a crack in the wall into an open room. There were designs on the wall that had ancient Zeffo scripture written on them. Cordova's image appeared before us from one of BD-1's projection lenses when we walked up to the wall.
"It's fascinating. Simply fascinating."
Cordova pointed to a design on the wall that looked like a tree, and we walked over to him.
"...Look at this branched pattern. There's no doubt that it is a wroshyr tree from Kashyyyk. It may be time to visit an old friend. Chieftain Tarfful would know if the Zeffo had anything to do with the planet..."
His image disappeared, and the projection light no longer shined from BD-1's eye. Cal gave me a look, and I laid my hand on the wall, feeling the different striations of the wroshyr tree.
"Back during the Clone Wars, Kashyyyk was a major battlefield throughout the entire thing. I wonder if they're still fighting or if the Empire has taken the planet over," I said, fearful of the latter.
"Either way, it's gonna be tough getting there and finding Tarfful...But we'll do it," he muttered with a slight smirk forming. My lips turned upward too, and I nodded.
"Yeah, we will."
I saw another crack in the wall ahead, and this was my time to show Cal that I could Force-push too. I concentrated my energy in my hand and pushed that energy outward towards the wall. It blew away like a bomb had exploded, and I saw Cal blinking repeatedly.
"W-Wow, I think that Force-push was better than mine."
"Naturally," I said with the most annoying tone I could think of. He narrowed his eyes at me, and I giggled.
"No, no, I'm kidding!"
He smiled and held in a laugh as we walked into the next room. At first glance, you could tell that the room was going to be a puzzle. Multiple sections of the room had ramps built into them. The ramps were probably three feet across. Each ramp ended in a circular pit that was identical to what we had seen in the tomb so far.
"Another puzzle...You know I was never good at school when I was a kid. I was decent with my Jedi lessons but my basic math and science lessons? Yeah…no," Cal said to me with his hands on his hips. I noticed that he does that whenever he's thinking hard about something. I sort of have a habit of detecting a person's quirks. I don't do it on purpose, but it is something I find interesting.
"I was okay. I wasn't like a genius or anything, but I did well for what it was. Is there another one of those metal balls somewhere?"
We looked around, and he pointed up at the top of the room. There was a second level, and a large metal ball was just sitting up there by itself. We at least knew that we needed to get the ball in the last pit at the end of the ramps. It was getting it there that was the problem. There were different switches on the ground floor, so we flipped them on and off to see what they did. Pressing the buttons caused the ramps from the ground and the second floor to move. It was very reminiscent of switching train tracks.
"Hold on, I'll go up to the ball," I said. I walked up the ramp to the second floor and looked around. Yeah, it just consisted of the ball and the ramp that led down to the ground floor. I was about to say something, but the ramp going downstairs suddenly moved back to where it had been before we pressed it.
"Ah, okay. This is a two-person puzzle," Cal figured below.
"So it's timed? Here, I'll try to push the ball towards the ramp, and you press the switch when I do."
"Alright, let me know when you're ready," he replied. I got behind the ball and brought my hand back. I signaled to Cal that I was ready, and he pressed the switch as I pushed the ball. It flew away from me and passed down the ramp as it began to switch again. It rolled down to Cal, and he Force-pushed it into the pit. I heard a strange metallic noise come from the wall as I made my way back down to Cal. Sure enough, another one of those tomb guardians appeared from the wall, its footsteps stomping into the dirt.
"You okay?" I asked him. I didn't hear him fight the guardian yet, but I just wanted to make sure.
"Yeah, better with you here," he said through nervous breaths. I wanted to thank him for saying that, but I was too busy dodging a beam coming out of the guardian's chest. I'm willing to bet that that shit hurts if it hits you. Cal got a few good hits in, and the guardian turned to him. It raised its fist, and Cal raised his saber in a defensive stance. The guardian threw its fist at him, sending the boy to the ground with a thud.
"O-ow!" Cal grunted while on his back. Good thing he blocked most of that punch. I ran to the guardian and twirled around it with my lightsaber, slashing and cutting into its armor. It tried to stomp at me, but I managed to fall back before he could. I landed next to Cal, and he still looked a bit winded.
"This is going well," I said.
"Yeah," he laughed before helping me up. We both dashed backward to avoid another punch from the guardian and slowed it down to finish it off for good. We were both slightly sweaty once it was all said and done, and I was glad Cal didn't care about seeing me like this. Of course, I was being self-conscious about it, though.
"Beep boop beep beep."
"Well, BD, I'm sorry that we don't look like we just got back from the spa," Cal retorted, petting the top of the robot's head.
"A spa sounds pretty nice right about now," I groaned, running my hand through my hair. Cal smiled and got beside me. He extended his hands out in front of us and talked very optimistically.
"Just think about it. Once we get back to the ship, we get a hot shower and a nice meal from Greez. And then we get to take the best nap ever on the way to Kashyyyk."
I brought my hands to my chest and sighed.
"That sounds even better than the spa!"
He agreed with me, and we both decided that we would keep that sweet thought in mind as we made our way out of the tomb. The ball in the pit gave us a long and treacherous pathway back to the elevator that had no way of going back up. There was, however, a metal ball that we couldn't push back when we came down here. Pushing it in the pit beside the elevator caused the platform to rise as a way to get back to surface level. Thank the Force for that.
"Well, that was fun. I didn't know what we would find in the tomb, but I'm glad we know where we need to go next. I was afraid that we would get here and find nothing," I said.
"Yeah, that would've been bad," he said back to me. He nudged BD-1 on his shoulder and asked him what time it was. "...Damn, really? We spent three hours just in the tomb? By the time we get back to the ship, it'll be time for dinner."
I hadn't realized that we were in the tomb for that long. I did know that my stomach was starting to growl. The thought of Greez's cooking sounded more and more inviting with each passing minute. I widened my eyes thinking about him and turned to Cal.
"Hey, we should tell Cere and Greez what we found."
His green eyes widened as well, and he started connecting the comm to Cere.
"Oh right, good idea, Luna."
He started the call, and Cere answered after a few seconds.
"What did you find, guys?" she asked as soon as the call started. Cal glanced at me, and I motioned for him to tell her instead of me. He smiled and rolled his eyes.
"We found a secret message from Cordova in there. He said that the Zeffo may have gone to Kashyyyk. He mentioned someone named Tarfful. Do you know anybody by that name?"
She didn't say anything for a second in a moment of thought.
"Ah, I remember now. He's a chieftain on the planet, and the two of them used to be old friends. I'm not sure if he's still living, but we won't know until we go there. Get back to the ship as soon as you can. We'll prepare the coordinates of the planet before you get here."
"Sounds like a plan," I told her as the call ended. The rising elevator finally reached the surface level, and we were met with the long courtyard from before. The only problem was that it was littered with stormtroopers. They must have followed us or something.
"I hope they aren't able to get into the tomb…." I whispered to Cal as we crouched down out of view. He looked out into the courtyard and scanned for an exit.
"They'll have a tough time getting through it and moving the metal balls without the Force...Unless one of the Inquisitors is here with them...I think there's a way out in that corner right there."
He pointed to an area near the entrance. A pothole in front of it was blowing up air that would probably push us up to the site. We checked the map on BD-1 just in case before making a run for it. We killed a couple of stormtroopers on the way there, but we made it unscathed. The air from the pothole pushed us up to the area and immediately on another slide made of ice. Seriously, what is up with this planet and ice slides!?
The slide ended up in a dark and moist cave. Water dripped from the ceiling and onto my shoulder, which made me jump.
"You good?" Cal laughed, practically catching me from falling on him.
"Y-Yeah! Some water dripped on my shoulder and scared the crap out of me," I said, filled with embarrassment.
"Oh...Well, if it happens again, I'll have to have a strong word with it," he joked. I pushed him lightly and giggled.
"Damn, a strong word? I would watch it if I were that water droplet. Cal Kestis is going to have a strong word with you if you keep it up."
He snorted at me and looked around the cave. It was dark, but you could still see what was inside of it. On the other end of the cave was an elevator that went up and out of the cave. That was our key to getting out of here and back to the Mantis. As Cal and I walked, I noticed that this cave had a narrow path with the sides of the path leading to a never-ending trench. I looked over the side into the abyss and couldn't make out what was at the bottom. It would kill you for sure if you accidentally fell into it.
"This planet has too many cliffs and abysses."
"Yeah, I'm surprised we haven't fallen to our deaths by now," Cal muttered. We walked about halfway to the elevator when we heard a rumbling noise from the wall left of us. We both looked at it and then at each other. We had the same thought in each other's eyes and backed away from the wall. At this point, we knew anything could come barreling out of the wall at us.
Roaaaaaaar!
My eyes went big at the sound of that. A few seconds passed, and the wall exploded. Rocks flew in every direction, and I was grateful that we thought to get away from it. What came from the dust of the destroyed wall was a monster the size of a small car. Cal and I ignited our lightsabers and readied for the beast to attack us. Sure enough, it ran at us at full speed. I dived to the left, and Cal dived to the right before it could hit us. I turned to face the monster, but nothing was there. All I heard was the distancing screech from the awful creature. It had fallen off the cliff.
"That was easy…." I said, not believing what just happened. Cal shook his head and nodded towards the elevator.
"Let's get to the elevator before something else tries to attack us."
"You don't have to tell me twice!" I jogged to the elevator, and Cal followed me soon after. We pressed the switch to make the elevator go up, and we were now getting closer and closer to the ship. We rechecked the map, and the elevator was taking us back to the path that was near the airport platform. Reaching the top, the door opened, and I could see the Mantis sitting in the same place as when we landed. This was the door that was locked when we first got here.
"There it is," I said. Cal smiled and stepped out of the elevator.
"I knew we would get back somehow."
"Mhmm...sure."
We walked along the path to the ship and passed the dead, mutilated stormtrooper. I scrunched my nose up in disgust and looked away. The body was starting to stink, and I put my face in my arm to mask the smell. Cal, BD-1, and I walked to the edge of the path before it went down to the landing platform and could see the entire area from here. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed something moving from the hangar and looked to see an AT-ST stomping its way near the ship.
"What in the…."
The vehicle took out its blasters and began shooting at the ship. The ship's shield went up after a few shots, and a comm call came ringing from our telecom.
"Cal! Luna! They're attacking us near the hangar! We have the shield up, but it won't last long if you guys don't get here fast enough!" Cere yelled frantically. We could also hear Greez cursing in the background about his ship being damaged. I swear he cares more about the craft than his own life!
"Don't worry, Cere! We're here!" I yelled back to her. I jumped down to the platform, and Cal landed next to me. The AT-ST seemed to hear us, and its guns turned in our direction. The blaster shots were similar to those from a stormtrooper's regular blaster. That made it easier to block and reflect the shots to the machine with our lightsabers. However, it had other weapons as well. Cal and I found this out when it shot out little balls with nets attached to them. The balls hit the ground and became stuck to the platform. It was almost like a network of satellites connecting to each other. We tried to run from the balls, but they were so widespread and associated that we couldn't escape the electricity that spread through them a couple of seconds after. I gasped as electricity raced through my body and trapped me in place. I wanted to scream out in pain, but I couldn't get anything out. The feeling lasted for five seconds but felt way longer than that. I exhaled strongly once I came to my senses, and I saw that Cal did the same. The AT-ST tried to shoot at us while we were dazed, but we had the energy left to block the shots.
"You okay, Luna!?" Cal yelled to me, his hand holding his chest.
"Yes, I think so! Are you!?"
"Yeah, I'm good! I don't want to go through that again, though!"
"Me neither! But now we know, I guess," I said, looking for the positive. I found myself still shaking from the electricity and tightened my fist to make it stop. Cal became more courageous and ran to the AT-ST, slashing at it a few times and then rolling out of the way. I was about to do the same, but the vehicle shot more balls from its guns, only this time they were bombs.
"This thing sucks," I said under my breath as I dived out of the way. I was exhausted from all the fighting we had done today and could feel the aches and pains in my bones and muscles. Hopefully, we can destroy this thing quickly. Cal got some more hits in but was knocked back when the AT-ST kicked at him. It then turned to me and decided to use a new attack. I sighed and watched it to see what that new attack was. A large missile ejected from one of the slots on its side and headed straight at me. I had the idea of using the Force-push to send it back at the AT-ST, which worked like a charm. The missile exploded right in the center of the machine, and it fell to the ground.
"Holy crap, that was awesome!" Cal yelled from the other side of the platform. He ran to me and raised his hand. I grinned and gave him a high five.
"Thanks! The idea just popped in my head, and I was like, 'well, if it doesn't work, I'm screwed,'" I told him with a laugh. He laughed at the ground and looked back at the AT-ST, which was now emitting smoke from its cockpit. I stared at him because he looked like he was concentrating on something. I reached my hand out to him, and he suddenly raised his lightsaber up and reflected away a blaster shot before it could hit me. I looked out in front of me and saw a guy on the ground, a hole in his chest from his own blaster shot.
"Wow, thanks, Cal…." I told him after realizing what had just happened. I didn't even know those things were piloted. I thought they were just automated.
"No problem. On Bracca, we had to dismantle the old versions of those things a lot, and they always had a pilot with them. But anyway, I guess that's our last big surprise from Zeffo. Was it as good for you as it was for me?" he asked. I chuckled and crossed my arms over my chest.
"It was definitely an adventure. I had a lot of fun, but right now, I just want to rest."
"I hear that," he said with a big smile. He started walking to the Mantis, but I stopped him.
"Wait, before we go back, I just wanted to say thanks for being with me today. You had my back for every fight we had to go through, and you made the day way more fun than if I had gone through it alone. So, thank you for being so cool to be with," I said with reddened cheeks. He blushed as he smiled.
"Luna, you're probably the nicest person I've ever met, to be honest. You make it easy to talk and joke around with you, which is why we became friends in such a short amount of time. You had my back too, so I should be thanking you!"
"We can thank each other," I laughed.
"Deal," he laughed back as I hugged him. He hugged me back and looked to his shoulder at BD-1. "...and thank you BD-1 for helping us too!"
"Yes, your mapping skills are amazing!" I told the robot, patting his head affectionately. He gave us a happy trill and did a little dance on Cal's shoulder. We both chuckled and made our way to the Mantis.
The door hatch dropped for us, and we climbed aboard. Heading to the cockpit, Greez turned in his seat.
"You two got some moves! Nice work out there protecting my baby!" he said, giving us each a small pat on the arm with the back of his hand. "...tell me this wasn't a wasted trip."
Cal sat in one of the cockpit chairs, and I leaned on the back of Greez's.
"We found the tomb of the Zeffo, and they definitely used the Force."
Cere raised her eyebrows in interest.
"An advanced civilization of Force wielders who mysteriously vanished. No wonder Cordova was so interested in them. What else did you find?" she asked, yearning to know more. Cal looked at me, and I continued from where he left off.
"In the tomb, we found a message from Cordova about the Zeffo traveling to Kashyyyk. He said there's a chieftain there named Tarfful that might know more about it."
Greez let out a groan at the mention of Kashyyyk. It was the same reaction I had when I first heard Cordova's message.
"Ehhh, Kashyyyk is not a good place right now. Things are really bad down there. The Empire is there giving everything they got against those Wookies."
So Kashyyyk is still a battlefield? You got to give it to the Wookies for not giving up. Cal shrugged his shoulders and patted Greez's shoulder the same way he had with us.
"Then we better get ready for a fight," he said, getting out of the cockpit chair and walking to the kitchen. Cere followed him there, leaving Greez and me alone in the cockpit. The man was grumbling under his breath as he clicked some buttons to start up the ship.
"That kid is something else," he told me.
"He's just getting more confident, is all. I think it's a good thing for him and me. We've spent so long being afraid to do anything, but now it feels like we're making a difference. We made some progress today, and it just feels really good, you know?" I replied. Greez looked at me and then nodded.
"Yeah, kid. I understand what you mean. I'm glad you two are feeling freer. I just hate all the conflict. Never really been a fan of all the drama."
"I can tell," I laughed, "I'm sorry you got caught in all this...but Cal and I will do our best to keep you and Cere safe. You saved me, so I want to return the favor. You guys are kind of like my family now...Is that okay to say?" I asked, slightly afraid he would be uncomfortable with me saying that. To my relief, he nodded his head.
"Of course it is, kid. I don't know how long I'll be with the group, but I'll try to make life less hard for you and Cal while I'm here. Both of you need a mentor, and who else is a better choice than me?" he said with a cocky smile on his face. I couldn't help but grin because it was such a Greez thing to say.
"Nobody."
"Damn right! Now go on and wash up; I'm making smoked kaadu ribs for dinner!"
"Sounds good!" I said, standing straight up. I watched as the ship rose from the platform and headed for Space. The departure from Zeffo went more smoothly than when we had gotten here this morning. Now all I saw was the millions of stars that spread throughout the galaxy. Before leaving the cockpit to take a shower, I had one more question for Greez.
"How long a trip is Kashyyyk from here?" I asked. Greez thought for a second before answering.
"I'd say a day or so. That gives you time to rest tomorrow."
"Okay, cool!" I said before leaving his chair. I walked into the living room, and it looked as if Cal and Cere were having a deep conversation. Cere had just finished what she was saying, and she stood up from the sofa.
"Everything okay?" I asked her in concern.
"Yes, I just brought up some bad memories, is all. I'll tell you about it later, Luna. Until then, take a break. You and Cal did good today," she said before going back to the cockpit. I thanked her and looked at Cal.
"You alright?"
"Yeah, she just told me some sad stuff from her past. I'll let her to talk to you about it since it's personal. What did you and Greez talk about?" he asked, standing up from the couch as well. I put my arms behind me and walked up the steps to the kitchen.
"What he would be making for dinner. I'm gonna go take a shower real quick."
"Yeah, I probably should too," he chuckled, following me.
I went into my room, and he went into his. Once I closed the door, I went straight for the bathroom and turned the water on. As I was waiting for it to turn hot, I thought about today. It was everything I could've hoped for. I could've done without getting hurt, but that's why healing stims exist, I guess.
Next stop is Kashyyyk, and I can't wait.
And that is the end of the chapter! Sorry for taking so long; I had an important project to work on for school and work. It's finished now, so all I have to worry about is work for a few months. I hope you guys liked this chapter! The next chapter will be a chill chapter and then the start of Kashyyyk. Please review or comment and let me know what you think of the story so far! Thanks for reading, and I'll see you guys next time!
