The Scene

In your library in Wei, you finished your favorite book for what seems like the hundredth time. A book your mother gifted to you when you finished her training and became a master of the Sword. A book you read after you finished your first job as a mercenary and settling in that village near Hu Lao Gate. The book you read before your first battle and stalemate with Lu Bu.

The Art of War by Sun Tzu.

This copy has seen better days; tears and tatters at the edges while the title has waned on the front cover. The text on the back has started to fade. Despite it all, you have continued to read this novel front to back like it was a fresh copy. You know this book word for word and the messages and strategies you've modified so that they can apply to one person. Then, you started reading to change them for two and three people since your lover Diaochan entered your daily life. And your new partner, Yueying, became a widow after Zhuge Liang was killed following Jin's attack.

Diaochan was fast asleep after another day of jobs given to you all by Wei's citizens and officers. Sleep sounds enticing right now since you get to spend another night cycle holding the most beautiful woman in China. Ever since you helped her overcome her guilt over almost getting you killed and slaying Lu Bu, she's become more radiant and lovely to be around. She's capable and dependable when on the job and a much better person overall.

"My Lord? You are still up?"

Speak it into existence.

You glance to the door, and there she was in all of her inhumane beauty.

"It's nearly midnight milord. You should turn in before it gets too late," Diaochan says as she walks up to you, seeing the book you just finished with intrigue. "The Art of War? I didn't know you had this in your possession."

"Yes. Mother gave this to me as a parting gift when she finished teaching me the way of the sword. This is the same copy she gave me since I left the Silk Road. I take it with me everywhere and read it in its entirely after my first job in each territory. I also read it after my first meeting with you and Lu Bu. I don't think there's anything I know as well as this novel," you explain as she listens intently.

"Wenji told me of how much you adore this book. But I thought she was just saying things to get to me. I didn't realize she was telling the truth," Diao responded as she sat on your lap, softly clutching the book. "It's most certainly showing its age."

"It'll most likely be destroyed in a few more years. Thankfully I know every word in this novel from front to back. The novel holds so much sentimental value to me, Diao. Reading this book was the first step in becoming who I am today."

"I can certainly see that. I've yet to meet a warrior as knowledgeable and ferocious on the battlefield as you, milord. But only I get to see the man, the myth, and the legend you are off of it. And it's something I thank the Gods for every night." Diao kisses your cheek ever so softly.

"I'm only a fraction of the woman you are, Diao. I thank you for staying with me," you say shyly as you rub your lover's knuckles.

She blushed at your show of loyalty. "My Lord, I'm not deserving of such praise. Yet, I thank you deeply for the praise. All I did was make a solemn vow to the man I loved and the man I love now, and I'm hellbent on making sure it remains valid. I'll stay with you until death parts us both and be there for you when we complete our next job until you're on your death bed." She clutches your prized possession. "I will be with you in your dark hour when your first treasure can no longer handle the burden you have given. All because I must. I was given this task because only I can complete it."

Diao's determination was on display as she places the book on your chest. The fireplace lighting adds a gorgeous shade of orange over her complexion, a rarity for you to see her beauty evolve in front of you.

"I love you, Diao." You tell your most steadfast and loyal lover.

She smiles lovingly, kissing you on the lips with passion and fervor rivaled by the embrace you two shared in Wu.

"I love you too, Lord Yuan." She responded when you two separated. "May I dance with you?"

That left you in confusion as you both stand. "Of course, Diao, but there's no music. What shall we dance to?"

Diao wrapped her toned arms around your neck as you did the same to her waist. "Wenji. When she realized I have a nice singing voice, she made a song for us. If you would allow me, I may sing it to you while we dance together."

What a surprise. "I didn't know you could sing, Diao."

"If I can impress the most powerful warrior in China, then I will continue to do so, milord. May I?"

She closed the distance between your face and hers, her green eyes locking with yours.

"You may, Diao. Just not so loud as Yue is still asleep," you remind her.

She pecks your lips with a smile. "Of course, milord."

You two start maneuvering around the library, syncing movements flawlessly without effort. While you two found a consistent rhythm, Diaochan began to serenade you. (Start playing here.)

I know it by heart

But I still like to read it from the start

Offering the remedy

Sweeter than he used to be

Spend the love we saved soon

Win the waiting game soon

She sang flawlessly as you continued dancing around the room, the bookshelves, and the chairs and tables being nothing more than props in the heat of the moment. When you two finally finished, you stopped in the same spot where you began, Diao staring at you. Her hungry gaze had a more lustful subtone behind it, one you were all too familiar with.

And one you couldn't say no to.
