The Scene
Benji's POV:
*RING* *RING*
Who could be calling this early in the morning? Groggily, I get out of bed and pick up the phone. "It's two in the morning. This matter couldn't wait?"
"Sorry, Ben. Believe me, I'm not thrilled to be up this early." Koga's voice spoke on the other line.
"Koga?" My attention was alert now. "Is there something wrong?"
"Not necessarily. I need you for something, as I don't have the skillset needed for this. It involves matters of the soul."
"The soul?" I repeat while getting out of bed.
"Yes. I can explain in more detail, but only if you agree to help."
"Of course, as long as you're in the dog house with Chizuru. I'll be where you are in a few minutes."
"Thanks, Ben. Get here as soon as you can," Koga said as the phone hung up.
I got dressed before opening a portal with Koga's location as a link and walked through. Arriving at the other side, I look around. I'm in a cave with a few other people I'm sharing the space with. Two faces I recognized immediately - Koga and Wes. There were three faces I didn't. An elderly man, a young man who looked to be in his late teens, and an unconscious woman who was rather lovely to look at.
"Thanks for gettin' here on short notice, Ben," Koga said as we shook hands per our custom.
"Of course, Koga. Wes, good to see you. How's Ursula?"
"Likewise, Benjamin. Ursula is fine, thanks for asking."
"Ben, this is Bruce Wayne and Terry McGinnis."
"And she is?"
"This is the body of Talia Al Ghul."
"Why specify the body?" I ask Koga.
"Bruce, you tell him."
"We just returned from her family estate after she offered to restore my youth. But we eventually figured out that her father Ra's Al Ghul transferred his consciousness into her body and wanted mine instead. We thwarted his plans and destroyed the Lazarus Pit that he planned on using to transfer our consciousness. Detective Koga put him in an extended slumber so he could use his mask to see if the process can be reversed."
"What did the mask show you, Koga?"
"The Mask of Truth showed Talia and her father in constant flux. As of now, the two are still battling for control of Talia's body. Admittedly, I don't know about the soul or the body to know if we can help Talia regain control. Hence why I called you and Wes."
"I wanted to kill her after Mr. Wayne revealed everything she and her father did to him over the decades. But I was not so politely convinced to not do so."
"Y'know, Bruce. I was hoping that growing older and gaining a successor would make you more open to the idea that saving everyone is impossible. Yet here we are," Koga voiced his opinion.
"Quiet, Koga. You're only bitter because we called you at three in the morning."
"Bruce, I've known you for decades. I'm past you calling me at ungodly hours so that I can help you or Commissioner Gordon. I'm not past you thinking that every criminal in Gotham or in an adjacent city deserves time when we all know that won't do anything when they get out or escape."
"I agree with Bruce, Koga. There is always another way."
"Didn't stop you with Goro."
"Or Kia."
"Those were acts of passion. I thought my sister was dead, and Kia was paramount in my ex-wife's torture." (AD: Hmm, interesting here)
"A kill's a kill, Benjamin. You're telling us that if you had the opportunity to kill Onaga or Shao Kahn with no repercussions, you'd throw them both in jail?" Wes argued. "No, they die because that's the only way. Talia is nowhere near as bad as them, Nergal, Zephiel, Ganondorf, or Demise. But she still had betrayed Mr. Wayne in the past when she had control of her body. What's to stop her from doing it again if we save her?"
"That's none of your concern, Wesley," Bruce sharply answered.
"If we can save her life, Ben, we have a moral obligation." Terry finally broke his silence.
"We can discuss philosophies of whether or not killing for the greater good is justified later. Ben, can you save Talia from her father's obsessive antics, or will we have to destroy the body?" Koga asked me matter-of-factly.
I nod twice. "We can, though I'll need some assistance. I assume that's why you brought Wes here?"
"Yes. I might be the most powerful person you know in the matter of Magic."
"I won't argue with you there. Hell, if you know the incantations, you could probably do this alone. Luckily, you don't have to learn it. We're going to purify her soul, which only requires one of us to know the appropriate spell. All you have to do is mirror my movements on my cue."
"Simple enough, I suppose. Let me know when you're ready."
"Thank you, Wes. Luckily, I have a soul on hand, so we can do this now. Follow me."
I start chanting the spell incantation and performing the movements. Wesley carefully mirrored my motions as we lifted Talia and Ra's souls out of her body.
Blue and green snakes were viciously battling one another, but the green snake was winning from the look of things.
"I assume the green snake is Ra's?" I ask Bruce.
"Koga?"
Koga put the Mask of Truth on. "Correct."
"All I need to know."
I poured my spare soul out as it slithered and aided the blue snake of Talia's soul as it killed the green snake. As the snake dissipated, we heard a loud shriveled shriek echo throughout the cave.
"Ra's Al Ghul is dead. That was his soul that yelled like that," Koga validated as he took his mask off.
"With that out of the way, on my cue."
"Got it."
We motioned Talia's soul back into her body. She now had complete control once again, her discomfort reverting to calm.
"That should be it. My thanks, Wes."
"No problem."
"Will that be all, Bruce?"
"Yes. Thank you all. I know it must've been hard to come here on short notice."
"It's whatever. Just make sure this doesn't bite us all in the ass," Koga spoke bluntly. "You want me to take you back to Latasi, Wes?"
"That would be wonderful, Koga. I'll see you later, Benjamin."
"'Till next time, Ben," Koga said as he and Wes teleported out of the cave.
"Thanks again for helping us, Benjamin. And for defending my wanting to save Talia."
"No problem, Bruce. I've had similar debates with Koga before. While he does have a point, saving a life can do more good than ending one in the long run."
"Exactly. Still, Koga has quite the list of connections. We should exchange contact information."
"Sure. What should we do with Ms. Al Ghul?"
"Let her rest. As should you since it's roughly two-thirty in China right now."
"Thanks, Bruce. We'll talk later."
I opened a portal that brought me back to the Trainer's Estate. I land back in my bed and instantly fall asleep.
Next Morning:
When I woke up, the sun was in the middle of its rising motion. I rose out of bed and dressed before heading for the Room of Silence. On the way, I hear a knocking on the door.
"Coming."
I wondered who in Argus' name would come to my home so early in the morning. Opening the door brought a surprising sight.
Talia Al Ghul, with a bouquet of flowers in hand. Her smile was warm and welcoming as the sunlight helped accentuate her natural beauty.
"Oh, my. I didn't think my savior would be quite handsome. May I come in?"
"O-Of course," I say, clearing the way so she may come inside. "Talia, was it?"
She placed the bouquet on the nearest table before turning to me.
I extend my hand. "Benjamin Maddox."
She softly took my hand and shook it. "Talia Al Ghul. Though you might know that by now. Bruce told me of you and your friends' actions that saved me last night. I wish to extend my personal thanks."
"It was nothing, Talia. Though I was called in on short notice, I did what I could. As did Wes and Koga."
"Detective Koga? He's still alive after all these decades?"
"Yes, considering he's a Tribal whose natural life span can reach quadruple digits. He's very keen on living a full life as opposed to his previous incarnations. But what about you, Talia? Any side effects from the soul purification? Bouts of anger, emotional instability?"
Talia placed a hand on my chest and closed the distance between us, our lips inches apart. "How sweet of you. But I have not noticed such effects. Should I expect something like that soon?"
She didn't try to hide her eyes scanning my lips.
I softly place my hand over hers and take it off my chest. "No, if they didn't happen the moment you woke, they won't. You should be in the free and clear."
"That's good," Talia answered as she scanned the vastness of the Trainer's Estate. "This is a lovely home you have, Benjamin. Surely you must have others living here with you?"
"What makes you say that?"
"The way you took my hand off of you must indicate that you are spoken for. Am I wrong?"
"You... were wrong. I was married up until a few months ago. Twenty-seven years of marriage thrown to the wayside because of paranoia."
"You were married for twenty-seven years? How old are you, Benjamin?" Talia asked, her flirtatious tone returning.
"How old do you think I am?"
"Very old if that's your answer."
"Fair enough. I am a father of four. And thankfully, I was given co-custody of them all," I answer with a smile that reciprocated her laughter. "But in all seriousness, Talia. Are you sure you're okay? I won't say I know of what you went through. But I know enough that something like that would damage anyone deeply regardless of their mental strength."
Talia rested against the wall and took a deep breath. "I... I still can't believe my father did that to me. I was always torn on his actions, but to take my body from me. That's just... That's just..."
She couldn't finish before sliding to the floor in a breakdown. I grab some tissues and sit down next to her, giving her one. She accepted the tissue and wiped her eyes.
"How could he do this? For years, I devoted myself to his cause. I am glad that you and Wesley killed him. But I could never imagine he would do this to me."
"I can't even imagine. My father died for me, my sister, and my mother."
Talia gazed at me. Even in this state, she looked gorgeous.
"I envy you, Benjamin." I helped her up. "What of you? You said you were married... but you are divorced?"
"Sadly. My ex-wife Jade grew paranoid that I was being unfaithful, so she hired Koga's partner, Ana, to snoop on me. In response, she told Koga, who told me. I hired him to snoop on her in response. Ana found nothing. Meanwhile, Koga found that Jade was unfaithful to me and our other wife, Sareena. She convinced Sareena to leave me in tandem. Thankfully, because of Koga's little sister, I gained co-custody of our children. I felt betrayal on a level, hence why I'm alone here."
I opened a bottle of wine and poured two glasses for us. I handed Talia one, and she smiled before accepting it.
"How do you know me so well when we just met?" She took a sip. "People don't know their boons until they no longer have them. How do we get over this, Benjamin?"
I took a sip of my wine while thinking of an answer. "Just continue living. Find something or someone to share what time we have left with. I guess it's different for us since we spent much of our lives pleasing others that we never stopped to think about what we want. The forced severance has allowed us to see things differently."
"How insightful," Talia said as we both finished our glasses. "Well, I know what I wish to do next."
I walked next to her as she gazed into my eyes. Her palm found itself atop of mine, and she slowly closed the distance between us again.
"Aren't you going to stop me again, Benjamin?" Talia's hot breath tickled my lips.
"No, because we both want the same thing. But can I trust you, Talia? I don't want to be stabbed in the back again."
"Not to worry, beloved. I am yours from now until the end of days."
She spoke our union into existence as we shared a soft but necessary kiss. Her weight pushes me against the table we were leaning on. When we separated, I saw Talia releasing a few tears.
"We need one another, Benjamin. We may not have known each other long, but I feel this was meant to be. For the longest time, I wished to be with Bruce. He never truly reciprocated those feelings. I just-"
"Need someone to be with you." I finished her thought.
I wiped the tears away and tucked her hair to see her entire face.
"Stay with me, Benjamin. Please..." Talia pleaded.
I caress her face as she covers my hand with hers. We share another kiss, the act serving as a pseudo yes.
