Chapter Six
New Moon 20-25
Volterra
Mentions that they only have five minutes left:
Esme gasped, bit her lip, and buried her head in Carlisle's chest. She really couldn't stand the thought of losing Edward - especially like this.
Edward, for his part, frowned, which he had been doing a lot lately … but this frown was different. This frown didn't seem to have anything to do with Bella, judging by the fact that he was closely watching Esme's loud reaction to his attempted suicide and his father's silent, but just as painful, reaction.
"Do you see how much pain you would put us all through, Edward?" Alice thought without the edge in her voice that was normally there when she was thinking about this. This time was different. She wasn't threatening him, she wasn't angry at him, she was just showing him how much it would hurt her and everyone else if he did this. "You can't ever do this …."
Edward then looked at Alice, his eyes sad and understanding, and she knew that he could finally see just how much this truly would affect all of them.
Bella's thoughts on Alice knowing that she fails so she could go home to Jasper:
There was a mixed reaction to that. Everyone would want Alice to get out if she could, but at the same time, they didn't want her to just leave Bella there.
'I don't think I would just leave,' Alice thought at Edward, knowing she couldn't say that out loud without hurting Jasper, but needed Edward to know.
Bella thinks that she would never want anything but Edward no matter how long I lived:
"And that should settle any doubts you would have about her in the future," Alice smiled.
Mentions that Edward wasn't listening, but he smiled very slightly:
"Maybe I'm a little delusional too," Edward said, probably thinking that he could hear her just fine, but he didn't believe it was actually her.
Mentions Bella slams into Edward:
"Yes!" everyone cheered. She got there in time!
When Edward mentions that Carlisle was right:
Edward looked shocked at that and Carlisle beamed.
"There's hope for you yet," Carlisle smiled. "Though, I would have preferred it if you could think of this when you're not in so much danger."
Edward reacts to Bella being in his arms and thinking that his death was quick and the says 'death, that hath …:
"Honestly, Edward," Rosalie groaned impatiently.
"No babe, he's right. It's time for poetry … not saving himself," Emmett laughed.
After Bella tells Edward they are both still alive and he ask her what was that, politely:
"I think you're quite right," Emmett laughed. "You are delusional."
Mentions that two dark shapes detach themselves from the gloom:
"So, some of the guard are there," Edward frowned. It looked like this outcome was what he had been dreading since the moment Bella stepped onto the plane.
As Edward, Bella and Alice are walking to the Volturi and he's asking what happened and was polite because Jane, Demetri and Felix were walking with them:
"Yes, Alice and Edward do have a way to talk without raising any suspicion," Jasper said. "I hardly ever catch it myself."
"Comes with years of practice," Alice said.
"As if you have the hard part," Edward rolled his eyes. "You get to think all you want… I'm the one that has to make it seem natural."
Alice just shrugged and smirked at him.
O
Verdict
Mentions that Edward never took his eyes off of Jane:
"There's nothing you could do if she decided to attack," Jasper said. "Her power isn't like a bullet you can step in front of – when she makes the decision to hurt someone, they're hurt."
"Maybe, but if I go after her she will be forced to attack me first," Edward said stubbornly.
Mentions that there was a woman that was tall, dark skin and green eyes:
"A human," Emmett said. "A human works with the Volturi?"
"Yes, there were a few that worked there when I visited them," Carlisle frowned. "It's an interesting relationship."
Bella thinks about not comprehending how this woman could be at ease surrounded by vampires:
"She's one to talk," Emmett laughed.
"She's only comfortable with 'vegetarian' vampires. She's just as afraid of the other kind as anyone else," Edward reminded him.
After Alec comes and notes that Edward is in a better mood and Edward says marginally:
"Oh, I think it's much more than marginally," Emmett laughed. "Bella's alive – you've got to be ecstatic."
"But I'm not sure how this is going to end," Edward sighed. "If we get out, however …" he added, smiling at just the thought of that.
Alice tells Edward to be patient:
"It's a good thing Shortie's there, ah Eddy?" Emmett smirked.
"Well, he needs someone to keep him from doing anything rash," Alice said trying to sound casual but she couldn't stop herself from shuddering at that thought.
Bella feels an urge to touch Aro's cheek and see if it was softer than Edward's or if was powdery like chalk:
"Do it!" Emmett chuckled.
"Emmett!" Edward growled.
When Alice says she's far from infallible and she balled her hands into fist:
"Yeah, well I'm a lot better at controlling my anger than this idiot," Alice smirked toward Edward.
Alice mentions she causes problems as often as she cures them:
"That's not true," Jasper frowned. "Though that might be true in this case …."
"Might?!" Edward snapped.
"You said it yourself – if it works out here, then you'll be happy," Jasper reminded him. "And stop acting like a fool and stay with Bella." He smiled and turned to Alice. "Other than this incident, your visions have always been an advantage to us," he concluded.
Alice glances at Edward and Aro didn't miss it:
"That's sloppy of you," Jasper shook his head.
"He knows how we react to things," Edward shrugged.
"And what's Bella's excuse," Jasper smirked.
"She's Bella, we already know that she notices too much," Edward shrugged again.
Mentions Alice raising an eyebrow and Edward inclining his head and Aro not missing that either:
"And neither did Bella," Jasper smirked.
"It looks like we might have to work on that when Bella gets here," Alice said. "Don't want her noticing all our conversations."
The description of Marcus as being utterly bored, and he seen many of Aro's enthusiasm:
"That is true - nothing really interests Marcus anymore," Carlisle said.
"But why is he like that?" Esme asked.
Carlisle frowned and then said, "It's only a rumor I heard about from an Egyptian friend of mine called Amun. It was some time after leaving the Volturi, but before Chicago," Carlisle said frowning. He looked like he wasn't sure whether to believe the story or not. "After the Volturi had been formed, Aro changed his sister, Didyme, hoping that she would have a gift as powerful as his. And she did have a unique power; everyone around her was happy all the time. Of course, this caused a lot of men to fall for her, but it was Marcus that gained her affections. The two of them were of course very happy together, in fact so happy that they lost interest in Aro's quest for power. Aro couldn't have that, and as Marcus' gift was more important to him than Didyme's, he had her own sister killed. Of course, Marcus never discovered who was to blame, and as he has lost the reason of his existence, he is now merely Aro's tool."
"That's horrible," Esme gasped.
"I know," Carlisle sighed. "But it's just a rumor …."
When Aro explains that Marcus sees relations and he's surprised by the intensity for theirs:
"Do you think that he saw the bond between Bella and myself or my bond with Alice?" Edward asked.
"It could mean both," Carlisle said, looking thoughtful and excited just like he always did when something new was being discussed. "You undoubtedly have a strong bond with Bella – which is highly unusual seeing as she's still human, but the bond that we have in this family … it's like nothing they've ever seen before …."
Aro mentions la tua cantante and what a waste:
"Waste?!" Edward hissed.
"So, it is la tua cantante," Carlisle smiled, realizing he had been right.
Aro mention that Edward reminded him of Carlisle but not so angry:
Everyone laughed at that and Carlisle beamed at Edward.
Aro talks about Edward's restraint and in his resistance to Bella's blood:
"It must really have been strong then," Carlisle said.
"I don't think he's the one to ask when you're talking about restraint," Edward said.
Aro wants to use his gift on Bella:
"He wants to see if Bella's silence will keep her mind from him too," Carlisle said. "I never thought of that, but it might work that way."
"What do you think, Jazz?" Emmett smirked.
"I think it will work," Jasper said. "His power just sounds so all-encompassing. Besides, we know that Alice and my powers work on her. "
"Good…I thought Bella would stump him," Emmett said. "A thousand dollars?"
"Sure," Jasper agreed.
"I can't wait to see his reaction when he can't read her," Emmett smirked in anticipation.
"Still, it might be nice for Edward if he could," Alice said. "That way he could finally see into Bella's mind."
"But that wouldn't be as funny," Emmett pouted.
Bella thinks that she was horrified at allowing him to touch her, but she wanted to know what his strange skin felt like:
"Ha … she does get to touch him," Emmett laughed.
"At least it's not poking him in the face," Edward grumbled.
Aro's face changes as he tries to use his gift on her from confident to doubt and the incredulity and final friendly mask:
"Yes!" Emmett cheered, laughing.
"Wow, that's amazing!" Carlisle said, looking just as excited about this as his son was. "I can't believe it … I never thought I would hear of this happening!"
"It is rather impressive," Jasper admitted as he handed Emmett the money. "I wonder why our powers work on her and theirs don't?"
"Hmmm," Carlisle said thoughtfully, still very excited. "Their powers are really similar – perhaps her thoughts are just silent. I mean, her inner thoughts might not be loud enough to be heard."
Mentions that Edward seemed a little smug that Aro couldn't read Bella:
"Yes, Eddy would be highly amused that she stumped him too," Emmett said.
"Don't forget proud," Edward smiled smugly.
"You would have liked to have heard her thoughts," Alice said.
"Yes … but I really don't want him to know them," Edward said.
Aro muses if Bella is immune to other gifts and mentions Jane:
"NO!" Edward growled and everyone else looked worried too.
"It will be okay," Esme said. "She'll be okay."
"She can do this too," Emmett stated, but this time there was no joking in his voice.
Jasper looked worried, like he wasn't sure if this would work – Jane's gift was very different than Edward's and Aro's, after all, but there would be no betting about something this potentially dangerous and painful.
Alice tries to restrain Edward:
"That better mean that she can resist this too!" Edward snapped at her.
"I don't know," Alice sighed. "It could also mean that it's pointless to resist this … that it will happen no matter what you do."
Alice warns Edward but he launched himself at Jane:
Edward's eyes flickered to Alice, and she frowned, shaking her head as she thought 'it could still be either way.'
Bella thinks that Edward looked at her with horror and then he looked back and forth between Bella and Jane and then looked relieved:
"Yes!" Edward and everyone else cheered.
"So, explain that one," Jasper challenged, raising his eyebrow. "Jane's gift is very different from Edward's and Aro's."
"Hmmm," Carlisle said truly thoughtful. "I don't know. What is it that all three of those gifts have in common – that isn't true about your own or Alice's."
"Didn't you say it before?" Edward said to Jasper. "It wouldn't have mattered if I stood in front of Bella or not … Jane's gift isn't like a bullet going at you …."
"She targets you in her mind!" Carlisle exclaimed. "They all work within the mind, but your gift is emotions … you change the entire climate of the room, physically change it …."
"Wow!" Jasper said his eyes going wide. "That would mean that Bella would be immune to most powers out there."
"Yes…quite the talent," Carlisle mused.
Edward just beamed at that.
Jane hisses after she realized that her powers don't work on Bella:
"Er … I don't really like the idea of Jane being mad at Bella like that," Edward shivered.
"Don't worry Eddy, there's nothing she could do," Emmett chuckled.
Aro asks if Bella would join them:
Edward growled.
"Is he seriously asking her?" Jasper asked, raising his eyebrow.
"A human that can stop his gift," Carlisle said. "I imagine that would be very intriguing to him."
"Then we'll have to make sure they never come across her," Edward groaned, "or any of us for that matter."
Caius says that only Bella's life is forfeit and that Edward an Alice could leave:
"Never!" Edward growled.
"I thought the ones that did the exposing are as liable as the exposed?" Jasper asked.
"Yes … but Edward wasn't the one that told her about us," Rosalie reminded him. "The mutt was."
"Right," Jasper nodded.
Aro says unless you intend to give her immortality:
"No," Edward groaned.
"This won't happen Edward," Alice said.
"I still don't want that to happen in the book," Edward growled.
It might be nice if she did change though, Alice thought to herself, then Edward could see her as a vampire and that might make him rethink this ridiculous idea of keeping her human.
"It doesn't matter, I won't change my mind," Edward growled and Alice shrugged.
Bella says Mean it and her thoughts on Edward would rather die than change her and it felt like she was kicked in the stomach:
"She thinks that you don't want her," Esme sighed. "You have to tell her the real reason or she's going to suffer over it."
Alice steps forward to Aro:
"Ah yes, now she can mean it," Jasper said. "And it will be a certain, or seem like it at least."
"Yeah, it really is good Shortie's there, Eddy – you never would have gotten anywhere without her," Emmett smirked.
Bella thoughts after Alice shows she willing to change her that if Edward was repulsive or that she would be an immortal annoyance:
"See, you have to tell her Edward," Esme said. "Don't let her believe that you don't want her."
"You would think that this whole situation would have done just that," Edward grumbled.
O
Flight
After Bella asks how Gianna wanted to be a vampire after she watched the people being file through the room and Edward's expression twisted in response:
"Doesn't she want to be a vampire?" Emmett asked.
"She wants to be part of our family," Alice said. "She must think that we'll protect her from becoming a monster … which we will – the best we can."
"Hmmm … that is interesting. I wonder how bad she will be," Emmett mused. "We'll be there, so it will be hard for her to get to any humans …."
Edward hissed, but Emmett ignored him, as did Jasper. "But she'll be a newborn … it'll be hard to control her …."
"Not to mention her tempter," Emmett smirked. "That gets her in enough trouble now … think what it will be like when she's a vampire …."
"Hmmm …." Jasper said thoughtfully. Edward looked thoughtful too. "But you do have to factor in her compassion … .She doesn't want to hurt anyone …."
"So, you think the count will be low?" Emmett smiled.
"Yeah, though it's difficult to know whether her compassion or her temper will be the more powerful force," Jasper said. "I'm still going to go with low …."
"Good. I thought it would be more than a few … but how low are you thinking?" Emmett asked.
"How about we say less than you," Jasper said, "and it should only be for her first year."
"That works," Emmett said. "Four thousand dollars?"
"It's your money," Jasper smirked.
"Yeah…says the one that just lost a thousand a few moments ago," Emmett said smugly.
"Are we done here?" Edward glared at his brothers.
"Yeah," Jasper said before he started to read again.
Mentions Bella is worried because Edward's eyes are so dark, and Edward tells her he's in better control over his nature:
"What does that mean?" Jasper asked, looking at Edward.
"I'm not sure," Edward said. "Maybe it has to be something that I have to live through to gain."
"I hope not," Alice said, "because you won't be living through anything like this."
Mentions Bella is surprised that Edward doesn't want to drive:
"That is unusual … you don't usually like other people driving," Emmett said. "I guess you're just as anxious to be near her, Eddy, as she is to be near you."
"Obviously," Edward said, rolling his eyes.
Edward promises he'll get Alice the 911 Turbos for Christmas:
"Thanks Edward," Alice said.
"Sorry, Shorty, but I don't have to keep that promise," Edward smirked.
"But, Edward…I want it," Alice pouted.
"Do you really want to wait a whole year to get it?" Edward raised his eyebrow. "I said Christmas."
"Oh," Alice said. "You're right, I'll have to get it myself."
Edward says 'she should' when talking about Rosalie feels awful:
"I am sorry," Rosalie apologized.
"I know," Edward said. "And it all worked out in the end."
Bella says 'it's not her fault' in her exhaustion:
"Naturally, she would defend me," Rosalie smiled. It seemed like Bella might have actually won her over this time.
Charlie is mentioned:
"Oh dear, he must have been a wreck," Esme fretted. "Poor Charlie, having to go through this and his friend's death all at once."
Charlie yells at Edward:
"It looks like things are going to be tense between you and Charlie," Emmett laughed.
"Yeah, you might not want to get on Charlie's bad side in this reality," Alice laughed too.
O
The Truth
When Edward says he's done 'nothing terribly exciting' since he left Bella:
"Argh … why are you so guarded?" Alice groaned. "Just tell her how miserable you were without her and be done with it."
"Oh …." Esme said looking like she really wouldn't want to hear that at all.
After Edward says he was hunting and Bella says he'd have to do better:
"She does have a point there," Jasper smiled.
"Yeah, but Eddy might not have done anything. He might have just sat around and moped all the time," Emmett chuckled.
Edward says he wasn't hunting for food but tracking:
"Tracking … why would you start tracking?" Jasper asked.
Edward on the other hand got it right away and was frowning, looking quite angry. He only said one word: "Victoria."
"Oh," Jasper said, and that made perfect sense to them all.
"You're right … you weren't very good," Emmett said.
When Edward says what he was tracking was nothing of consequence:
"Why aren't you telling her?" Alice hissed.
"How should I know?" Edward said looking like he was totally confused by what his book self was doing.
After Edward comments that werewolves were immature and volatile and the worst thing other than Victoria herself:
"Okay, so I sense there's going to be a werewolf conflict between us," Edward sighed. "I really have no idea what she went through and how helpful the pup was."
Bella thinks about Edward's imagined obligations, and the source of his guilt so she had to say something no matter how much that would cost her:
"Aw, Eddy, it looks like she's going to let you go," Emmett chuckled.
"I don't want that," Edward looked a little nervous.
"But she loves you, she has to let you go," Emmett shrugged, still smirking.
"But I don't want that," Edward repeated.
After Edward tells Bella that he couldn't live in a world that she didn't exist, and she says she's confused:
"It's easier for her to believe that I'm a delusion than it is to believe that I would still love her," Edward sighed.
Edward explains how he felt when she believed that he didn't love her after all the times that he had told her did, then her reactions that she still couldn't believe, and it was impossible:
"Argh," Edward said.
"You might want to try and explain how completely changed we become when we fall in love this time around," Esme offered. "Don't let her doubt you so much."
"And try not to be so conflicted – telling her to leave and keeping close at the same time," Alice added.
Edward asks Bella what she was thinking:
"Argh, that's right," Edward groaned.
"Forgot that your book self doesn't have a clue what she's thinking," Emmett laughed.
"Sort of," Edward said. "Well, it's been nearly the whole book before this problem came up after all."
Then Bella starts to cry and she says that she knew she was dreaming:
"Why is it easier for her to believe that I'm a delusion, than it is that I still love her?" Edward groaned.
Bella says it never made sense for Edward to love her:
"In a way, she has a point," Carlisle said. "A vampire should never fall in love with a human … even vampires like us."
"I don't think that's what she was talking about," Edward said coldly.
"Nor do I," Carlisle chuckled.
Edward asked Bella to tell him if she could still love him:
"Argh," Alice said. "That's why you're acting so oddly … you think she could have possibly moved on … that she wouldn't accept you back with open arms."
"Looks like it," Edward chuckled. "What an idiot I am."
Edward explaining that he left to give her a chance at a normal life, and he didn't like the danger his presence had on her:
"Not caring at all that it's what she wanted," Alice said. "Why the hell do you have to think your way is the best for her?"
Edward didn't have anything to say to that.
Edward explains that his life before her was like a moonless night and that she was like a meteor and then when she was gone everything was black and Bella thinks it was like he was describing her life:
"You two do seem to do things similarly," Esme smiled.
"Yeah, and that's why we're always bumping heads," Edward sighed and smiled at the same time.
Mentions of hunting Victoria again and Edward says that he would do better next time:
"Didn't you just promise to never leave her?" Esme asked.
"Yeah, don't worry Eddy, I'll take care of it for you," Emmett smirked.
Bella thinks that even with Emmett and Jasper's help she didn't want Edward going after Victoria:
"Apparently," Jasper replied. "I would have to say that Victoria is probably very good at avoiding things, but she wouldn't be a match in a fight."
"But think how Bella would feel, knowing that Edward's life was at even the smallest risk," Alice said matter-of-factly.
No one had anything to say to that.
After Bella says that her second biggest concern is the Volturi coming to look for her:
"She's right – that is a problem, but not as immediate as the Victoria issue," Carlisle said.
"What's her biggest problem then?" Esme asked, worried.
"I think we can all figure that out …." Edward said gloomily.
Edward says that Bella would be thirty before Aro thought to check on her:
"Hmmm … .that really depends on how interested Aro is in her," Carlisle said. "Time means little to him, but he can also be impatient when he sees something he wants."
Bella thinks that if she could turn thirty that Edward wasn't planning on staying long:
"Bella," Edward sighed. "You know I want you human. This has nothing to do with not being near you."
Bella asked if this was really about her soul or if he wasn't sure about wanting her around that long:
"It's all about your soul … I can't bear the idea of you losing it … especially for me," Edward sighed.
When Bella says that she would die eventually and Edwad says he'll follow her as soon as he can:
"That is so wrong," Alice said.
"It's how he feels," Edward said.
"But not you," Esme said, looking at him hopeful as everyone looked at him skeptically.
"I can't do it. I made a promise," Edward said, shifting a glare to Alice.
"Wow, whatever she did to get you to agree to that must have been good," Emmett said, showing his desire to know what it was.
"Yeah, it was," Edward admitted, but didn't say anything more.
When Edward mentions he has a few plans for when the Volturi come check on Bella:
"You can't run from them … especially not with Demetri there. He's the best tracker in the world," Jasper said.
"Hmm … I think I know where you're going with this," Carlisle said.
"What?" Edward asked.
"Demetri isn't a normal tracker," Carlisle said. "No distance matters to him, all he has to do is think of someone and he's drawn to them …."
"But he can't get into Bella's mind … he wouldn't be able to sense her," Jasper smiled.
"But I don't know how that helps much," Alice said. "Unless she's alone. He would just track Edward if he couldn't find her."
"It's still something," Edward shrugged.
When Bella says 'my mortality, I'm putting it to a vote:
"Argh," Edward groaned.
"Brilliant! She'll really be part of the family in no time," Emmett laughed and Esme beamed at his words.
"Not if I have anything to say about it," Edward said.
"That's true," Alice said and Edward looked at her skeptically. "What? You're very clever when you want something … you'll be able to stall her for a while."
"Argh," Edward groaned and Emmett laughed.
"That was the end of the chapter," Carlisle said and Rosalie took the book.
O
Vote
Bella thoughts on being on his back while runny through the forest and that it felt exhilarating:
"Hey, it looks like she's okay with my running now," Edward beamed.
"So I guess it wasn't so bad that she had those bikes," Alice said. "They must have helped with this."
Edward made a face at that, but didn't comment, nor did he let it affect his smile.
Bella tells Edward that she didn't trust herself to be enough for him:
"You've proven time and again that you more than deserve me," Edward sighed.
"She really has," Esme smiled. "And you'd better not be taking yourself lightly again, Edward," she added, looking at Edward sharply.
Edward asks what her greatest problem is and she touch his nose with her finger:
"Eddy's her biggest problem … but he's completely in control of himself now," Emmett said.
"But I could devastate her with one word," Edward said in a bitter, agonizing tone.
When Bella slowly realize that she knew it the whole time and that subconsciously she believe he cared about her and that's why she was hearing voices and then the deep silence before Edward asked 'voices':
Emmett, who was chuckling since she mentioned the voices, burst into laughter at Edward's reaction. "I didn't think she would have just blurted out that she heard your voice like that," he said. "That one must really have caught you off guard."
Bella saying that she wonders if she could hear Edward because underneath it all she knew that he hadn't stopped loving her:
"Oooowww, I like that explanation," Edward said.
"It would make sense too," Carlisle agreed. "Even more than the voice being her survival instinct …."
"Yes, and it just shows how much she learned about you during the time you were together," Esme offered. "She really had your reactions down."
How Edward's words came out strangled as he says 'you risked your life to hear:
"Oh, yeah," Edward chuckled at his own reactions.
"It must be funny – I totally forgot to even think about how you would react to that," Carlisle chuckled. "Seeing as how we already know everything,"
Edward explains that Bella reacted better to the separation than him:
"Oh, dear," Esme sighed, looking close to tears.
"She might have handled it better, but that's just because Bella isn't selfish and was able to make an effort for the people she loves … not wanting them to be hurting either," Alice said. "I'm sure if she was left to herself, she would have curled up into a ball too."
Edward explains that Demetri can't track Bella and she mentions he could still find Edward and he says he could handle himself and Emmett says that's an excellent plan:
"Idiot," Rosalie shook her head.
"I do have to admit, that would be fun," Emmett laughed.
"Maybe we could even lure him into a trap," Jasper smirked.
"That sounds good," Emmett grinned.
The voting started and Bella asks Edward 'do you want me to join your family':
"That was clever of her to phrase it like that," Carlisle said beaming, as were Esme and Alice. Jasper and Rosalie smirked, and Emmett laughed outright. "How could you say no?"
Edward groaned and pitched the bridge of this nose, though he too was smiling.
Emmett voted yes and that they would find some other way to pick a fight with Demetri:
"Idiot!" Rosalie scolded.
"That should be fun though …." Emmett said.
"No," Edward was the one to say. "We don't want any of the Volturi near here!"
"You're right," Emmett sighed.
Carlisle says that it's the only way and that Edward has chosen not to live without her and that didn't give him a choice:
"How could you risk her soul like that … for me?" Edward growled.
"You know that I don't believe her soul will be at risk," Carlisle said calmly. "Of course, I respect your view, and that is why I will never try to change your mind about this. But I can't lose you, son …."
Hearing an earsplitting crash after Carlisle's vote:
"What did you break Eddy?" Emmett chuckled.
"How would I know?" Edward hissed, still upset by Carlisle's vote.
"Well you could just tell us what you're thinking of breaking now … I bet it would be the same thing," Emmett laughed.
Edward didn't say anything for a few seconds, his jaw clenched until finally he said: "I would throw the TV through the window."
"Oh dear," Esme said, not liking the sound of that, but knowing that it could have been worse- like maybe him breaking the piano …
After Bella turns to Alice and asked 'where do you want to do this':
"No way!" Alice said, shaking her head. "There is no way I would risk that. I don't know if I have enough control for that."
Edward's head snapped towards her at that. His question clear on his face, 'but you threatened to turn her if I didn't promise to not kill myself when she died … '
'If you chose that, I would be forced to try wouldn't I?' Alice raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah, I think Carlisle will be the best bet," Emmett said. "He's proven that he could do it."
Bella keeps asking Alice to turn her and saying 'you can do it, I trust you':
"Argh," Edward groaned.
"Actually, Alice does love her too," Carlisle said. "That probably would be enough to stop her from getting carried away …."
"NO!" Edward shouted.
"Relax, I wasn't suggesting it," Carlisle backpedaled. "I was just saying that she probably could do it."
After they agree to changer her after graduation:
Edward tensed at that.
"Until graduation isn't that much of a stall," Emmett smiled "I can't wait to see Bella as a vampire."
After they are back in Bella's room and Edward ask if she could have anything what would it be:
"Where are you going with this?" Alice asked suspiciously.
"I'm not sure," Edward said, though it looked like he had a good idea.
"I just hope you're not trying to bribe her, because that really won't work," Emmett said.
Bella answering that she would want Edward to change her:
'You would never want to do that,' Alice thought. 'But I can see you using that to stall her.'
"That is my best bargaining chip, isn't it?" Edward sighed.
Bella says nineteen and that since he'll be a teen forever so will she:
'You would never want to do that,' Alice thought. 'But I can see you using that to stall her.'
"That is my best bargaining chip, isn't it?" Edward sighed.
When Edward says forget about time limits and then gives a condition and then asks 'marry me first':
Esme gasped and then started to beam. "Yes, please do …." she started, then looked at Edward incredulously. "That's no way to ask a girl to marry you."
"Sorry," Edward said and he had a goofy grin on his face.
"It looks like Eddy really likes that idea," Emmett teased.
Then Bella stares at him and ask what the punch line is:
"Oh," Alice said, then soundly laughed.
"What?" Edward asked. Alice was again thinking of something insubstantial to prevent him from knowing what she was thinking.
"You'll see," Alice said, still laughing.
Edward says that Bella wounded his ego because she took his proposal as a joke:
"Well, it wasn't a very good proposal," Esme snapped, looking annoyed and a little sad that Bella didn't say yes right away.
Bella explains isn't a priority to her because it was kiss of death to her parents:
At this Emmett and Alice laughed.
"Oh," Edward said. "Of course she would have to be adverse to marriage."
"And more so than the average person, too," Alice laughed.
When Edward asks if it would be better if he got a ring:
"Get a ring," Edward said.
"Are you going to get one now?" Esme asked excitedly.
"That's not exactly what I was thinking," Edward said. "I was thinking more that perhaps I could give her my mother's …."
"That would be perfect," Esme exclaim, beaming at him. "I'm sure she'll love it."
"If she ever agrees to marry me," Edward sighed.
"She will. Don't worry," Esme beamed.
After the conversation with Charlie and Edward tells Bella not to start anything with Charlie over him:
"Like you could stand it if you were banned from her house," Alice said.
"I would just sneak into her window," Edward shrugged.
"And miss all the time during the day that you could see her," Alice smirked.
"Oh," Edward sighed. "No … I wouldn't like that."
O
Epilogue: Treaty
Mentions Bella is feeling guilty about Jacob and that she doesn't think more and where's his happily ever after:
"I don't know, but it might not be such a good idea for you to see him now," Edward said. "He needs time to heal and it would be better if you're not there."
"Like the clean break that was supposed to be so good for Bella?" Alice questioned.
"Er …." Edward stammered, then shrugged his shoulders … this didn't really matter after all.
Bella thinks that Billy hates her now:
"They don't hate her," Esme said. "Who would hate her?"
"I don't see that one either," Edward said. "But they probably are mad at her."
"For choosing us over them," Esme sighed.
Edward thinks that Jacob wouldn't come near him, and Bella says that stupid because Jacob knows Edward isn't like other vampires:
"We are both instinctual and it wouldn't do to have us near each other," Edward said.
"Not to mention you like the same girl …." Emmett smirked. "That's like throwing gasoline on a fire."
Bella is angry when Edward almost says he would kill Jacob and he response that he would try hard not to do that:
Emmett laughed at that. "It sounds like you're doubting yourself, Eddy."
"It would be hard … it's better if he never gets that close," Edward said.
Edward says that Charlie is mad at her and then they see the motorcycle in the driveway:
"Oh no," Emmett said laughing. "That would definitely explain it."
"I can't believe this," Edward frowned, looking angry. "Why would the mutt do that to her?"
Bella asks Edward to just give her a round with Jacob before she deals with Charlie:
"Eddy would never let that happen, besides, I doubt you could even hurt the wolf if you do punch him," Emmett chuckled.
"It would more likely hurt her," Jasper laughed.
Edward explains Jacob's thoughts that he didn't want to hurt Bella, but get her grounded so she couldn't be near Edward:
"I doubt he'll like that," Emmett said.
"No one ever seems to," Edward smirked, rolling his eyes. "Go figure."
Edward sincerely thanking Jacob and that he would owe him for the rest of his existence:
"That I will … or would have, if this was ever going to happen," Edward said. "Hmmm … .that's interesting …."
"What?" Emmett asked.
"Well, he hasn't done anything yet … he doesn't even really know Bella, but it's obvious from this that he would do anything for her," Edward said.
"I'm still waiting for the interesting part," Emmett sighed impatiently.
"I wonder if I still owe him … for being a friend she didn't even realize she had," Edward mused out loud.
"I don't know," Carlisle said.
Edward says he would give Jacob anything in his power and he raises and eyeber and Edward says that's not in his power:
"He wants you to leave," Emmett chuckled.
"Naturally," Edward laughed.
Jacob says the treaty says 'bite not kill' and Bella realizes what that means and says that's none of Jacob's business:
"Probably not the best thing for her to say," Edward groaned. "I bet the pup just thought it was a precaution – not an eventuality."
Talking about Victoria and how she left as soon as she caught Alice's scent:
"That might be true," Jasper said. "She's going to be incredibly difficult to catch …."
"Don't worry … we'll do it," Emmett smirked.
Bella protest at both Edward and Jacob declaration of hunting Victoria:
"I don't like the sound of that," Jasper said. "They won't back down, that's for sure."
"And neither will we," Emmett said.
"That's why this isn't good," Jasper said. "Too many cooks in the kitchen. She could use that against us."
When Bella thinks that Jacob's pain is like her pain:
Edward sighed at that.
'Don't like how intertwined they are,' Alice thought.
"Or that it's my fault that it had to happen at all," Edward said.
Bella takes a step toward Jacob but Edward stops him and even after she says it will be okay and Jacob is angry and his chest seems to swell as it shuddered:
"Great … the pup wants a fight," Edward groaned.
"He's the underdog … no pun intended," Carlisle smirked. "He would have to fight harder to try to get her back."
"That's not going to happen," Edward hissed.
"And I don't see him giving up any time soon," Carlisle added.
End of book:
"That's the end of the book," Alice said.
"Well, that was quite interesting," Emmett said. "Let's read the next one."
"I don't see the point … none of these things are going to happen," Rosalie rolled her eyes.
"We have to read though," Emmett pouted. "I want to know what happens next … besides, Jazz and I have a bet about her being a vampire and I really want to win it. And everyone knows that Eddy wouldn't pass up a chance to hear Bella's thoughts … fictional or not," Emmett laughed.
"True …." Edward agreed.
"I really am looking forward to this next book too," Carlisle said. "She brings up a lot of interesting questions. I would like to see what other revelations come up in this one. It's a good thing that I have the next few days off … I wouldn't want to miss any of this."
"I hope you two get married in this book," Esme said. "She would make such a lovely bride."
"Yeah," Edward agreed. "Though I think that she'll put up a big fight before that happens."
"Hurry up and get the book already, Shortie," Emmett said.
"All right," Alice said and was gone for only a second before she was back with the book in her hand.
