Seiya got a new job, or so he said. Never a talker, he did not share any details. His friends and roommates – Shiyru, Shun, and Jabu – saw him getting up early before sunrise, which they found odd. They all knew Seiya wasn't an early bird since the day they met him. He hadn't touched the food in the fridge either, which was also out of character. Growing up on the streets, Seiya treated every eating opportunity as his last one. Jabu used to complain about Seiya eating his food every now and then.
Getting up early in the morning and not eating anything in the house – it must have something to do with his new job.
So what is his new job?
After pressing him repeatedly and bribing him with beers, Seiya finally blurted out, "I'm a bodyguard protecting a rich girl."
Jabu laughed out loud. He looked at Seiya's usual outfit and remarked, "And that rich girl is not even getting you a suit for the job?"
Indeed, most professional bodyguards wear suits and ties with sunglasses; James Bond even wore an Omega watch.
"Not all bodyguards are like Kevin Costner," Shun pointed out.
"If you are her bodyguard, shouldn't you be protecting her now?" Shiryu asked.
Seiya checked his phone. "Not at this hour, unless I get a text from her."
It was only two o'clock in the afternoon.
"That makes no sense," Jabu said. "If she's in danger right now, even if she has the time to text you, how long does it take you to get to her? You are not fast like lightning!"
Seiya said nothing else and went straight to his room.
Completely unaware that a small piece of paper fell on the floor from his pocket.
It was a receipt from a Greek diner paid by Saori Kido at 8:15 AM, and the bill was more than $50.
Saori Kido.
Kido…as Alman Kido?
Shiryu, Shun, and Jabu had met Alman Kido, a wealthy businessman who donated a good sum of his wealth to group homes and troubled youth programs. Dohku hand spoken highly of Alman Kido as well.
Jabu immediately looked up the diner and found its address. The three were going to check it out.
They went to that Greek diner the next morning with Shiryu driving. They asked for a table in the back and spotted Seiya sitting with a girl who wore a white dress next to the window with the curtain down.
The server came with their food. Seiya got a huge steak with salad and dinner roll; the girl only got a cup of coffee, a bowl of broth, and a small salad.
"Wow," Shiyru found it very interesting.
The girl took out a small bag from her purse; it was a bag of capsule pills. She laid out a red one, a blue one, a pink one, and a green one on her napkin. She counted them and looked at Seiya. Seiya gave her a nod and she took the capsule pills with a glass of water.
"You think she's mentally unbalanced?" Shun whispered.
Seiya ate as the girl used her phone. Apparently, someone sent her a funny text and her eyes brightened. She wrote something down on the napkin and took a picture of it.
"Beautifully mentally unbalanced," Jabu commented. "Look at her eyes."
Seiya looked rather annoyed. He placed a piece of his steak on her plate, but she didn't seem to appreciate it though. She rolled her eyes and looked away. Seiya kept on offering his piece of steak until he forcefully fed it into her mouth. She was choking and coughing while Seiya was smiling. She ignored him and went back to her phone. Seiya just sat. The server filled a cup of decaffeinated coffee for the girl and a glass of water for Seiya; he then placed the bill on the table. The girl handed the server her credit card and took out a spray from her purse. She sprayed it on her face, neck, arms, and legs. And without a warning, she sprayed it in Seiya's face.
It was approximately thirty minutes later she got up and left with Seiya behind her.
"Seiya is a terrible bodyguard," Shiyru said. "He focused too much on her. His main job duty is to make sure she's safe, not making her happy. He needs to be more aware of the surroundings and remain emotionally detached."
The server came and placed their check on the table.
The price was about $100 before tax and tip.
"I guess we focused too much on Seiya instead of paying more attention to the prices on the menu," Jabu said sarcastically.
"You know who's a much better option for a bodyguard?" Shiyru went on. "Ikki."
Sitting in the same diner, a muscular guy in his mid-thirties texted on his phone. Miss Saori has a new boyfriend. I see him with her everyday.
Guraad coldly deleted the text.
She was in her late forties, dressed mostly in black.
She looked at her right-hand man, Nero and said hatefully, "The girl got herself a boy toy."
She and Alman Kido were married for more than twenty years. The marriage was doomed from the start, with her having a miscarriage on their wedding day. She sank into depression, especially after learning that she couldn't conceive again. Life became worse after she and Alman adopted Saori after a trip to Greece.
It was Alman who really wanted Saori, not Guraad. While Alman was a loving father, Guraad was indifferent. After Saori grew into a beautiful and smart teenager, Guraad became more or less like an evil stepmother who hates Snow White. Alman didn't like that and the couple constantly argued. When Guraad gave Alman an ultimatum to choose between her and Saori, Alman kicked her out and filed for a divorce.
The divorce proceedings took several years and were still on-going.
"Why do you care?" Nero said nonchalantly. "She's not even your daughter. It's Alman whom you should care more about."
"You think he's dead?"
"That's a possibility. He has been gone for months. He wouldn't leave her behind."
Angrily, Guraad threw her phone at Nero. "Get out!"
Her phone only narrowly missed Nero, who didn't even flinch.
"Aiolus, I can't stand him anymore," Saori complained to Aiolus about Seiya on the phone. "If he calls me princess one more time–."
"That should be the least of your worries," Aiolus said. "If Cassius has an IQ higher than a 0, then he would've stayed away if he sees you with someone by your side. But do me one favor."
"Don't fire Seiya?"
"Don't get him into any trouble."
"That's not a problem. I told him if Cassius is being mean to me again, just give him an angry glare."
"The best way to handle trouble is not getting into trouble."
"So I should just flee when I see Cassius?" Then she changed the subject. "Aiolus, I'm very worried about Dad. What if he's not coming back? He and mother are still divorcing. Shura just drags his feet. I wish Dad had taken my advice on hiring a different divorce attorney."
"Shura is a great lawyer. He's attentive to details."
Of course Aiolus would defend Shura, his best friend since law school.
"Fine, I'll take your word for it. By the way, how are things going for you? You told me that you are taking over the law firm after Shion's retirement. Ulta is having a sale on supplements. I'm taking four now, for my skin, hair, stress, and vitamin D. Maybe you could use them too."
"No thanks, coffee is good enough for me."
"Did you see the note I sent you? The one I wrote on the napkin?"
"Yeah, your cursive certainly needs more practice."
"Look, I have to tell you something. I miss the days we have breakfast together at the diner. Remember how we met? Dad was fighting with mother all night, and the first thing I wanted to do after waking up in the morning was to get out of there. I went to the diner and it was full. We were the only ones who came by ourselves and the host said that we could share a table."
"I remember."
"We used to have breakfast at the diner every Sunday. I haven't seen you since Dad's out of town. Now I'm scared that he's never coming back."
"Did he tell you where he's going?"
"Russia, that's all he told me before he left with Tatsumi. Now I don't know whether it's Moscow, or St. Petersburg, or Siberia."
"I don't like the sound of this. You have money of your own, right?"
"Yeah."
"Good, you'll need it in case you need a lawyer."
"Aren't you a lawyer?"
"I'm a criminal lawyer."
"Good clarification. How's Aiolia?"
"He still has a lot to learn."
"He joined the law firm a few months ago, right?"
Seeing his younger brother Aiolia looking at him, Aeolus said, "Yeah, look I have to be at the court tomorrow. I'll talk to you later, okay?"
"Okay, good night."
"Night."
Aiolus hung up, but before he could say anything, his younger brother shook his head and walked away.
