Happy 2021, everybody! We survived one double h hockey stick of a year that was 2020. Time to leave 2020 behind us and move on! Although we all like to forget 2020, let's be honest, we can't forget.

The year might of started out okay for us, minus Kobe's death on January 26th, along with his teenaged daughter and others on that doomed helicopter. But other parts had it worse with the Australian wildfires and the pandemic starting in December of 2019, hence the name, Covid 19.

Trump downplayed the virus because he didn't 'want anybody to panic.' So the US wasn't really affected until March. Then we all had to go on lockdown for what seemed like forever. People say that this would go away by Easter or the summer months, but those days came and went and Covid was still a problem.

'Black Lives Matter' really took off after George Floyd's cruel and extremely unnecessary death on Memorial Day. And his death wasn't the only African American death by a police officer in 2020. Peaceful and violent protests broke out though out the country and other parts of the globe.

Famous people like Ellen DeGeneres started being canceled this year. Entitled women dubbed 'Karens' refused to wear masks and acted like unbehaved children when they didn't get their way. They almost didn't seem human on the way that they acted. People still went out to parties and gatherings, despite the pandemic. Stores were empty on toilet paper a lot because people were 'panic buying'. The country was divided. It was a big, ugly mess.

Along with Kobe and his daughter, more people died. We lost Glee actress, Naya Rivera. Bond actor Sean Connery died on Halloween. We also lost Alex Trebax of Jeopardy fame. And of course, so many others due to the gosh awful virus. If you lost a loved one due to the virus, we, the Smiths, offer you our deep condolences.

But of course when we thought it couldn't be good again, it did. The first African American, Asian American and woman became the Vice President of the United States. We also got Joe Biden, the oldest President, back in office. They haven't been sworn in yet, but they will, if all goes according to plan, on the 21st. Will Trump act like a big baby and go out kicking and screaming? We'll soon see.

But of course, the greatest news of all came shortly after the five day long election, the news of a vaccine. And afterwards, another vaccine, both with high effectiveness rates. A handful of people already got them, but the rest of us will have to continue to wait.

And that's basically all that happened. Now, I am aware that's not everything that happened in the past year. I'm just a fish, so don't kill me! I am confident about this year getting better. It won't be right away, in the spring I say. And of course, there will still be bad things that will happen as they do every year and can't be helped. That's just the way it is. But knowing that hope is on the horizon can put a smile on anybody's face. We started out thinking 2020 will be a good year, some people joking on 2020 vision, but even people with perfect vision couldn't see what 2020 was going to bring.

So, did I jinx up 2021 just now? I don't know. But in the meantime, listen to the safety precautions and wear a fudging mask when out in public. Don't be a Karen and everything will be fine. Let 2021 happen and prey for it not to be a 2020 part 2.
