Netflix's Wish Dragon has a lot of similarities to Disney's Aladdin. And while it is obviously that Disney's take is better and far more superior, this film has it's comedy and charm.
Din is living in China as a college kid. Although he likes his life, he misses his childhood friend who had to move. On one of Din's deliveries, a strange old man gives him a teapot and claims that it is magic. Din opens the teapot and Long, the magical wish dragon appears.
Having last seen the world 1,000 years ago, Long is in awe by the word's advancements. Bad people want the teapot and dragon for themselves, especially one guy who likes to violently kick people.
Din wishes to get in his childhood's friend's party and does. Now I'm not going to tell you what happens next. You're going to have to watch to find out.
So if you're wondering what Aladdin will be like in China, the Genie is a dragon and has childhood friends instead of future lovers, this might be the answer that you're looking for. If not, well that's it then. And fun fact: the story was originally set in China, so this Aladdin set in China kind of makes sense. Crazy right? Mind blown! You're welcome.
Netflix's last film in China Over the Moon is better, but again, this film is pretty funny and has its moments. Long is no Genie and can't replace the great late Robin Williams and never will, but he still can pull it off pretty well, just not as well. There may be no magic carpet ride, but Wish Dragon can still take you on a magical ride.
