"Being angry isn't gonna help. In fact, it's the opposite." I say. "Take a deep breath and calm down. Lightning probably isn't for you."

She takes my advice, though I can feel her frustrations. I try to think of a way to cheer her up.

"Hey, look at the bright side." I smile. "Your element could be something really rare too. It's not basic, so either it's mixed or advanced. Doesn't that sound cool?"

And that didn't work. I don't think she cares what element it is as long as she could use magic, and she's losing hope.

More time passes, with Ruby trying the other three advanced elements: Magma, Ice, and Metal, and none working. This was a little strange, I thought metal for sure was gonna work, but apparently not. So basic and advanced aren't it.

Then either it's mixed, or the tier above. There are tons of mixed elements, hundreds and hundreds that it'd be a slog to go over them all. Instead, I told her to start with the third tier, Light and Dark.

"Actually, you probably already know this, but I can use light magic," I say, summoning a ball of light over my palm. "It's pretty strong and especially deadly against Grimm. I'd say it's the perfect weapon to use on them."

"So how does it feel?"

I was about to read from the book but closed it as I focused on the feeling of the light spell. "Warm, soothing in a way. It's like, between the feeling of water and fire magic. Between calm and fierce."

Ruby narrows her eyes in concentration.

"Try closing your eyes, and imagine a ball of light." I continue as Ruby takes my advice. "A soothing ball of light, something that makes you feel safe."

She concentrates harder, and all of a sudden, she flinches. I was about to ask if she feels okay, but she speaks up before I do. "I-I feel it! There's something there!"

Slowly but surely, dim light forms in Ruby's palm, shaping into a tiny sphere. She opens her eyes, in disbelief at the spell she managed to cast. While weak, it was something, and it proved that Ruby had a very powerful element.

"I-I got it!" Her face stretches into the biggest smile I've seen as she shows me the spell. "Look, Reid, I did it! I can use magic just like you!"

"Heh, that you can." I pat her head. "And with light as a starter element too. You have no idea how powerful it can get."

Just as I thought, Ruby doesn't care what element she got as she looks at the tiny spell in her hand, happiness overflowing from her as she celebrates. "I can use magic!"

"You were really looking forward to this, weren't you?"

"You're kidding?!" Ruby turns to look at me, the beautiful smile never leaving her face. "I've always wanted to do this as a kid! It was my childhood dream!"

"As I'm sure a lot of other kids have." I nod. "Alright, now that we discovered what magic you have, how about we start training for real?"

"I'm ready!"

"I'm sure you are." I ruffle her hair, prompting her to giggle. "Let's start with something small, a utility spell. This."

I cast a small orb of light that floats near me. "What it does is pretty simple. Let's say that you won't need any flashlights with this around... and it also scares weak Grimm like Creeps."

It takes a while, but I don't particularly blame her. She just started using magic right now - it's obvious that she's gonna struggle with even the smallest of spells. Not to mention, light is more complicated than fire or water and takes a bit more MP than them too.

Though, to be fair, Ruby doesn't really have an issue in that department. She has twice my MP for god's sake.

She creates the orb of light, though hers flickers a bit. Even then, Ruby was elated to have cast another spell.

"It feels like a dream." She states. "I really have magic."

"And it's only about to get stronger from now on." I pat her head. "Imagine how Yang would react to this?"

Ruby pauses, her excitement suddenly being joined by uncertainty. I frown a little, surprised at this. She fidgets as the spell dies out, her silver eyes nervously looking away as she's unable to meet my own.

...Did I say something wrong?

"A-about Yang…" Ruby scratches her cheek. "Um… are you gonna have to… you know…"

Welp, guess this talk came a lot earlier than I thought it would. Should've expected as much. How exactly am I gonna say this, though? It's so awkward.
