Chapter 3: Trust from a Recidivist.
Masters of manipulation?
-(6:15 PM, Vale City Residential, Unknown Area)-
(No Character Point of View)
The afternoon sunset was approaching Vale Kingdom after a busy day for all of its citizens. Their daily work schedule was close to being over as most of them started to return to their homes by walking or using any means of transportation. Looking onto the streets, it was somewhat crowded with citizens either heading home, finish errands this late, socializing, or just outside to get some air. Same goings from different days of the week, this was the usual status in Vale during close to sunset. Very few students from Beacon were flying back to the academy in order to take a long break for the entire weekend, but a minority of them stayed in the city to continue their time of fun and socializing.
However, three people in the crowd were clearly not citizens who were a part of the usual, due to looking out of the ordinary. The attire they wore seemed more combat oriented than casual. Led by a young woman with long and slightly puffy black hair, her two acquittances who seemed to be like her bodyguards were following her closely while trying to get any sort of information out of her. The green haired and dark-skinned girl seemed a bit irritated by the lack of info she was given, but her aggravated attitude was halted by the dark grey-haired young man with prosthetic legs.
The green-haired girl sighed after a long five minutes of walking down the sidewalk, which was almost turning empty. "Are we even there yet?"
"Emerald. One of these days, you're going to have to learn how to be patient rather than complain. Just follow orders and I'll make sure to tell you everything as soon as I get my share of the info, as well." Their leader scolded, which did make Emerald stay silent immediately.
The dark grey-haired man raised an eyebrow when he heard his boss mention the last part of her sentence. "Wait, you don't know anything too, Cinder?"
"All I heard from the higherups was that this group of guys we were told to meet up with is able to significantly help our cause." She responded boldly. "Any other questions this time, Mercury?"
He rolled his eyes and shrugged his shoulders. "Just wanted know before I get my feet wet."
"Believe me, I wish the same too. But just remember our place, we're nothing but foot soldiers in their eyes." Cinder reminded their status to just stick to the plan and don't question anything. Including herself.
With another ten minutes of walking passed, Emerald decides to look at her phone to confirm their location on the map. She nervously scanned the streets as it was starting to become more lower in class and seem ghetto compared to the block they were in. She looked up at Cinder, still watching her front to see that the lack of citizens started make suspicion crawl under her skin. "I'm guessing we're almost there…?"
"Yes. I hope you're done bellyaching." Cinder nodded her head and turned towards an alleyway that had a graffiti signal with an uncanny style to it. The emblem almost matched a marking a Grimm would have, the more they evolved. It was freshly sprayed in red paint, or so it seemed. The smell that was alluding from it gave it away, due to its metallic scent that almost made Cinder vomit. "Damn it…" She gagged. "Talk about a good welcoming scent."
Mercury shook his head and covered his nose. "This alleyway is already disgusting enough as it is…"
"Try to look better than this dump. Because the boys we're meeting is right there." Cinder pointed out as she led the two closer to the four men down the alleyway.
The four men were wearing hooded cloaks as their faces were partially visible due to the limited lighting of the alley and the sunset. One of the men, who seemed like the leader of the group, wore a completely dark cloak while the other three had their own different colors of the following: one had a blood red cloak, the other had a white cloak with some red stains on it; assuming it was blood, and the last one had a grey cloak with partial amounts of green blending in like a pattern. It was hard to tell if these men were armed, but they seemed less tense as soon as they saw Cinder and her two acquaintances approached them. Their leader in the black cloak turned his head to reveal his welcoming smile while his three followers each had a different reaction. The blood red cloaked man huffed and looked away bitterly. The white-bloodied cloaked one turned around to reveal he was holding a rat while playing around with it like his own pet, giving them a small glance before focusing his attention on the rodent. And the grey cloaked man gave them a blank and emotionless expression, followed by a small nod.
"Ammit?" Cinder called out.
The man nodded and gave a formal bow to the three of them. "Correct. At your service."
She reached them close enough as the black cloaked man, named Ammit, stepped forward. "Of all the places, you chose this unsanitary alleyway?"
"Is the almighty Cinder Fall that sensitive to getting dirty?" He chuckled. "Don't worry. My friend in the white cloak over there already cleaned up most of the rats."
"Cleaned up most of the rats? How did he do that?" Emerald asked and took a good look at the other man he mentioned, only to be horrified by what she just witnessed.
The white hooded man was soothing the rat in his hands before things took a sharp 180 turn. As the rat curiously looked up at him, he opened his mouth and devoured the rat from top to bottom, letting out its squeals of agony heard between everyone in the alley. Mercury shuttered in disgust while Cinder flinched and looked away to avoid the nauseating sight. Emerald, on the other hand, almost threw up from the disgusting sight of the man eating a rodent that would've contained diseases and was extremely dirty from the environment.
"Remember to wipe your mouth." The grey cloaked man reminded him.
"No problem." He giggled and wiped his mouth with his own white cloak, a subtle nod to where the red stains on his cloak came from.
"With a napkin, moron. You already have enough stains on that cloak."
"Nothing but a little bit of bleach would fix the problem."
Emerald cleared her throat and gagged a bit. "Yeah. Same goes for my eyes."
"This hungry little fella is Vapula." Ammit smiled and patted his shoulder while he devoured the rat whole. "Here's a tip: When he's hungry, try not to die in his presence."
Emerald gagged violently and looked away to hide her chance of vomiting. Fortunately, she was able to hold it in. "Why the hell does that freak eat humans too?"
Vapula sighed with a crazed looking smile to her. "First off, that was rude. Second, I eat Faunus and other animals too." He chuckled manically from his excitement of consuming more food. "Why do I eat so much? Sorry. That's none of your business."
"Well…good. It might be more disgusting than I can even handle."
Ammit pointed his finger at the blood red cloaked man and chuckled a bit. "That young man is Basilisk. Now, I'll be honest with you. He basically doesn't like meeting new people."
Basilisk rolled his eyes and folded his arms. "You know me, I don't like anybody."
"Well, aren't you a ray of sunshine." Mercury said sarcastically.
"You should consider lighting up to. That way, you can effortlessly burn down your house, next time."
Before Mercury could talk back, he was halted by Cinder as Ammit was about to introduce the last man with the grey and green patterned cloak.
"And that poor man is Asag. Was once a dedicated doctor, but…let's just say he's just had a troubled childhood regarding his hometown during the Faunus movement."
Asag sighed and gave them a serious expression before following it off with a nod. "My tragic past aside, it's nice to meet you three. Hopefully we can get along well." He said in a somewhat monotone voice.
"I'll give you credit for being the most welcoming out of those two." Emerald commented while pointing her thumb at Basilisk and Vapula.
Asag nodded and backed away quietly to make Ammit lead the show with the negotiations with the three shady individuals. Cinder snapped her fingers to Mercury as he handed her a folder containing reports and photos of a high value target that she and the White Fang were affiliated into. Curiously, Ammit opened the folder to get a good look to whom they were after, someone that was able to get two factions' attention to commence a joint operation against said target. Upon looking at the title of the first paper, Ammit's expression tensed up immediately as his eyes were glued to the reports and photos.
Target: "Wyvern"
Objective: High Value Target against the entire White Fang Organization. The elimination of Wyvern is considered Top Priority.
Activity: Responsible for killing hundreds or thousands of White Fang soldiers and agents, along with others involved in allied criminal organizations all across Remnant for the past 10 years. Reported rumors from our agents suspects that Wyvern is a military advisor from the Drahën Empire. Possibly residing in Beacon Academy temporarily before departure. Information is still unclear if this is true. All agents on the ground must continue to gather intel.
Chance of Success on Elimination: 8%-10%.
With the folder already scanned thoroughly, Ammit shut it and handed it back to Cinder as she gave it to Mercury yet again. "So, you're aware of Wyvern as well? Considering that folder you gave me belonged to the White Fang, I assume that he's been hunting down those animals too?"
"Our informant told us that you are familiar with this guy. It is clear to me that he has pissed off the organization, and gotten my attention, as well. If Wyvern is eliminated, then he will no longer be a threat to the White Fang, nor will he be a threat towards me in the future." Cinder smiled as she was jumped into this plan for the sake of her own cause. "And judging by that abysmal chance of success, maybe you can help us improve that percentage, can you?"
Ammit chuckled loudly and nodded his head with a wicked smirk. "Of course. Of course~. Have they already taken direct action recently?"
"The White Fang isn't cocky enough to send in some of their agents to go after him after many failed attempts. It would be a suicide mission, and a great waste of troops and resources." Cinder shook her head to his response. "However, I have made some deals with the criminal underground here in Vale. A guy named Roman Torchwick is already planning on his search in eastern Vale, and near Beacon Academy."
"And you assume a bunch of humans like them will have a chance against Wyvern? Let alone his colleagues of misfits?" Basilisk folded his arms and glared at the three of them.
Emerald stepped forward and gave an even sharper glare back. "And what are you supposed to be? Another faunus high on his ego than his IQ?"
"Thankfully, I'm not that insensitive excuse of a race. Same goes to you pathetic creatures you call yourselves, humans."
"Pfft. You're basically hating yourself. You have got to be either human or faunus."
"You don't need to know anything about me. We're not friends."
"Good. I intend to leave it like that." She rolled her eyes and made a small snort. "Just so you know, be glad you'll be getting the same benefits as the three of us when your boss accepts the deal. But from that point on, you'll have to know your place."
Basilisk rolled his eyes. "I hope my position comes with a leash so I can make sure you won't blindly attack me or my allies."
"You'll be getting one too."
"Enough." Cinder ordered Emerald to lockdown with her attitude.
Ammit let out an annoyed sigh and patted Basilisk's shoulder. "Basil, please. Professionalism is important for negotiations like this. We wouldn't want to cause a stir around this alley and break this alliance, now would we?"
"Fine." He clenched his fists and turned his back in order to avoid violence. Although, he wanted to resolve it that way.
Cinder looked down at Emerald and pulled her away from Basilisk. "You can either cut that crap attitude out, or I'm sending you back at the hub."
Emerald huffed. "What idiot thought these guys would be disciplined to help us out?"
"Are you insulting my authority?" A voice asked as someone in black and red walked down the alleyway with a custom mask shielding his eyes along with holding is sheathed sword.
"Adam. You're late." Cinder said.
"My tardiness doesn't matter." He stated. "All that mattered was that I wanted you three to see who you'll be working with alongside me, and some…'friends'."
"Great. More faunus garbage." Basilisk mumbled to himself.
Adam looked over to Ammit and pointed his thumb at Cinder and her team. "Have you already talked to them about one of our targets?"
"Wyvern? Yeah. Hard to forget about that waste of air." Ammit chuckled.
"I know Wyvern is one dangerous individual. But what's so special about this guy? I've heard worse people than him and yet you're acting like he's the spawn of the devil." Cinder asked as Adam immediately stepped forward with a tensed expression, even behind his mask, covering his eyes.
He rubbed his temples and huffed out a huge relief of anger as soon as he remembered a faded memory he never moved on from. "That freakshow has got another thing coming when I see him again."
Emerald rolled her eyes at how easily sensitive he was being. "Again? I take it you know him from before?"
"Are you kidding me? He's responsible for killing hundreds of my brothers and sisters in the White Fang." Adam replied, clearly having an expression of rage to his voice upon mentioning his actions. "Let me show you something." He went for his phone and showed Emerald and the others a picture of a horrific bloodbath of White Fang agents, laying on the ground, lifelessly. "One of the agents, codenamed "Blood Runner" along with his team were killed after kidnapping a governor's daughter from the Drahën Empire mainland. To answer your question: Yes, Wyvern did this. And take a guess when this happened."
"Hell if we know." Cinder shrugged as she didn't have an answer and just wanted him to tell them.
"My guess was it wasn't too long ago." Mercury guessed as he continued to examine the photo. "That's one messed up murder scene. Probably miles much worse than what I've done."
Adam shook his head and showed another picture of the same gruesome scene. However, it showed the clear faces of the agents, with some of their expressions contorted in terror after witnessing their bloody fate happen before them. "Wyvern is seventeen years old at the moment. But with these killings, he was only seven. A mere child did this!"
"This guy is screwed up than I thought…" Emerald cringed and looked away from the photo.
He nodded in agreement to that statement. "There are rumors about Wyvern being mentally unstable. However, we're not exactly sure what and how this was caused into him. But, that's not a case for me to back down on. Just because he's unstable doesn't mean he can't die."
"Watch your tongue there, Adam." Ammit stepped forward and gave a rather serious expression, something that didn't seem natural to him. "I've known Wyvern before. And let me tell you, one wrong move can mean a barbaric death for you, by his hands. You understand?"
Partially taking in Ammit's suggestion of controlling his emotions, Adam sighed and folded his arms in order to convince him that he was calm, at the moment. "Fine. What else can you tell me about Wyvern?"
"Are you aware of his nationality? Drahënese?"
"Yeah. The Drahën Empire. The Belladonna Family told me stories about their time when they were at war with them seventeen years ago whenever my ex-girlfriend would take me to her house." Adam clenched his fists from the mention of his ex-lover. "All I remember was the Battle of Solace City and the evacuation at that city's harbor."
"And are you aware of how they treat your kind?" Ammit raised an eyebrow to find out what he knows. "As radical criminals and terrorists, I mean."
"I prefer you don't call us that." Adam took offense to that title, even though the White Fang has committed activities that would label them as such. "I've heard the horror stories. It's pretty religiously practiced at this point. Are they true?"
Ammit replied with a nod, which did make Adam uneasy in that sense. "They never show mercy towards criminals, terrorists, and corrupted officials as they do with the Grimm. The Drahënese Society has viewed the three as those who has provoked war against humanity. And I don't think I need to explain what they do to them. Or mention 'Nightfall Facility'."
"You're right. I've heard enough." Adam halted the subject. "Everything else about the Battle of Solace and Nightfall Facility is nothing but Drahënese Propaganda."
"What I'm saying is this: Since Wyvern is Drahënese, expect the same horrible treatment whenever you face him one day. He has been trained ever since he was a little child, so there's a huge chance he can outmatch you."
"I'll believe it when I see it." Adam cockishly rolled his eyes under the mask.
Basilisk sighed and approached him with a smirk that had doubt written all over it. "Facing Wyvern alone is going to be your death sentence."
"That is why I am talking to your leader here about coming together to make sure he is dealt with swiftly. Now, back off and let the professionals continue to negotiate." He threatened as Ammit agreed by gently pushing Basilisk back to Asag and Vapula.
"Hearing that from an undisciplined child doesn't sound valid. But, okay then." He taunted back.
Ammit chuckled slightly before looking back at Adam, who was already giving an angered expression. "Truth be told, you really need to control your anger too. But I digress." He reached for his pocket to take out his contact device, still in perfect condition as if he bought a new one. "Shall you initiate an oath? Or your kind doesn't do that sort of thing?"
With that small joke, Adam chuckled a bit and shook his head. "We're not that formal. But all I ask is that you take my word on assisting the White Fang until Wyvern's elimination. If you managed to pull this off, then we are in your debt and will repay you and your three friends in any sort of way. Money, slaves, dust, anything."
"I appreciate the offer for those suggestions. But maybe we can reach to a much better agreement."
"I'm listening."
With the two of them having their exchange, Cinder along with Emerald and Mercury decided to wait outside of the alley in order to give them privacy. But it was mostly in order to get out of the unsanitary alleyway. With fifteen minutes passing by, Cinder was about to head back inside again, only to see Adam walking out and giving her a sign to follow him. She peeked over his shoulder to see Ammit, Basilisk, Vapula, and Asag were all gone. They most likely left the alleyway as soon as Adam was regrouping with the three.
"Well?" She asked for any sort of report.
"We got what we needed. They'll be meeting us at one of our Headquarters to discuss their agreement into helping us." Adam answered her curiosity and folded his arms. "Hopefully Ulysses will like them as much as I will."
"What did you offer?" Cinder asked curiously.
"I'll be granting him clearance to know our top-secret operations and intel regarding all the four kingdoms, and the Drahën Empire. Not to mention what we have in stock in our weapons and research department."
Emerald gave a skeptical expression as she thought giving that amount of information is too much. "Don't you think that's a bit too much for them to get and know?"
Mercury agreed as he nodded his head after Emerald's statement. "Yeah. You seem to be spoiling them a little too early. Or are you that excited for them to kill Wyvern?"
"Relax, fellas." Adam replied to their concerns. "In return, I got everything else I should know about Wyvern. So, things might become easier from this point on."
"Oh? And are you convinced that what you were given will give us the upper hand?" Cinder tilted her head curiously.
"I'll be sure to share you three some of the things I recently discovered. Believe me, " Adam smiled and looked back at The Four Horsemen. "we can make some use out of these guys.
Cinder sighed folded her arms. "You and Ahriman endorsed these guys. It better be worth it."
"It'll be more than worth it if they managed to take Wyvern out. After that, then it's back to business with the fools in Beacon."
"Whatever you're up to in Beacon, I'm game." Cinder smirked.
Above one of the buildings near the alleyway, the eyes of Ammit and his three companions watched carefully at the group as they walked the opposite direction away from them. Ammit chuckled as he kept his eye on Adam's confidence, shaking his head at the fact he was too cocky and naïve to acknowledge taking down Wyvern isn't going to be easy for him. Same goes for Cinder and her two friends. He may have gotten a great deal with them, but there's still a way to exploit it. And he intends on using the White Fang's perks for his own gains while assisting them.
Asag rolled his eyes about Cinder's plan earlier, doubting it wouldn't work out as intended. "That Roman guy is doomed. How is he supposed to even reach Wyvern? Not to mention, even face him."
"That's the plan." Vapula grinned excitingly. "Roman and his men die, then me and Ammit get our share of the meal."
"Thank you for reminding me of my excitement, Vap. But patience is an important virtue. Don't let the excitement go to your head and think it would make our favor much easier." Ammit added, knowing to not jump into conclusions. "Such an eyesore as it is, Beacon Academy is potentially one of the places where Wyvern could be kept. But it doesn't mean its proven to be true, in my case. All we can do is wait for more information to pop up."
"Right now, are main concerns are with these puppets." Basilisk looked down at Adam and Cinder's group. "How long will those four last?" Basilisk asked while openly displaying an evil smirk.
"Mark my words, it's not going to go too far for those delusional fools. As for us, on the other hand, we simply gained the upper hand, as intended." Ammit answered and chuckled a bit until he saw the four of them disappear. "As of right now, the time has finally come, friends. Today, our own little apocalypse begins now."
