Chapter 4: Bumpy History
Making friends isn't so easy as everyone claimed.
-(Beacon Academy, Wyvern's Private Dorm)-
(Ruby's POV)
This was the sort of trouble none of us wanted to go through. And since this was Wyvern's first day, I could already sense his tension towards getting scolded by our most intimidating instructor in Beacon. Ten grueling minutes of the three of us trying to explain everything and convince her Wyvern was clean and had no dirty intentions. Makes me feel sorry for him, getting him into trouble already. There was no other choice for the three of us, but to listen to her talking while shamefully lowering our heads to try and show we learned our lesson.
Goodwitch, clearly aggravated from the fact that Yang and I were trespassing in the staff's dormitory building and Wyvern's room, she gave me and my sister a sharp glare and seated on a chair to begin speaking to us for answers. "Why are you two here?" She asked with that sharp tone she always had.
Not trusting Yang to speak up after all that unnecessary joking, I looked up at her and tried my best to be as honest as I could. "I just thought it would've been a good idea to meet Wyvern."
"Is spying on him a proper option? Because this situation would've been avoided if you just waited until tomorrow."
My face turned red as I could've just gone with that option from the start. But my curiosity and impatience got the best of me. "I just wanted to get it over with…?" I smiled nervously.
"Ms. Rose," Goodwitch sighed and rubbed her temples, "next time, how about arranging an ordinary meeting with new students instead of spooking them like this."
I lowered my head and nodded my promise to her. "It won't happen again."
"Yang, you too." She added while staring at her.
Yang shrugged her shoulders and chuckled. "I was just following my sister."
"Then I expect you to stop her if she does something like this again. Understand?"
"Yeah, yeah." She agreed and bonked my forehead lightly. "You heard her, cookie brain."
My eyes rolled and looked away in embarrassment. "Whatever."
With Goodwitch reluctantly being convinced from our word, she turned her attention to Wyvern, who was sitting on a stool next to the counter while holding his scroll. It was currently on a line connected with his mom, where she also had to listen to us get scolded by Professor Goodwitch. Although Yang and I got the majority of the lecturing, Wyvern got some sense talked into him too because of Goodwitch being his advisor; having a similar job to a babysitter for a child that isn't hers. Her call was on speaker, which means we were also able to hear what she has to say in this situation. But since she heard that I was spying on Wyvern and followed him up to his room without his consent, this can only mean bad news between his parents and I…
"Glynda, if I may…" His mother spoke.
"Go ahead." Professor Goodwitch listened to what she has to say.
"Let's just get this concern out of the way - I assure you, my son had no intention of committing that sort of activity. You and I both know that my husband and I strictly taught him not to do this sort of thing to girls he just met. Nor does he have the confidence and shamefulness to reach that level."
"Least you're being honest…" Wyvern commented while avoiding eye contact, sheepishly.
"With all due respect, Charlotte, does a woman in your position really think this sort of prank is okay?"
She was just about to giggle, but just tried to cover it up by clearing her throat. "Talking politics and important subjects can be tiring, and at times, annoying. As a mother, sometimes I just want to have some fun with my son when he's growing up. In fact, I honestly did not expect this prank to reach this far to almost get him in trouble. To which, I apologize for that."
Goodwitch eased down from her tension as she corrected her glasses after letting out a long sigh. "I hope you can understand how important this role is. There's no such thing as making mistakes as Wyvern's supervisor."
"Aka: his babysitter." Yang snickered.
"Stop saying it like that!" Wyvern groaned.
"I really appreciate how much you take your job seriously, Glynda. Just remember to give him some breathing room. He can take care of himself, which means you have some time to relax."
"Right. Noted." She nodded her head and stayed silent, collecting her thoughts.
Due to the awkward silence going on for a few seconds, it was now an opportune time to try and speak up towards Wyvern's mom, still on the line of Professor Goodwitch's scroll. All I wanted to do was apologize and make sure she doesn't have a grudge on me, or Yang to save our hides. Plus, Professor Goodwitch most likely wanted us to directly say sorry to her, anyways.
"Miss?" I spoke up to the scroll.
"Hmm?"
"This is Ruby speaking, the one who was first watching your son." I sheepishly looked away after admitting it in front of Goodwitch. "I know you have a lot of questions to why I did this, but…I'm sorry we had to spy on your son like that. Maybe he wouldn't be in this situation if we weren't here."
"May I ask why you've decided to spy on him?"
Before I was about to respond, I stopped myself from mentioning his mental instability, knowing it was rude to bring up. But the fact is that I was spying on him from a distance was so I can keep myself from any risk of danger, as mean as that sounds. "I just wanted to check out on what kind of guy he is. And since he was new here, maybe I could have lent him a hand. You know, first friend of Beacon to help out with homework, and whatever."
My communication with his mom encouraged my sister to step in to the conversation as well. "We didn't mean any harm towards him from the start. Just wanted to meet new people. Not…do what Professor Goodwitch thought we were going to do…"
"Glynda just misunderstood the situation when she saw the box of condoms I placed for a practical joke. Although, I don't endorse stalking on others, at least you were able to apologize and had the heart to try and meet my little boy. Him having friends in Beacon was the one thing I would hope he would achieve. With both your guidance, maybe it'll make things easier for him. And with that, you and your sister are forgiven, in my book."
Yang raised an eyebrow and chuckled. "What? Just like that?"
"Yes. However, be warned. I may take you girls lightly, since you two will be the ones to look after my Wyvern, but I won't be able to save you if Professor Goodwitch discovers any of you doing something rash. Are we at an agreement?"
"Got it." Yang nodded her head and smiled happily, knowing she's automatically forgiven.
"Does…that mean we're okay now?" Wyvern asked while giving a relieved smile.
"I'm still getting you for that." Yang glared at him, still bitter from that tease he probably should've never done.
He flinched from that sudden glare of hostility, which would easily scare off any guy. "I promise I won't do it again…"
"Yang, is it?" Wyvern's mother called, "You have my permission to knock some sense into my boy if he misbehaves."
With that, she gave him an evil smirk as even I felt my blood suddenly turn cold from her excitement of revenge. "Consider it done." She nodded her head while cracking her knuckles.
"One punch will equal one hour of detention." Goodwitch intervened.
"Killjoy." Yang pouted.
Goodwitch looked down at both of us and folded her arms. "Now that this misunderstanding has been resolved, it is time that you two should head back to your dorms."
"Soooo, we're not in deep trouble?" Yang asked curiously to make sure both of us were in the clear.
"Don't shoot us back down, sis…" I begged she wouldn't screw up or joke around at this moment.
"You're fine. Let me make this clear, however." She took out her crop and pointed it at both of us. "I expect you two won't put him into trouble. His attendance in Beacon is mandatory, according to Ozpin, and I'm not going to let him ruin his chance of finishing until graduation. Also, no more stalking. You girls already met up with him directly and it's no longer necessary to keep your distance. If you want to go to his room, make sure you ask for my permission and his consent. Understood?"
And just like that, Yang and I nodded our heads to keep her promise.
"I need your word for it." Goodwitch folded her arms. "Do you promise to follow my rules?"
"We promise."
"And….that's what happened." I chuckled nervously while Weiss and Blake gave me and Yang the most judgmental glares we have seen.
Weiss sighed and leaned her head on her hand. "I knew you two would get in deep trouble for this. Please tell me you didn't involve my name into this, either?"
"I was planning to say it was your idea, but it was too late." Yang joked.
"Wow. A good friend you are…" Weiss rolled her eyes.
"Maybe Weiss was right. Next time, you two shouldn't really do this again." Blake suggested while she was up on her bunk, reading peacefully.
"Oh. You're on her side now?" She pouted at Blake, still glued her eyes to a book she recently brought from the city
"I'm just saying, Yang. If something big is going down with that 'Wyvern' guy and Ozpin and the others don't want any of us in on it, you would, without a doubt, get in some deep trouble where none of us can do anything to save you."
Yang chuckled and raised an eyebrow up at her. "And you didn't stop us both the first time because~…?"
Her cheeks glowed slightly pink and looked away, embarrassed that she was partly responsible. "Perhaps I should've. But I just wanted to make sure he was no threat. Secondly, you're saying that as if it's easy to convince the two of you from stopping."
"She's not wrong." I admitted while looking away, guiltily admitting that I'm rebellious like my sister.
"Okay, look, you both made it back in one piece. I'll give you that. But if it wasn't for Wyvern's mother calling, you two would've been suspended or worse, expelled."
"Expelled for stalking on someone…?"
"This isn't your usual school, Ruby. It's a lot stricter and more important than anything, and the world."
Blake shut her book quietly and looked over at the both of us. "Well, since you and Yang already confronted him, what is he like exactly?"
Weiss tilted her head curiously, wanting an answer badly. "Is he a threat?"
We shook our head to Weiss' question, making the tension on her shoulders ease a little.
"Not even close to a threat." Yang chuckled a bit, but suddenly switched her relaxed aura to bone chillingly vengeful. "But I'm still going to kick his ass for doing that stupid trick on me!"
I busted out laughing when she reminded us of that. "I still can't believe you fell for that."
"I take back my word for calling him cute. This time, he will be 'cute' without the 'e'!" She growled while clenching her right hand to a fist.
"Okay, okay!" Weiss sighed as she didn't have time to listen to Yang's rant for revenge. "What else did you find out about him?"
"And get this," Yang huddled closer as if she was about to say something important, "he's Drahënese."
"Wait, he is?!" Blake perked up from the revelation she was new to hearing.
Weiss' curious expression faded away to a sign of sourness when she heard his nationality. "Oh, great…"
Yang easily noticed Weiss' change of interest and pouted. "What's got into you? Were you expecting better information? Something you can blackmail him with?"
"Stop assuming I'm that cruel. I'm not always a meanspirited girl…" Weiss sighed and folded her arms. "My father isn't fond of the Drahën Empire. A lot of bitter history between Atlas and them has been stuck between us even before I was born. I was raised to hate them, solely because of my paranoid father."
"Wait a minute," Yang sat down on her bed and stared at Weiss surprisingly, not expecting an unstable relationship between the two. "the Drahën Empire and Atlas are enemies? How is the empire even still alive and well, being on bad terms with the most advanced kingdom in the world?"
"First off, another war would make the situation an international problem." Weiss added her family's beliefs of not going far into conflict. "Second, it's not easy. How do we know that the Drahën Empire is, in many ways, so inferior to us as it sounds? We don't know. There's been a lot of rumors going on that the empire is an even bigger threat as we thought."
"Those are rumors though." Blake jumped in by adding that statement. "Just because they're rumors doesn't mean we should believe them so blindly. Overall, what she's saying is that the Drahën Empire is…different; in regards of politics, tradition, religion, and such."
I curiously got interested into what Blake meant about how different they were. And since I lacked the knowledge about the empire, it's best to know more. "Just how 'different' is the empire? Our dad did bring them up briefly, at one point about a small visit, but that was all we heard about them. Not even our schools mentioned anything about the Drahënese. They just act like they never existed."
With that last sentence I just finished, she gave me an answer that just added more questions.
"They don't want to be mentioned too much." Blake told me. "During my time in the White Fang, an official straight out of Doraegon visited each kingdom to negotiate a deal that information of the Drahën Empire was to be kept silent to the public, under some unknown circumstance. Unfortunately, that's all I know. What I'm saying is the Drahën Empire doesn't like getting all the attention. They didn't even get involved in the Great War. After all the treaties between the four kingdoms, not a single word came out of them about it. Another thing is they don't celebrate the anniversary of the end, nor did they follow the name coloration tradition after."
"They don't?" I asked, genuinely shocked.
"The Drahën Empire doesn't really follow the naming of their youth after colors and other patterns. Due to the isolation of Doraegon for the past hundreds of years, they weren't even aware that The Great War since the beginning, while they were at peace. Eighty years ago, there was no exception of the people of Doraegon. Nothing was happening, except for some complications regarding some nomadic group that avoided society. But that was it. The thing is, nothing is known about those nomadic people that have constantly been fighting each other. Even I didn't discover anything else." Blake revealed that she didn't have the answers to everything about Drahënese history.
"They still never decided to take the tradition of naming from coloration?"
Blake shook her head, which was expected from a society that has stayed isolated. "My guess is that they think it's pointless to take in that type of tradition, coming from a war they never took part in."
"But it symbolizes unity."
"And? They weren't a part of the Great War from the beginning, to the end where all four kingdoms declared peace. Where's the unity into that when they didn't want to be involved?"
Knowing she had a point, I decided to stay silent and nod my head to counter that argument. "Other traditions will always remain different, I suppose."
"You sure have done your homework with the Drahën Empire." Yang chuckled, impressed to have a smart team member as a part of us. "How do you know so much?"
Blake shut her book quietly and sheepishly looked away. "You girls already know I'm a faunus myself. However, like Weiss, there has been bad history regarding radical faunus movements in the Drahën Empire. Specifically, before I was born."
"Go on." I told her as Yang and Weiss listened closely.
"Many years ago, when my parents were radical in their ideals of faunus rule, there was a war between their division of the White Fang, and the Drahën Empire. Well, they didn't really name themselves the Drahën Empire yet, during this time. And I assure you, all the other kingdoms were never aware of this war, except for the two of us." Blake explained a brief description of her family history with them. "Of course, as you would expect, the White Fang ultimately failed on taking control of some parts of Doraegon. Four thousand of my kind died in just eleven days, while they only suffered around one thousand. It's horrifying to think about, without knowing thousands are dying while my mom was still holding me inside her."
Weiss curiously looked at the map of Remnant she posted on the wall, staring at the mainland of the Drahën Empire. "Where was this all happening?"
"Solace." She answered while pointing at the lowest tip of the Doraegon continent. "Famously well-known for its port, it's had a bloody history between my family, and the top rulers of the Drahën Empire. All from the War on Solace, also known as The Eleven Days War."
"How is your parents and the empire now?"
"Our relationship has got healthier after all that's happened. It's more of a helping hand sort of thing. My family gives some exotic Menagerie exclusive resources while the empire gives us protection in return. However, due to this alliance, the White Fang has been growing aggravated by my family befriending our old enemies. Not to mention some faunus there are slightly Pro-Drahënese. The treaty between the Belladonna Family and the empire may have been all well and good, but this further divided Menagerie."
"You used to be an agent of the White Fang." I remembered her mentioning her involvement in the organization before Beacon. So, she most likely did have some involvements with anti-Drahënese operations. "You hated the Drahën Empire during those days, I assume?"
As much as it was a tough subject for Blake to get into, she nodded her head and huffed. "I'm not proud of what I've done in the past. But, clearly, I despised them for all they have done in The Eleven Days War, and how they handle White Fang prisoners."
"You don't still hate them, do you?" I asked, hoping she doesn't, due to Wyvern being Drahënese.
"I don't know." She responded in an undetermined manner to avoid jumping into conclusions. "I've never been to the mainland, because of my ex stating that place to be very dangerous for me to step into."
My eyes curiously darted to Weiss as she looked back at me with a suspicious expression. "Have you been to Dor-dao-don?"
"Doraegon." Weiss corrected my pronunciation. "To answer your question, no. Will I in the near future? Never. If I set foot on their soil, expect me to be treated with hostility instead of the proper hospitality."
"Oh, right. They don't like Atlas."
"That," Blake stepped in again and gave Weiss a pitiful frown, "and they disdain the Schnee Family, personally. Like I said when we first met, I noted that the disturbing business practices along with the corruption in the Schnee Dust Company, has led the Drahën Empire and its leaders to forbid any Schnee member from visiting their lands. Not even their business-related agreements are accepted."
Yang folded her arms and sat up straight, getting a clear idea on what these two were also trying to say. "So, let me get this straight, because of some bad blood between the Drahën Empire from each of your family's history with them, there's a chance that you two won't be able to get near him that easily?"
Blake and Weiss gave me a nod, which was something I was hoping they wouldn't do. After all that effort and patience I had to go through to befriend Wyvern, their bumpy history made us take two steps back from making the friendship start off cleanly. Me and Yang can easily handle the rest as we never had any encounters in the empire, but I can't say the same for those two. Who knows how Wyvern will react when he discovers that we're friends with a faunus who used to be part of the White Fang, and the heiress of the Schnee Family?
"So much for an easy approach…" Yang sheepishly looked away.
"Well, sorry. We didn't know he was from there. Do you want us to stay out of this then?" Weiss asked.
"Don't be silly. Maybe he might listen to both of you when we're there to vouch for you two." I suggested my idea as Weiss and Blake seemed unconvinced, but are hesitating to decline the idea.
"No offense, but this doesn't seem like a good idea." Blake let out a sigh that was clearly out of nervousness. "But if you really do believe we can make this work, then I'll do my best."
"Me included." Weiss nodded her head determinedly. "But if he doesn't play nice, don't expect me to act so kindly."
My sister chuckled and patted her shoulder hard enough for us to hear the impact. "Don't worry about it. If he starts going too far, his mom said I'm allowed to intervene…with force."
"Yang, you and I both know that you just want revenge for what he did." I rolled my eyes, seeing right through her.
"Yang's focus on getting back at him aside, how exactly do you intend on introducing us?" Weiss asked and folded her arms, giving me a stern glare. "No more spying!"
I blushed hard and huffed loudly. "Okay, relax! Don't worry about it. I already got that covered."
