Chapter 5: Meeting the Team.
It's everyone's time now!
-(The Next Day; Beacon Academy, Cafeteria)-
(Ruby's POV)
With my team and I getting our trays of breakfast, we headed towards an open seated table in the already near empty cafeteria. Across from us was Wyvern, eating alone but was actually enjoying himself a bit, making me wonder if we really shouldn't approach him yet, since it would feel like we were bothering him. While Yang was stuffing her face with the meal just like Blake, since today's breakfast was a tuna and tomato omelette, Weiss and I studied Wyvern from a great distance while determining if now would be a good time to talk to him. However, we silently agreed to try and finish most of our meal before proceeding. The energy we will consume from our breakfast will be used to try and greet him while keeping things steady for Blake and Weiss.
I finished half of my meal and waited while Weiss ate slowly, compared to all of us. All Yang, Blake, and I could do was wait until she was ready.
After a long period of silence, Weiss finally stopped and started off by dropping a question directed towards me.
"So, what's your plan?" She asked.
My body suddenly froze as soon as she asked me that question. With that, awkwardly, my eyes looked away as I began to whistle a tune to try and hide the troubling truth. I actually never had a plan to begin with. I completely forgot about the preparations of making one!
Weiss was now giving me a suspicious glare, noticing I didn't answer her question for a while now. "Ruby…? Well?"
Finally, Blake let out a sigh and facepalmed herself, clearly reading me like a book. "There was no plan whatsoever, is there?"
"You gave us false hope this whole time?!" Weiss groaned as she was clearly aggravated, which was expected from her.
"I was just trying to make you two feel comfortable!"
"We would be, IF YOU HAD A PLAN!"
Yang chuckled and rolled her eyes by how overly dramatic this conversation was going. "Calm down for a second, girls. Why not just approach him the traditional way? Weiss, there is a chance he'll be comfortable around you if you act nice. Blake, I'm sure he doesn't know who you are, if you don't mention your last name or the White Fang."
"Why don't you approach him first then, if you think it's that easy?" Weiss suggested, not convinced she should go alone.
"Am I allowed to punch him?"
"NO!" All three of us shouted at her for saying that.
My sister let out an annoyed groan and gulped down her whole glass of orange juice. "Then I'm not going first!"
"Did that really get to you? He said he was sorry." I rolled my eyes, knowing my sister holds grudges against others easily.
The blaze of anger in her eyes was obvious. "Ohohoho~! He'll feel sorry when I shove this fist of his-"
"Uhhhh…girls? Everything okay over here?" A voice asked from behind us.
I turned around and was welcomed by Team JNPR, consisted of four members with their leader: Jaune. The gang was all here as Pyrrha, Nora, and Ren had their trays filled with their food while heading to the open seats right next to us. Since they didn't know what are plan was, now would be a good time to explain that me and my team was about to move our seats with Wyvern.
I gave my welcoming smile to the four of them before they seated. "Good morning, guys. Great timing."
"Great timing? Wait, you don't intend on causing another food fight, do you?" Pyrrha bit her lip as she stared down at her meal, clearly famished.
"What? No!" I shook my head and let out a chuckle from remembering that. "We were just planning on doing something and were about to ask if you wanted to join in."
"Judging by your sister's state of aggression, does it involve violence?"
Jaune groaned and leaned his head on his hand. "Can we please have breakfast in peace?"
"No. We're not about to rumble with someone else. I'll try to restrain her, if I have too." I narrowed my eyes at Yang, already chatting with Nora about her need to cause violence upon someone.
"Alrighty then! Who pissed you off?" Nora snickered as she looked around the half-empty cafeteria. "Need some help? Let me go for the legs! It's my favorite spot to hit, so they won't run away!"
Yang pointed at Wyvern across the cafeteria, minding his own business while enjoying his breakfast, alone. It was a bit of a depressing sight because he was new here and the other students didn't seem welcoming enough to go up to him. Usually, a new student that arrived in the middle of the school year seemed strange, which would have got others curious about his delay of attendance. One thing that was at least heartwarming was he seemed happy and peaceful to cherish his meal.
"The new kid? He's the one?" Her evil grin faded away, soon turning into a frown of remorse. "I was expecting Cardin or that jerk who stole your breakfast ticket last week."
"That was your fault. Remember? You basically stole it from her." Ren stated, remembering how grumpy Yang was without eating breakfast.
"I'm not me when I'm hungry, okay?" Nora pouted and folded her arms like a child. She looked back at Yang and went back to a more serious mood. "That aside, are you seriously not liking that guy when he just got here?"
She nodded and huffed, allowing her red eyes to fade back to normal lilac. "Let's just say he played a prank on me, and I don't play even."
"Care to tell us what he did exactly?"
"No." She declined immediately out of embarrassment.
"Your face isn't exactly good at hiding how embarrassing it was." Nora snickered and shrugged her shoulders. "Anyway~, don't you think you should cut the guy some slack? I mean, if he stated it as a joke and he learned his lesson, then everything is okay, right?"
"We'll see. He's gonna have to prove to me that he will never mess around with me like that again." Yang rolled her eyes and glared at Wyvern, unknowingly noticing her.
"All that considered, maybe we should come along with the four of you too." Jaune declared as he was starting to eat his meal. "The more students that befriend him, the more he'll feel comfortable, knowing we'll help him out to fit in."
Noticing his confidence, Pyrrha giggled and playfully nudged his arm. "Things are starting to get easier for you, right?"
Jaune blushed and gave a cheeky grin, proud for his fellow team member noticing. "All thanks to you, Nora, and Ren."
I cleared my throat loudly and pouted at him, hinting he was forgetting something.
"You already know you helped me too." He laughed.
"Thank you for the mention." I winked and let out a chuckle afterwards. "Did you want to finish your meal first before we head up to him?"
He shook his head and carried his tray back up to his chest. "We can eat while we're seated next to him." Jaune said and looked over at Weiss and Blake, who were already done with their trays. "Well…with the exception of those two."
While Weiss was acting pretty pessimistic about the outcome of meeting Wyvern, Blake was clearly growing more nervous, which I can understand why, due to their backgrounds with the Drahën Empire, where Wyvern is from. I'll admit, there was a bit of hesitation to introducing them to him. I didn't want to pressure my team too much as it made me feel like I was pushing them out of their comfort zone. But as Hunters, we need to get pushed off that, every once and a while. It's for the best that I try to make them feel comfortable around Wyvern. Because if we want him to feel more secured, then he needs more friends to look up to here in Beacon.
After giving them some time, I got off my seat with my breakfast tray in my hands and headed off to Wyvern's table. Yang followed immediately as Weiss and Blake were the last ones of my team to get up before Jaune and his team came. Now, the cafeteria was much more spacious, with less students than there was a few minutes ago, it was now a perfect moment to chat with Wyvern without having trouble with the constant chatter of other tables.
I displayed my best energetic smile and greeted Wyvern with all my power. "Good morning, Wyvern."
"Hello again, Ruby." He bowed his head and turned to Yang with a friendly smile. "Yang."
"Good morning, meat." She called him, but corrected herself by calling him by his real name after I nudged her side. Still, that bitter glare makes me know she wants to knock his teeth off that smile.
Wyvern's warm smile faded into a wry, awkward one as he didn't want to piss of my sister in any way. "My seat is open for you girls. So, help yourself."
"Do you mind if we let our friends sit here too?" I asked politely before allowing the others to sit down.
"By all means, go ahead. It's not like I'm hogging this table all to myself." He chuckled and gave the others a warm smile too. "I'm not one who always needs company, but it was starting to get lonely here."
Perfect! This was a good time to introduce the others. To start off safe, I decided to let Jaune and his team introduce themselves while Blake and Weiss had time to rehearse what they wanted to say. Before I could ask if they were comfortable going first, Nora didn't hesitate to be the first member of Team JNPR to introduce herself to the new student. This wasn't a surprise because of her optimism and outgoing personality, which was easy for her to speak out, loudly.
She grabbed his hand, then began to shake it with a large amount of strength, making Wyvern's body move along with the table a bit. "Hello, new kid~! I'm Nora Valkyrie; the "N" in Team JNPR, if you didn't know that already."
"I'm Wyvern. Nice to…meet…you…" He forced a smile back to hide the pain of her crushing his hand and shaking his arm, which would probably dislocate his shoulder if it went on longer.
Knowing Wyvern needed some help, Ren stepped in to have Nora slow down and stop shaking his hand, and his arm. He took his hand and shook it this time, clearly more relaxed and gentler compared to Nora's swings. "Sorry about that. She loves meeting new people." He noted and gave a small smile. "Call me Ren. It's my surname, but I prefer others to call me that."
"Nora and Ren. A pleasure." Wyvern bowed his head to them after respectfully shaking their hands.
"As you can see, Nora is the epitome of sugar rush and bear strength. A deadly combination, but she's still a nice girl." Ren gave a heads up to him, to which Nora snickered from his comment.
"Clearly." Wyvern nodded and let out a short chuckle. "Similar to one of my old friends back when I was a kid."
"Oh? You had other friends before?"
"Nora…" Ren narrowed his eyes at her, pointing out how rude that sounded.
"Of course, I didn't mean it in that way!" She gave a dry smile, realizing it too. "So, how are you two going? Probably reaching the next level~?"
He shook his head and gave a small smile, somewhat heartbroken. "Nah. We had to move on. Hell, she was already taken."
Nora frowned and folded her arms, slowly forming a pouting face. "It sucks growing up."
"No argument here." Ren admitted and shrugged. "Me and Nora had that happen once. Except he just left without saying "Goodbye"."
Wyvern glanced over to the two others behind them and smiled more widely. "Look on the bright side, at least you have some new ones. Like…Pyrrha Nikos?!" Wyvern was completely surprised to see her up close. "I did not expect you to be here!"
"So much for formal introductions." Pyrrha shrugged her shoulders, but still went over to shake his hand. "Nice to meet you, Wyvern. As for my attendance here, I was curious to know more about the Hunter program, due to its famous reputation of becoming the most elite fighters in the world. But, knowing that would mean I would have to leave home to gain that opportunity, I decided to risk it. I am determined to continue my education here."
"Interesting. I'm here for some training as well. However, I'm not exactly sure what it is, due to my Master being vague about the reason…"
Before I could ask about his training and master, Pyrrha spoke up first, making me decide to wait for my turn.
"Well, I hope you'll succeed like the rest of us." She said, bursting with optimism to try and make everyone in our table comfortable. "I'm curious, what exactly do you know about me?"
"Are you kidding? One of the most idolized warriors in all of Remnant, and yet you're going to Beacon." Wyvern bowed his head lightly as a sign of respect. "Oh, and I also know you because of a cereal box." He added, sheepishly admitting it as if he thought it was stupid.
She just gave a wide smile and chuckled a bit, knowing he would also have recognized her with a predictable reason. "Indeed I am. Again, it's a bit odd that they put me in front of an unhealthy cereal brand when I'm more of an athletic inspiration to others."
With that revelation, he froze from eating a spoonful of his cereal, which coincidentally, was Pumpkin Petes. "It's bad for you….?"
"Twenty-three grams of sugar per serving." Ren stated the excessive sugar amount, shuttering a bit from it. "That's a bit too much, don't you think?"
"Pfft. Don't listen to them." Nora laughed as she was still holding her bowl.
"Unbelievable. And I bought twelve boxes of those bad boys in my room." Wyvern sighed, clearly disappointment that he purchased many boxes of diabetic consequences.
"Twelve boxes…? Are you serious…?" Weiss shuttered.
"It's the only cereal that wakes me up as if I drank three cups of coffee, or ate four dark chocolate bars." He blushed and looked at the bowl. "Guess that amount of sugar explains why it wakes me up so well…"
"But, seriously. Twelve. Boxes."
"Might as well give you the title as "cereal killer", riiight?" Yang gave an amused grin to herself while nobody else returned it.
"That was so predictable." Wyvern mumbled, as I gave a small nod in agreement.
She pouted and folded her arms childishly, disappointed we didn't root for her joke. "Always leaving me hanging, don't you guys?"
Wyvern looked away and gave her a small smirk. "I thought you were going to say "YANGing", to be honest."
"Don't give her any ideas…" I groaned quietly while shaking my head. "She's already made dumber ones."
He chuckled and went back to focusing on Team JNPR, with Jaune being the one to make the last introduction. "And you are…?"
"Jaune Arc. Team leader of these three." Jaune greeted him last by attempting to do a head bow like Wyvern, which did make him chuckle at it. "I know I seem like nothing special, or lack the "Team Leader" material, but I am an…uhhhhh…" Jaune went silent for a bit, then sighed, as if he immediately gave up on trying to make himself look good. "I'll just put my cards on the table. I have no idea why I was chosen as the leader. I even asked Professor Ozpin if there was an error on this proposal. He said there was no error whatsoever. Then, I asked Professor Goodwitch and…she just glared at me. How am I supposed to talk to her if she's always looking at you as if she's gonna beat you with the crop?!"
"Hate to break it to you, but I think that's just her usual face." Wyvern said.
"Thank you for the comment, Mister Kumawaka."
Upon hearing that voice, Wyvern jolted up and froze where he sat. In the corner of my eye, Professor Goodwitch was just right around the northern entrance, holding a bottle of orange juice. She approached him while remaining silent, which further made him tense, thinking he'll get scolded for that comment. Instead, she gave him the bottle and sighed. "Drink it. You will not excuse classes with a sick day this early on."
"But…he already finished his, which came with breakfast." Jaune told her.
Professor Goodwitch ignored Jaune's notice and placed it in front of Wyvern in a forceful manner before he could insist. She gave us a short glance, then looked back at Wyvern, almost cautiously. "Is Ms. Rose and Mr. Arc bothering you?"
"No. I'm okay." He stated, feeling embarrassed for her jumping in like this. "I'll finish this. Don't worry." He opened the cap from the bottle.
With that, she turned her back and began to walk out the same door she entered. Something was telling me that she was acting strange when she arrived here to check on Wyvern. Given the fact there was more people besides me and Yang talking to Wyvern, it probably made Goodwitch start to grow a bit uneasy as if the others would cause trouble to him. As much as I wanted to state that they had no intention like that, she probably wouldn't easily take in my promise. That, and she probably wanted to just drop off the juice bottle without conversation and delay under some tight schedule.
Wyvern looked down at the bottle, then back up at Jaune. "She's not really that bad. But…yeah. She is pretty scary."
Jaune suspiciously raised an eyebrow at him. "Professor Goodwitch may be highly strict and responsible towards her work, but I have never seen her that excessive towards other students."
"Well, she does watch over our safety when we are out on the field." I stated.
"Yeah, but not to the point where she would have concerns for our health like what we just saw."
Yang chuckled and leaned against the table, moving closer to Wyvern to give off a teasing smirk. "Are you gonna tell them?"
"Tell us what?" Nora asked, but suddenly froze and widened her eyes, staring directly at Wyvern with such a grim expression. "Hold up, are you romantically involved with Professor Goodwitch…?"
"…" Wyvern's expression went from worrying, to utterly disturbed when Nora took a guess so extreme like that. "May I remind you that I'm still a minor? She would be arrested for that."
"So, you're keeping it secret?"
"I'm NOT dating her. Do you really think I would do something like that?"
Nora's expression turned even more grim, almost similar to a thousand-yard stare. It was clear she was just messing with him, but he didn't see it.
Wyvern shivered as he felt uneasy from that stare. "What's with that face?! Quit it!"
She stopped playing around by laughing out loud after getting Wyvern so worried like that. "But, seriously, is there something going on between you two? Not in a romantic way, of course."
"Professor Goodwitch was chosen to be my advisor throughout my entire time in Beacon, until graduation. It's a bit of a long story how it came down to this, but…let's just say Ozpin wanted to play things safe while I'm here."
"Advisor?" Pyrrha tilted her head and leaned on her hand, intrigued to know more of the details. "I hate to pry, but doesn't advisor basically mean-"
"Yup. His babysitter." Yang interrupted with a huge grin on her face.
"STOP CALLING IT LIKE THAT!" Wyvern shouted as he was deeply embarrassed for Yang spilling it like that before he could. "Advisor, is more like it."
"Babysitter~!"
Getting teased like that by my sister was enough to make Wyvern let out a muffled whine after covering his face, and huffing out loudly after. "Okay, sure. Babysitter. I don't care what you have to call it. I'm basically stuck with her until I graduate, and now you'll be calling her that until the whole school knows. Is this the revenge you want to commit towards me?" He blushed wildly while glaring at Yang.
Yang was clearly enjoying this, but still had rules and standards when it came to promises and making sure her friends get comfortable. Wyvern was an exception, as a new student, even though she wants some little revenge on him. "I won't tell anybody. Well, except for everyone at this table~!"
"Everyone at this table gets a pass. Well, the other two in your team is included as well." Wyvern told me, to which I nodded and realized now was the time to introduce them.
"Speaking of those two, Weiss, Blake, go intro…duce…yourselves…" I turned my head behind me, only to see that the two of them were gone. I let out a sigh and thoroughly scanned the entire cafeteria, to no avail of catching them anywhere. With the two of them nowhere in sight, I looked back at the others, hoping they would have a clue. "Where is Weiss and Blake?"
Nora stepped forward to answer my question, giving me a dry smile. "They said they need to use the restroom upstairs. So, I let them."
Pyrrha and Wyvern took what Nora told me and looked up at the ceiling for a few seconds. They looked at each other, then back at her, giving off an expression as if she was crazy. "There is no upstairs." They both told her at the same time.
"…." Nora's eyes slowly started to widen as she looked up as well, realizing it too. "Hehehehe…apparently, you two are correct."
"NORA!" I groaned, wondering how gullible she could be for not realizing this so sooner.
"Sorry! You know how urgent a bathroom break is for girls?!"
"Could you do me a favor and find them, then bring them back here?" I asked back to a more reasonable tone.
Nora bit her lip and gave a nervous smile. "What if they resist?"
"Then drag them over here." Yang answered for me.
"Dead or alive?"
"Alive, obviously!" I exclaimed.
She let out a small snort and sighed out the rest of her laughter. "Just pulling your leg. I got this." She got off her seat and dashed towards the exit to investigate outside.
After she left, Wyvern just titled his head confusingly and just watched Nora dash around the building through the windows during her search. With no other things to say, I just gave him a dry smile to try and hide the slight embarrassment of getting Weiss and Blake off the hook so easily. Well, it was my fault for not ensuring that they won't avoid the meetup. But I completely understood their reason for avoidance as they didn't want to cause anything.
Noticing my smile, Wyvern slowly smiled back and chuckled almost forcefully. "So…those two didn't want to get involved in this?"
"It's not you. It's…complicated." I replied after shaking my head.
"That almost sounds like it is because of me." He frowned and looked away from my eyes. "I'm stable, if that's what they're worried about."
"No!" I denied his accusation of the two of them avoiding him over his questionable mentality. "Truth be told, they kind of know where you're from: The Drahën Empire. And they told me they have some history with them, based on their background."
Wyvern nervously scratched his head, already knowing where this was going. "Oh. I see." He muttered and cleared his throat. "I'll admit, the Drahën Empire does have some bumpy history between the four kingdoms along with various factions. Our actions have caused some good, but also some bad influence throughout Remnant. Atlas, especially."
"Why them, mostly?"
"I'm not involved in politics." He looked away again as soon as he admitted that, which looked unnatural. "But, as you know, Atlas is acting as if they are the international police force across the world after a deal was passed; Atlas' military might will be the main force to stabilize areas worldwide. This means they would just step in towards occupied territory without granted from the kingdoms, which can cause some heated arguments. Some say Atlas is just pushing their authority to exploit the kingdoms for their resources, while some say it's a necessary act to secure the regions."
Pyrrha nodded her head as she was aware of the deal, but looked at him with a curious expression. "I don't recall the Drahënese accepting that deal."
"Exactly." He nodded. "We never attended the meeting, and it was clear that we declined the deal, which means they can't come close to us. Atlas has attempted countless times to try and waltz into our territory, but was pushed away by the Royal Drahënese Military, stating Atlas was doing this as a sign of aggression. However, discovering the military presence and power of the Empire, which was remained classified internationally, they continued to keep harassing us as if they were examining them."
"So~, it's basically similar to my sister invading my personal space as if she wanted to copy my answers on an assignment." Yang shifted her eyes at me.
He let out a small chuckle and nodded. "I suppose."
Yang rolled her eyes at me and grinned. "Speaking of which, you probably still got the wrong answers because I don't study whatsoever."
"Hey," Wyvern gave her a stern expression, "at least study properly."
"You're not my dad."
"Thankfully…" He huffed under his breath.
"Come again?"
He shook his head and smiled warmly. "Nothing."
Before Yang could speak again towards Wyvern, the door behind him opened so suddenly as Weiss and Blake were seen getting pushed inside with Nora being responsible of the forceful shove. There was no attempt to retreat again as Wyvern made eye contact with both of them. In their case, there was no turning back. The positive side is Wyvern didn't express any negative look, which was a start. But he was rather confused.
Nora waved back at me before pulling their arms to follow her closely. "Found them! Can I have that cookie now?"
My first instinct was to hide that cookie she pointed out on my tray. "I didn't agree with you that you would have it once you found them."
"Fine." She pouted like a little girl and made Blake and Weiss sit down. "Anyway, Wyvern, I'd like you to meet these two beautiful ladies. Choose wisely~!" She said jokingly while making the two of them look up.
"This is not going to end well." Weiss mumbled while avoiding eye contact.
"So…what's the big deal?" Wyvern asked as he was genuinely confused.
Not wanting to make them deal with the pressure any longer, I sat up straight and pointed my finger at Blake first. "I'm sure you know who that is, right?"
"Blake? She's the one that assaulted me in the library." Wyvern answered.
"That's because you were-…never mind." Blake clenched her fists while shyly staring down at the table.
"I was kidding on the assaulting part." Wyvern showed her a smile and bowed his head. "Blake, Daughter of Ghira and Kali from the House of Belladonna. Correct?"
Everyone, including myself, were utterly shocked to hear Wyvern state Blake's status; only having seven of us know about her family and her former affiliation with the White Fang. But not as shocked as Blake herself. As soon as he mentioned her parents name, she remained stiff as if something ugly was about to happen. Instead, Wyvern took out his hand and offered her a handshake.
Blake just sat there, staring at his hand in disbelief as he wasn't acting so hostile towards her in any way. As Wyvern was a Drahënese citizen, her first thought of his reaction was probably either angry or disgusted. Instead, he's offering a formal introduction. She remained staring at his hand with her thought stuck on what to do next because of her shock.
Awkwardly, Wyvern gave a more forceful smile to express his friendliness, clearly knowing about the Belladonnas controversial past with the Drahënese that made him understand her own reaction.
He chuckled lightly and waved his hand a bit. "You do handshakes, right…? Or is that considered rude here? Please tell me it's not…" He muttered the last part nervously.
"What? When are handshakes rude?!" Nora snorted.
"Believe me, there are people out there who think that way." Wyvern replied.
Finally, Blake began to ease down from the stress, but not all the way. She reluctantly shook his hand while staring down at it.
Wyvern sighed in relief as he knew he didn't do something wrong. "Thank God it's okay…"
"Just…" Blake began, "gimme a second." She cleared her throat and continued, "how did you know who I am?"
"I saw your name on that book, remember?"
"Besides that." She avoided eye contact upon remembering that.
Curiously, I was about to ask what exactly happened, but I stopped myself to let them continue their talk.
"The surname rang some bells and I just thought you were maybe related to the Belladonna Family."
Judging by the non-threatening expression Wyvern had, I began to relax, knowing he's fully aware of who Blake was. I couldn't say the same for her, as she was still a little bit stiff.
I cleared my throat and asked, "So, are you okay with Blake?"
"I know there's been a rough history regarding the Drahën Empire. But, take note, this has happened in the past before I was born. I've also heard that Ghira and Kali aren't all that bad now. As long as they haven't continued their commitment of radicalizing the White Fang even further, they're fine. I don't know much about their daughter, but her being here is enough to tell me that maybe she's trying to move on like her parents." Wyvern smiled back warmly.
Hearing his words lifted a great amount of stress off my chest, making me huff loudly. "You have no idea how much I'm relieved to hear you say that."
"You're telling me. My heart jumped when he stated he knew who I was. I was worried for a fight to the death." Blake sat down and leaned forward on the table.
"What kind of criminal do you take me for?!" Wyvern chuckled and leaned back on his seat, comfortably. "Just because of my nationality doesn't mean I'll treat you so coldly. Unlike Atlas, at times…"
"It wouldn't be a surprise if you did that too."
Wyvern stopped chuckling and looked at whoever said that. There was no doubt it was somebody from this table, considering I heard it myself. It came from right next to me.
It was Weiss, resulting my blood to run cold as hers. Everything was going well when Blake was starting to grow more comfortable with Wyvern, along with everyone else. Unfortunately, the last step had to reach at a bad point! The odds made me frustrated, as I was hoping it would've been easier.
He gave a dry smile at Weiss and was literally kicked out of his comfort zone. "I honestly wouldn't. What makes you think that way?"
Weiss, unfortunately, continued to have this conversation. "The Drahën Empire is acting pretty selfish right now, don't you think? At least Atlas has the courage and resources to assist other kingdoms with military aid."
"I'm guessing you're from Atlas, Ms….?"
"Schnee." She folded her arms. "Weiss Schnee."
As soon as Wyvern's expression switched from friendly, to now somewhat sour, this was a problem. A big one. It was also my guess that Wyvern has never seen her face, even with her higher status in Atlas. Knowing how the Drahën Empire disdains Atlas, they probably would've just censored the Schnee Family.
He turned his head at me and sighed a bit. "May I ask why SHE is on your team? In fact, why is she exactly here anyway?"
I cleared my throat and gave a forceful smile. "Weiss is here simply because…well…" My words suddenly drifted away as I literally had no idea why Weiss was sent to Beacon. I just assumed she was sent here to learn to become a Huntress, but that's a more predictable reason that Wyvern might be aware of.
"I am here because the Schnee Dust Company is going to need a strong leader who can handle herself in any given situation. Even in regards of self-defense from lowlife criminals, and Grimm." Weiss answered his question for me.
"You would know "criminals" if you looked at your father."
"My father has accomplished great achievements, compared to you."
"Accomplishments?" Wyvern scoffed, "Yeah. Forcing his way up to your family name and claimed the brand so he can put a tight leash around you." He shook his head, shamelessly giving a comeback. "You're defending a selfish man."
Weiss rolled her eyes. "You calling my father selfish? Take a good look at the Drahën Empire. They don't show any signs of caring about any of the kingdoms, and here you are, trying to defend them, the epitome of selfishness."
Wyvern gripped his glass of orange juice tightly, but not even close to shattering it. He eased his grip and sighed. "You have no idea what goes on in the empire."
She tilted her head and gave a slightly smug smile. "Enlighten me then."
"Oh, no." He glared. "I know what you're trying to do. Trying to get as much information as possible so you can finally please your old man that you got some "valuable" info. My honest opinion, he probably doesn't care if it comes from you. Believe me. He deserves the trouble and hatred from others, after how much he has done. If you follow his example, you'll become the next monster that he already is."
With that, Weiss pounded both her fists down at the table and stood up. She almost looked as if she was going to explode, but repressed it with the help of Blake.
She huffed loudly and continued to give off that deathly glare. "You Drahënese have such a huge attitude that even I can't stand."
"If you can't stand it, then how about sitting down next time?" Wyvern shot another comeback, which clearly offended Weiss even more.
Nora stared in disbelief as she leaned back towards her chair, unable to comprehend how Wyvern talked back at Weiss herself, without hesitating. "That burn is hotter than Yang's style…"
Ren sighed at her comment. "Nora. Not helping."
"All Atlas does is glorify themselves as superior as everyone else. How can everyone not mind them if they would just easily run their mouth much more frequently than them pulling a trigger to kill some evildoer?" Wyvern folded his arms, "Oh~! I'm a leading officer of an Atlas battalion. So, give me all your praise and submit to me so you can kiss my ass, like how I kissed my superiors' asses!" He mocked. "Oh, and that really happened. Some short-tempered woman in Argus basically sounded like that. Not to mention, I literally meant "short"."
Pyrrha looked away and mumbled, "I hated that woman…"
Enough was enough. I attempted to try and prevent the argument from going on any further.
"Can we please, please, puh-lease~ relax for a moment?" I asked and looked at Wyvern with a gentler expression to ease him from all the tension, which did work. "Please tell me you two aren't gonna fight like this…"
"Alright. I'm…sorry." He sighed guiltily, realizing that he went a bit overboard with his attitude. "So, this is why she was avoiding me? Knowing that I'm Drahënese and knew for sure things would get heated?'
Yang and I nodded at the same time, with Blake doing the same too after.
Weiss shook her head and glared back at him. "All I'm saying is that the Drahën Empire's involvement would've saved a lot of lives if they decided not sit on their butts all day. Atlas has spilled enough blood to try and counter terrorism from those White Fang freaks, along with the fight against Grimm. The Schnee Dust Company has been supplying the military for years because General Ironwood wants to help. And what does your precious empire do? Nothing."
"We had our own problems!" He said defensively.
"I don't care." She stated to him, coldly (pun intended), "Their isolation has given the impression of many people in Remnant that you and the empire don't care about others. Vale, Vacuo, Mistral, and Atlas have been watching over each other's backs after the Great War. The empire hasn't done anything, and there's nothing else they can do to bring back those who have died. You see how much I care? A native from Atlas? Unlike you? Other students here finding out you are Drahënese probably thinks you're an outcast that doesn't want to be involved in anything. As if you don't care either, like how the empire treats outsiders."
Wyvern continued to listen, but started to space out while staring at his hands, clearly shaking.
"If you had friends outside the empire, would you have left them too? If they were in dire need for help? Trying to find someone to support them?! Move forward?!"
He didn't reply immediately. His expression looked troubling as if he was too deep into a thought. "I…" He gulped nervously, troubled by something.
She stood up and gritted her teeth, angrily, unable to hold back her emotions. "I remember befriending someone who was Drahënese when I was a little, before all the tensions were at its peak. All the times I spent with him, and cherished, and he just left me without any rhyme or reason! My father always scolded and gloat that he was right about the Drahënese being a bunch of snakes, in attempt to shame me!" She pounded her fist on the table close to Wyvern. "And I wouldn't be surprised if you did the same. I would never want a friend like you, if you did it. Only a MONSTER would straight up abandon their friends like that!"
…
Silence. Nothing but pure silence filled the place, due to the cafeteria only containing all nine of us now. The sound of Wyvern's spoon dropping on his cereal and his ceramic bowl echoed across. His expression turned from bitter, to empty. It was unreadable to understand his emotions when Weiss said that. He gulped, clearly not his food. After ten seconds of awkward silence, he slowly stood up, giving off this unnatural, unseen aura. It was clear he didn't want to be there any longer after that.
Weiss just stood there, still unfazed while glaring at Wyvern and not caring if those words hit him. The one thing I was praying at this moment was a fight not breaking out. We got this far into trying to talk to him, and now, it was in a complicated stage where I probably won't be able to fix easily.
With no other words to say, Wyvern stood up and left his half-finished breakfast on the table while quietly walking outside.
Looking back at Weiss, she began to ease herself while no longer displaying the rage within her. After realizing her words possibly punched him hard enough, there was a small hint of remorse for making things more personal. Not to mention after he apologized. But she was still aggravated for how easily triggered he was towards Atlas being brought up.
"Wow." Yang said after a whistle and shifted her eyes at her. "I think he's pissed about what you said to him." She stated the obvious.
"Of course. I'm much more pissed than he is, however." Weiss rolled her eyes. "Don't tell me you're starting to feel bad for that guy, are you?"
"If it was something personal, then, kind of. But you made the chances of the team getting along with him much worse."
"Says the girl that physically harmed him first, and plans to add more."
Yang shifted her eyes away and sighed. "Point taken."
Blake sighed and gave Weiss and Yang a stern glare. "If you two are planning to salt the wound even further, you're going to make things harder for him, and all of us. Knock it off."
"Blake's right." I leaned against the table and was feeling the stress kick in. "What am I supposed to say to him now…?"
Feeling worse, Weiss sat down and rubbed her temples to ease herself even more. "Okay, how about you go to him and tell him I'm sorry for losing my temper too."
Jaune gave a questioning frown to her. "Don't you think YOU should take the honor of doing that?"
"Unless you want another fight to happen." She reminded that Wyvern might not be in the best mood to speak to her.
A small period of silence ensued around the table as I awkwardly stood up and glanced at Blake. "How about you and I pay him a visit? Just to make sure everything is okay."
"That sounds like a good idea right about now…" Blake reluctantly agreed before getting up.
"You're already doing a lot just so we can be friends with that guy." Weiss sighed. "Sorry, if I ruined it."
"I'm sure Wyvern would understand. He even realized he went too far as well." I gave a light smile to ensure I didn't point the finger directly at her, and to encourage her that Wyvern will hopefully understand.
"What about me?" Yang asked as she wanted to accompany us.
Upon hearing that request, I gave her a teasing grin while shrugging my eyebrows. "Aww~! Does somebody want to see the boy she thought was cute again?"
"Yeah. I wanna see him…so I can kick his ass." She chuckled, mostly joking about what she said.
Blake rolled her eyes and folded her arms to show it wasn't that funny. "Which is why we're letting you stay here."
"Don't be like that~! It was a joke." She smiled wryly.
I sighed. "Yang, just let us handle this. Go ahead and finish your meal."
"You sure? I can handle myself. It's why I'm good with my hands."
"No." I declared one last time for her to get the message.
"Okay, 'dad'." She said sarcastically.
"That's insulting." I pouted as Blake let out a small chuckle.
With that taken care of, Blake and I headed outside one of the exit doors and began to scan the entire campus in search for Wyvern, hoping he didn't get too far. There a small hint in my head that I should probably leave him alone for a while. But, at the same time, I wanted to at least let him know that Weiss didn't mean to make things too personal for him, and herself. He most likely wanted to give a proper apology, but was unable to because of her ranting while adding personal experiences, which is very uncommon for Weiss to mention so openly. I could only imagine that event she mentioned was very important to who she is now. Poor girl.
"So, we find Wyvern and ensure everything is alright with Weiss now. Might be easy." Blake tried to encourage us both, hoping things won't turn no complicated.
Nonetheless, I still nodded and gave an enthusiastic smile. "That's the spirit! And don't worry, I have a plan this time."
"It really would've helped if you had one to begin with this morning." She reminded.
"Okay! I promise I'll be honest next time." I groaned while leading the way down the pathway.
Now, first off, we find him.
