Chapter 6: Digging Deeper.
Some things that are better off forgotten, or never seen.
-(Inner Campus, Beacon Academy)-
(Ruby's POV)
With Blake and I continuing our search for Wyvern, we finally concluded that he was no longer present at the inner campus. So, we decided to walk out where the pathway to the outer gardens and landing pads were and took a short break by taking a seat on one of the benches. Blake took out a small milk carton she saved from her breakfast and drank it down while still scanning the area for the new student. I, on the other hand, just decided to lay back and relax a little after all the walking. It was the weekends, so all students like my team and myself had nothing better to do rather than enjoy our free time for the rest of the day and tomorrow. Still, it feels like a crime we only have two days off…
"So," Blake started and gave me a playful nudge, "do you have a plan this time on how we're gonna talk to Wyvern?"
I pouted and folded my arms tightly. "You don't have to kick me down even further~!"
Her playful side immediately shifted back to serious mode and gave a small frown. "Jokes aside, that was a pretty heated debate between them."
My eyes narrowed down, staring at the ground. All I did was let out of huff as soon as she mentioned the argument. "I didn't expect Wyvern and Weiss to get that aggressive about it."
"Well, it's expected between the Drahën Empire and Atlas; especially the Schnee Family."
"Maybe this was a bad idea from the start. I was too naïve to believe things would be this easy."
"Don't be like that. I'm sure you can make things better between them if you try to make them more comfortable near each other." She attempted to encourage me. "Perhaps giving them more time can make the difference too."
"Probably. Having different opinions doesn't mean there's no chance of becoming friends."
"Exactly. You know how Weiss and I were when we talked about the Faunus and the White Fang. And look at us now."
Admittingly, her example did add some hope for me to help Wyvern and Weiss start over without the risk of having another argument. Realistically speaking, it's going to start off bumpy, but it will get there. Like the same situation between her and Weiss back then.
"You know, I've been wondering something." Blake suddenly changed the subject.
"What is it?" I asked, willing to listen to her instead of planning immediately.
Blake looked around her surroundings as if she didn't want anyone else to hear what she had to say. As soon as she was convinced the area was clear, she tilted her head towards me to whisper, "Do you think what Weiss said to Wyvern struck something in him?"
So, I wasn't the only one to noticed that too. When Weiss mentioned about her abandonment, Wyvern seemed very stiff and unnaturally uneasy. It then went to a much greater level as soon as she accused him of being that kind of person while calling him a monster. Something about her calling him that was a critical blow for him. He flinched, didn't say anything, and just walked out of the table. Of course, I couldn't do anything because I was in shock as much as everyone else.
To answer her question, I gave a nod. "Maybe it's something more personal."
"Even Weiss didn't know she struck something, hence why she's a little bit guilty for bringing that up."
"It's something we shouldn't pry into." I added, "As long as we never mention that again, Wyvern can start to ease down a bit more. We all have things we want to keep personal."
"Yeah." Blake agreed, somewhat sheepishly.
I snickered and shook my head. "There's a difference between your personal life, and your smutty books."
Bringing that up made Blake's cheeks flare intense red. She looked at me with a mortified expression and asked, "That's not mine!"
"Blake. Rule #1: NEVER write your name on a smut to show it's under your possession."
With no other words to defend herself with, Blake looked away and hung her head in shame. "Damn it! What was I thinking?!…kill me. Death is the only way out…" She muttered shakenly.
I sighed and patted her back to try and cheer her up. "I'm not judging you. It's common for girls to look into that sort of thing like guys."
She shifted her eyes at me and raised an eyebrow. "Do you look at that stuff?"
"Well, no." I blushed and shook my head in response. "It's just that I-…wait a minute. Don't even try to fish anything out of me like that! How could you accuse a pure and sweet girl like me into reading that sort of thing?!"
"It's just like you said, it's normal."
I huffed and cleared my throat to hide my embarrassment. "Okay, okay, okay. Focus. Shouldn't we head back to finding Wyvern?"
Blake tilted her head sideways as if she was attempting to look over my shoulder behind me. "I don't think we have to look far." She said and pointed.
After turning over my head to where she pointed, there he was. Wyvern wasn't facing our direction as he was paying attention to the pathway. Before Blake and I were thinking of running up to him, we realized he was on scroll/phone talking to somebody on the line. I assumed it was his mother calling again. So, I got off the bench and told Blake to get ready until he was done talking.
Reaching Wyvern a little bit more closely behind his back, my assumption of him contacting his mom was immediately thrown out the window. He seemed to have a much sterner tone to the caller as he was having a conversation about something you usually wouldn't talk about with your mom. I could make out what he said from mentioning the White Fang, the ensuing development of the Vale Military's strength, and mentioning something about the casualties. Rising at a dangerous rate, that is. Because of that, Blake started to show a small hint of nervousness because of the fact that the White Fang was involved, and that Wyvern was giving an intense yet subtle reaction upon hear that. Not to mention Blake never noted that she was involved with the movement no more than a year ago.
"If the White Fang gets in the way of our plan, just deal with them however you see fit. Hell, you don't need my permission on who to kill. We've all been doing that for years, especially towards them."
Upon hearing Wyvern say that, something felt wrong about it. It was as if he showed a hint of sadism about killing. Not to mention that he added the fact "He" along with some others have been doing it with experience. This was something that would usually come from a person that has killed countless people, and enjoy it. Seeing Wyvern like that shatters my perception of him being that friendly new student, but I calmed myself down, thinking I was speculating a bit too far.
Instead of exposing ourselves in the open behind him, me and Blake hid ourselves behind one of the bushes next to the pathway.
"I heard from the boys that you got a prisoner from that raid. How is she?"
…(Inaudible response from scroll/phone)…
"Find out what she knows. I know how you do your work, so go on ahead and have your way."
Blake tensed up a bit, clenching her fist a bit tightly as soon as she heard that part. "Something's not right." She whispered.
I nodded, with her and I both having the same conclusion. However, I still took things with a grain of salt and continued to listen to the conversation. Who's to say which kind of prisoner is she? She could be a bad apple, but there's a chance she isn't. If the latter was the case, this almost sounds like criminal activity. Or possibly mercenary work.
…(Inaudible response from scroll/phone)…
"Hey, be glad they will be compensating you with your service. Lots of money for you to swim in." He chuckled.
I spoke too soon. That line itself sounds like what a mercenary would say.
…(Inaudible response from scroll/phone)…
"Well, what about them?" He asked while turning his head a bit.
They must be referring me, my friends, or Ozpin and the others as "them" if he looked at the same direction of Beacon.
…(Inaudible response from scroll/phone)…
"They don't know much, which is a good thing. Might make things run a little bit easier for you and me."
…(Inaudible response from scroll/phone)…
"Pfft. Gimme a break. I probably killed more than you have in your career." Wyvern chuckled and smiled a bit cockishly.
My heart sank upon hearing that. Could he be referring that he has killed students or huntsman too?! No. This has got to be a mistake.
…(Inaudible response from scroll/phone)…
"Again. I think cutting them up with my weapons are much easier now after I modified and sharpened them, prior to Master Ostanes' departure."
Blake and I looked at each other, clearly horrified and had the gut feeling to get away from Wyvern. Quietly, we dashed back inside the inner campus and reached the entrance to the staff building. Catching my breath and looking back at Blake, she was blankly staring at the ground in a deep-thinking state. Honestly, after easily getting along with Wyvern and hearing that from him, it seemed like Wyvern's friendliness was just a mask for him to easily exploit by getting closer to others.
"Blake."
"What kind of person is he supposed to be…?" She mumbled.
I let out a sighed and patted her shoulder. "Look, maybe we're just overthinking about it."
"And if that is not the case?"
"Then…we have a problem."
"We should probably tell Ozpin or Professor Goodwitch about this."
I shook my head. "I doubt they'll believe us if we just listened and not have any evidence."
"Well, what're we going to do then? If Wyvern really is planning something, we can all be in danger."
"Just…lemme think for a second." I rubbed my temples to try and brainstorm any ideas.
It was an agonizingly long five minutes as I was completely stumped from thinking any ideas. Something in me was saying that Wyvern was a danger to all of us, but there was another screaming that he isn't. How can a nice guy like him have the stomach to kill others who try to befriend him? Maybe I just didn't get to know him that much so far, but…it doesn't seem like him.
Miraculously, Blake looked down at me as if she had an idea. "He mentioned the White Fang, remember?"
"Well, yeah. But where does that lead us to?"
"Considering he has had some encounters with them, there is a small chance, and I mean a VERY small chance that maybe the organization has some information regarding Wyvern and his affiliation. A common tactic almost everybody uses is to learn and understand your enemy. And we most definitely keep that in mind and gather anything we encounter."
I raised an eyebrow and folded my arms, doubtful about her plan as the odds seemed unlikely. But deep inside, I wanted to believe there was a chance. "The odds are probably not that high, but it's worth a shot. How are we supposed to do that? We don't know how to access any White Fang information except for the mainframe tower, which is usually restricted for a majority of students."
She pointed at herself to give me a hint. "You're talking to an ex-White Fang agent that was involved in the most vital operations across Remnant."
"Then…do you remember anything about Wyvern being mentioned during those days?"
"No. However, before my departure from the organization, I managed to collect some intelligence with my flash drive that I was planning to give to my parents. It was to be used to counter any White Fang operations that could save many lives in Menagerie or many other places. I kept it with me all this time because I didn't have time to give it to them after I betrayed the White Fang. Gotta keep a low profile."
My expression brightened up a bit for at least seeing her have a solution. "Where is it now?"
"In our dorm room. It's under my bed, just in case."
I clapped my hands together and smiled. "Blake, you just saved me from having my brain on meltdown and might have a chance to see if Wyvern is really innocent."
"But…"
As soon as I heard her add that, I groaned. "But what?"
"Most of the files aren't deciphered enough to have access to. I looked what was inside, but only had access to outdated intel that was way older than us. Latest files can only be opened by using a very sophisticated device that is able to inject a code to make the protection vulnerable and easily bypassed to have access to."
"And…where are we supposed to find said sophisticated device? Do you have one?"
She rolled her eyes and shook her head. "If I did, I would've never mentioned this problem. I don't have that potential key to solving it, but we know someone who might, considering her ownership of Atlas technology."
"Weiss!"
"What?"
I jumped in surprise as soon as I heard that voice come from behind me. Turning around, there she was, accompanied by Yang and the rest of Team JNPR. Noticing some small droplets of sweat on my forehead, Weiss gave me a questioning look and noticed it on Blake too. "Did something exciting happen?" She asked.
The first thing to come out of my mouth was a nervous chuckle. "Exciting? Well, it's kind of the opposite."
"What about Wyvern? Did you catch up to him?" Jaune asked while looking around the surrounding campus.
Blake and I looked at each other, knowing we had to talk to them about what we heard from Wyvern and his phone call. As sudden as our change of thoughts were on him, it was necessary to tell them in order to avoid a possible endangerment of us and other students. After explaining everything to them, it was the exact reactions we were expecting from each of them. Shocked.
-(Team RWBY's Dorm Room)-
"I told you there was something off about that guy." Weiss sighed as she was going through her personal laptop to set up the program Blake suggested to crack the code of her files.
Jaune was looking out the window, trying to catch a sight of Wyvern. "Didn't have any idea he was like that. Are mercenaries even legal nowadays?"
"Jaune, Huntsman can be mercenaries if they choose to be so. Private military companies exist too." Pyrrha pointed out a statement to answer.
"I think he meant those groups that break the rules of engagement and lack code of honors, while not under the supervision of official military branches or companies." Ren added.
"So, hitmen. Or assassins. I hope that's not the case…"
Nora just sat down and watched Weiss do her work while listening to the conversation. "Does the Drahën Empire have mercenaries within their territory?"
"During my time in the White Fang, there have been reported sightings of PMC involvement within their lands, and even offshore. None of which matched the identifications of other merc groups we came across." Blake explained her side.
"Then we're all in the dark then." I said disappointingly, "If it's from the empire, then our sources are limited and all we are left with is pure speculation."
The clicking sound of Blake's flash drive connecting to Weiss' laptop confirmed that Weiss was just at the beginning stages of finding the answers. All the information we need to see if Wyvern really is a dangerous individual is all in that piece of hardware.
Yang leaned back on her bed and looked at Blake, curiously. "So, how would we know if the White Fang did write something down about him? Just because he encountered them for years doesn't mean they would solely go after him. If he was a mercenary, then they would mostly aim for his employers." She said.
"Because we keep in check on individuals we have ran into many times. This is a method to inform other agents on the ground on who to trust, and who to consider as an enemy. For example: If you were responsible for soiling plans in the past few months against the White Fang, they would try to find out who you are, and have you on their hit list, regardless of who you work for."
"True. Still, we shouldn't keep our expectations too high. Like what you two said, it's just a small chance." She reminded.
Taking her word for it, Blake and I looked down at Weiss, closely watching as the percentage of its progress was slowly racking up by one of each three seconds.
"I gotta ask, why do you have access to this sort of software?" Blake asked curiously.
"Intelligence gathering is one of the main things Atlas does for counter-insurgency. My sister gave this to me in order to collect any information from White Fang devices when I'm out on the field. As soon as I collected them, execute the program, then send the intel to her." Weiss said while initiating the process to decode. "Thankfully, a majority of these have outdated security measures. So, it'll be easy for the program to do its work."
I let out a chuckle and looked at Blake with a small smile. "I'm surprised your prediction of Weiss having this was right on the money."
Weiss smirked and shrugged her shoulders. "Truth be told, I thought it would've been obvious. You know me and my family's position to have these sorts of things."
Ren looked at the process on screen and was utterly puzzled to understand how it works. "How much do you know about hacking and coding?"
"Not a lot. I just let this thing do the work." Weiss shrugged, admitting she lacks the skills in that field.
My sister gave her a small nudge and looked at the screen, with the process still ongoing and the emblem of the Atlas Military Emblem shining gladly on the screen. "So, are you planning to letting your teammates have this thing too?" She asked.
She slowly narrowed her eyes at Yang and raised an eyebrow suspiciously. "What exactly do you need this for?"
"No reason." She replied, clearly acting fishy as I know she's one of the worst liars.
"I'm afraid I'm gonna have to shoot down your hopes of obtaining this. It's not like I can easily install it to your own devices. You need high authorization from the Atlas military to have access to it. Not to mention, my sister is trusted enough by Ironwood to allow me to have it too."
"Then can I-"
"No. You're not using my laptop."
Yang pouted and folded her arms, "Fine. Be that way."
"Look, how about you just be patient for a little while. It's almost done."
"Alrighty. Time to uncover it all." Yang hopped off her bed and gathered around with the rest of us.
"When it opens, I doubt it's going to be everything about Wyvern, if we do come across it. Most likely images and some descriptions."
Relieved that the scan was almost done without any complications, I walked to the small complimentary fridge that was used to each dorm to get a drink. I grabbed the can of raspberry iced tea I brought from the store yesterday and saw there was more unopened varieties waiting to be drank, almost enough for everyone in the dorm.
"While we're waiting, anything you guys want to drink? We have green tea, raspberry tea, strawberry milk, Wyvern's favorite soda, and-…guys?" I turned back around to the group and saw their faces were displayed with shock and disgust, with Weiss and Nora showing more than from the latter. "Guys? Are the files accessible now?"
Weiss was unable to stare at the screen of her laptop any longer and shifted her eyes away from it while the others just kept staring. "Yes."
"And?" I asked while proceeding to walk back to them with the drink in my hand.
"Come see for yourself. It's better than just me explaining about it…"
"What? Why?" I repeated, more worryingly this time.
"PMC or not, this is definitely something the officials would never accept." Weiss turned her laptop to my direction, showing what has everyone freaked out over.
At first, I thought it wasn't going to be something too big for me to handle. However, I was proven wrong. Very wrong.
The first file was a .jpg photo from the official Drahënese Police Force, displaying a gruesome scene you would expect from a mad serial killer. Instead of one, two, or even three bodies, there were SEVEN dead bodies uncovered from their individual body bags. What was off was the fact that these victims were not wearing any White Fang combat uniforms. Rather they were dressed like civilians. Six out of seven of them were violently defiled further past the point of recognition, but their faces…. What I can make out was that they were all contorted in terror as if their last moments were something nobody should witness. The other was rather just "dead", not giving off any expression besides its lifeless face. All died by the same causes, according to the small description layered below stating: "Severe repeated stabbings on the torso and neck on all victims. The weapon used was a standard issue bayonet that is no longer in service; widely used by rogue organizations deemed unofficially represented into the Drahën Empire."
Below the file was a White Fang statement of confirmation that the gruesome attack was committed by Wyvern. A White Fang agent that was present on the ground had reports of him in the area that matched the same descriptions of what he looked like, and was discovered with signs of blood on him. However, the Drahënese themselves never made this statement as if they didn't know it was him.
Blake looked closer at the image and noticed something on the bottom right corner of the picture. I caught a glance of something too where she was looking. A word and some numbers that blended in almost perfectly with the police lights, almost to the point where it was easy to miss.
She let out a quiet gasp, as if she discovered what it was.
Then, my heart dropped as soon as I did too.
It was the date this event happened.
"November 1st, 9196" I stated out loud for everyone to hear.
The date today was August 10th, 9207…
If my calculations are correct, and that Wyvern was seventeen years of age, which is the standard age of students in Beacon, he would be around six or seven years old when this attack happened.
"HE WAS JUST A KID WHEN HE DID THIS?!" Weiss shouted, completely at a loss for words to comprehend this.
"Were they tracking him for that long…?" Blake whispered to herself.
Jaune gulped nervously and shuttered at the thought. "Well, that's telling you something. Why would they have information on Wyvern specifically since childhood? He's also capable of killing others at a young age. Who knows how much he's used to this?"
"What else can you find from that event?"
Weiss shook her head sighed in annoyance. "I'm afraid there is nothing else. Whatever Blake tried to download from that specific date, it wasn't everything. Just a fragment of it."
"I can't believe I called a murdering child cute…" Yang shuttered.
I bit my lip nervously, obviously seeing that everything was going downhill. Everyone, including myself, were starting to think Wyvern really was a problem. The fact he could kill in such a brutal manner was enough to know something was wrong. Maybe we didn't get enough info to see the full story. But, at this point, it didn't seem to matter. The way Wyvern acted earlier and the things he said during the call today further made us too cautious to feel relaxed.
"Here! Another one!" Weiss clicked on the file and patiently waited for it to load. "It's just a picture, but maybe it'll add some insight."
After the file finished loading, we were greeted with a collage of pictures instead of one. It was all photos that were taken in secrecy from a distance. They were all about Wyvern in combat, fighting against anything from humans, faunus, Grimm, and another person that seemed familiar to me.
Three photos in particular had a man that was fighting Wyvern defensively. The man Wyvern was fighting had black hair, a somewhat faded beard, red eyes, fair skin, dressed in grey and black with a huntsman's fashion, and…a scythe. Those traits were enough for me and Yang to react at the same time.
"That's-…!"
"Uncle Qrow…?" I said in disbelief, seeing as if he was struggling to fight off Wyvern.
The first one had Qrow gritting his teeth in pain as he seemed to be roughened up from combat, with Wyvern relentlessly charging towards him, two blades ready, smiling bloodthirstily. For the second one, they were both fighting in what seemed to be Forever Fall Forest, with both of them leaving behind a trail of cut trees and a harshly desecrated landscape as if they have been fighting for a long while. Lastly, the third one was what angered Yang the most. It was Wyvern holding Qrow up by the throat, where we were unable to see our uncle's face due to the position of the photographer being behind him. Judging by Wyvern's cold expression, Uncle Qrow would most definitely be struggling if he was unable to escape that position.
Yang clenched her fists, her eyes igniting to red instead of lilac. "I think that right there is enough for me."
"Yang, please," I intervened her anger from building up.
"Please what?! You saw what Wyvern was doing to Uncle Qrow! It was almost as if he was trying to kill him!" She growled and went to the window. "Where is he?"
Weiss shut her laptop, no longer being able to see more. She went up to my sister and attempted to do the same as I did. "Look, if you want to talk to him, now is the good time before he does something. But first, we need to keep things a little bit subtle first."
"Oh, don't worry. I want him to at least explain himself before I kick his ass."
"IF he's guilty of attempting to kill your uncle." Blake added.
"Blake, I think we've seen enough of what he can do. He even attempted to attack Ruby and Yang's uncle, like what we all saw." Jaune said and turned towards both me and Yang. "Has your uncle done anything…questionable before?"
I shook my head immediately. "Never."
Yang rolled her eyes and gave a small smirk. "Well, besides getting his ass drunk all the time, nothing too major, which is a surprise. We trust Qrow like our dad, and he has always known what was better for us."
"If your uncle is like that, without question, then Wyvern really might be up to something." Nora said, frowning.
Pyrrha looked at the group and sighed. "Should we talk to anyone about this? Professor Ozpin or Goodwitch? Isaac?"
"Ozpin and Goodwitch are probably busy doing their own thing. Isaac usually has a lot of spare time and spends most of it in the library. I'll start off with him." I volunteered to go get supervision.
"Well, you better get to him now. Wyvern has just entered the inner campus." Weiss stated while pointing at the window.
Blake watched him closely, then turned back towards me. "He's heading inside the amphitheater."
"Okay, good. I'll go get Isaac, and the rest of you go to the amphitheater and make him stay there until both of us arrive."
"Got it." Weiss nodded and placed her laptop on her bed before heading to the door. "Well, let's get going then."
As soon as I was the first one out the door, I turned back towards everybody and wanted to give one last favor before we confront Wyvern. It was important enough for me to make sure they all listened clearly, and understood it.
"Before we begin, I just want to declare one thing: Please, don't do anything harsh if he doesn't do anything. If the conversation kicks in early, let him talk first, then you can state your opinion without any form of violence, unless you have to." I told them, with the last part being unlikely…I hope. The last thing I want is for Wyvern to get hurt if he is SOMEHOW innocent or has a valid reason for all this.
(Third-Person View)
Alone in the amphitheater, Wyvern was practicing his combat stances and sword techniques. Although he could've chosen a better place to practice his skills, he chose the amphitheater due to the lack of students going inside, and not worrying about accidentally causing any "problems". Mainly, it was just the matter of focusing in silence for better concentration. His sword swings and body movement were swift and sharp, showing off his clearly enhanced dexterity after some meditation during his rest in the silence. All the knowledge he remembered from his Master before his passing was slightly bittersweet. As much as he mainly focused on his teachings by itself, he couldn't help but remember the moments where he cherished his time spending with him. Where it'd be hunting or traveling around with him, there was always something to learn. But it was hard to ignore the fact that's how he became close to his Master.
With a few minutes of repeating the same pattern and movements for both his swords and body, Wyvern decided to take a break and took a seat on the ledge of the stage. Although he would really go for his favorite soft drink in the vending machine outside, he knew his important fluid intake was inside his hydro flask, containing a specific water brand that contains electrolytes. Consuming a soda that contains high amounts of sugar after all the enduring practice wouldn't be good for him, overall. Taking that in mind, he decided not to get soda for the first few hours until he was appropriately hydrated.
During his break, the main central door to the amphitheater opened while he was in the middle of gulping down some water, unable to see who it was. Before he could check to see for himself, a voice called out his name loud enough for him to recognize who it was from.
"Wyvern." Yang called and stepped forward towards him.
"Oh! Hey there, Yang!" Wyvern put his weapons away and noticed she wasn't alone as soon as he turned his head all the way. "The others too…" He bit his lip as soon as he saw Weiss, still nervous if she wasn't in a mood.
Weiss sighed and shook her head. "Just forget about what happened. This isn't about me."
"What? Then why is everyone here? Wait, where's Ruby?" He realized her absence in the last second.
"She'll be here in a moment. As for right now, things are a gonna be a bit serious." Blake said while looking at Yang as if she was the one leading.
Wyvern nervously looked at the others and saw that their expressions were more serious and blank more than hinting they were up to something for laughs. As a result, he let go of the possibilities of a friendly small talk and went for the same tone they were in.
"Okay," he nodded, "what's going on? Did I do something wrong? If you want me to apologize, I'm sorry." He said the last part to Weiss directly, and genuinely.
She shook her head. "I'll forgive you for that, and I'm sorry too. However, again, all of this is not about me."
"Then tell me what's wrong. What's with all those looks?" Wyvern asked innocently, beginning to grow even more uneasy the more they stared back.
(For the dates in this story, I know they use the same names of the 12 Months we use in our calendar, but I'm still unsure of the year number they use. So, I decided to create one from the timeline I created for this story. Anyway, Merry Christmas and hope you all have a good one.)
