****** Mount Weather Compound ******
Cage was pacing the control tower back and forth, still not sure what to do about the new inhabitants of the earth. He thought about telling his father of this new development but Dante's health was fragile and Cage didn't want to cause unnecessary stress to the old man.
Since Emerson had approached him a few days ago to inform him about a dropship landing he hadn't been able to sleep, a little too worried about what it might mean for them in the long run.
The Lieutenant suggested they sent people to investigate but Cage put an immediate stop to it, savages took immense pleasure in capturing and torturing scouts and he didn't want to risk the safety of his people if he could avoid it.
Cage instructed Emerson to redouble their patrol efforts in the perimeter of the bunker and keep alert about any possible intruder but to not engage with them unless provoked, there was no point in alerting the newcomers about their presence.
Emerson sighed in resignation but dutifully comply with the orders he had been given, he understood Cage's reasoning but he just couldn't shake the bad feeling he got when he saw the dropship.
****** Arker Camp ******
When they arrived at their camp Bellamy looked for Mgbe and motioned for him to approach.
"Gather everyone; Clarke and I have an announcement to make"
John started to protest but Bellamy glared at him, effectively stopping whatever he was about to say.
"Just do as I told you"
Mgbe grumbled but left to comply with the request; if he was honest he was terrified of Bellamy.
The delinquents arrived shortly after being summoned and if some of them thought that Clarke and Bellamy calmly standing side by side was an odd sight, they didn't dare to comment on it.
"Bellamy and I agreed that it's in everyone's best interest if we stop fighting among each other, so we call all of you here because we have a proposition to make"
Bellamy discreetly rolled his eyes at Clarke; sometimes she was a bit too diplomatic for his taste.
"We decided to establish a co-leadership system"
When some started to protest Bellamy shut them up instantly "This won't be like the Ark council!"
As soon as they all calm down, Bellamy kept talking "Our decisions won't be absolute; everyone will have the opportunity to complain if they think something is unfair and we want to encourage you to suggest improvements"
Clarke realized some were still wary of their idea so she added "While we will be the visible faces for any negotiations we might need to make in the future, any major decisions will be voted on and approved by the majority"
"So you changed your tune?. Now we listen to the princess?"
No one expected Bellamy's reaction to those words; advancing rapidly he held Myles by his neck and forced the boy to look at him in the eyes.
"Didn't you listen to what I just said?. We are a team now, which means you will respect her. Are we clear?"
The boy struggled to get free but Bellamy held him tighter and repeated himself "I said, are we clear?" Unable to talk, Myles nodded in acceptance.
"Why you two?" It was Jasper this time who questioned them.
"Keep dreaming stoner, no one will ever leave you in charge of anything" Murphy said, making others giggle.
"Very funny Murphy, I just want to know why them"
"He has a valid question"
"Do either of you have any idea how to build a fort or skin an animal?"
"Well, no. I mean that kind of thing didn't matter in the Ark so I just slept through earth-skills class" Nathan Miller said and Jasper simply shook his head.
"That's why Clarke is in charge. Unlike the rest of us, she knows how to adapt to this environment"
"Fine, that's understandable. And you?"
"My job is very simple Nathan; I will make sure everyone stays inline".
Well, all things considered, no one could dispute Bellamy's assessments and so their new government structure was born.
"We have to organize ourselves. I will tell you what needs to be done so you can make groups"
"Each group will select a leader and they will be responsible for the rest of their team, okay?" She said and they nodded.
"We need a group of five to track medicine plants and make alcohol"
Clarke saw Jasper pump up his fist in delight "the alcohol is to disinfect wounds not to drink". Monty laughed at his friend's crestfallen expression.
"We will use the dropship as storage so ten of us will need to make sure we have enough tents for everyone"
"Ten of you will be responsible for our food. Later I will teach some of you how to skin an animal; we will need their fur to make blankets, nights are turning colder and who knows how much the temperature will drop, we need to be prepared"
"A team of twenty will be in charge of our water supply. Wells, can you lead that group?" When the boy nodded she explained her seemingly arbitrary decision to the others "Wells will take the team to an abandoned bunker we found, I saw some empty barrels there that we can use to store water"
"Twenty will be our security team. To those who volunteer to take the night shift, I suggest you go to sleep now, you start at midnight. The other ten will begin tomorrow at midday"
"And the remaining thirty will need to collect wood. We need strong logs for a barricade and small branches for fire"
"Once we have enough wood we will reassign the tasks to start building a barricade and a smokehouse"
"To sum things up; purple is food, green plants and alcohol, blue water, red shelter, yellow wood, and orange is security"
The blonde waited for all the delinquents to assemble in little clusters, making sure no one was left standing alone.
"Excellent. Only Charlotte and I are without a group; we will help whoever needs it the most"
"Lastly the black team made up of Bellamy, Murphy, Octavia, Wells and I will be in charge of the whole camp. If anyone has any problems come to us and we will try to find a solution for it."
Clarke looked at all the delinquents before continuing, "Is everyone okay with this arrangement?"
She waited to see if someone complained and when they didn't she sighed relieved.
"Chaos will not be tolerated anymore!. We were given an extraordinary chance and we will not waste it. Are we clear?" Bellamy's voice resonated all through their camp.
"Yes"
"Louder, I can't hear you!" He shouted again.
"Yes!"
"Excellent, now let's get to work people!"
Clarke realized that thanks to Bellamy's support things were a lot easier this time around. As the only adult present, he carried an effortless aura of respect and his though approach made sure everyone complied without much protest. She might not like his methods but the blonde couldn't deny they were extremely effective.
After Bellamy's parting words people started working together; someone had the genius idea of using belts to carry the heavier logs while others gathered shards of metal to help them cut branches from the fallen trees.
Mgbe and Connor, who had chosen to be part of the wood collecting team, approached Bellamy.
"So you are her puppet now?"
"Don't be stupid Mgbe. Don't you see how fucked up we are?. This is not the time to fight among each other"
"We could seize control of the camp again, we don't need the princess"
Bellamy rolled his eyes at Connor; he was not the sharpest tool on the shed "Yeah, look how well that worked for us before. We have been here for days and honestly, we have nothing to show for it"
"I don't want to follow her orders"
"Does it look like I give a shit about what you want Connor?.
"Mark my words Bellamy; we will control this camp again"
"Oh yeah? I want to see you try!" Bellamy forcefully pushed him out of the way "Now shut your mouth and get to work, that wood won't collect itself"
Later he would tell Clarke all about the conversation he had with Connor and Mgbe, for now, their idle threats weren't a problem, but they needed to find a way to nip their rebelliousness in the bud. Their joint ruling was still in its infancy, it was fragile and tentative, and they were in no position to afford a mutiny, no matter how small it might be.
Octavia was leading the group in charge of their housing, they needed quite a few tents and they needed them fast so the first thing she did was set up a schedule. Until everything was ready a few would keep sleeping in the dropship, it was not the best solution but it would have to do for now.
Individual tents would have been ideal but realistically impossible so after taking stock of their resources she decided on sewing sixteen large tents and a small one; each one would house six people and one for Bellamy, her brother would never forgive her if she put him in a communal space and she rather not deal with his grouchiness.
The brunette was working with the other kids on her team, helping them and instructing them how to sew and secure the tents with stakes, as fast as possible, using the one she had already made as an example.
From what she could see, Clarke's speech really did what it was supposed to. All the delinquents were working together, of course, there was the usual banter here and there and sometimes it escalated to a few shoves and one or two punches, but in the grand scheme of things they were all minor inconveniences, easily solved by reminding them of their common goal.
That night everyone was around the fire, eating and enjoying their well-deserved rest after a hard day at work. They were physically exhausted but morale had never been higher, loud cheers and boisterous laughs could be heard all around camp.
Clarke was resting against Murphy's legs, who was regaling her with colourful stories about his day. He still couldn't believe his group had freely elected him as their leader.
"Me blondie, can you believe it?. No one but you has ever chosen me for well, anything" The blonde chuckled at the bewilderment in his voice.
"Helping things run smoothly and leading the hunters, how heroic of you John Murphy"
The boy stuck out his tongue at her in mockery but smiled proudly, heroic indeed. Who would have thought he had it him to be a leader and a decent one at that? Not him, that's for sure.
Not for the first time since arriving on earth Murphy thanked whoever had been responsible for putting Clarke Griffin on his path, he just knew deep in his heart that without her encouragement none of this would have been possible. Hell, they would have probably hanged him by now.
They stayed in comfortable silence, admiring everything the delinquents had already accomplished; Wells team had already filled enough barrels to last them for almost a week, Octavia's group had been able to build five of the seventeen tents she had planned, Jasper had started to produce quite a significant amount of alcohol and Monty was extremely happy about the plants he collected, he even found quite a few trees and bushes with edible fruit and made a crude map so others could start to pick them up tomorrow, Bellamy reported that wood chopping was ahead of schedule and that if all went well they could start building their wall and smokehouse in about two days.
"Tired?" she heard Finn's voice and opened her eyes to look at him.
"Dreadfully so"
He had sat a little too close to her liking but there was nothing the blonde could do about it so she wiggled a little, pretending to stretch, and let out a yawn, hoping he would take the hint and go somewhere else or at the very least stopped talking to her.
Luck was not on her side, it seemed, for Finn kept prattling on about all the ideas Jasper had to make alcohol, he confided in her they were even planning to make some of it drinkable.
When Wells joined the conversation and pointed out that they had been tasked with making disinfectants not spirits and cocktails, Finn defended himself claiming it would be a small amount and that they deserved a reward for all their hard work, didn't they?.
Clarke discreetly smiled at Wells, silently thanking him for distracting Finn; the black boy simply winked at her and curved his lips in a sardonic smile.
Alone with her thoughts one more time, she appallingly realized that in the first timeline she had not helped much with making their camp habitable and secure. It had not been her fault as she had spent most of her time helping Charlotte run away from Murphy but it stilled felt shameful how little she contributed.
This time the blonde redouble her efforts to help; mostly she worked along with Charlotte tending to injuries but she lent a hand wherever she could and in any way she was needed, whether breaking fights, giving advice, or moving logs and water barrels.
When Clarke went to bed that night she saw Charlotte snoozing but valiantly fighting to keep her eyes open. The little blonde was holding Well's hand and singing, it was a bit off-key and a few words didn't make sense, but the sweet gesture warmed Clarke's heart.
"Hey, why are you still up?"
"I was waiting for you and it's my turn so I can't sleep yet" She said, scooting a little to make space for the taller blonde.
"What?"
Charlotte pointed to Wells "every night we take turns singing a few songs, it helps to keep the nightmares at bay"
Clarke was too overwhelmed to talk so she simply wrapped her arms around Charlotte and held her close.
