Chapter 11: Position of Power.
Some answers given. Even if they weren't supposed to know…yet.
-(Wyvern's Dorm; Staff Building, Beacon Academy)-
(Wyvern's POV)
One week has already passed since I first arrived in Beacon.
To be honest, it was a helluva beginning when I first met my first group of friends from here. Minus me getting punched by Yang, killing Roman and his bodyguards in front of them, revealing the existence of zhulongs, AND my unstable capabilities being used against them, I think everything was fine now that they've apologized and I forgave them. Still, if Ozpin himself was comfortable with this proposition, I guess we can let it slide even with Professor Goodwitch's doubts. At the moment, I was just told to continue living my life as a student here with Team RWBY and JNPR along the way. At first it was awkward. But as the days go by, they've gotten better to the point we're pretty comfortable around each other. Even after recent events.
It was Friday once again with the rest of them inside my dorm. While Weiss was making her…disgusting salted-caramel coffee, the rest of her teammates were playing on a gaming console on my TV set with Team JNPR watching the competition go down occasionally. For me, I was mixing in my preferred amount of cream and sugar for my coffee when I brewed my own blend before Weiss'. As soon as I finished prepping my cup, I took a seat at my work desk in the corner near my bed and just continued to watch the others play on the TV.
But I could overhear a conversation between Nora and Jaune about a subject I am familiar with. It was related to music and the artist behind it.
"You have that many of her albums and DVD performances? Wow. Quite the hardcore fan you are, Jaune." Nora giggled.
"But of course!" Jaune said proudly while blasting the music from the one earphone on his left. "Nobody could outmatch that angel's voice and her moves and there's no way anyone can convince me otherwise."
Nora rolled her eyes and was clearly amused, taken aback by his dedication to glorifying this specific artist. "I've never seen her perform or hear her sing, but wow…"
"You want to borrow my collection and watch them in the recommended order?!"
"Uhh…no. It's fine. I'll take a look at it another time."
"What about listening to a song right now?" He immediately handed over his open earphone to her.
"No, Jaune. I'll listen to it later. Really." Nora insisted while chuckling.
Weiss looked over at him curiously, assuming it was about her due to her performances back in Atlas. "Are you both talking about my music again?"
"Oh. Well, no. Not your music or performances." Jaune shook his head. "You ever heard of Sybille Gozen?"
The moment he said that name, Weiss gasped loudly and set down her mug harshly without breaking it. But some of her coffee spilled. "Wait, you listen to her too?"
"A woman of culture, you are~!" He grinned and raised his fist in the air.
"Oh boy…there's two of them now…" Nora smiled dryly.
"Who's Sybille Gozen?" Yang asked while aggressively moving and pressing her fingers on the controller in the middle of a game.
I sipped my coffee and let out a short chuckle. "Sybille Gozen. The most famous singer and dancer from Doraegon, where I'm from." I answered. "Let's just say I'm familiar with her performances and... they were completely breathtaking to experience yourself in her concerts."
Jaune frowned and had his shoulders deflated. "Wish I had the time and money to attend her concerts myself. Mostly the latter, considering how ridiculously expensive they are."
Weiss huffed and folded her arms. "Well, at least YOU have a better chance of attending a concert. Due to my family status and my dad being such a bossy butthead, I can't even go out of fear of getting so much heat from others. Especially in Doraegon."
"It doesn't even have to be a concert. I just want to meet her in person~!"
"Exactly~! Is it too much to ask for?!" Weiss whined and clasped her hands together while looking up, as if she was praying to the Gods.
"Damn. Those two are getting along just fine now after mentioning that girl." Yang chuckled. "So, what does she do?"
"You're not even listening, are you?" I turned over to her with a questioning glare.
"Sorry. In the middle of a game."
I was about to explain who she was again. That was until a sudden knocking on my front door caught our attention. I stood up from my seat before sipping and setting down my mug on the desk.
"I got it." I said and went over to open up the door.
It was the housekeeper of Beacon Academy, Alice Pasha. She was the one who made me the batch of cookies when I arrived in Beacon before mostly getting scarfed by Ruby. For her appearance, she almost looked similar to a maid, but don't let that outfit fool you. It helps her "blend in" with the school grounds as a civilian custodian while she hides a variety of blades for her mace and was crafted with special weaves and materials for fighting. I knew this because I've seen her in combat a few days ago. Overall, she was lethal and is a master at cleaning both domestically and in combat.
"Good afternoon, Wyvern." Alice greeted me and did a curtsey bow with her dress.
"Good afternoon." I bowed my head.
"Eyyyy Ali~!" Yang called out from the couch and waved over at the housekeeper.
Alice let out a chuckle and waved back at her. "Hey, messy missy~!" She called Yang by her supposedly personal nickname, which she didn't seem to mind.
I chuckled as well and rolled my eyes, already knowing where she got that nickname. "Anyway, what's up?" I asked Alice.
She lifted a batch of mail and gave me a bunch. "Just opened your mailbox and wanted to hand these down to you."
"Thank you!" I smiled and took the stack she gave me.
"There's also one from your parents." Alice added as she gave me a rather confused look. "You'd think they would've messaged you by phone if it's something urgent."
She did make a good point. Sending a letter to me didn't seem to make sense as my folks would've relied on instant messaging, phone calls, and even video calls. Usually, them sending me a letter contained money or a check as an allowance. But since I was outside of my homeland, using the Empire's currency in a foreign kingdom wouldn't work. And why send a check when they could've easily sent me funds to my bank electronically? Curiously, I set the rest of my stack of mail on my desk and held my parent's.
"You got a cutter on you, Ms. Pasha?" I asked.
Alice nodded and took out her feather duster, pressing a button to retract the feathers inside the handle and constructed into a large spiked and bladed mace. She took my letter and used one of the sharp blades to effortlessly slice open the top, showing how much she takes care of her weapon.
As soon as she gave it back to me, I took the contents inside which confirmed it was a written letter with my father's handwriting. My eyes scanned each paragraph as I bit my lip nervously the more I reached towards the end.
Curiously, Alice tilted her head at me as she took notice of my facial expression. "What's up? Don't tell me your parents are getting you arranged to be married." She joked.
"No! Of course not!"
"Well, that's a relief." Ruby giggled and nudged her older sister. "Don't worry, Yang. You can rest easy."
Yang nudged back harshly glared at her with her cheeks slightly pink. "What're you talking about?!"
"Well, are you okay though?" Weiss asked while walking over to the group, taking notice on my body language with handling the letter and looking away from them.
"It's nothing bad. It's just…it's starting to make me think about things too much…" I scratched my scalp nervously and averted my eye to look away. "Don't worry so much about me. I'll feel better in a few minutes after I slowly take this in."
"Come on~! You can share your feelings to us girls." Nora smiled sweetly while jokingly pushing Jaune and Ren off. "We don't mind."
"That is the biggest lie girls say towards guys." I deadpanned my response to her. "But no. It's nothing too bad. I just got a letter from my parents."
Ruby leaned over at the couch and raised an eyebrow. "Really? What did they send you?"
"It's not really for me. It's for you guys." I said while passing her the letter.
"For us…?" Ruby quizzically stared down at the letter and began to read it out loud.
To the good friends of our son, Wyvern.
It has come to our attention that you are fully aware of Wyvern's secrets and have involved yourselves with him after getting notified by Professor Goodwitch. We would like to state that although your confrontation has some flaws that are to be criticized, our son has fully forgiven your actions and therefore we are willing to hear all of you out. However, we completely understand all your concerns as no records and the lack of information about Wyvern's transfer may have caused suspicions.
Regarding why we sent you this letter directly, we would like to invite all of you to our estate to personally meet the Hunters-In-Training that have befriended our son. It is a great opportunity to schedule it for the weekend due to our availability. My wife has already prepared everything and the luxuries for your arrival. In addition, you are also free to sleep over in the Kumawaka Family Estate if you prefer.
When all of you reached to an answer, please relay it to Wyvern so we can offer you transportation on our behalf.
Thank you for your time reading this! And please, take good care of our boy and he'll be sure to return the favor.
-Xavior Kumawaka; Father of Wyvern Kumawaka
"Your parents want to meet us…?" Ruby looked up at me in disbelief.
"Well, that's what the letter said, didn't it?" I gave a wry smile while sheepishly looking away. "If you're concerned about them being angry about all of you, don't worry so much. They really are a forgiving bunch."
Alice nodded and gave Ruby a reassuring smile. "Why else would they send you an invitation if they hated you guys?"
"Probably some hidden motives…?"
With that answer, Alice slanted her smile and chortled. "No, no. Believe it or not, I met Wyvern's parents and they have got to be one of the nicest pair of souls out there in Remnant. Of course, it may seem odd coming from a bunch of Zhulongs now that all of you are aware of their existence…. But I assure you that Mr. and Mrs. Kumawaka are easy to speak to and will openly take you in as Wyvern's friends."
"Of course, this is all up to you guys if you're up to visiting my parents…" I told her while biting my lip nervously.
Ruby took notice of the nervousness in my body language and displayed her concern in her face. "Well, if they really are okay with seeing us, then what has gotten you worked up about?"
"It's nothing." I replied, failing to reassure her. "Well, nothing major. But its's just something I haven't prepared myself with…"
Alice chuckled and patted my back gently. "Err…forgive Wyvern. What he means is this is one of the rarest times he gets to introduce one of his friends to his mother and father. Especially from outside of the Empire and without further notice."
"Again, if you're willing to go…"
Yang smiled widely and easily gave her answer without hesitating. "I'm game. It's always good to get out of campus once in a while."
Jaune nodded and sheepishly looked away while scratching his head. "I feel like we should go too, since it seems justified for your parents to talk with us about what happened. Plus, why not? A little bit of an adventure wouldn't hurt." He said while the rest of his team nodded, unanimously in favor of coming along.
"I'll be honest," Blake frowned and twiddled with her hands nervously, "I know it's been a while since I encountered with the Drahënese people, but hopefully it'll go smoothly if they don't recognize me…"
Weiss patted her shoulder with a warm smile. "Don't worry about it. Even if something happens, we got your back."
With that, Alice turned over to me and nodded. "Shall I pack up your things?"
"No need. I'm not much of a slacker like Yang and Nora." I warmly insisted on her offer.
"HEY." Yang and Nora pouted after being called out like that.
"Well, since you guys agreed to come to my home, I'm going to have to call my folks to have preparations ready. This should only take a minute or two." I told them while grabbing the handle of my door to step out.
Alice nodded and went around my room to prepare to clean up the small mess we had made. "Take your time. Let me just tidy this place up before you guys get ready."
With that, I stepped out of my dorm and walked down the completely empty hallway while pulling out my scroll/phone to see I received a message from my dad. He told me that if my friends do plan on going to visit our residence, I would have to contact one of my other friends in Doraegon due to him and mom finishing things up at work. With that, I scrolled down to my contacts list and pressed a name titled "Schnell". I patiently awaited for the phone to pick up, but was surprised that I received an answer in just two tones.
"Hello~?" A cheery female voiced greeted, which was definitely her.
"Hey there, Schnell. Sorry for not calling you for a while." I told her before a short chuckle.
"It's alright. But you do know I get lonely when I don't get to hear your voice everyday…" She teased.
"Really then? That would've been an easy fix if you simply called or texted me about it."
"True. Just didn't want to bother you if you were in the middle of something."
I stopped walking down the hall and looked over at a mirror to fix my hair for later. "So, did my dad let you know that I was going to call you about my friends coming up to my house?"
Schnell giggled. "Yup. I'm so proud of you getting out of your shell for once~!"
"Actually," I chuckled dryly, "it was one of my friends that confronted me. Not the other way around."
"Still. It's good to know you at least have some friends outside of Doraegon now." She said while I heard some chatter in the background between two guys. "Gyo is here too, but he seems busy talking to the pilot."
"Pilot?"
"Yup. The reason why your dad told you to call one of us was because we will be the ones to pick you and your friends up." She told me, "We're currently in Solace City, which is much closer compared to the north where we live. Flight should take around an hour and a half."
Satisfied with fixing my hair, I smiled and continued to walk down the hallway as I saw Ruby and the others leave my dorm. They ran down the opposite side of the hallway to exit and head back to their dorms to get ready. "Perfect. That should be enough time for us to get ready."
"Me and Gyo will be sure to properly introduce ourselves. I'm so excited to finally meet your foreign friends~!" She squealed excitingly.
"Just…one more thing, Schnell. Just try not to make it all stand out…"
"Stand what out?"
"You know what I'm talking about." I bit my lip nervously.
Schnell paused for a few moments and clicked her tongue. "You're still worried about that?"
"Yes!" I answered without hesitating. "You know that's going to be huge news for them to take in, right?"
"There's nothing wrong with being gay, Wyvern~!"
"THAT'S NOT WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!" I shouted over the phone but toned it down because I was still in the hallway of the staff dormitory. "I'm not gay. Whatever made you get that idea?"
"I was just pulling your leg." Schnell laughed. "But in all seriousness, if you're going to keep worrying about that, it's really going to get to you. Especially now that they're going to meet your parents."
"Maybe. But I just need some time to think it over before either me or my parents tell them when we get there."
She giggled as I could tell she was grinning widely. "For a guy like you, Wyvern, you worry too much~."
I rolled my eyes and leaned against the wall. "It's normal for anybody to stress over a situation like this. But remember, just try not to make it all stand out when you get here. Okay?"
"Uhhhh…"
…
"Schnell…?" I called her out, suspiciously.
"…d-don't worry about it! We'll be there in around an hour or half an hour."
"Yeah. I know. It's just what was that pau-"
"Okay~! Looks like we're taking off now~! I'll call you back!"
"You still haven't told me why you paused for a second…"
"Sorry, Wyvern! We're hitting turbulence! We'll see you there once we land! Bye!" She said before hastily hanging up on the line.
-(Front Landing Pads, Beacon Academy)-
It only took around thirty minutes for each of Team RWBY and JNPR to finish packing for them staying over at me and my parent's estate over the weekend. The fact they finished that quickly led me to believe they were either excited to get out of campus and see my home, or Alice easily prepared it all herself. But more likely it's both. Because I saw Nora skipping happily towards the landing pads with everyone else catching up with her and Alice pushing a luggage cart effortlessly even with it being filled. As for me, I was already packed; only requiring a backpack filled with emergency equipment and some school supplies as I did have some spare clothes back at the house.
One thing I noticed about the group was that Jaune and Weiss were actually talking to each other a lot more than usual. Ever since the mentioning of Sybille Gozen, both whom are fans of, they started interacting more which might be a good thing for them. Curiously, I got off the bench I sat on and went over to them.
"Who are you listening to?" I asked Jaune with Weiss, chatting about the music blasting from his scroll. But as soon as I approached closer, I could already hear the voice and lyrics, which I recognized from before. "You two are still talking about Sybille?"
"Duh!" Weiss smiled while dancing her body a bit to the music playing.
Jaune chuckled and nodded shamelessly. "Who else would be listening to after we just found out we love the same artist?"
"Figures." I chuckled. "Just don't try to steal Jaune's attention away from Pyrrha, Weiss."
Pyrrha overheard that and blushed wildly. "What?! W-Why involve me into this?!"
"Relax. He didn't hear you." I winked.
"Hear what?" Jaune asked while lowering the volume, which I was right about him not listening.
"See?" I chuckled at Pyrrha as she seemed relieved.
Then, I felt my scroll vibrate in my pocket, which was most likely a text message from Schnell about updating how far they were from Beacon. Opening the inbox, she noted that they were now in Vale City's airspace and proceeding east about twenty miles away. That's when I kept my eyes on the sky to try and spot their craft. Since it was a clear morning, I could easily see a small spec from the distance as it began to grow bigger on its approach towards Beacon. Knowing it was our ride, I stood up and grabbed my small backpack and looked back at the others who were also eying the approaching aircraft.
I stepped forward towards the landing pad and motioned my hand to let them follow. "You guys ready?"
"All set." Ruby nodded as she followed along as the others did too.
As the aircraft was now at good visual range, I recognized the specifications to confirm it was a modified Bullhead with a paint scheme of blue, red, and silver. Unfortunately, the moment I saw that, my heart dropped as it yawed to its right to show off a fancy insignia of two dragons holding a battle-axe and decorated flower, inside a golden shield. It was the Royal Family Crest of the Drahën Empire. This was something I told Schnell NOT to do in front of everyone.
Letting out an annoyed sigh, I shook my head. "Crap…"
Jaune tilted his head, confused. "What's up?"
The Bullhead finally touched its landing gear on the pad as the side door opened slowly to reveal Schnell and Gyo as if they were already waiting for the door to open. They were already properly dressed in their usual attire. Then I saw the pilot roll down the side cockpit window and gave me a salute.
"Good morning, Master Wyvern." I greeted.
Having no choice, I respectfully greeted back with another salute. "Good morning."
"M-Master…?" Ruby gave me a puzzled expression when hearing my title.
"I-It's a long story but allow me to expl-"
I was interrupted as Schnell and Gyo walked down the assembled steps of the doorway with the most welcomingly eager smiled on their faces for meeting up with everyone else. The others just stared without a word from the look of the Bullhead with the Royal Family crest, the pilot's formality towards me, and the way those two were dressed. Basically, they didn't dress like ordinary people/commoners, or even Huntsman with their style.
"Hello, everybody~!" Schnell jumped and made a curtsey bow with her dress with a quick wink. "My name is Schnell. By the looks of you guys, we're just about the same age. Well, maybe with me being a year older…" She chuckled dryly. "Thank you for taking good care of Wyvern for his first week! It really means a lot to me as his friend since we were little."
"Salutations to all of you." Gyo made a much more calm and formal approach towards everyone else. "You may call my Gyo, and I have also a friend of Wyvern's since childhood. Like what Schnell told you all, I'm grateful for all of you befriending him." He bowed.
"Hold on a second. We've seen you two from the photos that Ozpin showed us a week ago!" Ruby said.
Schnell raised an eyebrow and stared directly into her eyes. "Was I wearing clothes in the photos?"
"Wait…WHAT?!" Ruby blushed.
She laughed and waved her hands to disregard what she just said. "I'm kidding! Don't worry!"
"Schnell. Can you come over here for a second?" I shifted my eyes over to the grinning ice zhulong.
"Yes?" She sidestepped closer to me.
"What did I say about NOT making the welcoming reach at this sort of level?"
Schnell chuckled and rolled her eyes. "We were kind of three-quarters away from our destination and…you know it would be a hassle to fly back north just to change your aircraft."
Stepping into the conversation, Gyo furrowed his brow at me. "Was this supposed to be kept as a secret?"
"Pfft. Like I said, one of these days, your friends were going to find out. So why not get that out of the way?" She shrugged her shoulders.
I growled and facepalmed. "Well, I wasn't ready yet!"
"Ready for what?" Ruby asked as she and the others waited for an explanation.
Schnell smiled and stepped forward in front of me before I would give them answers, as if she was going to tell them herself. "Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to introduce you to the soon-to-be coronated Prince of the Drahën Empire: Weylyn Akua Kumawaka!"
"Why? Why did you have to use my real name?!" I blushed heavily.
"P-Prince?!" Ruby gasped while her mouth remained agape.
"Weylyn~?!" Yang snickered.
"Shut your mouth, Yang." I glared at her as I knew she would be the first one to make comments about my name. As for the others, understandably, each of them was utterly shocked as they weren't expecting me to have that sort of position. My face was still red at the embarrassing reveal as I huffed. "Okay, yes. You heard her. I'm the uncrowned Prince of the Drahën Empire. Save your laughter for when I'm not present."
"Blake?! You didn't know about this?!" Weiss looked over at her feline faunus friend, assuming she knew more about this due to her family status and history.
"I'm just as shocked as all of you!" Blake replied as she was clearly showing she was.
Jaune gulped as he was clearly shivering in fear. "S-So, we basically ganged up against a Prince just a week ago…? We're not going to get executed, are we?!"
"Normally, you would receive that sort of punishment for harassing, assaulting, and falsely accusing the future Prince. But since Wyvern's family seems to have an interest in you guys, they'll spare you." Schnell said bluntly as if execution was possible for all eight of them. Fortunately for them, she was just pulling their leg.
But Jaune seemed to have fallen for it. "Oh my god…" He sighed and barely fainted into Pyrrha's arms.
"What are you so scared about? If anyone would get the worst form of punishment, it would be Yang." Weiss shrugged and pointed her thumb at her.
"I know she's joking. But don't throw me under the bus like that!" Yang pouted.
"Did Wyvern deserve that punch?" Schnell asked, giving Yang a small nudge.
"Yes, but…mostly no…" Yang scratched her head and looked away sheepishly. "Look, I already apologized to him, and we just want to move on from all that."
She let out a giggle and gave her a wink. "Steady progress. I like it."
Yang suspiciously raised an eyebrow at her response. "What do you mean by that…?"
"Nothing." She leaped away from her and looked at the rest of everyone else. "I know this is a lot to take in, but if any of you still need some answers, I'll gladly answer them. Like if you want to know Wyvern's current color for his underwea-…"
"That's not important." I interrupted her. "Listen, I'm sorry for not telling you guys about my position of power sooner. I just didn't know how I was going to tell all of you and see how you would react. Well, judging by the reactions earlier, I expected it to be that way…" I let out a small chuckle. "From this point on, no more secrets. I'll let everyone know more about me because I at least trust you guys."
Ruby stepped forward and gave a smile. "It's okay. Regardless of what your position was, it still doesn't change anything. We're all still friends."
"We're still not in trouble though, right…?" Jaune asked as he was now fully conscious again.
"Don't worry about it!" I assured him with a smile to try and lighten up the mood. "Schnell was just messing with you guys."
"J-Just making sure!" He sighed in relief.
Gyo huffed and leaned against the entrance after putting in the last piece of luggage. "Alrighty! Was that all of everyone's stuff?"
"One more from me." A voice called out from behind us, which made us turn around to see Professor Goodwitch walking down the path towards us.
"Oh, there you are, Ms. Goodwitch!" Gyo bowed and approached her to grab hold of a single luggage she dragged. "Allow me. I'll put this in for you."
"Wait a minute, you're coming too?!" I asked Glynda as she handed over her small personal suitcase to Gyo.
She nodded and turned over to me with a slightly more serious expression than what she had. "As you advisor, it is my job to accompany you at all times."
"But…that's mainly whenever I'm at Beacon! This is my house we're talking about!"
"I'm afraid this is not under my control. This was under Headmaster Ozpin's orders."
"Something tells me you made that up on this spot…" I glared at her suspiciously.
Glynda glared back more sharply and raised an eyebrow. "Are you going to get onboard the ship? Or keep your parents waiting during their only free time?"
Even if her reason wasn't true, she was too persistent to convince. So, I let out a sigh and allowed her to hop onboard the aircraft first. "You may enter…" I told her while she walked up and inside the cabin.
Yang snickered and nudged my side. "Someone has got to keep your diapers changed, after all."
*FLICK!*
"OW~!" Yang rubbed her right cheek, where I lightly flicked my finger at.
"Just get in the aircraft, goldilocks."
-(Heiragon Province; Northern Doraegon, Drahën Empire)-
It was only a three-hour flight from Beacon Academy to reaching the airspace of Heiragon Province. Normally, it would take significantly longer using a commercial aircraft, but our family Bullhead was modified to travel much faster across Remnant if we were on a tight schedule. Overall, the flight was pretty smooth and peaceful with Schnell being the one leading into the conversations between the others about Beacon, Vale, and even me. It was a bit embarrassing talking about my position as an uncrowned Prince a few times when it was brought up. But, overtime, I started to get comfortable with it as Ruby and everyone else started to slowly take it in and accept it even more. The hardest part was trying to ensure that everything was going to be okay even after what happened a week ago. Well, mostly to Jaune as he didn't seem to let it go from Schnell's joke.
Yang looked out the window as there was nothing but clouds outside, obstructing the view if we were above water or land. "How much longer till we land?"
"We're just about below fifteen minutes left in our flight." Schnell answered as she was snacking on some pretzels she found in the overhead cabinet where food and drinks were kept.
"So, Wyvern." Weiss looked over at me, "what should we expect from your home?"
"It's on a tall mesa inside a small harbor with the entire property on top of it. The two main buildings you'll see is a fortress looking palace; our family estate. And the second one is a modestly sized castle folly, which is my personal residence." I answered.
"Wait, you live in your own space? Why?" She asked.
I nodded and gave a small smile. "Yup. Did I ever tell you about Master Ostanes? The one who taught me everything next to my parents? That used to be where he lives and he gave it to me when I was just fifteen."
"Aww. That was nice of him." Pyrrha commented.
"Yeah. He usually gave me the things he knew I was ready for."
"Did he often stay in the palace too then?" Ren asked. "Because it does seem odd that a palace that can house a lot of occupants was something he didn't consider."
"Actually, he did mention that the style of the folly was out of nostalgia from his past. But its design was something I never seen before."
Ren raised an eyebrow. "Maybe nomadic? Something hidden from the outer sectors of the kingdoms? Back then when me and Nora traveled with a friend of ours after my village was attacked, we did come across some bizarre settlements."
"Maybe. Ostanes never really talked about his past…"
"We'll check it out ourselves when we get there." Nora said. "Or…Ren will, specifically since he's more of an expert on that."
Before I could reply, I felt the aircraft start to move downwards as every one of us felt the small dive from our stomachs. As we were beginning our descent further, the pilot informed us to buckle our seatbelts while our altitude began to decrease even more. However, something started to feel off as turbulence was starting to become a bit more shaky than usual. But that was when we all felt a sudden harsh gust of wind push the aircraft left and bank slightly. Cautiously, Gyo took out one of his repeating crossbows/tomahawks while heading up to the cockpit. Schnell unbuckled her seatbelt too and headed to the cockpit with Gyo.
"What's going on up there?" I asked as I was already standing while Ruby and the others were still seated.
The pilot looked back at me with a concerned expression. "Something is trying to blow us off course."
"Something?"
"This doesn't feel natural." He nodded. "It's like-"
"NEVERMORE!"
Upon hearing Gyo's shouting, an evolved Nevermore appeared in front of the aircraft and let out its ear rupturing screech before flapping and swiping one of its wings harshly at the aircraft. This resulted the aircraft to bank harshly to its left and divert us off course towards our landing path. The display panels in the cockpit were all lighting up red with alarms as it received considerable damage from that swipe alone.
"Oh shit! Engines aren't responding!" The pilot noted.
Jaune gasped as he held onto his seat tightly. "This is why I hate flying!"
"Stabilize the aircraft! Make the landing as smooth as possible!" I told the pilot while he did exactly what I said. "Gyo, keep an eye out for that Nevermore! If its flying towards us, shoot it outside the window!"
"Acknowledged!"
While the pilot focused on stabilizing the aircraft and Schnell went back to check on the others in the cabin, I went for the radio and called into an open frequency due to the emergency we were in. "Mayday! Mayday! This is Wyvern Akua Kumawaka onboard The Monarch! Our aircraft has taken damage and is descending down towards the Sage Forest, near the Royal Estate! I repeat, we are going down at approximately twenty miles south of waypoi-"
That was when the radio was cut out as soon as the damage was now affecting the electronics. I could only pray that the message was at least given out to any nearby elements coming to rescue us. Mainly the Drahënese Military as they are at times constantly on patrol near the palace. As for how they didn't spot this Nevermore, there can be a few reasons why. But thinking of it wasn't important right now. We exited the clouds and we were heading towards the ground fast. But the pilot quickly reacted to this and pulled the stick to stabilize and soften the upcoming crash landing.
"BRACE!"
The Bullhead then slammed against the top of the trees and soon hit the ground as all of us clearly felt the impact, but only came out with it being minorly painful. Thankfully, this aircraft was also capable of minimizing injuries as much as possible due to its design and frame both external and internal. As soon as the aircraft was no longer moving, it was safe to stand up as I looked up at everyone else, who were all thankfully still in their seats due to the seatbelts.
Schnell groaned and went through each aisle to check up on each of them for any injury. "You guys okay?"
"We're good…" Ruby said while stretching after getting off her seat. Her team nodded from her statement as they appeared to be unharmed.
"Yeah…" Jaune panted, "That was intense…"
Pyrrha chuckled a bit to lighten the mood. "It wasn't that bad. Could've been worse."
"No sudden moves though. Make sure none of you have any broken bones…" Glynda said while slowly unbuckling.
"Thank God all of you guys are okay." I sighed in relief after they confirmed their status was green. "Captain? Gyo? Status."
Gyo answered back for him and the pilot, "We're good. Little whiplash, but not too major."
"Sheesh. I thought this Bullhead could at least handle a Nevermore like that." The pilot sighed while examining the damage.
Gyo shrugged and scratched his head while examining it too. "Well, some of the specs are pretty outdated, which was my fault, and I will take full responsibility over." He chuckled sheepishly. "Plus, the odds of encountering a Class-5 Nevermore is pretty slim compared to the other Class-5s. So, it seems we hit a pretty thin odd."
"Not to mention that the route we take is usually one of the safest airspaces due to our patrols." Schnell added, growing a bit suspicious about all this. "The only time we fly without an escort squadron, and we had to encounter and crash because of a Grimm…"
"Yeah. All this feels more unlucky than anything…" The pilot said while finished examining the status of the aircraft. "Crap. Stabilizers and engines aren't responding. That thing really ruined this aircraft badly…"
He nodded and opened the side door for everyone to get out. "I'll make sure the next "Monarch" Bullhead is up to date with our latest technology and specifications. Especially with the possible encounters with a Class-5 Nevermore in mind."
Weiss sighed as she was the first in the group to hope out after Gyo. "So, what are we going to do now? Walk?" She formed a rather annoyed expression from the thought.
"I doubt it. Someone surely would've got that distress signal Wyvern called out in an open radio." Schnell said while helping the others out.
"Captain, send out another distress signal if you can. And stay inside. We don't know what else is out here." I told the pilot as he acknowledged and stayed in the cockpit.
"I'll remain outside to keep an eye out." Glynda declared while taking out her crop.
"Ms. Goodwitch, leave that to the two of us." Gyo insisted on the idea while he and Schnell were already on security. "We know these lands from top to bottom ever since we were children. How about assisting the captain with working on sending out another distress call just in case Wyvern's didn't get through?"
"Are you sure about this?"
"We're confident. Especially with Wyvern here too." Schnell nodded in agreement.
Glynda reluctantly nodded and turned her back to head inside the crashed Bullhead again. "If you need assistance, just call me outside."
Then, the air suddenly started to grow heavy just immediately after I gave that order. All of the birds and wildlife around us turned dead silent as the wind almost seemed like it stopped blowing temporarily. This was a red flag as everyone, including me, scanned the entire forest trees around us with our hands touching our weapons. I stepped towards Gyo and Schnell in our own defensive formation and stance while our senses were now alarming us of a dangerous presence. Schnell closed her eyes and sniffed the air deeply, which then made me and Gyo do the same thing to verify if we could sense anything. And we did, now tightly gripping our weapons.
"Gyo. Wyvern. Smell that?" Schnell smirked as she unsheathed her katana.
"Yeah. Grimm." I nodded, doing the same with one of my Dragon Tails swords.
Gyo shrugged his shoulders and loaded up a new clip of bolts. "Uncivilized beasts. Thinking it's okay to ruin a day such as this." He growled.
Nora tilted her head and curiously asked, "You can smell the Grimm from afar? How far are they?"
Her question was answered when one Ursa leaped out of the bushes in an attempt to surprise attack on Gyo, who immediately fired a hailstorm of bolts at its paws and head. Then, the bolts all exploded at the same time, leaving only pieces of its boney remains and burned dust.
"Holy cow~!" Ruby watched in awe from Gyo's precision, speed, and not reacting to such a close call.
Considering most Ursas travel in a pack of two, the other one jumped out afterwards, enraged with the loss of its other. Before I could finish the job, Schnell side stepped in front of me and deflected its claw attack before slicing one limb off and slicing its body cleanly in half to show just how sharp her two-handed katana was.
"That was my kill." I playfully pouted at her.
"I'm sorry, your highness. But I was just doing my job~!" Schnell chortled.
"Well, I didn't go through my coronation yet, so you just wasted some energy." I shrugged while remaining on defensive stance. Suddenly, my senses detected something else nearby. "Hold on. Someone else is here."
"Friendly?" Gyo asked, but then sensed it too. "Oh…"
Schnell smirked and lowered her sword a little once she detected it afterwards. "Zhulongs."
Ruby looked around cautiously after hearing us confirm another presence. "Zhulongs? How many?"
"Two." I answered while looking at the direction of where I sensed it, puzzled. "But why-…"
*SLAM!*
That was when the trees in front of us suddenly fell forward as a Goliath was practically thrown out in the exposed tree line, beaten and in a brutalized state. It let out an exhausted and pained whine as it tried to drag itself away from something behind it.
But it was stopped where it laid when a figure jumped over the top of the trees. It was a woman with a gauntlet that hade a huge blade attached to it. She had fair skin, was above six foot tall, long red hair with zhulong horns sticking out like her wings in the back, and garnet red eyes that I could tell due to them glowing. For what she was wearing, it was armored boots reaching up to her knees with straps on her upper legs that kept her pieces together. Her top being a cherry red medium dress, armored pauldrons on both shoulders, elbow gloves with some paddings while her right arm had the gauntlet with the blade, and she had a scarf wrapped around her neck with the same royal crest badge clipped on it.
"No, you don't, beast!" She said before swiping her bladed gauntlet at the Goliath, with the blade itself detaching and stabbing near the base of its snout. This was enough to pin it as it trumpets in pain.
It turns out, she didn't finish the job as she wasn't alone. A muscular and much more taller man jumped out from behind the poor Grimm. He wore a full set of armor minus the helmet was curved and intimidating in design while also beautifully gilded. The only addition that looked off was the White Fang mask that was used as an improvised shoulder guard. Almost like a war trophy. Instead of a scarf like the woman, he had a cowl that also held the royal crest badge on it. For what I can see from his face more closely, he was also fair in skin tone while having dark blue hair styled to a low fade with a brush top, turquoise eyes that were also glowing, and a goatee with mild sideburns. He suddenly formed out zhulong horns and wings before lifting out an assembling battleaxe that was twice his body size. Using his wings to force himself down towards the Goliath, he lifted the axe and absolutely decimated its head to the point where fragments of its bone plated head flew out. But none of them hit us.
As for who these two were, I immediately recognize them with Schnell and Gyo while Ruby and the others remained cautious and perplexed.
"Size can sometimes be a disadvantage." The man shook his head and stood on top of its upper back, behind the destroyed head, wiping some blood off him.
The woman landed next to him smoothly and chortled. "Always coming down to take MY prey, don't you?"
"Did you want to get Grimm blood on you?"
"Maybe I did~!"
The man and woman turned their heads at all of us and gave the most welcoming smile, even while on top of a dead Goliath.
"Greetings." The man bowed his head. "Looks like we arrived in time."
"Thanks for the help, I guess." Yang whistled at the state of the Goliath.
Jaune remained cautious as he still raised his sword and shield up. "Who are you two?"
"Mom. Dad. What are you two doing all the way out here?" I asked.
"What?!" Ruby and the group said at the same time.
I remember writing the old version of this chapter. Yeah. I'd rather not mention more about my high school days of writing…
