On the afternoon of Monday, September 7th, 1992, the second years of Skyward School of Practical Sorcery had their first Care of Magical Creatures lesson of the school year after lunch.
This class was a little later getting started then the rest because Heather had decided to give all students of Skyward School of Practical Sorcery free periods during Care of Magical Creatures time slots the previous week owing to wanting to give newly formed friend groups the opportunity to spend some time together during their first week.
Heather hadn't done this for Harry, Amy, Susan, and Hannah, although the Yellow Quartet had certainly taken advantage of it. Heather's thoughts were for friends who had met on the first day of school and become quick friends and she wanted to encourage those friendships and allow them to flourish. This wasn't about the clubs either. This was about the informal friendships that yearmates at schools formed with each other.
Now, however, it was time for the second years to get down to the business of learning about magical creatures.
Hagrid had applied for the post of Care of Magical Creatures teacher at Skyward School of Practical Sorcery, but Heather had declined to hire him.
When Hagrid had applied for the position, Heather had deeply mixed feelings on the prospect of hiring Hagrid.
On one hand, she was grateful that Hagrid had allowed her to borrow creatures from him to teach the Yellow Quartet Care of Magical Creatures when she was home schooling them, including having lent her his personal niffler collection.
On the other hand, Heather had a hard time trusting Hagrid because she knew he had been close with Dumbledore and McGonagall.
Ultimately, Heather had given Hagrid a job interview and had not come away liking what she had heard.
By Heather's judgement, Hagrid seemed too obsessed with large, monstrous, and dangerous creatures and not interested enough in beautiful, gentle, magical animals that witches and wizards kept as pets or interacted with in their day to day lives. She also did not feel like Hagrid understood the concept of age appropriate lessons.
Heather had also declined to carry Professor Kettleburn over from Hogwarts. While accidents could happen, Heather viewed Professor Kettleburn's large number of burns, bites, and missing limbs as proof that he was either not as competent in dealing with magical creatures as a Care of Magical Creatures teacher should be or else extremely and consistently reckless. Besides, Heather wanted a younger and spryer teacher for this post.
Heather had ended up hiring a tall and muscular young man with golden brown hair and green eyes named Zion Zoo to be her Care of Magical Creatures Teacher.
On this day, the second years met Professor Zoo outside on one of the lawns for their lesson.
"Good afternoon, " said Professor Zoo formally when all the second years had arrived.
Looking around at the class, Professor Zoo said seriously, "One of the most important aspects of magical creatures is being able to distinguish magical creatures from very similar muggle animals."
Next nanosecond, they heard a low barking sound.
A dog that looked very much like a Jack Russell Terrier came trotting towards them.
"So?" quizzed Professor Zoo, "Can any of you tell me what kind of dog this is?"
"Jack Russell Terrier, " chroused the class.
"Look more closely, " replied Professor Zoo.
It was Amy who was the first to spot what this dog really was.
"It has a forked tail, " cooed Amy, pointing at said tail, "This dog is a Crup."
"Very good, Miss Alworth, " said Professor Zoo approvingly, "The forked tail is what distinguishes Crups from Jack Russell Terriers from a physical appearance perspective. Now, can any of you tell me why Crups require licenses for ownership?"
"A witch or wizard wishing to own a Crup must be able to control the Crup in muggle inhabited areas," piped up Hermione Granger, "Crups are ferocious towards muggles."
"Yet are very loyal to wizards, " added Parvati Patil, "Crups as loyal to their witch and wizard owners as hippogriffs or phoenixes."
"It says in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them that Crups are almost certainly a wizard created dog, " piped up Harry.
"Gran always told me that Crups were likely created by pure blood supremacists," said Neville Longbottom seriously, "That's really the only way you can interpret an animal that is vicious towards muggles but loyal and devoted to witches and wizards."
"Correct, " confirmed Professor Zoo, "Some pro muggle witches and wizards refuse to consider Crups for pets. However, the majority opinion in the Wizarding World is that Crups makes fantastic pets for witches and wizards. It just comes down to being a responsible dog owner."
"Can we pet him?" asked Amy hopefully.
"Oh yes, " said Professor Zoo matter of factly, "Crups love being petted by witches and wizards."
Amy went up and petted the Crup and soon the whole class was taking turns doing so, however, there was an interruption when Heather's voice came over them all
"WOULD AMY ALWORTH PLEASE REPORT TO MY OFFICE? YOU'RE NOT IN TROUBLE BUT COULD YOU PLEASE COME TO MY OPFFICE NOW?"
