While most of Skyward School of Practical Sorcery was asleep, Harry remained awake in his room attempting to repair the torn picture of Luna sitting on her mother's lap that had been the last picture Luna had ever taken with her mom before her mom's tragic death when Luna had been nine.
Harry dumped the pieces of the torn picture onto his bed and retrieved his wand from his right hand pocket with his right hand.
The pieces of the torn picture now sitting on Harry's bed were like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Harry pointed his wand directly at the pieces of the torn picture on the bed and cried "Reparo!"
Something very interesting happened as Harry attempted this spell: The picture mended itself into a whole picture, but with many of the pieces in the wrong place. The picture was now essentially scrambled.
Harry thought about tearing the picture back up and trying the Mending Charm again. However, after a minute and a nanosecond of thought, Harry realized that this would only result in another scrambled picture.
Harry realized that the only way to restore the picture to its original state was to solve the jigsaw puzzle.
Rather than just tear up the picture again and try the Mending Charm again, Harry knew he had to study the picture and tear it up selectively so that the pieces could fit together in the proper spots. Harry formed a plan.
He tore up the picture again and set himself to finding all of the pieces of the picture that made up Luna's face. He would then find all the pieces of the picture that made up Luna's arms, then Luna's legs, etc. and do the same for her mother.
It took hours of guessing, testing, and revising, but Harry finally had placed all the pieces together on his bed in the way they needed to be to restore the picture to its original state.
Harry pointed his wand at this setup and exclaimed, "Reparo!" and sure enough the picture was restored to its original state, good as new.
Harry noted that Luna was wearing a very unique dress in this picture, a dress that gave off the appearance of being a silver Christmas tree. Luna 's mom was wearing a dazzling glittering dress of sparkling blue, a shade of blue that reminded Harry of the blue unforms Lawrence Taylor and the New York Giants wore. Both Luna and her mom were free of jewelry and accessories in this picture.
The next morning at breakfast, a very tired looking Harry returned the picture to its rightful owner, Luna, and explained how he was finally able to repair it.
"Oh, Harry," said Luna in an overwhelmed voice, "I-I. Well, words can't express how much I truly appreciate the time and effort you put into repairing this picture for me. While there is no worse tragedy than a child losing a parent, and while mom's death is a pain and a sadness that I will carry with me for life, you have saved me from a significant additional emotional burden by repairing and thus saving this picture for me. For me, this picture is like a remaining small slice of my mom and my relationship with her. The fact that this picture was taken so soon before mom's death only adds to its emotional significance for me."
"That is why I put all that time and effort into repairing that picture. I did it to save you from the extreme heartbreak losing this picture would mean for you."
"I could never have repaired it myself, " admitted Luna, "Just being in the presence of the torn pieces would be too emotional for me to be able to have the concentration necessary to do the task of repairing he picture."
"That's totally understandable. That emotion is why I knew how important it was for you to get this picture back in its original state. In a way, losing this picture would feel like losing your mom all over again."
Luna looked Harry eye to eye. This was exactly how Luna felt about this picture. Luna could tell that Harry understood.
Luna now gave Harry a big sincere hug and said, "Thank you, Harry. You, Amy, Susan, and Hannah have been decent yo me from the nanosecond this school opened.
"I'm going to rejoin Amy, Susan, and Hannah now," Harry told Luna, "If you ever need my help or assistance on anything feel free to ask me. "
"Thank you, Harry," smiled Luna as Harry walked back to the Yellow Quartet's table.
Amy, Susan, and Hannah all gave Harry pats on the back as he sat down and beamed at him.
They couldn't be prouder of Harry and what he had done to help Luna.
