Belvina Burke née Black (1886 – 1962)

"I will care for you, Miss Black," said Herbert, taking Belvina's hands in his own. "You will live a comfortable life as my wife. If nothing else, I promise you that."

Belvina looked down at their intertwined hands, smiling. She'd always been nervous about marriage. She'd known, of course, that it would happen. That it was her duty to her family. But she'd always hoped—always dreamt—that her marriage, unlike those of her brothers', would be one filled with love.

And in this moment, as Herbert Burke declared himself as a good man, Belvina got the feeling things were actually working out. The thought made her flush.

"I'll get a job at the Ministry," continued Herbert. "Something respectable."

"What about your father's shop?"

Herbert shook his head. "My father's shop is full of trinkets, nothing more. And you deserve more than the life of a shopkeeper's wife."

"I thought you loved your father's shop."

"I appreciate my father's hard work. He has provided well for the family. Ensured that my sisters have good prospects and that my mother has no worries."

Belvina's head cocked to the side, her chestnut curls swaying with the movement. "I do no question your father's work ethic, Mr Burke. I was simply under the impression that you would be taking over the shop."

"And that didn't deter you from the prospect of marrying me?"

"No." Her cheeks felt hot. "I think Borgin and Burkes is an impressive enterprise. I visited once with my brothers. I found the selection of goods quite charming."

"You did."

"I did."

"You thought I was going to take over my father's shop and you still wanted to marry me."

"I did."

"Well, then." Herbert blinked. "If you like the shop, you will have the shop. I will speak to my father immediately."

A smile tugged at the corner of Belvina's lips. He was so pliable. So willing to change his mind in deference to her. And her hands felt comfortable in his. She would be happy in marriage. She was sure of that.
